It is proved that free dynamic algebras superamalgamate. Craig interpolation for propositional dynamic logic and superamalgamation for the variety of dynamic algebras follow.

Given a class ${\cal C}$ of subgroups of a topological group G, we say that a subgroup $H \in {\cal C}$ is a universal${\cal C}$subgroup of G if every subgroup $K \in {\cal C}$ is a continuous homomorphic preimage of H. Such subgroups may be regarded as complete members of ${\cal C}$ with respect to a natural preorder on the set of subgroups of G. We show that for any locally compact Polish group G, the countable power Gω has a universal Kσ subgroup and a universal compactly generated subgroup. We prove a weaker version of this in the nonlocally compact case and provide an example showing that this result cannot readily be improved. Additionally, we show that many standard Banach spaces (viewed as additive topological groups) have universal Kσ and compactly generated subgroups. As an aside, we explore the relationship between the classes of Kσ and compactly generated subgroups and give conditions under which the two coincide.

In [H1] Hrushovski introduced a number of ideas concerning the relations between types which have proved to be of importance in stability theory. These relations allow the geometries associated to various types to be connected. In this paper we consider the meaning of these concepts in modules (and more generally in abelian structures). In particular, we provide algebraic characterisations of notions such as hereditary orthogonality, “p -internal” and “p-simple”. These characterisations are in the same spirit as the algebraic characterisations of such concepts as orthogonality and regularity, that have already proved so useful. Of the concepts that we consider, p-simplicity is dealt with in [H3] and the other three concepts in [H2].

The descriptions arose out of our desire to develop some intuition for these ideas. We think that our characterisations may well be useful in the same way to others, particularly since our examples are algebraically uncomplicated and so understanding them does not require expertise in the model theory of modules. Furthermore, in view of the increasing importance of these notions, the results themselves are likely to be directly useful in the model-theoretic study of modules and, via abelian structures, in more general stability-theoretic contexts. Finally, some of our characterisations suggest that these ideas may be relevant to the algebraic problem of understanding the structure of indecomposable injective modules.

We describe the Ziegler spectrum of a Bézout domain B=D+XQ[X] where D is a principal ideal domain and Q is its field of fractions; in particular we compute the Cantor–Bendixson rank of this space. Using this, we prove the decidability of the theory of B-modules when D is “sufficiently” recursive.

For each Turing machine ${\cal T}$, we construct an algebra $\mathbb{A}$′$\left( {\cal T} \right)$ such that the variety generated by $\mathbb{A}$′$\left( {\cal T} \right)$ has definable principal subcongruences if and only if ${\cal T}$ halts, thus proving that the property of having definable principal subcongruences is undecidable for a finite algebra. A consequence of this is that there is no algorithm that takes as input a finite algebra and decides whether that algebra is finitely based.

We investigate the isomorphism types of combinatorial geometries arising from Hrushovski's flat strongly minimal structures and answer some questions from Hrushovski's original paper.

In light of a gap found by Krupiński, we give a new proof of associativity for the Morley (or “nonforking”) product of invariant measures in NIP theories.

1. Conjecture. Si K est un corps de courbe sur un corps algébriquement clos k, il existe un sous-ensemble fini A de k tel que tout corps de courbe sur kélémentairement équivalent à K dans le langage ℒ (A), lui est k-isomorphe.

2. Conjecture. Deux corps de courbe sur un corps algébriquement clos K élémentairement équivalents dans le langage ℒ sont isomorphes.

Nous démontrerons ces conjectures lorsque le genre est différent de 1, et si le genre est 1, lorsque la caractéristique est nulle et le corps de courbe sans multiplication complexe.

The set theory ΚΡΠN+1 for ΠN+1-reflecting universes is shown to be ΠN+1-conservative over iterations of ΠN-recursively Mahlo operations for each N ≥ 2.

Our results concern the natural models of Ackermann-type set theories, but they can also be viewed as results about the definability of ordinals in certain sets.

Ackermann's set theory A was introduced in [1] and it is now formulated in the first order predicate calculus with identity, using ∈ for membership and an individual constant V for the class of all sets. We use the letters ϕ, χ, θ, and χ to stand for formulae which do not contain V and capital Greek letters to stand for any formulae. Then, the axioms of A* are the universal closures of

where all the free variables are shown in A4 and z does not occur in the Θ of A2. A is the theory A* − A5.

Most of our notation is standard (for instance, α, β, γ, δ, κ, λ, ξ are variables ranging over ordinals) and, in general, we follow the notation of [7]. When x ⊆ Rα, we use Df(Rα, x) for the set of those elements of Rα which are definable in 〈Rα, ∈〉, using a first order ∈-formula and parameters from x.

We refer the reader to [7] for an outline of the results which are known about A, but we shall summarise those facts which are frequently used in this paper.

The K-trivial sets form an ideal in the Turing degrees, which is generated by its computably enumerable (c.e.) members and has an exact pair below the degree of the halting problem. The question of whether it has an exact pair in the c.e. degrees was first raised in [22, Question 4.2] and later in [25, Problem 5.5.8].

We give a negative answer to this question. In fact, we show the following stronger statement in the c.e. degrees. There exists a K-trivial degree d such that for all degrees a, b which are not K-trivial and a > d, b > d there exists a degree v which is not K-trivial and a > v, b > v. This work sheds light to the question of the definability of the K-trivial degrees in the c.e. degrees.

In 1513 the Spanish adventurer Balboa discovered an ocean three times bigger than any other ocean in the world. When he returned to Europe at the end of the year and told the Spaniards, they probably did not fully believe him. Like Balboa, the symbolic logicians have recently discovered a new vast ocean of thought, and like the Europeans of his day, many people are hardly aware of the discovery or its full implications.

The newly discovered ocean, symbolic logic, is, in its broadest sense, a new science which studies through use of efficient symbols the nature and properties of all nonnumerical relations, seeking precise meanings and necessary conclusions. As an applied science, it holds immense promise. For example, it may give us an unambiguous language for political, economic, and social fields, which will conveniently reflect the structure of these fields and make discussion and analysis easy.

Propositional modal logic over relational frames is naturally extended with propositional quantifiers by letting them range over arbitrary sets of worlds of the relevant frame. This is also known as second-order propositional modal logic. The propositionally quantified modal logic of a class of relational frames is often not axiomatizable, although there are known exceptions, most notably the case of frames validating the strong modal logic $\mathrm {S5}$. Here, we develop new general methods with which many of the open questions in this area can be answered. We illustrate the usefulness of these methods by applying them to a range of examples, which provide a detailed picture of which normal modal logics define classes of relational frames whose propositionally quantified modal logic is axiomatizable. We also apply these methods to establish new results in the multimodal case.

We obtain, for the first time, a modular many-valued semantics for combined logics, which is built directly from many-valued semantics for the logics being combined, by means of suitable universal operations over partial non-deterministic logical matrices. Our constructions preserve finite-valuedness in the context of multiple-conclusion logics, whereas, unsurprisingly, it may be lost in the context of single-conclusion logics. Besides illustrating our constructions over a wide range of examples, we also develop concrete applications of our semantic characterizations, namely regarding the semantics of strengthening a given many-valued logic with additional axioms, the study of conditions under which a given logic may be seen as a combination of simpler syntactically defined fragments whose calculi can be obtained independently and put together to form a calculus for the whole logic, and also general conditions for decidability to be preserved by the combination mechanism.

We prove some results about the model theory of fields with a derivation of the Frobenius map, especially that the model companion of this theory is axiomatizable by axioms used by Wood in the case of the theory $\operatorname {DCF}_p$ and that it eliminates quantifiers after adding the inverse of the Frobenius map to the language. This strengthens the results from [4]. As a by-product, we get a new geometric axiomatization of this model companion. Along the way we also prove a quantifier elimination result, which holds in a much more general context and we suggest a way of giving “one-dimensional” axiomatizations for model companions of some theories of fields with operators.

In this paper, we introduce a logic based on team semantics, called $\mathbf {FOT} $ , whose expressive power is elementary, i.e., coincides with first-order logic both on the level of sentences and (possibly open) formulas, and we also show that a sublogic of $\mathbf {FOT} $ , called $\mathbf {FOT}^{\downarrow } $ , captures exactly downward closed elementary (or first-order) team properties. We axiomatize completely the logic $\mathbf {FOT} $ , and also extend the known partial axiomatization of dependence logic to dependence logic enriched with the logical constants in $\mathbf {FOT}^{\downarrow } $ .
