This paper explores the feasibility of a break-even-class mirror referred to as BEAM (break-even axisymmetric mirror): a neutral-beam-heated simple mirror capable of thermonuclear-grade parameters and $Q\sim 1$ conditions. Compared with earlier mirror experiments in the 1980s, BEAM would have: higher-energy neutral beams, a larger and denser plasma at higher magnetic field, both an edge and a core and capabilities to address both magnetohydrodynamic and kinetic stability of the simple mirror in higher-temperature plasmas. Axisymmetry and high-field magnets make this possible at a modest scale enabling a short development time and lower capital cost. Such a $Q\sim 1$ configuration will be useful as a fusion technology development platform, in which tritium handling, materials and blankets can be tested in a real fusion environment, and as a base for development of higher-$Q$ mirrors.

Electron-cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) is the main heating mechanism in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. Although second-harmonic ECRH (X2) has been used routinely for plasma startup, startup at third harmonic (X3) is known to be much more difficult. In this work, we investigate the energy gain of particles during nonlinear wave–particle interaction for conditions relevant to second- and third-harmonic startups in W7-X. We take into account both the beam and the ambient magnetic field inhomogeneities. The latter is shown to significantly increase the mean energy gain resulting from a single wave–particle resonant interaction. In W7-X-like conditions, the improvement in maximum gained energy is up to 4 times the analogous uniform magnetic field case. However, this improvement is not enough to ensure X3 startup. The optimal magnetic field inhomogeneity length scale for average energy gain and start up in W7-X-like conditions is found to be in the range of $1$ to $3\ {\rm km}^{-1}$. A possibility of using multiple beams with neighbouring resonances is also considered. A considerable enhancement of the energy gain is demonstrated.

Observations, mainly of outbursts in dwarf novae, imply that the anomalous viscosity in highly ionized accretion discs is magnetic in origin and requires that the plasma ${\beta \sim 1}$. Until now, most simulations of the magnetic dynamo in accretion discs have used a local approximation (known as the shearing box). While these simulations demonstrate the possibility of a self-sustaining dynamo, the magnetic activity generated in these models saturates at $\beta \gg 1$. This long-standing discrepancy has previously been attributed to the local approximation itself. There have been recent attempts at simulating magnetic activity in global accretion discs with parameters relevant to the dwarf novae. These too find values of $\beta \gg 1$. We speculate that the tension between these models and the observations may be caused by numerical magnetic diffusivity. As a pedagogical example, we present exact time-dependent solutions for the evolution of weak magnetic fields in an incompressible fluid subject to linear shear and magnetic diffusivity. We find that the maximum factor by which the initial magnetic energy can be increased depends on the magnetic Reynolds number as ${\mathcal {R}}_{m}^{2/3}$. We estimate that current global numerical simulations of dwarf nova discs have numerical magnetic Reynolds numbers around six orders of magnitude less than the physical value found in dwarf nova discs of ${\mathcal {R}}_{m} \sim 10^{10}$. We suggest that, given the current limitations on computing power, expecting to be able to compute realistic dynamo action in observable accretion discs using numerical MHD is, for the time being, a step too far.

The Hamiltonian dynamics of a single particle in a rotating plasma column, interacting with an magnetic multipole is perturbatively solved for up to second order, using the method of Lie transformations. First, the exact Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of canonical action-angle variables, and then an approximate integrable Hamiltonian is introduced, using another set of actions and angles, which describe the centre of oscillation for the particle. The perturbation introduces an effective ponderomotive potential, which to leading order is positive. At the second order, the pseudopotential consists of a sum of terms of the Miller form, and can have either sign. Additionally, at second order, the ponderomotive interaction introduces a modification to the particle effective mass, when considering the motion along the column axis. It is found that particles can be axially confined by the ponderomotive potentials, but acquire radial excursions which scale as the confining potential. The radial excursions of the particle along its trajectory are investigated, and a condition for the minimal rotation frequency for which the particle remains radially confined is derived. Last, we comment on the changes to the aforementioned solution to the pseudopotentials and particle trajectory in the case of resonant motion, that is, a motion which has the same periodicity as the perturbation.

The ability to quickly refresh gas-jet targets without cycling the vacuum chamber makes them a promising candidate for laser-accelerated ion experiments at high repetition rate. Here we present results from the first high repetition rate ion acceleration experiment on the VEGA-3 PW-class laser at CLPU. A near-critical density gas-jet target was produced by forcing a 1000 bar H$_2$ and He gas mix through bespoke supersonic shock nozzles. Proton energies up to 2 MeV were measured in the laser forward direction and 2.2 MeV transversally. He$^{2+}$ ions up to 5.8 MeV were also measured in the transverse direction. To help maintain a consistent gas density profile over many shots, nozzles were designed to produce a high-density shock at distances larger than 1 mm from the nozzle exit. We outline a procedure for optimizing the laser–gas interaction by translating the nozzle along the laser axis and using different nozzle materials. Several tens of laser interactions were performed with the same nozzle which demonstrates the potential usefulness of gas-jet targets as high repetition rate particle source.

Angular momentum coupling between a rotating magnetized plasma and torsional Alfvén waves carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) is examined. It is demonstrated not only that rotation is the source of Fresnel–Faraday rotation – or orbital Faraday rotation effects – for OAM-carrying Alfvén waves, but also that angular momentum from an OAM-carrying Alfvén wave can be transferred to a rotating plasma through the inverse process. For the direct process, the transverse structure angular rotation frequency is derived by considering the dispersion relation for modes with opposite OAM content. For the inverse process, the torque exerted on the plasma is derived as a function of wave and plasma parameters.

We present a convergence study of the gyromoment (GM) approach, which is based on projecting the gyrokinetic distribution function onto a Hermite–Laguerre polynomial basis, focused on the cyclone base case (CBC) (Lin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 83, no. 18, 1999, pp. 3645–3648) and Dimits shift (Dimits et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 7, no. 3, 2000, pp. 969–983) as benchmarks. We report that the GM approach converges more rapidly in capturing the nonlinear dynamics of the CBC than the continuum GENE code (Jenko et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 7, no. 5, 2000, pp. 1904–1910) when comparing the number of points representing the velocity space. Increasing the velocity dissipation improves the convergence properties of the GM approach, albeit yielding a slightly larger saturated heat flux. By varying the temperature equilibrium gradient, we show that the GM approach successfully reproduces the Dimits shift (Dimits et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 7, no. 3, 2000, pp. 969–983) and effectively captures its width, which is in contrast to the gyrofluid framework. In the collisional regime, the convergence properties of the GM approach improve and a good agreement with previous global particle-in-cell results on transport is obtained (Lin et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 83, no. 18, 1999, pp. 3645–3648). Finally, we report that the choice of collision model has a minimal impact both on the ion temperature gradient growth rate and on the nonlinear saturated heat flux, at tokamak-relevant collisionality.

The properties of the edge ion-scale turbulence are studied using the beam emission spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic on MAST. Evidence of the formation of large-scale high-amplitude coherent structures, filamentary density blobs and holes, 2–4 cm inside the plasma separatrix is presented. Measurements of radial velocity and skewness of the density fluctuations indicate that density holes propagate radially inwards, with the skewness profile peaking at 7–10 cm inside the separatrix. Poloidal velocities of the density fluctuations measured using cross-correlation time delay estimation (CCTDE) are found to exhibit an intermittent behaviour. Zonal-flow analysis reveals the presence of poloidally symmetric coherent oscillations – low-frequency (LF) zonal flows and geodesic acoustic modes (GAM). Shearing rates of the observed zonal flows are found to be comparable to the turbulence decorrelation rate. The observed bursts in density-fluctuation power are followed by quiescent periods with a transient increase in the power of sheared flows. Three-wave interactions between broadband turbulence and a GAM are illustrated using the autobispectral technique. It is shown that the zonal flows and the density-fluctuation field are nonlinearly coupled and LF zonal flows mediate the energy transfer from high- to low-frequency density fluctuations.

Buffer-gas traps (BGTs) use inelastic interactions with nitrogen molecules to capture positrons from a continuous beam. These devices are invaluable for high-resolution studies of matter–antimatter interactions, antihydrogen research and positronium laser spectroscopy. We present a new project with the goal of producing a non-neutral plasma containing ${\sim }10^8$ low-energy positrons by installing a BGT on the NEPOMUC (NEutron induced POsitron source MUniCh) high-intensity positron beam. Details of the BGT are outlined and results are presented from experiments in which an electron beam, with a similar intensity and energy spread to the remoderated NEPOMUC beam, was used to create pulses of non-neutral electron plasma. The device is a vital component of the APEX (A Positron Electron eXperiment) project, which aims to create a low-temperature electron–positron pair plasma.

Astrophysical flows may be studied by reproducing similar conditions using a coaxial plasma accelerator operating in the deflagration regime (or plasma deflagration accelerator). This allows for the recreation and investigation of dynamics present in complex highly coupled plasma systems at the laboratory scale. We report on measurements of the plasma density, temperature, plasma potential and velocity found using a quadruple Langmuir probe (QLP) on such a deflagration accelerator in the form of the Stanford Coaxial High ENerGy (CHENG) device operating with multiple gases – specifically argon, nitrogen and hydrogen. Experiments show a general decrease in bulk plasma velocity with gas atomic mass from upwards of $120\ {\rm km}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$ with hydrogen to less than $30\ {\rm km}\ {\rm s}^{-1}$ with argon. There was an accompanying increase in peak plasma density with increasing atomic mass from ${\sim }3\times 10^{20}\ {\rm m}^{-3}$ with hydrogen to ${\sim }1.5 \times 10^{21}\ {\rm m}^{-3}$ with argon. It was found that the momentum flux and internal energy density also generally increase with atomic mass while the particle flux is constant between shots. Further investigation is needed to understand these correlations and the underlying physics. Lastly, comparisons with scaling laws show that while the CHENG device may be operated in such a way as to simulate the effects of bulk solar wind movement, it may not properly capture the thermal effects.

In this study, we explore the influence of the helicity of the magnetic axis – defined as the self-linking number of the curve – on the quality of quasi-isodynamic stellarator-symmetric configurations constructed using the near-axis expansion method (Plunk et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 85, 2019, 905850602; Camacho Mata et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 88, 2022, 905880503). A class of magnetic axes previously unexplored within this formalism is identified when analysing the axis shape of the QIPC configuration (Subbotin et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 46, 2006, p. 921): the case of half-helicity (per field period). We show that these shapes are compatible with the near-axis formalism and how they can be used to construct near-axis stellarators with up to five field periods, $\def\iotaslash{{\require{HTML} \style{display: inline-block; transform: rotate(-13deg)}{\iota}}\kern-7pt{\require{HTML} \style{display: inline-block; transform: rotate(-25deg)}{-}}}{\epsilon _{\mathrm {eff}}} \approx 1.3\,\%$, and similar rotational transform to existing conventionally optimized designs, without the need of a plasma boundary optimization.

The ASACUSA (atomic spectroscopy and collisions using slow antiprotons) Cusp experiment requires the production of dense positron plasmas with a high repetition rate to produce a beam of antihydrogen. In this work, details of the positron production apparatus used for the first observation of the antihydrogen beam, and subsequent measurements, are described in detail. This apparatus replaced the previous compact trap design resulting in an improvement in the positron accumulation rate by a factor of $52\pm 3$.

This paper presents a magnetohydrodynamic model that describes the small-amplitude fluctuations with wavelengths comparable to ion inertial length in the presence of a relativistically strong mean magnetic field. The set of derived equations is virtually identical to the non-relativistic Hall reduced magnetohydrodynamics (Schekochihin et al., J. Plasma Phys., vol. 85, 2019, 905850303), differing only by a few constants that take into account the relativistic corrections. This means that all the properties of kinetic Alfvén turbulence and ion cyclotron turbulence inherent in the non-relativistic Hall regime persist unchanged even in a magnetically dominated regime.

We review the modulation stability of parallel-propagating/field-aligned whistler-mode chorus (WMC) waves propagating in a warm plasma from a formal perspective with a focus on wave–particle interactions via ponderomotive forces. The modulation instability criteria are characterised by the group velocity dispersion, $d c_g/dk$, for whistler-mode waves and a condition on the ratio between the group velocity $c_g$ and the electron sound speed $c_{s,e}$. We also demonstrate that in order to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution of the envelope and the formation of packets (according to this mechanism), one necessarily needs to account for the motion of ions within the system, leading to an ionic influence on the modulation instability threshold determined by the ion fraction of the plasma. Finally, we demonstrate that chirping may be captured when higher-order effects are included within the spatiotemporal evolution of the amplitude. This yields not only an explicit expression for the sweep rate but also identifies a possible origin for the power band gap that occurs at half the electron gyrofrequency. Numerical validation demonstrates that the interaction between wave packets is a source for the emergence of tones observed within mission data, and such interactions may be a major source of the electron energisation which WMC are responsible for.

The objective of the present paper is to investigate the constancy of the topological invariant, denoted the non-barotropic generalized cross-helicity in the case of non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Existing work considers only ideal barotropic MHD and ideal non-barotropic MHD. Here, we consider dissipative processes in the form of thermal conduction, finite electrical conductivity and viscosity and the effect of these processes on the cross-helicity conservation. An analytical approach has been adopted to obtain the mathematical expressions for the time derivative of the cross-helicity. Obtained results show that the generalized cross-helicity is not conserved in the non-ideal MHD limit and indicate which processes affect the helicity and which do not. Furthermore, we indicate the configurations in which this topological constant is conserved despite the dissipative processes. Some examples and applications are also given.

The theoretical investigation of relevant turbulent transport mechanisms in H-mode pedestals is a great scientific and numerical challenge. In this study, we address this challenge by global, nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of a full pedestal up to the separatrix, supported by a detailed characterisation of gyrokinetic instabilities from just inside the pedestal top to the pedestal centre and foot. We present ASDEX Upgrade pedestal simulations using an upgraded version of the gyrokinetic, Eulerian, delta-f code GENE (genecode.org) that enables stable global simulations at experimental plasma $\beta$ values. The turbulent transport is found to exhibit a multi-channel, multi-scale character throughout the pedestal with the dominant contribution transitioning from ion-scale trapped electron modes/micro-tearing modes at the pedestal top to electron-scale electron temperature gradient modes in the steep gradient region. Consequently, the turbulent electron heat flux changes from ion to electron scales and the ion heat flux reduces to almost neoclassic values in the pedestal centre. $E\times B$ shear is found to strongly reduce heat flux levels in all channels (electron, ion, electrostatic, electromagnetic) and the interplay of magnetic shear and pressure gradient is found to locally stabilise ion-scale instabilities.

In decaying magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence with a strong magnetic field, the spectral magnetic energy density is known to increase with time at small wavenumbers $k$, provided the spectrum at low $k$ is sufficiently steep. This process is called inverse cascading and occurs for an initial Batchelor spectrum, where the magnetic energy per linear wavenumber interval increases like $k^4$. For an initial Saffman spectrum that is proportional to $k^2$, however, inverse cascading has not been found in the past. We study here the case of an intermediate $k^3$ spectrum, which may be relevant for magnetogenesis in the early Universe during the electroweak epoch. This case is not well understood in view of the standard Taylor expansion of the magnetic energy spectrum for small $k$. Using high resolution MHD simulations, we show that, also in this case, there is inverse cascading with a strength just as expected from the conservation of the Hosking integral, which governs the decay of an initial Batchelor spectrum. Even for shallower $k^\alpha$ spectra with spectral index $\alpha >3/2$, our simulations suggest a spectral increase at small $k$ with time $t$ proportional to $t^{4\alpha /9-2/3}$. The critical spectral index of $\alpha =3/2$ is related to the slope of the spectral envelope in the Hosking phenomenology. Our simulations with $2048^3$ mesh points now suggest inverse cascading even for an initial Saffman spectrum.

Pellet injection is currently the primary candidate for achieving efficient plasma fuelling, one of the key issues for steady-state operation in large fusion devices. In this paper, pellet injection experiments are performed for several magnetic configurations of the TJ-II stellarator. The aim of this study is to increase the understanding of the role played by rational surfaces in plasmoid drift and deposition profiles in stellarators. The analysis of experimentally observed plasmoid drifts is supported by simulations of such cases made with the HPI2 code. Plasmoid drift is found to be significantly reduced, as in tokamaks, in the vicinity of rational surfaces. This is attributed to the fact that plasmoid external charge reconnection lengths are shorter near rational surfaces, resulting in a more effective damping of the plasmoid drift. Although the effect of plasmoid external currents on the drift is expected to be negligible in stellarators, compared with those caused by plasmoid internal currents, the effect observed in TJ-II is clearly measurable. In addition, simulations show that enhanced drift reductions near rational surfaces lead to significantly different deposition profiles for the magnetic configurations included in this study. This implies that it should be possible to select the magnetic configurations to obtain more efficient pellet fuelling.

Thanks to the isomorphism between the drift-Poisson and Euler equations, inviscid two-dimensional fluid experiments can be performed in magnetized, single-component plasmas in Penning–Malmberg traps. Within this analogy, a trapped electron plasma column is equivalent to a two-dimensional vortex. Here, we focus our attention on the generation of V-states, i.e. $l$-fold symmetric rotating vorticity patches where the deformation with respect to the circular cross-section has reached the nonlinear regime. We detail a linear theoretical analysis and devise an experimental routine to generate V-states through the precise excitation of single Kelvin–Helmholtz perturbations in a magnetized electron plasma. This technique makes use of suitable multipolar rotating electric fields, which are shown to be able to select the desired wavemode. In particular, with rotating fields, a hardware limitation in the highest accessible mode is removed and nonlinear Kelvin–Helmholtz waves of generic order $l$ can be attained, which pave the way for further investigations on the evolution and stability properties of V-states. Systematic experimental results for the selective mode growth in the linear and nonlinear regimes up to saturation and collapse are discussed.
