Fourteen taxa of stromatoporoids are described from allochthonous blocks of reefal limestone embedded in siltstones of late Gedinnian to Siegenian age. The fauna is a mixture of genera that characterize Ludlovian–Gedinnian rocks (Actinodictyon, Parallelostroma, Syringostromella) and those that characterize Emsian–Eifelian rocks (Atopostroma, Anostylostroma, Habrostroma, Syringostroma). The following new species are described: Gerronostroma franklinense, Gerronostroma nivale, Actinodictyon venustum, and Syringostromella praecox. The new genus Belemnostroma with type species B. hastatum n. sp. is established for stromatoporoids with the basic structure of Anostylostroma but penetrated by large, rodlike megapillars. Species with long coenosteles are excluded from Stromatopora on the basis that they are not congeneric with the type species and many species assigned to Ferestromatopora should be reassigned to Stromatopora. Previously described species of Atopostroma, Stromatopora, and Parallelostroma are recognized and redescribed.

Quaternary raised marine terraces containing the remains of diverse, shallow water marine invertebrate faunas are widespread across the coast of Angola. These deposits and faunas have not been studied in the same detail as contemporaneous features in northwest and southernmost Africa. We analyzed the fossil assemblages and sedimentology of two closely spaced middle Pleistocene marine terrace deposits in Baía das Pipas, southwest Angola. This revealed 46 gastropod and 29 bivalve species, along with scleractinian corals, encrusting bryozoans, polychaete tubes, barnacles, and echinoids. The fauna is characteristic of intertidal and nearshore rocky substrates and sandy soft-bottom habitats. Sedimentological analysis is consistent with faunal data and indicates an upper shoreface paleoenvironment along a gravel coast. This diverse fauna stands out as a rare example of a marine Pleistocene assemblage from over 6,000 km of the West African coast. The assemblage is dominated by extant tropical West African molluscs, including species from the “Senegalese fauna” that colonized northern Africa and beyond during Pleistocene interstadials. Additionally, as along the modern coast of the Namibe Desert, the influence of the cool-water Benguela Current is apparent in the paleofauna by the occurrence of a few temperate species. The distribution and thermal tolerances of extant species identified in the Pipas fauna indicate that this region experienced similar climatic and oceanographic conditions as that of the present during this interstadial. Seasonal temperature varied between ∼20 and 28°C and resulted from upwelling in this tropical setting.

Isolated cheek teeth of the hypsodont one-toed horses Astrohippus stocki and Dinohippus mexicanus are described from ten localities within the classic vertebrate-bearing beds of the Bone Valley phosphate mining district and one new locality (containing the Lockwood Meadows Local Fauna) in Sarasota, Florida. All occurrences of these taxa are from the upper Bone Valley Formation and further confirm a late Hemphillian (late Miocene to early Pliocene) age, or within the range of about 5.4 to 4.5 myBP for this part of the sedimentary sequence. In contrast to the common occurrences of hipparions in the Bone Valley Formation, A. stocki and D. mexicanus are relatively rare. In some dental charcters such as protocone length and crown height, A. stocki and D. mexicanus are no more advanced in their stage of evolution than the advanced three-toed horses Neohipparion eurystyle, N. gidleyi and Nannippus peninsulatus.

Late Tertiary Carnivores are rare as reported in the fossil record for Mexico. The felids discussed in this paper from the state of Guanajuato represent the most diverse assemblage of this taxonomic group thus far known from the country. They include Machairodus cf. M. coloradensis, Pseudaelurus? intrepidus, and Felis cf. F. studeri. The last-named taxon has not previously been recognized from the late Tertiary of Mexico, and Pseudaelurus has only questionably been identified in the country (but not described or discussed). None of these taxa have yet been reported from areas further south. While age determinations for the above felids from Guanajuato were based on associated faunal constituents, especially abundant and diverse equids, the felids themselves can be useful as chronostratigraphic indicators.

Restudy of two Early Silurian (Aeronian) stricklandioid species, Stricklandinia transversa Grabau, 1925 and Stricklandiella robusta Rong and Yang, 1981 from the Yichang area of South China, leads to the recognition of two new genera, Sinokulumbella and Sinostricklandiella. Two types of spondylia and four types of cardinalia are recognized for the Stricklandioidea and can be used for classification of the superfamily at the generic or even familial level. On the basis of these characters, five groups (typified by Stricklandia, Stricklandiella, Kulumbella, Microcardinalia, and Aenigmastrophia) can be recognized within the superfamily. Sinokulumbella n. gen., with a small, shallow, bowl-shaped spondylium and a pair of outer hinge plates that are discrete from the crura, is regarded to be affiliated with the Kulumbella group. Sinostricklandiella n. gen. has superimposed plicae and costae, although its internal structures are similar to the Stricklandiella group. A revised classification of stricklandioids implies that the Chinese pentamerides were characterized by strong provincialism during the early and middle Llandovery. This interpretation is supported further by the complete lack of true Stricklandia and Microcardinalia lineages in South China. Different stocks of stricklandioids in Baltica, Laurentia, South China, Siberia, and Kazakhstan may have experienced allopatric evolution, punctuated by several pulses of faunal migration or exchange between these paleoplates during the Llandovery. Evolution of the Stricklandia lineage is significantly different from that of Kulumbella and Sinokulumbella, particularly in that the outer plates disappeared earlier in the kulumbellids than in the stricklandiids.

The Nemestrinidae or tangle-veined flies are a small group of brachycerous flies with about 300 extant and fossil species (Evenhuis, 1994). Many of them are large to medium-sized flies with a densely pilose body. They have a unique wing venation with a compound diagonal vein which is an apomorphic character for Nemestrinidae (Yeates, 1994). The diagonal vein comprises elements of veins R, M, and Cu and it crosses the wing obliquely. Adult nemestrinids often occur in open areas and many feed on the nectar of flowers (Richter, 1997). Nemestrinid larvae appear to be internal parasitoids of Orthoptera (grasshoppers) and can even control the population numbers of Acridoidea (Orthoptera: Caelifera); however, the species of Hirmoneura Meigen, 1820 develop in larvae of scarabaeid beetles (Richter, 1997). As far as is known, the female places the eggs in the host's habitat and the first-instar larvae actively search out their host. Larval development takes about 40 days, but there may be a long diapause (inactive period) before 20 to 30 days of pupation take place. Adults live for about 25 to 45 days (Richter, 1997).

Two new flat-backed archipolypodan millipede taxa, Orsadesmus rubecollus n. gen. and sp. and Zanclodesmus willetti n. gen. and sp., are described from the Upper Devonian of Clinton County, Pennsylvania, and Miguasha, Québec, respectively. These new taxa are placed in the new family Zanclodesmidae within the order Archidesmida. Archidesmida have previously only been described from the United Kingdom, and their presence in North America confirms a geographic continuum in the millipede fauna across the Old Red Sandstone Continent during the Devonian.

Conulariids of West Africa have received relatively little detailed attention in the literature on this widespread extinct group of marine cnidarians. Recently, however, Babcock et al. (1995) described two new species, Paraconularia feldmanni and P. sahara, from the upper part of the Mississippian (Visean) Talak Shale Formation in the Tim Mersoi Basin of northern Niger. This was the first report of the genus Paraconularia Sinclair, 1940 from Africa as well as the first assignment of Carboniferous conulariids from that continent to the species level. Since then two of the present authors have collected 24 additional conulariid specimens from the Talak Formation in the same area that yielded the two specimens described by Babcock et al. (1995). Like the previously described material, most of the new specimens, described below, have been worn or weathered to such an extent that it is difficult to identify them to the species level. In some cases, moreover, identification to the genus level is problematical, but this may ultimately be due to the fact that currently recognized conulariid genera (e.g., Moore and Harrington, 1956b) have been defined phenetically, rather than on the basis of prior analysis of the phylogenetic relationships among conulariid species. This means that at least some currently recognized conulariid genera may have been defined by similarities that are primitive or analogous.

The early Oligocene (Rupelian) sirenian Halitherium schinzii Kaup, 1838, which represents the type species of the genus Halitherium Kaup, 1838, is revised herein based on a morphological re-evaluation of skeletal material originally assigned to this taxon. This study provides new and comprehensive information on the cranial and postcranial anatomy and allows the distinction of two sympatric species. Following a recent approach on the invalidity and subsequent rejection of H. schinzii Kaup, 1838, Kaupitherium gruelli new genus new species is established on the basis of a nearly complete holotype. The second taxon resembles K. gruelli n. sp. in a number of skeletal features, such as reduced nasals and absence of the canines, but can be clearly distinguished mainly by the post-canine dental formula and the supraoccipital morphology. The diagnostic skullcap of a species formerly synonymized under “H. schinzii” is re-validated as the holotype of K. bronni (Krauss, 1858). On the basis of paleoecological implications, a hypothesis is established to explain the overlapping stratigraphic and biogeographic occurrences (i.e., sympatry of both taxa). A diagnosis and up-to-date synonymy complement the taxonomical information. The revision of “H. schinzii” provides new data on the past sirenian diversity and forms the basis for a taxonomic and systematic re-evaluation of species originally grouped in the genus “Halitherium.”

Large body sizes among nonavian theropod dinosaurs is a major feature in the evolution of this clade, with theropods reaching greater sizes than any other terrestrial carnivores. However, the early evolution of large body sizes among theropods is obscured by an incomplete fossil record, with the largest Triassic theropods represented by only a few individuals of uncertain ontogenetic stage. Here I describe two neotheropod specimens from the Upper Triassic Bull Canyon Formation of New Mexico and place them in a broader comparative context of early theropod anatomy. These specimens possess morphologies indicative of ontogenetic immaturity (e.g., absence of femoral bone scars, lack of co-ossification between the astragalus and calcaneum), and phylogenetic analyses recover these specimens as early-diverging neotheropods in a polytomy with other early neotheropods at the base of the clade. Ancestral state reconstruction for body size suggests that the ancestral theropod condition was small (~240 mm femur length), but the ancestral neotheropod was larger (~300–340 mm femur length), with coelophysoids experiencing secondary body size reduction, although this is highly dependent on the phylogenetic position of a few key taxa. Theropods evolved large body sizes before the Triassic–Jurassic extinction, as hypothesized in most other ancestral state reconstructions of theropod body sizes, but remained rare relative to smaller theropods until the Jurassic.

The new conodont genus Magnigondolella is recognized based on specimens recovered from the Anisian (Middle Triassic) of British Columbia in Canada, and Nevada in the USA. This new genus encompasses problematic specimens with high carinas, which have recently been collectively referred to as Neogondolella ex gr. regalis Mosher. Ten species from North America are herein assigned to Magnigondolella n. gen., including the eight new species M. alexanderi, M. cyri, M. julii, M. nebuchadnezzari, M. salomae, M. n. sp. A, M. n. sp. B, and M. n. sp. C, as well as the two existing species M. regalis (Mosher) and M. dilacerata (Golding and Orchard). Other species from the Tethys region are also tentatively assigned to Magnigondolella n. gen. Based on published records, the genus appears to range from the Spathian to the upper Anisian in North America. The recognition of eight new species from the Anisian significantly increases the conodont biodiversity of this period, which has previously been regarded as a time of low diversity. Although some of the species included within Magnigondolella n. sp. have relatively long stratigraphic ranges, many have been identified in both British Columbia and Nevada, and therefore show potential for biostratigraphic correlation on a regional scale.

Rare patellogastropod limpets are described from the Cenomanian to Campanian (Cretaceous) age sediments in Hokkaido, northern Japan and Sakhalin, eastern Russia. Shell structure analysis has revealed the presence of five shell structure groups within six species, permitting the allocation of three of the species identified to modern clades. However, the other three species recorded belong to shell-structure groups not known at the present day. The species described in this paper are Patella soyaensis new species, Patella sp., Patelloida obirensis new species, ?Patelloida miyauchii new species, an indeterminate species of the Lottiinae, and an indeterminate species and belonging to an unknown family. Two species are recognized as belonging to the Patellidae and three species to the Lottiidae, demonstrating that two of the three major families found to inhabit present-day rocky shore environments already existed in the Cretaceous. The discovery of two Patella species belonging to a modern clade found in South Africa indicates that the fossil record of the clade dates back more than 80 Ma and the distribution of the clade has changed markedly since that time. The occurrence of Patelloida from the northwestern Pacific further elucidates the worldwide distribution for this genus during the Cretaceous.

The nearly ubiquitous mite suborder Oribatida, which comprises mostly mycophages and saprophages in organic soil horizons, has a long geological history. Early derivative taxa are known from middle and late Devonian deposits (Norton et al., 1988; Subías and Arillo, 2002) and members of the highly derived cohort Brachypylina have existed since the Jurassic (Krivolutsky and Krasilov, 1977, Selden et al., 2008). The group is commonly represented as inclusion-fossils in amber, with about 100 species known worldwide. Except for four Cretaceous fossils from Siberia (Bulanova-Zachvatkina, 1974; Krivolutsky and Ryabinin, 1976) and Spain (Arillo and Subías, 2000, 2002), the named amber species are of Tertiary age. The majority of these have been discovered in the Priabonian (middle Eocene) Baltic amber deposits of northern Europe (Labandeira et al., 1997; Norton, 2006).

The Middle Ordovician Simpson Group of southern Oklahoma consists of an exceptionally continuous record of carbonates, shales and quartz sandstones which accumulated in a shallow shelf environment. Vertical changes in the distribution of trilobite genera from these rocks can reasonably be interpreted as due to age rather than the influence of various environments or faunal provinces. The affinities of the lower Simpson trilobite faunas are with inner shelf faunas of trilobite zones M and N known from Utah and eastern Nevada and, to a lesser degree, with early Middle Ordovician faunas of Quebec and Newfoundland. Middle Simpson (McLish and Tulip Creek) Formations reflect slightly higher energy conditions and very few well-preserved trilobites. Those few genera present (for example, Pliomerops and Eorobergia) are more typical of the Chazy Group and correlatives from eastern North America. The higher Bromide Formation, also of shelf origin, displays a distinctly eastern fauna, very similar to elements found in the Chazy Group and the presumably younger Edinburg Group of the east. Although many of Cooper's (1956) Middle Ordovician correlations can be understood, the stage names proposed at that time overlap in some cases and lack proper biostratigraphic definition in others. Abandonment of these stage names is urged until description of Middle Ordovician conodont, graptolite and shelly faunas now underway is nearer completion.

The Microsyopidae are extinct mammals from the late Paleocene–late Eocene of North America and the late Paleocene of Europe. While results from phylogenetic analyses support euarchontan affinities, specific relationships of microsyopids to other plesiadapiforms (plausible stem primates), Euprimates (crown primates), Scandentia (treeshrews), and Dermoptera (colugos) are unresolved. An exceptionally well-preserved cranium of Microsyops annectens includes a basicranium that is generally primitive relative to that of other extinct and extant euarchontans in having: (1) a transpromontorial groove for an unreduced internal carotid artery (ICA) entering the middle ear posteromedially; (2) grooves (not tubes) on the promontorium, marking the course for both stapedial and promontorial branches of the ICA; (3) a foramen faciale that opens into the middle ear cavity, with the facial nerve exiting through a stylomastoid foramen primitivum; and (4) unexpanded caudal and rostral tympanic processes of the petrosal. The absence of any preserved bullar elements in the middle ear contrasts with that of other plesiadapiforms for which the region has been recovered, all of which have evidence of an ossified bulla. Microsyops lacks many of the specialized cranial characteristics of crown scandentians and dermopterans. The basicranial anatomy of microsyopids does not provide evidence in support of a clear link to any of the extant euarchontans, and suggests that the primitive morphology of this region in Euarchonta was little differentiated from that observed in the primitive placental mammals.

Modiomytilus n. gen. is described from Tertiary sediments exposed in the southwestern corner of Santa Cruz province (Argentina). This large mytilid is characterized by its ornamentation of strong comarginal undulations, its smooth ligamentary ridge, and its relatively large anterior adductor muscle. Two new species are assigned to it: Modiomytilus argentinensis n. sp., from the Centinela Formation (Miocene) south of Lago Argentino, and Modiomytilus mercerati n. sp., from the Río Turbio Formation (Eocene) in Sierra Dorotea. Although other species belonging to this new taxon and previously referred to Mytilus have been described from Tertiary sediments in the region, none are known so far from rocks of comparable age outside Patagonia.

Catenipora is one of the most common tabulate coral genera occurring in various lithofacies in the Upper Ordovician Xiazhen Formation at Zhuzhai in South China. A combination of traditional multivariate analysis and geometric morphometrics is applied to a large number of specimens to distinguish and identify species. Based on three major principal components extracted from 11 morphological characters, three major groups as determined by the cluster-analysis dendrogram are considered to be morphospecies. Their validity and distinctiveness are confirmed by discriminant analysis, descriptive statistics, and bivariate plots. Tabularium area and common wall thickness are the most meaningful characters to distinguish the three morphospecies. Geometric morphometrics is adopted to compare the morphospecies with types and/or figured specimens of species previously reported from the vicinity of Zhuzhai. Despite discrepancies in corallite size, principal component analysis and discriminant analysis, as well as consideration of overall morphological characteristics, indicate that the morphospecies represent C. zhejiangensis Yu in Yu et al., 1963, C. shiyangensis Lin and Chow, 1977, and C. dianbiancunensis Lin and Chow, 1977.

Catenipora occurs in seven stratigraphic intervals in the Xiazhen Formation at Zhuzhai, representing a variety of heterogeneous environments. The coralla preservation is variable due to differential compaction; coralla preserved in limestones are commonly intact and in growth position, whereas those in shales are mostly crushed or fragmentary. The size and shape of corallites are considered primarily to be species-specific characters, but are also related to the depositional environments. In all species, morphological characters, including corallite size, septal development, and shape and size of lacunae, show high variability in accordance with lithofacies and stratigraphic position. The intraspecific differences in corallite size at various localities in the Zhuzhai area may indicate responses to local environmental factors, but may also reflect genetic differences if there was limited connection among populations.

Pliomerina Chugaeva, 1958, a characteristic element of the peri-Gondwanan Eokosovopeltis-Pliomerina Province, occurs in Llanvirn and Caradoc strata of the Argentine Precordillera. Three protaspid instars are present in the ontogeny of the Early Caradoc Pliomerina peripata new species. A species possibly representing Pliomerella is a rare element in Early Caradoc strata of the Las Aguaditas Formation. Prosopiscus is represented by a Llanvirn species with a first record of protaspid larvae for the enigmatic Family Prosopiscidae. Early growth stages support closest relations of prosopiscids to Phacopina. The presence of Pliomerina and Prosopiscus, along with the cheirurid Pateraspis, demonstrates a peri-Gondwanan influence on the Precordilleran fauna by the Llanvirn, and supports the proximity of the Precordillera terrane to the South American margin by that time.

Study of the oldest macluritid gastropod, Macluritella stantoni Kirk, 1927 from the Lower Ordovician of Colorado, has revealed that its early whorls are openly and dextrally coiled, in contrast to those in later teleoconchs which are sinistrally coiled. This is the first documentation of heterostrophic coiling in members of the Macluritoidea, which have been considered to be dextrally hyperstrophic. Juvenile M. stantoni may be interpreted as dextrally orthostrophic and, thus, it had the same type of soft-body-shell arrangement as the vast majority of living and fossil gastropods. This intepretation also suggests that the Macluritoidea evolved from the dextrally orthostrophic gastropods, and their dextral hyperstrophy is derived and not a primary feature. In addition, occurrence of shell heterostrophy in M. stantoni brings additional evidence that the Macluritoidea and Onychochiloidea are not closely related taxa. Relationships between the Macluritoidea and Euomphaloidea are still uncertain. This study provides the oldest evidence (Early Ordovician) for shell heterostrophy in the class Gastropoda.

The orthidine brachiopod genera Plaesiomys and Hebertella are significant constituents of Late Ordovician benthic marine communities throughout Laurentia. Species-level phylogenetic analyses were conducted on both genera to inform systematic revisions and document evolutionary relationships. Phylogenetic analyses combined discrete and continuous characters, from which character states were determined using a statistical approach, and utilized both cladistic and Bayesian methodologies. Plaesiomys cutterensis, P. idahoensis, and P. occidentalis are herein recognized as distinct species rather than subspecies of P. subquadratus. Similarly, Hebertella montoyensis and H. prestonensis are recognized as distinct species separate from H. occidentalis, and H. richmondensis is recognized as a distinct species rather than a geographical variant of H. alveata. Hebertella subjugata is removed from its tentative synonymy with H. occidentalis and revalidated.

The development of species-level evolutionary hypotheses for Plaesiomys and Hebertella provides a detailed framework for assessing evolutionary and paleobiogeographic patterns of Late Ordovician brachiopods from Laurentia. The geographic range of Hebertella expanded throughout Laurentia during the Richmondian into both intracratonic and marginal basins. Plaesiomys subquadratus participated in the Late Ordovician Richmondian Invasion. The recovered phylogenetic topology for Plaesiomys suggests that P. subquadratus may have migrated into the Cincinnati region from a basin situated to the paleo-northeast.
