A new dromomerycine palaeomerycid artiodactyl, Surameryx acrensis new genus new species, from upper Miocene deposits of the Amazon Basin documents the first and only known occurrence of this Northern Hemisphere group in South America. Osteological characters place the new taxon among the earliest known dromomerycine artiodactyls, most similar to Barbouromeryx trigonocorneus, which lived in North America during the early to middle Miocene, 20–16 Ma. Although it has long been assumed that the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI) began with the closure of the Isthmus of Panama in the late Pliocene, or ca. 3.0–2.5 Ma, the presence of this North American immigrant in Amazonia is further evidence that terrestrial connections between North America and South America through Panama existed as early as the early late Miocene, or ca. 9.5 Ma. This early interchange date was previously indicated by approximately coeval specimens of proboscideans, peccaries, and tapirs in South America and ground sloths in North America. Although palaeomerycids apparently never flourished in South America, proboscideans thrived there until the end of the Pleistocene, and peccaries and tapirs diversified and still live there today.

Portheus patagonicus Ameghino, 1901, described on the basis of an isolated tooth from the Leonian Stage (Upper Oligocene–Lower Miocene) of Patagonia, was interpreted as belonging to an ichthyodectiform fish. Recently, the holotype was relocated and an additional tooth was found. Comparison of both specimens and some additional information permit the identification of the teeth as belonging to a delphinoid cetacean of the family Kentriodontidae. This is the first report of this family in the southern Atlantic region.

A new turtle, Puentemys mushaisaensis, from the middle to late Paleocene Cerrejón Formation of Colombia, is described on the basis of a partial skull and many partial to nearly complete carapaces and plastrons representing multiple ontogenetic stages. Whereas P. mushaisaensis is unique in aspects of its shell morphology, it shares many diagnostic characteristics of bothremydid pleurodirans, including a long exoccipital-quadrate contact, a very low and rounded almost circular carapace, and a thinner internal bone cortex than that of the external cortex in both the carapace and plastron. With a maximum carapacial length of 151 cm, P. mushaisaensis is the largest known bothremydid turtle and represents the first occurrence of bothremydids in the Paleogene of South American tropics. Results from a cladistic analysis of bothremydids indicate that P. mushaisaensis shares a close relationship with Foxemys mechinorum from the Late Cretaceous of Europe, indicating a wide-spread geographical distribution for bothremydines during the Late Cretaceous–Paleocene.

The Tenebrionoidea is among the most diverse group of beetles, but its fossil record is rare. A definitive oldest tenebrionoid beetle, Wuhua jurassica new genus new species, is described from the Middle Jurassic of Daohugou, China. It is tentatively placed as Family incertae sedis, and distinguished from others of Tenebrionoidea by the unusual combination of following characters: body convex; head strongly deflexed, not received into prothorax; antennae filiform; pygidium absent; tarsi simple and tarsal claws pectinate. This discovery extends the time of origin of Tenebrionoidea to the Middle Jurassic. Furthermore, the record of Mesozoic tenebrionoid beetles are summarized and discussed.

Superbly preserved specimens of Eucalyptocrinites tuberculatus from the Waldron Shale (Silurian, Wenlockian) of Indiana have been found with epibionts attached in living position to their stems. The rhynchonellid brachiopod Stegerhynchus indianense, the tabulate coral Favosites forbesi, the annelids? Spirorbis and Cornulites, bryozoans, and rarely the ichnogenus Tremichnus utilized living crinoids as secondary tiering surfaces. Crinozoans also attached to upright crinoid columns, and their holdfasts are the most abundant epibionts on pluricolumnals. Eucalyptocrinites crassus individuals contributed to the success of their epibionts by providing stable attachment surfaces elevated up to one meter above the sediment-water interface. Although crinoid-epibiont relationships are frequently blurred by taphonomic processes, articulated crinoid specimens and encrusters on pluricolumnals suggest that secondary tiering was a significant paleoecological element in the Waldron Shale.

The remarkable brachiopod Xianshanella haikouensis, from the Early Cambrian Chengjiang Lagerstätte, was briefly reported based on only two extraordinarily preserved specimens. Details of valve interiors remain unknown due to a lack of available material. We herein reillustrate the holotype of X. haikouensis, and, on the basis of many additional specimens from the type locality, provide further information on this brachiopod taxon, including shell ornamentation, a U-shaped digestive tract, mantle canal systems, lophophores, muscle scars, and well-defined visceral areas in the valves. This exceptional brachiopod is characterized by a biconvex, rounded, knob-shaped shell lacking visible pseudointerarea in the valves, an elongate and muscular pedicle, and, especially, its possession of exceptional setal fringes. A restudy of a number of new specimens justifies assigning Xianshanella to the family Obolidae. The elongate and horny setae of X. haikouensis, coupled with the massive pedicle in many cases with its end attached to shells of other animals, indicate that this species was an epibenthic, sessile suspension feeder, attached by a pedicle.

New species of Aphelognathus, Belodina, Taoqupognathus, and Yaoxianognathus have been identified in the Late Ordovician Cliefden Caves Limestone Group in central-western New South Wales, Australia. Of the Aphelognathus species, Aphelognathus percivali n. sp. and A. webbyi n. sp. occur in the basal Gleesons Limestone Member and A. packhami n. sp. and A. stevensi n. sp. occur 30 m higher in the Wyoming Limestone Member. It seems likely from the similarity of several of the elements that A. packhami is closely related to A. percivali, and A. stevensi to A. webbyi. Yaoxianognathus wrighti n. sp. occurs in the Gleesons Limestone Member but not in the Wyoming Limestone Member. Belodina confluens, Belodina hillae n. sp., Belodina n. sp., Panderodus gracilis, Taoqupognathus philipi n. sp., and Phragmodus? tunguskaensis occur at both horizons. The conodonts suggest a middle to late Caradocian (mid-Shermanian to mid-Edenian) age for the lowest part of the Cliefden Caves Limestone. The occurrence in southeastern Australia of the forms Taoqupognathus, Yaoxianognathus, and Phragmodus? tunguskaensis suggest affinities to coeval faunas in China and eastern Siberia. The four new species of Aphelognathus are distinct from known species in the Late Ordovician of North America and Europe but they may help characterize a paleobiogeographic region that includes eastern Australia and southeast Asia.

Fragmentary remains of a long-frilled ceratopsian dinosaur from the El Picacho Formation (Maastrichtian) of West Texas pertain to an undescribed form. The remains are, however, insufficient to fully characterize this species. This ceratopsian has long thick squamosals with marginal undulations, nasals lacking a discrete horncore, a thin parietal, and large trihedral epijugals. The braincase has very thick lateral walls, and a well-developed postfrontal foramen. Four species of horned dinosaurs are known from Upper Cretaceous strata of the American Southwest: Pentaceratops sternbergii, Chasmosaurus mariscalensis, Torosaurus utahensis, and the El Picacho ceratopsian. All of these belong to the subfamily Chasmosaurinae.

The Early Cretaceous non-marine ostracod genera Hourcqia Krömmelbein and Pattersoncypris Bate are reinstated. A previously published referral of Hourcqia to Cypridea Bosquet is rejected due to the absence of an anteroventral rostrum in the holotype of the type species Hourcqia africana Krömmelbein. The genus Hourcqia is characterized by an “inverse” valve ratio (right valve larger than left) and the lack of an anteroventral rostrum, and the diagnosis of the genus is broadened to accommodate ornamented forms, resulting in the acceptance of five species: Hourcqia africana, H. confluens (Krömmelbein and Weber), H. kouilouensis (Grosdidier), H. bateke (Grosdidier) and H. sylvesterbradleyi (Bate). The previously published synonymy of Pattersoncypris with the genus Harbinia Tsao is also rejected. The diagnosis of Pattersoncypris is refined, meaning that three species are recognized: Pattersoncypris micropapillosa Bate, P. salitrensis (Krömmelbein and Weber), and P. sinuata (Krömmelbein and Weber). The new genus Kroemmelbeincypris is erected for two species initially assigned to Hourcqia, and subsequently to Pattersoncypris and Harbinia by different authors: Kroemmelbeincypris symmetrica (Krömmelbein and Weber) and K. angulata (Krömmelbein and Weber). The genus Hourcqia is diagnostic of latest Barremian non-marine settings, whilst Pattersoncypris and Kroemmelbeincypris characterize Aptian saline lacustrine environments. The geographic ranges of all three genera are restricted to northeastern and eastern Brazil and northern and western Africa, though a species of Pattersoncypris (P. dakotaensis Tibert and Colin) is also present in the United States.

Two female woolly mammoth neonates from permafrost in the Siberian Arctic are the most complete mammoth specimens known. Lyuba, found on the Yamal Peninsula, and Khroma, from northernmost Yakutia, died at ages of approximately one and two months, respectively. Both specimens were CT-scanned, yielding detailed information on the stage of development of their dentition and skeleton and insight into conditions associated with death. Both mammoths died after aspirating mud. Khroma's body was frozen soon after death, leaving her tissues in excellent condition, whereas Lyuba's body underwent postmortem changes that resulted in authigenic formation of nodules of the mineral vivianite associated with her cranium and within diaphyses of long bones. CT data provide the only comprehensive approach to mapping vivianite distribution. Three-dimensional modeling and measurement of segmented long bones permits comparison between these individuals and with previously recovered specimens. CT scans of long bones and foot bones show developmental features such as density gradients that reveal ossification centers. The braincase of Khroma was segmented to show the approximate morphology of the brain; its volume is slightly less (∼2,300 cm3) than that of neonate elephants (∼2,500 cm3). Lyuba's premaxillae are more gracile than those of Khroma, possibly a result of temporal and/or geographic variation but probably also reflective of their age difference. Segmentation of CT data and 3-D modeling software were used to produce models of teeth that were too complex for traditional molding and casting techniques.

Thirty-one gastropod species and one type of isolated larval shell are described from a quarry near Ambatolafia in the Mahajanga Basin, northwestern Madagascar. The ammonite fauna indicates a lower Albian age of the fauna (Cleoniceras besairiei Zone). The taxonomic position of the species described earlier is reviewed, incorporating new data on shell structure and protoconch morphology. Twelve species and one genus are new, with four species described in open nomenclature. The oldest hitherto known representatives of Cocculina sensu lato, Iphitus, Conjectura, Entomope, Tomura, and possibly Vatopsis and Paladmete, are described. Nacre is documented in a species of Semisolarium, providing further evidence for the position of this genus within the Vetigastropoda. Eight of the species occur also in the Cretaceous of Europe or are tentatively assigned to European species. Three species have close relatives in the Aptian/Albian of Japan, one species may have relations to the Albian of Texas. The new genus is Mahajangina (family uncertain) for a species having a small, trochispiral teleoconch with spines on the periphery, and a conical, bicarinate larval shell. The new species are: Cirsocerithium collignoni, Zardinistylus betsibokaensis, Pommerozygia mahajangensis, Conjectura minuta, Buvignieria berwaldi, Mahajangina weitschati, Entomope crassilabrum, Paladmete? rasoarinoroae, Tomura ambatolafiensis, Carinathilda parviruga, Carinathilda bandeli, and Gymnothilda pagodoidea.

When the existence of juveniles, eggs, and nesting sites of the hadrosaur Maiasaura peeblesorum and the hypsilophodontid Orodromeus makelai from the Upper Cretaceous Two Medicine Formation of western Montana were reported, they provided powerful insights into the reproductive strategies of these animals (Horner and Makela, 1979; Horner, 1982, 1984; Horner and Weishampel, 1988). Dinosaur eggs had been known since 1923 when nests attributed to the ceratopsian Protoceratops andrewsi were discovered in Mongolia (Brown and Schlaikjer, 1940), but there was no direct information about behavior or survival strategies in hatchling dinosaurs until the Maiasaura and Orodromeus findings. These recent discoveries have generated a number of hypotheses on the reproductive behavior of dinosaurs relating to the extent of parental care, fidelity in nesting sites, and the aggregation of juveniles into groups.

A new Early Cretaceous neosuchian crocodyliform is recognized on the basis of two skulls and postcranial material collected from the late Aptian Twin Mountains Formation at Proctor Lake, central Texas. The new species, Wannchampsus kirpachi, is distinguished by a unique combination of characters including an enlarged third maxillary tooth, internal choanae bordered anteriorly by the palatines and by the pterygoids posteriorly and laterally, anterior margin of the choanae situated at the posterior edge of the suborbital fenestrae, a median crest along the midline of the parietal and frontal, and procoelous vertebrae. A phylogenetic analysis recovered the new taxon as the sister to the ‘Glen Rose form,’ an undescribed taxon of neosuchian. Together, with Shamosuchus, Batrachomimus, and Rugosuchus, they form a monophyletic group, Paralligatoridae, that is the sister clade to Eusuchia within Neosuchia. The Proctor Lake taxon and the undescribed yet widely discussed ‘Glen Rose form’ are referable to the same genus.

Virtual paleontology unites a variety of computational techniques and methods for the visualization and analysis of fossils. Due to their great potential and increasing availability, these methods have become immensely popular in the last decade. However, communicating the wealth of digital information and results produced by the various techniques is still exacerbated by traditional methods of publication. Transferring and processing three-dimensional information, such as interactive models or animations, into scientific publications still poses a challenge. Here, we present different methods and applications to communicate digital data in academia, outreach and education. Three-dimensional PDFs, QR codes, anaglyph stereo imaging, and rapid prototyping—methods routinely used in the engineering, entertainment, or medical industries—are outlined and evaluated for their potential in science publishing and public engagement. Although limitations remain, these are simple, mostly cost-effective, and powerful tools to create novel and innovative resources for education, public engagement, or outreach.

Fossil carnivorans are described from earliest Eocene localities in the Clarks Fork and southern Bighorn basins of Wyoming. Three new species, Miacis rosei, Uintacyon gingerichi, and Vassacyon bowni, collected from the base of the Wasatchian North American Land Mammal Age (Wa-0), are the smallest and possibly most basal members of their respective genera, and increase from one to four the number of miacids known from this faunal zone. An upper dentition of Miacis deutschi from slightly younger (Wa-2) deposits is also described. Previously known only from lower teeth and a single M1, the specimen of M. deutschi includes the left P3-M2, alveoli for the canine, first two premolars and the last molar, as well as most of the maxilla. the new material helps fill gaps in our knowledge of the dental morphology of basal Miacidae and provides insight into the functional differences of the carnassial teeth in the diverging Uintacyon and Miacis lineages. It also provides an opportunity to further assess the hypothesis that climactic warming in the earliest Eocene resulted in evolutionary dwarfing of mammalian species; based on three criteria for identifying dwarfed species at least one of the new taxa, U. gingerichi, is consistent with this hypothesis.

Based on material of the Upper Cambrian of Sweden the internal structure of proto-, para- and euconodonts has been investigated. The protoconodontids Gapparodus and Gumella show some special development of the median unit of the skeletal tissue. In Gapparodus, long, parallel-running lamellae suggest a continuous growth, even of previously secreted lamellae, until their eventual outcropping. In Gumella the fibrous median layer decreases considerably during growth until its complete reduction, which coincides with the disappearance of the posterior wall. Paraconodonts also produced several specialities in their mode of growth. Elements with lateral processes such as Proacodus and Serratocambria developed by allometric growth. The lamellae are much more widely spaced in the process than in the main cusp to attain the required length of the former. In Serratocambria additional lamellae are inserted in the process. Thin sections of tricuspidate westergaardodinids reveal paraconodontid growth with lamellar remains in the tip of the median denticle, which are isolated from the growth lines in the lateral denticles. Based on this observation a hypothetical growth model explains the lamellar development as a result of stress and strain. The Ordovician euconodontid Chosonodina clearly shows white matter and is thus unrelated, but homeomorphic to Westergaardodina. Cambropustula from the lower Upper Cambrian is the oldest euconodont yet but it lacks white matter. The latter was an evolutionary novelty, which progressively developed in the euconodont line.

The systematic position of conodonts is briefly discussed; the studied material cannot contribute to the hypothesis of neural crest derived skeletal tissue.

A new lonchidiid genus, Pristrisodus, from the Upper Triassic Tiki Formation of India is described based on multiple, well-preserved, isolated teeth. Comparative analysis resulted in synonymizing Parvodus tikiensis and Lissodus duffini, which are known from the same horizon and resulted in a new taxon, Pristrisodus tikiensis n. comb. These teeth are elongated with mesiodistal length greater than or equal to twice the labiolingual width and have a high principal cusp, lateral cusplets, a distinct ridge near the crown-root junction labially and higher up on the crown lingually, weak ornamentation, and linear depression along the crown-root junction. Five morphotypes based on overall shape, robustness and crown height are determined. The teeth show a gradual monognathic heterodonty. The anterolateral teeth (morphotypes I−II) have high, pyramidal principal cusp with two or three small but pointed cusplets, and triangular labial and lingual protuberance. The posterolateral teeth (morphotypes III−IV) have four incipient cusplets, relatively low principal cusp, bilobed/rounded, hanging labial and incipient lingual protuberances. Morphotype V comprises anterior teeth that are broad, triangular and robust, and have rounded/blunt principal cusp, one cusplet, and low, hanging labial peg. Multivariate analyses corroborate the qualitative assessment of the Indian hybodonts. Dental histology of Pristrisodus n. gen., shows that it is distinctly different from other lonchidiid genera. The assemblage of freshwater sharks, along with other vertebrate microfossils of the Tiki Formation, shows similarity with that of the lower Tecovas Formation of the Chinle Group, USA. The euryhaline nature resulted in the adaptation of the hybodonts to freshwater systems in India during the Carnian.

The type section of the Basal Silty Member of the Survey Peak Formation spans the Cambrian–Ordovician boundary (North American usage) at Mount Wilson in the southern Canadian Rocky Mountains. The zonal and subzonal terminology through the boundary interval developed in Texas and Oklahoma is applicable to the trilobite faunas recovered from the section. The oldest trilobites recovered in this study occur in the top of the underlying Mistaya Formation and are assigned to the Saukiella serotina Subzone of the Upper Cambrian Saukia Zone. Trilobites and brachiopods of the S. serotina and Eurekia apopsis Subzones of the Saukia Zone occur in the lower half of the Basal Silty Member; trilobites and brachiopods assigned to the Lower Ordovician Missisquoia Zone and the Symphysurina brevispicata Subzone of the Symphysurina Zone occur in the upper half of the Basal Silty Member. The S. brevispicata Subzone extends an unknown distance into the Putty Shale Member of the Survey Peak Formation.

The extinction horizons at the base of the Eurekia apopsis Subzone and at the base of the Missisquoia depressa Subzone (the Cambrian–Ordovician boundary) occur within the Basal Silty Member of the Survey Peak Formation, not at the formational contact with the underlying Mistaya Formation. This leaves hypotheses linking immigration of the replacement trilobite faunas to major lithofacies changes through the boundary interval as untenable. Critical review of the evidence for the extinctions at the end of the Ptychaspid Biomere suggests that they were caused by an invasion of the shelf region by cold, anoxic water.

Forty-seven taxa are illustrated and 18 of those which provide new taxonomic information are discussed. One new genus, Rampartaspis Loch, is described in addition to four new species: Eurekia plectocanthus Loch, Highgatella wilsoni Derby, Macronoda punctata Derby, and Rampartaspis dissimulosulcus Loch. The identifications of trilobites and brachiopods in this paper revise those of Aitken and Norford (1967) and Derby et al. (1972) and result in minor changes in the reported positions of the bases of the Missisquoia and Symphysurina Zones. Revision of the identification of some trilobites in Dean (1989) changes the biostratigraphic interpretation of the Basal Silty Member at Wilcox Pass, Albert, Canada.

A partial skeleton (including both skull and postcranium) and referred dental material attributable to a new species of Oligo-Miocene kangaroo, Nambaroo gillespieae, are described from the Riversleigh World Heritage Area, northwestern Queensland, Australia. The holotype specimen is one of the oldest articulated fossil kangaroo skeletons yet discovered and includes the first postcranial material definitively attributable to the extinct family Balbaridae. Functional-adaptive analysis (including comparisons with modern taxa) of the hindlimb and pedal elements suggests consistent use of quadrupedal progression rather than true hopping. Robust forelimbs and an opposable first pedal digit (lost in most macropodoids) might also indicate limited climbing ability. Cladistic analysis of 104 discrete cranio-dental and postcranial characters coded for 25 ingroup and one outgroup taxon places N. gillespieae in a plesiomorphic sister clade (also containing other Balbarids and the propleopine Ekaltadeta ima) to all other macropodoids. This result supports recent revisions to the classification of kangaroos, which recognize Balbaridae as the most basal macropodoid family-level taxon.

The structure of cranidial shape variation in the early ptychoparioid trilobites Crassifimbra walcotti, Crassifimbra? metalaspis (new combination), and Eokochaspis nodosa is explored using landmark-based geometric morphometric techniques, and is found to be generally similar among the species. Allometry is the strongest single source of cranidial shape variation within each species. The species share several trends in their respective patterns of ontogenetic shape change, but differ in the relative magnitude of these shared trends. Species-specific trends are also present. Each species follows a unique trajectory of ontogenetic shape change. The species exhibit subtle but significant differences in mean cranidial shape even at small size (sagittal length 1.75 mm); the magnitude of interspecific differences becomes larger at larger size (sagittal length 4.2 mm).

For conspecific cranidia of a given size, the major pattern of covariance among anatomical parts is essentially identical to the pattern of covariance among those parts during ontogeny. Developmentally determined covariance patterns among cranidial regions might be responsible for ontogenetic shape change and a portion of non-allometric shape intraspecific variation. Interspecific differences in cranidial shape resulted from complex local modifications to growth pattern and cannot be attributed to simple ontogenetic scaling.

The new collections permit the first description of non-cranidial sclerites of C. walcotti. A cephalic median organ is documented on C. walcotti, representing the oldest known occurrence of this structure in trilobites.
