The air–sea momentum exchanges in the presence of surface waves play an integral role in coupling the atmosphere and the ocean. In the current study, we present a detailed laboratory investigation of the momentum fluxes over wind-generated waves. Experiments were performed in the large wind-wave facility at the Air–Sea Interaction Laboratory of the University of Delaware. Airflow velocity measurements were acquired above wind waves using a combination of particle image velocimetry and laser-induced fluorescence techniques. The momentum budget is examined using a wave-following orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. In the wave boundary layer, the phase-averaged turbulent stress is intense (weak) and positive downwind (upwind) of the crests. The wave-induced stress is also positive on the windward and leeward sides of wave crests but with asymmetric intensities. These regions of positive wave stress are intertwined with regions of negative wave stress just above wave crests and downwind of wave troughs. Likewise, at the interface, the viscous stress exhibits along-wave phase-locked variations with maxima upwind of the wave crests. As a general trend, the mean profiles of the wave-induced stress decrease to a negative minimum from a near-zero value far from the surface and then increase rapidly to a positive value near the interface where the turbulent stress is reduced. Far away from the surface, however, the turbulent stress is nearly equal to the total stress. Very close to the surface, in the viscous sublayer, the wave and turbulent stresses vanish, and therefore the stress is supported by the viscosity.

Transition to turbulence dramatically alters the properties of fluid flows. In most canonical shear flows, the laminar flow is linearly stable and a finite-amplitude perturbation is necessary to trigger transition. Controlling transition to turbulence is achieved via the broadening or narrowing of the basin of attraction of the laminar flow. In this paper, a novel methodology to assess the robustness of the laminar flow and the efficiency of control strategies is introduced. It relies on the statistical sampling of the phase-space neighbourhood around the laminar flow in order to assess the transition probability of perturbations as a function of their energy. This approach is applied to a canonical flow (plane Couette flow) and provides invaluable insight: in the presence of the chosen control, transition is significantly suppressed whereas plausible scalar indicators of the nonlinear stability of the flow, such as the edge-state energy, do not provide conclusive predictions. The methodology presented here in the context of transition to turbulence is applicable to any nonlinear system displaying finite-amplitude instability.

The present work analyses how buoyancy is impacting the topology of diffusion flames established around a horizontal cylindrical burner. The flow conditions are chosen such that the system is subjected to negative and positive buoyant forces. It is proposed in this study to investigate the effect of a modulation of the balance between these buoyant forces on the flame structure by varying the temperature of the ambient atmosphere. More specifically, conditions are sought for establishing a buoyant Tsuji diffusion flame characterized by a very low level of strain rate in its lower part (i.e. below the burner). To understand the fundamental mechanisms controlling the whole flame topology, a model is proposed which assumes steadiness and incompressibility of the flow while retaining buoyancy effects in the momentum balance. The results showed that an increase of the ambient temperature leads to the appearance of a counterflow zone below the burner where the flame is undergoing very low levels of strain rate. The overall flame proves to be shorter than its counterpart observed in the forced convection regime. In addition, it is shown that an order of magnitude analysis is able to recover the sensitivity of the flame behaviour to the Péclet and Froude numbers as well as to the combustion parameters. In a certain range of the ambient-atmosphere temperature, the flow field changes dramatically: for the same boundary conditions, there are two steady-state solutions which depend on the initial conditions, i.e. the system presents a hysteresis.

We perform a numerical study of the heat transfer and flow structure of Rayleigh–Bénard (RB) convection in (in most cases regular) porous media, which are comprised of circular, solid obstacles located on a square lattice. This study is focused on the role of porosity $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$ in the flow properties during the transition process from the traditional RB convection with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}=1$ (so no obstacles included) to Darcy-type porous-media convection with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$ approaching 0. Simulations are carried out in a cell with unity aspect ratio, for Rayleigh number $Ra$ from $10^{5}$ to $10^{10}$ and varying porosities $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$, at a fixed Prandtl number $Pr=4.3$, and we restrict ourselves to the two-dimensional case. For fixed $Ra$, the Nusselt number $Nu$ is found to vary non-monotonically as a function of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$; namely, with decreasing $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$, it first increases, before it decreases for $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$ approaching 0. The non-monotonic behaviour of $Nu(\unicode[STIX]{x1D719})$ originates from two competing effects of the porous structure on the heat transfer. On the one hand, the flow coherence is enhanced in the porous media, which is beneficial for the heat transfer. On the other hand, the convection is slowed down by the enhanced resistance due to the porous structure, leading to heat transfer reduction. For fixed $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$, depending on $Ra$, two different heat transfer regimes are identified, with different effective power-law behaviours of $Nu$ versus $Ra$, namely a steep one for low $Ra$ when viscosity dominates, and the standard classical one for large $Ra$. The scaling crossover occurs when the thermal boundary layer thickness and the pore scale are comparable. The influences of the porous structure on the temperature and velocity fluctuations, convective heat flux and energy dissipation rates are analysed, further demonstrating the competing effects of the porous structure to enhance or reduce the heat transfer.

This study investigates, by means of numerical simulations, extreme mechanical force exerted by a turbulent flow impinging on a bluff body, and examines the relevance of two distinct rare-event algorithms to efficiently sample these events. The drag experienced by a square obstacle placed in a turbulent channel flow (in two dimensions) is taken as a representative case study. Direct sampling shows that extreme fluctuations are closely related to the presence of a strong vortex blocked in the near wake of the obstacle. This vortex is responsible for a significant pressure drop between the forebody and the base of the obstacle, thus yielding a very high value of the drag. Two algorithms are then considered to speed up the sampling of such flow scenarios, namely the adaptive multilevel splitting (AMS) and the Giardina–Kurchan–Tailleur–Lecomte (GKTL) algorithms. The general idea behind these algorithms is to replace a long simulation by a set of much shorter ones, running in parallel, with dynamics that is replicated or pruned, according to some specific rules designed to sample large-amplitude events more frequently. These algorithms have been shown to be relevant for a wide range of problems in statistical physics, computer science, biochemistry. The present study is the first application to a fluid–structure interaction problem. Practical evidence is given that the fast sweeping time of turbulent fluid structures past the obstacle has a strong influence on the efficiency of the rare-event algorithm. While the AMS algorithm does not yield significant run-time savings as compared to direct sampling, the GKTL algorithm appears to be effective in sampling very efficiently extreme fluctuations of the time-averaged drag and estimating related statistics such as return times. Marine-terminating glaciers, such as those along the coastline of Greenland, often release meltwater into the ocean in the form of subglacial discharge plumes. Though these plumes can dramatically alter the mass loss along the front of a glacier, the conditions surrounding their genesis remain poorly constrained. In particular, little is known about the geometry of subglacial outlets and the extent to which seawater may intrude into them. Here, the latter is addressed by exploring the dynamics of an arrested salt wedge – a steady-state, two-layer flow system where salty water partially intrudes a channel carrying fresh water. Building on existing theory, we formulate a model that predicts the length of a non-entraining salt wedge as a function of the Froude number, the slope of the channel and coefficients for interfacial and wall drag. In conjunction, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted to observe a salt wedge within a rectangular channel. For experiments conducted with laminar flow (Reynolds number $Re<800$), good agreement with theoretical predictions are obtained when the drag coefficients are modelled as being inversely proportional to $Re$. However, for fully turbulent flows on geophysical scales, these drag coefficients are expected to asymptote toward finite values. Adopting reasonable drag coefficient estimates for this flow regime, our theoretical model suggests that typical subglacial channels may permit seawater intrusions of the order of several kilometres. While crude, these results indicate that the ocean has a strong tendency to penetrate subglacial channels and potentially undercut the face of marine-terminating glaciers.

Turbulent mixing of passive scalars is studied in the canonical shock–turbulence interaction configuration via shock-capturing direct numerical simulations, varying the shock Mach number ($M=1.28{-}5$), turbulence Mach number ($M_{t}=0.1{-}0.4$), Taylor microscale Reynolds number ($Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}\approx 40,70$) and Schmidt number ($Sc=0.5$, 1, 2). The shock-normal evolution of scalar variance and dissipation transport equations, spectra and probability density functions (PDFs) are examined. Scalar dissipation, its production and destruction increase across the shock with higher $M$, lower $M_{t}$ and lower $Re_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}$. Mixing enhancement for different flow topologies across the shock is studied from changes in the PDFs of velocity gradient tensor invariants and conditional distributions of scalar dissipation. The proportion of the stable-focus-stretching flow topology is the highest among all the topologies in the flow both before and after the shock. Unstable-node/saddle/saddle topology is the most dissipative throughout the flow domain, despite variations across the shock. Preshock and postshock distributions of the alignment between the strain-rate tensor eigenvectors and the scalar gradient, vorticity and the mean streamwise vector conditioned on flow topology are studied. A novel barycentric map representation is introduced for a more direct visualization of the alignments and conditioned scalar dissipation distributions. Interaction with the shock increases alignment of the scalar gradient with the most extensive eigenvector, decreasing it with the most compressive, which is still dominant. The barycentric map of the passive scalar gradient also reveals that, across the shock, the most probable alignment between scalar gradient and strain eigendirections converges towards the alignment that provides the most dissipation. This also leads to an enhancement of scalar dissipation immediately downstream of the shock.

Double emulsion formation in a hierarchical flow-focusing channel is systematically investigated using a free-energy ternary lattice Boltzmann model. A three-dimensional formation regime diagram is constructed based on the capillary numbers of the inner ($Ca_{i}$), middle ($Ca_{m}$) and outer ($Ca_{o}$) phase fluids. The results show that the formation diagram can be classified into periodic two-step region, periodic one-step region, and non-periodic region. By varying $Ca_{i}$ and $Ca_{m}$ in the two-step formation region, different morphologies are obtained, including the regular double emulsions, decussate regimes with one or two alternate empty droplets, and structures with multiple inner droplets contained in the continuous middle phase thread. Bidisperse behaviours are also frequently encountered in the two-step formation region. In the periodic one-step formation region, scaling laws are proposed for the double emulsion size and for the size ratio between the inner droplet and the overall double emulsion. Furthermore, we show that the interfacial tension ratio can greatly change the morphologies of the obtained emulsion droplets, and the channel geometry plays an important role in changing the formation regimes and the double emulsion sizes. In particular, narrowing the side inlets or the distance between the two side inlets promotes the conversion from the two-step formation regime to the one-step formation regime.

The presence and structure of an Orr-like inviscid mechanism are studied in fully developed, large-scale turbulent channel flow. Orr-like ‘bursts’ are defined by the relation between the amplitude and local tilting angle of the wall-normal velocity perturbations, and extracted by means of wavelet-based filters. They span the shear-dominated region of the flow, and their sizes and lifespans are proportional to the distance from the wall in the logarithmic layer, forming a self-similar eddy hierarchy consistent with Townsend’s attached-eddy model. Except for their amplitude, which has to be determined nonlinearly, linearised transient growth represents their evolution reasonably well. Conditional analysis, based on wavelet-filtered and low-pass-filtered velocity fields, reveals that bursts of opposite sign pair side-by-side to form tilted quasi-streamwise rollers, which align along the streaks of the streamwise velocity with the right sign to reinforce them, and that they preferentially cluster along pre-existing streak inhomogeneities. On the other hand, temporal analysis shows that consecutive rollers do not form simultaneously, suggesting that they incrementally trigger each other. This picture is similar to that of the streak-vortex cycle of the buffer layer, and the properties of the bursts suggest that they are different manifestations of the well-known attached $\text{Q}_{2}$–$\text{Q}_{4}$ events of the Reynolds stress.

Numerical simulations were performed to investigate the re-initiation mechanism of a diffracted detonation wave near the critical channel width for a weakly unstable gas. Two scenarios were examined: diffraction of a planar detonation wave and of a cellular detonation wave inside the inlet channel. The results revealed that the critical channel width predicted using a cellular detonation wave is smaller than that predicted using a planar detonation wave. The re-initiation mechanisms are described in detail by tracing massless particles along both the plane of symmetry and the re-initiation path. For planar detonation diffractions, a compression wave is formed in the far field behind the diffracted shock. Re-initiation is closely related to the amplification of this compression wave and its coalescence with the diffracted shock. Depending on the inlet channel width, the strength of the reflected rarefaction wave is responsible for weakening the strength of the compression wave and its coalescence with the diffracted shock, consequently hindering the reaction of particles behind the diffracted shock wave. In cellular cases, the continuous collisions of transverse waves, which generate local explosion sites, sustain detonation wave propagation.

In this paper, we investigate the impingement of a two-dimensional (2-D) vortex pair translating downwards onto a horizontal wall with a wavy surface. A principal purpose is to compare the vortex dynamics with the complementary case of a wavy vortex pair (deformed by the long-wavelength Crow instability) impinging onto a flat surface. The simpler case of a 2-D vortex pair descending onto a flat horizontal ground plane leads to the well known ‘rebound’ effect, wherein the primary vortex pair approaches the wall but subsequently advects vertically upwards, due to the induced velocity of secondary vorticity. In contrast, a wavy vortex pair descending onto a flat plane leads to ‘rebounding’ vorticity in the form of vortex rings. A descending 2-D vortex pair, impinging on a wavy wall, also generates ‘rebounding’ vortex rings. In this case, we observe that the vortex pair interacts first with the ‘hills’ of the wavy wall before the ‘valleys’. The resulting secondary vorticity rolls up into a concentrated vortex tube, ultimately forming a vortex loop along each valley. Each vortex loop pinches off to form a vortex ring, which advects upwards. Surprisingly, these rebounding vortex rings evolve without the strong axial flows fundamental to the wavy vortex case. The present research is relevant to wing tip trailing vortices interacting with a non-uniform ground plane. A non-flat wall is shown to accelerate the decay of the primary vortex pair. Such a passive, ground-based method to diminish the wake vortex hazard close to the ground is consistent with Stephan et al. (J. Aircraft, vol. 50 (4), 2013a, pp. 1250–1260; CEAS Aeronaut. J., vol. 5 (2), 2013b, pp. 109–125).

Prior research has shown that buoyant jets and plumes ‘puff’ at a frequency that depends on the balance of momentum and buoyancy fluxes at the inlet, as parametrized by the Richardson number. Experiments have revealed the existence of scaling relations between the Strouhal number of the puffing and the inlet Richardson number, but geometry-specific relations are required when the characteristic length is taken to be the diameter (for round inlets) or width (for planar inlets). Similar to earlier studies of rectangular buoyant jets and plumes, in the present study we use the hydraulic radius of the inlet as the characteristic length to obtain a single Strouhal–Richardson scaling relation for a variety of inlet geometries over Richardson numbers that span three orders of magnitude. In particular, we use adaptive mesh numerical simulations to compute puffing Strouhal numbers for circular, rectangular (with three different aspect ratios), triangular and annular high-temperature buoyant jets and plumes over a range of Richardson numbers. We then combine these results with prior experimental data for round, planar and rectangular buoyant jets and plumes to propose a new scaling relation that describes puffing Strouhal numbers for various inlet shapes and for hydraulic Richardson numbers spanning over four orders of magnitude. This empirically motivated scaling relation is also shown to be in good agreement with prior results from global linear stability analyses.

The linear stability of the family of flows generated by an acceleration-skewed oscillating planar wall is investigated using Floquet theory. Neutral stability curves and critical conditions for linear instability are determined for an extensive range of acceleration-skewed oscillating flows. Results indicate that acceleration skewness is destabilising and reduces the critical Reynolds number for the onset of linearly unstable behaviour. The structure of the eigenfunctions is discussed and solutions suggest that disturbances grow in the direction of highest acceleration.

We develop a general method for constructing knotted flux tubes with finite thickness, arbitrary shape and tunable twist. The central axis of the knotted tube is specified by a smooth and non-degenerate parametric equation. The helicity of the corresponding solenoidal knotted field can be explicitly decomposed into writhe, normalized total torsion and intrinsic twist. We construct several knotted magnetic flux tubes with various twisting degrees, and investigate the effect of twist on their evolution in resistive magnetohydrodynamic flows using direct numerical simulation. For large twist, the magnetic knot gradually shrinks to a tight stable state, similar to the relaxation process in ideal magnetohydrodynamic flows. For small twist, the knotted flux tube splits at early times, accompanied by a rising magnetic dissipation rate. We elucidate the mechanism of the tube splitting using the phase portrait of the Lorentz force projected onto divergence-free space. For finite twist, the Hopf bifurcation from an unstable spiral point to a limit cycle occurs on the phase plane. In the evolution, field lines inside the limit cycle form invariant tori, whereas they become chaotic outside the limit cycle.

A delayed detached eddy simulation of an overexpanded nozzle flow with shock-induced separation is carried out at a Reynolds number of $1.7\times 10^{7}$, based on nozzle throat diameter and stagnation chamber properties. In this flow, self-sustained shock oscillations induce local unsteady loads on the nozzle wall as well as global off-axis forces. Despite several studies in the last few decades, a clear physical understanding of the factors driving this unsteadiness is still lacking. The geometry under investigation is a subscale truncated ideal contour nozzle, which was experimentally tested at the University of Texas at Austin at a nozzle pressure ratio of 30. Under these conditions, the nozzle operates in a highly overexpanded state and comprises a conical separation shock that merges to form a Mach disk at the nozzle centre. The delayed detached eddy simulation model agrees well with the experimental results in terms of mean and fluctuating wall-pressure statistics. Wall-pressure spectra reveal a large bump at low frequencies associated with an axisymmetric (piston-like) motion of the shock system, followed by a broad and high-amplitude peak at higher frequencies associated with the Mach waves produced by turbulent eddies convecting through the detached shear layer. Moreover, a distinct peak at an intermediate frequency (${\sim}1~\text{kHz}$) persists in the wall-pressure spectra downstream of the separation shock. A Fourier-based analysis performed in both time and space (azimuthal wavenumber) reveals that this intermediate-frequency peak is associated with the $m=1$ (non-symmetric) pressure mode and is thus related to the generation of aerodynamic side loads. It is then shown how the unsteady Mach disk motion is characterized by an intense vortex shedding activity that, together with the vortical structures of the annular shear layer, contributes to the sustainment of an aeroacoustic feedback loop occurring within the nozzle.

Grain-scale discrete element simulations of bidisperse mixtures during bedload transport are used to understand, and model, bedload transport and particle-size segregation in granular media. For an initial distribution of fine particles on top of a coarse granular bed, this paper investigates the gravity driven percolation/segregation of the fine particles down into the quasi-static part of the bed. The segregation is observed to be driven by the inertial number at the bottom of the fine particle layer, and is independent of the number of fine particles. A novel travelling wave solution for the evolving concentration distribution is constructed using the continuum particle-size segregation model of Thornton, Gray & Hogg (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 550, 2006, pp. 1–25) and Gray & Chugunov (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 569, 2006, pp. 365–398). The observed behaviour is shown to be related to a local equilibrium between the influence of the concentration and of the inertial number. The existence of the exact solution relies on the segregation flux and the diffusion coefficient having the same dependency on the inertial number. This functional dependence allows the continuum model to quantitatively reproduce the discrete simulations. These results significantly improve on our understanding of the size segregation dynamics and represent a step forward in the up-scaling process to polydisperse granular flows in the context of turbulent bedload transport.
