In Rayleigh–Bénard convection and Taylor–Couette flow cellular patterns emerge at the onset of instability and persist as large-scale coherent structures in the turbulent regime. Their long-term dynamics has been thoroughly characterised and modelled for the case of turbulent convection, whereas turbulent Taylor rolls have received much less attention. Here we present direct numerical simulations of axisymmetric Taylor–Couette flow in the corotating regime and reveal a transition to spatio–temporal chaos as the system size increases. Beyond this transition, Taylor rolls suddenly undergo erratic drifts evolving on a very slow time scale. We estimate an effective diffusion coefficient for the drift and compare the dynamics with analogous motions in Rayleigh–Bénard convection and Poiseuille flow, suggesting that this spontaneous diffusive displacement of large coherent structures is common among different types of wall-bounded turbulent flows.

Using clean numerical simulation (CNS) in which artificial numerical noise is negligible over a finite, sufficiently long interval of time, we provide evidence, for the first time, that artificial numerical noise in direct numerical simulation (DNS) of turbulence is approximately equivalent to thermal fluctuation and/or stochastic environmental noise. This confers physical significance on the artificial numerical noise of DNS of the Navier–Stokes equations. As a result, DNS on a fine mesh should correspond to turbulence under small internal/external physical disturbance, whereas DNS on a sparse mesh corresponds to turbulent flow under large physical disturbance. The key point is that all of them have physical meanings and so are correct in terms of their deterministic physics, even if their statistics are quite different. This is illustrated herein. Our paper provides a positive viewpoint regarding the presence of artificial numerical noise in DNS.

The helicity is a topological conserved quantity of the Euler equations which imposes significant constraints on the dynamics of vortex lines. In the compressible setting, the conservation law holds only under the assumption that the pressure is barotropic. Let us consider a volume $V$ containing a compressible fluid with density $\rho$, velocity field $\textbf{u}$ and vorticity $\boldsymbol{\omega}$. We show that by introducing a new definition of helicity density $h_{\rho }=(\rho {\boldsymbol {u}})\cdot \mbox {curl}\,(\rho {\boldsymbol {u}})$ the barotropic assumption on the pressure can be removed, although ${\int _{V}} h_{\rho }{\rm d}V$ is no longer conserved. However, we show for the non-barotropic compressible Euler equations that the new helicity density $h_{\rho }$ obeys an entropy-type relation (in the sense of hyperbolic conservation laws) whose flux ${\boldsymbol {J}}_{\rho }$ contains all the pressure terms and whose source involves the potential vorticity $q = \boldsymbol{\omega} \cdot \nabla \rho$. Therefore, the rate of change of ${\int _{V}} h_{\rho }{\rm d}V$ no longer depends on the pressure and is easier to analyse, as it depends only on the potential vorticity and kinetic energy as well as $\mbox {div}\,{\boldsymbol {u}}$. This result also carries over to the inhomogeneous incompressible Euler equations for which the potential vorticity $q$ is a material constant. Therefore, $q$ is bounded by its initial value $q_{0}=q({\boldsymbol {x}},\,0)$, which enables us to define an inverse resolution length scale $\lambda _{H}^{-1}$ whose upper bound is found to be proportional to $\|q_{0}\|_{\infty }^{2/7}$. In a similar manner, we also introduce a new cross-helicity density for the ideal non-barotropic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations.

Parametric oscillations of an interface separating two fluid phases create nonlinear surface waves, called Faraday waves, which organise into simple patterns, such as squares and hexagons, as well as complex structures, such as double hexagonal and superlattice patterns. In this work, we study the influence of surfactant-induced Marangoni stresses on the formation and transition of Faraday-wave patterns. We use a control parameter, $B$, that assesses the relative importance of Marangoni stresses as compared with the surface-wave dynamics. Our results show that the threshold acceleration required to destabilise a surfactant-covered interface through vibration increases with increasing $B$. For a surfactant-free interface, a square-wave pattern is observed. As $B$ is incremented, we report transitions from squares to asymmetric squares, weakly wavy stripes and ultimately to ridges and hills. These hills are a consequence of the bidirectional Marangoni stresses at the neck of the ridges. The mechanisms underlying the pattern transitions and the formation of exotic ridges and hills are discussed.

Turbulent flows over porous substrates are studied via a systematic exploration of the dependence of the flow properties on the substrate parameters, including permeability $K$, grain pitch $L$ and depth $h$. The study uses direct numerical simulations mainly for staggered-cube substrates with $L^+\approx 10$–$50$, $\sqrt {K}/L\approx 0.01$–$0.25$ and depths from $h=O(L)$ to $h\gg L$, ranging from typical impermeable rough surfaces to deep porous substrates. The results indicate that the permeability has significantly greater relevance than the grain size and microscale topology for the properties of the overlying flow, including the mean-flow slip and the shear across the interface, the drag increase relative to smooth-wall flow and the statistics and spectra of the overlying turbulence, whereas the direct effect of grain size is only noticeable near the interface as grain-coherent flow fluctuations. The substrate depth also has a significant effect, with shallower substrates suppressing the effective transpiration at the interface. Based on the direct-simulation results, we propose an empirical ‘equivalent permeability’ $K_{eq}^t$ that incorporates this effect and scales well the overlying turbulence for substrates with different depths, permeabilities, etc. This result suggests that wall normal transpiration driven by pressure fluctuations is the leading contributor to the changes in the drag and the overlying turbulence. Based on this, we propose a conceptual $h^+$–$\sqrt {K^+}$ regime diagram where, for any given substrate topology, turbulence transitions smoothly from that over impermeable rough surfaces with $h=O(L)$ to that over deep porous substrates with $h^+\gtrsim 50$, with the latter limit determined by the typical lengthscale of the overlying pressure fluctuations.

Particle-laden horizontal turbulent pipe flow is studied experimentally in the two-way coupling regime with a focus on delineating the effects of particle-to-fluid density ratio $\rho _{p}/\rho _{f}=1$ and 1.05 on the fluid and particle statistics. Particle volume fraction $\phi _{v}$ up to $1\,\%$ and viscous Stokes numbers ranging from $St^+ \approx 1.2$ to $St^+ \approx 3.8$ are investigated at friction Reynolds number $Re_\tau \approx 195$ using time-resolved two-dimensional particle image and tracking velocimetry. Substantial differences are observed between the statistics of neutrally buoyant (i.e. $\rho _{p}/\rho _{f}=1$) and denser (i.e. $\rho _{p}/\rho _{f}=1.05$) settling particles (with settling velocities 0.12–0.32 times the friction velocity), which, at most instances, show opposing trends compared to unladen pipe flow statistics. Neutrally buoyant particles show a slightly increased overall drag and suppressed turbulent stresses, but elevated particle–fluid interaction drag and results in elongated turbulent structures compared to the unladen flow, whereas $\rho _{p}/\rho _{f}=1.05$ particles exhibit a slight overall drag reduction even with increased radial turbulent stresses, and shorter streamwise structures compared to the unladen flow. These differences are enhanced with increasing $St^+$ and $\phi _v$, and can be attributed to the small but non-negligible settling velocity of denser particles, which also leads to differing statistics in the upper and lower pipe halves.

Rogue waves (RWs) can form on the ocean surface due to the well-known quasi-four-wave resonant interaction or superposition principle. The first is known as the nonlinear focusing mechanism and leads to an increased probability of RWs when unidirectionality and narrowband energy of the wave field are satisfied. This work delves into the dynamics of extreme wave focusing in crossing seas, revealing a distinct type of nonlinear RWs, characterised by a decisive longevity compared with those generated by the dispersive focusing (superposition) mechanism. In fact, through fully nonlinear hydrodynamic numerical simulations, we show that the interactions between two crossing unidirectional wave beams can trigger fully localised and robust development of RWs. These coherent structures, characterised by a typical spectral broadening then spreading in the form of dual bimodality and recurrent wave group focusing, not only defy the weakening expectation of quasi-four-wave resonant interaction in directionally spreading wave fields, but also differ from classical focusing mechanisms already mentioned. This has been determined following a rigorous lifespan-based statistical analysis of extreme wave events in our fully nonlinear simulations. Utilising the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger framework, we also show that such intrinsic focusing dynamics can be captured by weakly nonlinear wave evolution equations. This opens new research avenues for further explorations of these complex and intriguing wave phenomena in hydrodynamics as well as other nonlinear and dispersive multi-wave systems.

Here we evaluate the skin coefficient of friction for steady turbulent radial wall jets across smooth and rough surfaces. Although the Colebrook equation has been used successfully for many decades to evaluate friction factors for flows through smooth and rough pipes, how roughness affects the skin friction coefficient for steady turbulent radial wall jets remains unclear. Here we explore a Colebrook-type equation for skin friction coefficients associated with single-phase turbulent radial wall jets arising from orthogonally impinging circular jets. The fully iterative solution, based on well-established concepts of turbulent wall-bounded flow, is presented along with a power-law approximation and a non-iterative approximation for the friction coefficient derived therefrom. We find the skin coefficient of friction defined on the peak radial velocity to be a function of position over rough but not smooth surfaces in contrast to pipe friction factors that remain independent of axial position. These results follow expected trends, explain prior heterogeneity in power-law expressions for the skin friction coefficient and have significant implications for the industrial use of jets in mixing vessels.

Lift and drag forces on moving intruders in flowing granular materials are of fundamental interest but have not yet been fully characterized. Drag on an intruder in granular shear flow has been studied almost exclusively for the intruder moving across flow streamlines, and the few studies of the lift explore a relatively limited range of parameters. Here, we use discrete element method simulations to measure the lift force, $F_{{L}}$, and the drag force on a spherical intruder in a uniformly sheared bed of smaller spheres for a range of streamwise intruder slip velocities, $u_{{s}}$. The streamwise drag matches the previously characterized Stokes-like cross-flow drag. However, $F_{{L}}$ in granular shear flow acts in the opposite direction to the Saffman lift in a sheared fluid at low $u_{{s}}$, reaches a maximum value and then decreases with increasing $u_{{s}}$, eventually reversing direction. This non-monotonic response holds over a range of flow conditions, and the $F_{{L}}$ versus $u_{{s}}$ data collapse when both quantities are scaled using the particle size, shear rate and overburden pressure. Analogous fluid simulations demonstrate that the flow around the intruder particle is similar in the granular and fluid cases. However, the shear stress on the granular intruder is notably less than that in a fluid shear flow. This difference, combined with a void behind the intruder in granular flow in which the stresses are zero, significantly changes the lift-force-inducing stresses acting on the intruder between the granular and fluid cases.

We conduct direct numerical simulations (DNS) to investigate the attenuation of turbulence in a periodic cube due to the addition of prolate spheroidal solid particles. Even with a dilute volume fraction of $O(10^{-2})$, particles can drastically attenuate the turbulence. Our DNS show that the turbulent kinetic energy reduces more significantly when the particles’ Stokes number is larger, size is smaller or aspect ratio is larger. We can explain these results based on the formula proposed by Oka and Goto (2022 J. Fluid Mech. 949, A45), which relates the turbulence attenuation rate to the energy dissipation rate $\epsilon _p$ around particles. More precisely, under the condition that the volume fraction of particles is fixed, $\epsilon _p$ is larger when the Stokes number and, therefore, the relative velocity between fluid and particles are larger, the particle size is smaller or the aspect ratio is larger. These results also imply that the rotation of the anisotropic particles plays only a limited role in the attenuation of turbulence when the Stokes number of particles is sufficiently large, because the main cause of the attenuation is the relative translational velocity between fluid and particles.

Wind turbines operate in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), where Coriolis effects are present. As wind turbines with larger rotor diameters are deployed, the wake structures that they create in the ABL also increase in length. Contemporary utility-scale wind turbines operate at rotor diameter-based Rossby numbers, the non-dimensional ratio between inertial and Coriolis forces, of $\mathcal {O}(100)$ where Coriolis effects become increasingly relevant. Coriolis forces provide a direct forcing on the wake, but also affect the ABL base flow, which indirectly influences wake evolution. These effects may constructively or destructively interfere because both the magnitude and sign of the direct and indirect Coriolis effects depend on the Rossby number, turbulence and buoyancy effects in the ABL. Using large eddy simulations, we investigate wake evolution over a wide range of Rossby numbers relevant to offshore wind turbines. Through an analysis of the streamwise and lateral momentum budgets, we show that Coriolis effects have a small impact on the wake recovery rate, but Coriolis effects induce significant wake deflections which can be parsed into two regimes. For high Rossby numbers (weak Coriolis forcing), wakes deflect clockwise in the northern hemisphere. By contrast, for low Rossby numbers (strong Coriolis forcing), wakes deflect anti-clockwise. Decreasing the Rossby number results in increasingly anti-clockwise wake deflections. The transition point between clockwise and anti-clockwise deflection depends on the direct Coriolis forcing, pressure gradients and turbulent fluxes in the wake. At a Rossby number of 125, Coriolis deflections are comparable to wake deflections induced by ${\sim} 20^{\circ }$ of yaw misalignment.

As new concepts to protect marine structures from ocean waves, we propose the use of a floating elastic annulus. In this paper, two types of annuli are demonstrated. The first is a ‘wave shield’, which creates a calm free surface within an inner domain of the annulus by preventing wave penetration. The second is a ‘cloak’, which not only creates a calm space within the inner domain but also prevents wave scattering outside the annulus. To evaluate the calmness of the inner domain of the annulus, an inlet wave energy factor is newly defined. The wave shield is designed to minimise the inlet wave energy factor to nearly zero. However, the cloak is designed to minimise both the inlet wave energy factor and scattered-wave energy which evaluates the amount of wave scattering at far-field. Each annulus consists of several horizontal concentric annular plates, and the flexural rigidities of the plates are optimised to minimise objective functions at a target frequency. Numerical simulations demonstrate that both the wave shield and the cloak can create calm free surfaces within their inner domains. In addition, the cloak effectively suppresses the outgoing scattering waves and reduces the resultant wave drift force.

This work reports high-fidelity shock-tube experiments on the convergent Richtmyer–Meshkov (RM) instability at a heavy gas layer. The convergent shock tube is designed based on shock dynamics theory, significantly mitigating interface deceleration and reflected shock. As a result, long-term observation of instability growth up to nonlinear stage, free of interface deceleration and reshock, is achieved. Various types of SF$_6$ layers surrounded by air with controllable thicknesses and shapes, created using a soap film technique, are examined. For thick layers, the evolutions of the outer and inner interfaces are nearly decoupled regardless of the layer shape. The weakly nonlinear model of Wang (Phys. Plasmas,vol. 22, 2015, p. 082702), designed for cylindrical RM instability at a single interface, provides a reasonable prediction of perturbation growth at the inner interface, while slightly underestimating instability growth at the outer interface, as it neglects the effects of rarefaction wave. For thin layers, perturbation growth is fastest at either interface when both interfaces initially possess in-phase perturbations, moderate when only one interface is initially perturbed and slowest when the two interfaces have anti-phase perturbations. This variation in growth rates is due to the fact that the evolution of a thin layer is influenced by both reverberating waves and interface coupling, with each factor being highly sensitive to the layer shape. The original vortex method is extended to address the convergent RM instability by incorporating the influences of unsteady background flow, interface coupling and reverberating waves into the transport of a vortex sheet. This extended vortex method enables accurate prediction of convergent RM instability at a gas layer, covering the full range from early linear to late nonlinear stages.

We perform simulations of a two-fluid–structure interaction problem involving liquid–gas flow past a fully submerged stationary circular cylinder. Interactions between the liquid–gas interface with finite surface tension and flow disturbances arising from the cylinder induce a variety of interfacial phenomena and wake structures. We map different interface regimes in a parameter space defined by the Bond number $Bo \in [100, 5000]$ and the submergence depth $h/D \in [1, 2.5]$ of the cylinder while keeping the Reynolds (Re) and Weber (We) numbers fixed at 150 and 1000, respectively. The emerging interface features are classified into three distinct regimes: interfacial waves generated by Strouhal vortices, the entrainment of multi-scale gas bubbles and the reduced deformation state. In the interfacial wave regime, we demonstrate that the frequency of transverse interface fluctuations at a specific streamwise location is identical to the vortex shedding frequency. Additionally, the wavelength of interfacial waves is determined by the size of vortex pairs consisting of alternating Strouhal vortices. In the gas entrainment regime at $ Bo = 1000$, our bubble-size distributions reveal that the entrained bubbles have sizes ranging from one to two orders of magnitude smaller than the cylinder. These multi-scale bubbles are formed primarily through plunging and surfing breakers at $h/D = 2.5$. In contrast, at $h/D = 1$, smaller bubbles initially emerge from the breakup of a gas finger. Over time, some of these bubbles grow in size through coalescence cascades. The influence of $ Re \in [50, 150]$ and $ We \in [700, 1100]$ on gas entrainment is quantified in terms of mean bubble size and count. Lastly, we demonstrate how the deformability of the liquid–gas interface drives the hydrodynamic lift force acting on the cylinder. The net downward lift materializes only in the gas entrainment and reduced deformation regimes due to the broken symmetry of the front stagnation point. While our study focuses on two-dimensional simulations, we also provide insights into the three-dimensional gas entrainment mechanism for one of the extreme cases at $h/D = 1$.

A point force acting on a Brinkman fluid in confinement is always counterbalanced by the force on the porous medium, the force on the walls and the stress at open boundaries. We discuss the distribution of those forces in different geometries: a long pipe, a medium with a single no-slip planar boundary, a porous sphere with an open boundary and a porous sphere with a no-slip wall. We determine the forces using the Lorentz reciprocal theorem and additionally validate the results with explicit analytical flow solutions. We discuss the relevance of our findings for cellular processes such as cytoplasmic streaming and centrosome positioning.

Understanding the dynamics of flames at small scales opens up opportunities to enhance the performance of small-scale power generation devices, micro-reactors, fire safety devices and numerous other systems that confine combustion to micro/meso scales. The current study investigates the dynamics of laminar premixed methane–air flames in meso-scale channels. A cylindrical quartz tube, functioning as an optically accessible meso-scale combustor, is externally heated by a primary heater to facilitate the auto-ignition of the reactant mixture flowing through the tube. Experiments were conducted over a wide range of Reynolds numbers ($Re$) and equivalence ratios ($\Phi$). Apart from the previously documented observations of unsteady flames with repetitive extinction and ignition (FREI) characteristics, this study identifies an additional unsteady propagating flame (PF) regime. While FREI appeared at stoichiometric and fuel-rich conditions, PFs were observed at the equivalence ratio of $0.8$. Unlike the FREI regime, where the flame extinguishes after a characteristic travel distance, PFs continue to travel till they reach the upstream end of the combustor tube, where they extinguish upon encountering a meshed constriction. These flames are associated with a characteristic heat release rate oscillation that couples with the pressure fluctuations at frequencies close to the natural harmonic of the combustor tube. The study further investigates how variations in the wall temperature profile affect the dynamics of FREI and PF regimes. To achieve this, a secondary heater is introduced at varying distances from the primary heater, effectively imposing distinct bimodal wall heating profiles over the combustor tube. The observations and trends from the study were justified using simplified theoretical arguments based on the estimate of the mean flow temperature of the reactant mixture and a flame propagation model that accounts for wall heat losses. The novel findings from this work provide valuable insights that can significantly impact the design and development of advanced micro/meso-scale combustion systems.

We revisit the model problem of Squires & Brady (Phys. Fluids, vol. 17, 2005, 073101), where a Brownian probe is dragged through a dilute dispersion of Brownian bath particles. In this problem, the microrheology due to excluded-volume interactions is represented by an effective viscosity, with the nonlinearity in the driving force entering via the dependence of the viscosity increment (relative to the viscosity of a pure solvent) upon the deformation of the dispersion microstructure. Our interest is in the limit of large Péclet numbers, $ P{\kern-1pt}e\gg 1$, where the microstructural deformation adopts the form of a boundary layer about the upstream hemisphere of the probe. We show that the boundary-layer solution breaks down at the equator of the probe and identify a transition region about the equator, connecting the layer to a downstream wake. The microstructural deformation in this region is governed by a universal boundary-value problem in a semi-bounded two-dimensional domain. The equatorial region continues downstream as a transition layer, which separates the wake of the probe from the undisturbed ambient; in that layer, the microstructure is governed by a one-dimensional heat-like equation. Accounting for the combined contributions from the respective asymptotic provinces we find the approximation $ ({1}/{2})[1+ (\ln P{\kern-1pt}e + 1.046)/ P{\kern-1pt}e]$ for the ratio of the large-$ P{\kern-1pt}e$ viscosity increment to the corresponding linear-response increment. Our asymptotic approximation is in excellent agreement with the increment predicted by a finite-difference numerical calculation of the microstructure deformation, tailored to the large-$ P{\kern-1pt}e$ topology.

The hydrodynamic analysis of motion of small particles (e.g. proteins) within lipid bilayers appears to be naturally suitable for the framework of two-dimensional Stokes flow. Given the Stokes paradox, the problem in an unbounded domain is ill-posed. In his classical paper, Saffman (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 73, 1976, pp. 593–602) proposed several possible remedies, one of them based upon the finite extent of the membrane. Considering a circular boundary, that regularisation was briefly addressed by Saffman in the isotropic configuration, where the particle is concentrically positioned in the membrane. We investigate here the hydrodynamic problem in bounded membranes for the general case of eccentric particle position and a rectilinear motion in an arbitrary direction. Symmetry arguments provide a representation of the hydrodynamic drag in terms of ‘radial’ and ‘transverse’ coefficients, which depend upon two parameters: the ratio $\lambda$ of particle to membrane radii and the eccentricity $\beta$. Using matched asymptotic expansions we obtain closed-form approximations for these coefficients in the limit where $\lambda$ is small. In the isotropic case ($\beta = 0$) we find that the drag coefficient is $4\pi /(\ln ({1}/{\lambda })- {1})$, contradicting the value $4\pi /(\ln ({1}/{\lambda })- {1}/{2})$ obtained by Saffman. We explain the oversight in Saffman’s argument.

The interaction between acoustic and surface gravity waves is generally neglected in classical water-wave theory due to their distinct propagation speeds. However, nonlinear dynamics can facilitate energy exchange through resonant triad interactions. This study focuses on the resonant triad interaction involving two acoustic modes and a single gravity wave in water of finite and deep depths. Using the method of multiple scales, amplitude equations are derived to describe the spatio-temporal behaviour of the system. Energy transfer efficiency is shown to depend on water depth, with reduced transfer in deeper water and enhanced interaction in shallower regimes. Numerical simulations identify parameter ranges, including resonant gravity wavenumber, initial acoustic amplitude and wave packet width, where the gravity-wave amplitude is either amplified or reduced. These results provide insights into applications such as tsunami mitigation and energy harnessing.

Three-dimensional wake forcing is applied to a profiled blunt trailing edge body from synthetic jet arrays distributed symmetrically on both sides of the body. The effect on the wake is experimentally studied at Reynolds numbers based on body thickness, $d$, of $2500 \leqslant Re_d=u_\infty d/\nu \leqslant 5000$ in the turbulent wake regime. The exits of the synthetic jets are rectangular slots and are oriented spanwise to the cross-flow with a uniform spacing of $2.4d$. The forcing causes spanwise variations in the separated shear layers, leading to the von Kármán vortices tilting and forming coherent streamwise vortex loops. This reorientation of the wake vorticity is associated with the attenuation of the vortex street and drag reduction, consistent with previous studies of spanwise perturbations to wakes. The effect of forcing amplitude on the drag and wake structure is examined. It is found that the mean shedding frequency is constant across the span in all cases, indicating that the forced wake has a periodic organised structure. The greatest drag reduction of approximately 25 % is achieved when the vortical structures emitted by the jets penetrate up the edges of the boundary layers of the body, which occurs at velocity ratios (defined from the mean jet exit velocity during expulsion) of about 3 when $Re_d=2500$ and about 2 when $Re_d=5000$. This study presents evidence that the forcing effectiveness is maximised when the vortex street is most tilted into the streamwise direction.
