Reduced-order models are often sought to efficiently represent key dynamical phenomena present among the broad range of temporal and spatial scales associated with unsteady and turbulent flow problems. Linear ‘input–output’ approaches and resolvent analyses reveal that important information about the most dangerous (most amplified) disturbances and the corresponding fluctuation response can be found with knowledge only of the base flow, or the turbulent mean field. In the work by Padovan et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 900, 2020, A14), an important advance is made with regards to flows which have a periodically time-varying base flow, for example during unsteady vortex shedding from a body. By forming a harmonic resolvent relative to this base flow, limitations associated with the traditional linear resolvent are overcome to determine efficient bases for modelling of limit cycle flows and reveal novel information about key triadic (resonant) interactions.

This paper presents an analytical study of the Riemann problem for dilute granular gas using initial conditions that result in a shock–contact–shock wave structure. The Euler equations for molecular gas were perturbed with small granular energy dissipation, resulting in an approximate analytical solution that is valid for early evolution time. This approximate analytical solution shows good agreement with the numerical solution of the full problem obtained using a shock-capturing scheme. It is shown that the wave structure of the Riemann problem for dilute granular gas follows that of molecular gas. However, the variables in regions between the discontinuities are functions of both space and time. Our solution shows that the ‘density overshoot’ – reported by Reddy & Alam (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 779, 2015, R2) – is not part of the shock layer but a signature of the density variation in the star region between the left and right shocks, with the maximum density occurring at the contact discontinuity.

For steady flows, the Briggs (Electron-Stream Interaction with Plasmas. MIT Press, 1964) method is a well-established approach for classifying disturbances as either convectively or absolutely unstable. Here, the framework of the Briggs method is adapted to temporally periodic flows, with Floquet theory utilised to account for the time periodicity of the Stokes layer. As a consequence of the antiperiodicity of the flow, symmetry constraints are established that are used to describe the pointwise evolution of the disturbance, with the behaviour governed by harmonic and subharmonics modes. On coupling the symmetry constraints with a cusp-map analysis, multiple harmonic and subharmonic cusps are found for each Reynolds number of the flow. Therefore, linear disturbances experience subharmonic growth about fixed spatial locations. Moreover, the growth rate associated with the pointwise development of the disturbance matches the growth rate of the disturbance maximum. Thus, the onset of the Floquet instability (Blennerhassett & Bassom, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 464, 2002, pp. 393–410) coincides with the onset of absolutely unstable behaviour. Stability characteristics are consistent with the spatio-temporal disturbance development of the family-tree structure that has hitherto only been observed numerically via simulations of the linearised Navier–Stokes equations (Thomas et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 752, 2014, pp. 543–571; Ramage et al., Phys. Rev. Fluids, vol. 5, 2020, 103901).

This study theoretically establishes a flow rule for a granular flow down a rough inclined plane, capable of determining granular rheology in the presence of strong non-local effects resulting from grain cooperativity. To describe the non-local rheology, a Landau–Ginzburg model is formulated in terms of the fluidisation parameter represented by the granular inertial number. The exact solutions of the inertial-number field are solved and provide physical insights into the evolution of the internal rheology and the flow arrest process controlled by the flow height. Through asymptotic analysis in the regime dominated by strong non-locality, the exact solutions are further reduced to yield an analytical flow rule for the mean flow velocity. A comparison between the prediction of the flow rule and experimental data from the literature for sand grains determines the underlying rheology law and the relevant rheological parameters. Thus, the proposed flow rule serves as an effective tool for inferring granular rheology from strongly non-local inclined flow data, surpassing the limitations of the classical flow rule deduced from the local rheology framework.

We investigate self-excited vortex-acoustic lock-in in a bluff body combustor. The bluff body not only anchors the flame but also sheds vortices. Mutual interaction between vortex shedding and the combustor acoustic field leads to lock-in. A lower-order model for vortex shedding is coupled to the acoustic equations to obtain a set of discrete dynamical maps, which are then solved numerically. Lock-in is identified when a definite phase relationship between vortex shedding and acoustic field remains unaltered with time. The common frequency during (phase) lock-in is either close to the natural acoustic or vortex shedding frequencies, accordingly termed A- or V-lock-in, respectively. Instability and amplitude suppression occur with most parts of the A- and V-lock-in regions, respectively. Furthermore, we relate the lock-in and pre-lock-in regimes observed in our previous experiments (Singh & Mariappan, Combust. Sci. Technol., 2019, pp. 1–29) to A- and V-lock-in phenomena, respectively. Among the two lock-in phenomena, combustion instability is favoured by $1:1$ A-lock-in, whose boundaries in the parameter space can be obtained from a forced response of the vortex shedding process. Finally, we discuss the bifurcations leading to lock-in.

Wall modelling in large-eddy simulation (LES) is of high importance to allow scale resolving simulations of industrial applications. Numerous models were developed and validated for incompressible flows, including a simple quasi-analytical model based on Reichardt's formula that approximates the law of the wall. In this paper, a scaling is proposed to generalize this wall model to highly compressible flows. First, the results of wall-resolved LES (wrLES) of adiabatic compressible turbulent channel flows at $Re_\tau = 1000$ and at centreline Mach numbers of $M_c= 0.76$ and $1.5$ are presented. Then, three potential scalings of the incompressible wall model are proposed, and their a priori performance is evaluated : (i) the Howarth–Stewartson scaling, (ii) an improved Van Driest scaling and (iii) a new scaling obtained from a blending of those two. The results of wall-modelled LES (wmLES) of compressible channel flows using these three models are compared with the reference wrLES data, showing the superior accuracy of the hybrid scaling. The consistency of the new wall model at low Mach numbers is also verified by comparing the results of a wmLES at $M_c= 0.25$ with those of reference incompressible DNS data at $Re_\tau = 1000$ and $5200$. Finally, the proposed wall model is also applied to a turbulent channel flow at $M_c=1.5$ and $Re_\tau =5200$.

Particle trapping and manipulation have a wide range of applications in biotechnology and engineering. Recently, a flow-based, particle-trapping device called the Stokes trap was developed for trapping and control of small particles in the intersection of multiple branches in a microfluidic channel. This device can also be used to perform rheological experiments to determine the viscoelastic response of an emulsion or suspension. We show that besides these applications, the various flow modes produced by the Stokes trap are able to manipulate drop shapes and induce active mixing inside droplets. To this end, we analyse the dynamics of a droplet in a Stokes trap through boundary-integral simulations. We also explore the dynamic response of drop shape with respect to distinct external flow modes, which allows us to perform numerical experiments such as step strain and oscillatory extension. A linear controller is used to manipulate drop position, and the drop deformation is characterized by a spherical-harmonic decomposition. For small drop deformations, we observe a linear superposition of harmonics, which, surprisingly, seems to hold even for moderate deformations. This result indicates that such a device can be used for shape control of droplets. We also investigate how the different flow modes may be combined to induce mixing inside the droplets. The transient combination of modes produces an effective chaotic mixing, which is characterized by a mixing number. The mixing inside the droplet can be further enhanced for lower viscosity ratios and low, but non-zero capillary number and flow frequencies.

This paper gives, in the limit of infinite Froude number, a closed-form, analytical solution for steady, two-dimensional, irrotational, infinite-depth, free-surface, attached flow over a submerged tandem cascade of hydrofoils for arbitrary angle of attack, depth of submergence and interfoil separation. The multiply connected flow domain is conformally mapped to a concentric annulus in an auxiliary plane. The complex flow potential and its derivative, the complex velocity, are obtained in the auxiliary plane by considering their form at known special points in the flow and the required conformal mapping is determined by explicit integration, allowing accurate evaluation of various flow quantities including the lift on each foil. The circulation around the foils causes the foil array to act as a row of point vortices, or a shear layer, and so, for positive angles of attack, the flow speed at the free surface can substantially exceed the speed at depth, with the speeds simply related through the lift coefficient. Decreasing the interfoil separation decreases the disturbance to the free surface and greatly increases the lift per hydrofoil, thus allowing for the shallower operation of a hydrofoil array than of an isolated foil for a given lift requirement. Further, the flow over a hydrofoil array approaches its infinite depth form significantly more rapidly than that over an isolated foil. In contrast to the infinite-submergence case where a through-array flow can be imposed, in the finite submergence case, periodicity and the presence of the free surface mean that there is no net flow between the foils.

The composition of the Earth's mantle, built by impacts of metallic core planetesimals, depends on the time offered to metal–silicate equilibration (concentration equalization by mixing) as the impactor fragments settle down. Smaller fragments equilibrate while bigger ones remain segregated and accumulate in the – therefore iron rich – Earth's core. To understand the primary instability setting the interpenetration depth and wavelength between the impactor and the mantle, Lherm et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 937, 2022, A20) analyse the intermingled phenomena occurring when a drop impacts a substrate of a pool of another liquid, digging a crater. The density difference between the phases triggers a Rayleigh–Taylor instability when the drop is denser than the pool. The overall planet chemical composition relies on a tradeoff between fragmentation and mixing; this study provides elements to decipher their relative importance.

Direct numerical simulations of spiral Poiseuille flows in a narrow gap geometry are performed with the aim of identifying the mechanisms governing the dynamics of the axial friction coefficient. The investigation has explored a small portion of the Reynolds number–Taylor number phase space ($600 \leq Re \leq 5766$ and $1500 \leq Ta \leq 5000$), for which reference experimental results are available. The study is focused on the mechanism leading to the enhancement of the axial friction coefficient with the Taylor number when the Reynolds number is kept constant. The analysis of the spatial distribution of the Reynolds stress tensor and of the turbulent energy budget has evidenced the key role of the pressure–strain correlation in the energy transfer from the azimuthal to the axial component. The latter eventually determines the increase of the axial friction coefficient through the enhanced radial mixing of axial momentum. Data have also shown that the flow dynamics is heavily dependent on the $Ta/Re$ ratio, and different regimes develop (ranging from laminar to turbulent), each with peculiar behaviours.

When a viscous fluid spreads underneath a deformable surface skin or crust, the peeling dynamics at the fluid front can control the rate of advance rather than bulk self-similar flow. For an elastic skin, this control results in a quasi-static interior blister held at constant pressure that is matched to a narrow peeling region behind the fluid front. In this paper, the analogous problem is considered for a skin that deforms either viscously or plastically, or both. In particular, the deformable surface is assumed to be a thin plate of material governed by the Herschel–Bulkley constitutive law. We examine how such a skin controls viscous flow underneath, fed at constant flux and spreading as either a planar or axisymmetric current. As for an elastic skin, the peeling dynamics at the viscous fluid front again controls the rate of spreading. However, contrary to that situation, the mathematical matching problem for viscoplastic peeling is simplified considerably as a result of an integral constraint. Despite this, the structure of the peeling region is complicated significantly by any plasticity in the skin, which can create a convoluted peeling wave ahead of the main blister that features interwoven yielded and plugged sections of the plate.

Successive drops of coloured ink mixed with surfactant are deposited onto a thin film of water to create marbling patterns in the Japanese art technique of Suminagashi. To understand the physics behind this and other applications where surfactant transports adsorbed passive matter at gas–liquid interfaces, we investigate the Lagrangian trajectories of material particles on the surface of a thin film of a confined viscous liquid under Marangoni-driven spreading by an insoluble surfactant. We study a model problem in which several deposits of exogenous surfactant simultaneously spread on a bounded rectangular surface containing a pre-existing endogenous surfactant. We derive Eulerian and Lagrangian formulations of the equations governing the Marangoni-driven surface flow. Both descriptions show how confinement can induce drift and flow reversal during spreading. The Lagrangian formulation captures trajectories without the need to calculate surfactant concentrations; however, concentrations can still be inferred from the Jacobian of the map from initial to current particle position. We explore a link between thin-film surfactant dynamics and optimal transport theory to find the approximate equilibrium locations of material particles for any given initial condition by solving a Monge–Ampère equation. We find that as the endogenous surfactant concentration $\delta$ vanishes, the equilibrium shapes of deposits using the Monge–Ampère approximation approach polygons with corners curving in a self-similar manner over lengths scaling as $\delta ^{1/2}$. We explore how Suminagashi patterns may be produced by using computationally efficient successive solutions of the Monge–Ampère equation.

We study the term in the eddy energy budget of continuously stratified quasigeostrophic turbulence that is responsible for energy extraction by eddies from the background mean flow. This term is a quadratic form, and we derive Euler–Lagrange equations describing its eigenfunctions and eigenvalues, the former being orthogonal in the energy inner product and the latter being real. The eigenvalues correspond to the instantaneous energy growth rate of the associated eigenfunction. We find analytical solutions in the Eady problem. We formulate a spectral method for computing eigenfunctions and eigenvalues, and compute solutions in Phillips-type and Charney-type problems. In all problems, instantaneous growth is possible at all horizontal scales in both inviscid problems and in problems with linear Ekman friction. We conjecture that transient growth at small scales is matched by linear transfer to decaying modes with the same horizontal structure, and we provide simulations supporting the plausibility of this hypothesis. In Charney-type problems, where the linear problem has exponentially growing modes at small scales, we expect net energy extraction from the mean flow to be unavoidable, with an associated nonlinear transfer of energy to dissipation.

We present an experimental study on the drag reduction by polymers in Taylor–Couette turbulence at Reynolds numbers ($Re$) ranging from $4\times 10^3$ to $2.5\times 10^4$. In this $Re$ regime, the Taylor vortex is present and accounts for more than 50 % of the total angular velocity flux. Polyacrylamide polymers with two different average molecular weights are used. It is found that the drag reduction rate increases with polymer concentration and approaches the maximum drag reduction (MDR) limit. At MDR, the friction factor follows the $-0.58$ scaling, i.e. $C_f \sim Re^{-0.58}$, similar to channel/pipe flows. However, the drag reduction rate is about $20\,\%$ at MDR, which is much lower than that in channel/pipe flows at comparable $Re$. We also find that the Reynolds shear stress does not vanish and the slope of the mean azimuthal velocity profile in the logarithmic layer remains unchanged at MDR. These behaviours are reminiscent of the low drag reduction regime reported in channel flow (Warholic et al., Exp. Fluids, vol. 27, no. 5, 1999, pp. 461–472). We reveal that the lower drag reduction rate originates from the fact that polymers strongly suppress the turbulent flow while only slightly weaken the mean Taylor vortex. We further show that polymers steady the velocity boundary layer and suppress the small-scale Görtler vortices in the near-wall region. The former effect reduces the emission rate of both intense fast and slow plumes detached from the boundary layer, resulting in less flux transport from the inner cylinder to the outer one and reduces energy input into the bulk turbulent flow. Our results suggest that in turbulent flows, where secondary flow structures are statistically persistent and dominate the global transport properties of the system, the drag reduction efficiency of polymer additives is significantly diminished.

Predicting the magnitude of the slip velocity of non-tracer particles with respect to the surrounding fluid is crucial to address both fundamental and practical questions involving dispersed turbulent flows. Here we derive an analytical model to predict the slip velocity of spherical particles in homogeneous isotropic turbulence. We modulate the particle equation of motion according to the inertial filtering framework, and obtain closed-form expressions for the mean slip velocity magnitude as a function of the governing parameters. These are compared against laboratory measurements and direct numerical simulations, demonstrating close agreement for both light and heavy particles, both smaller and larger than the Kolmogorov scales. The predictive value of the model and its implications are discussed, as well as the range of validity of the underlying assumptions.

Wind tunnel measurements of the incident turbulent velocity fields and axial forces on a horizontal axis turbine and porous disc analogues are reported. The models were tested in both a simulated atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and in grid turbulence, allowing for a range of turbulence length scale to rotor diameter ratios to be considered. A theoretical framework to account for the combined effect of distortion and potential flow blocking in the induction zone is presented. In the case of very large length-scale turbulence to diameter ratios, where distortion effects are minimal, a quasi-steady approach is adopted for the effect of blocking. For the small length-scale ratio limit, the method is developed from the classical analyses for rapid distortion of turbulence and blockage from flow through a porous sheet of resistance. For general length-scale ratios, an efficient prediction method based on interpolation between the two length-scale ratio extremes is established. For very large length-scale ratios, a quasi-steady theory without distortion is appropriate for a rotor or disc in a simulated ABL. The small length-scale theory is applicable for tests conducted in grid turbulence. The results of the study can inform the prediction and interpretation of typical measurements of turbulence within the induction zone and the fluctuating loads on a rotor, at both prototype and full scale. This is of particular importance to fatigue load assessments.
