We discuss the limit behavior of the partial sums process of stationary solutions to the (autoregressive) AR(1) equation Xt = atXt−1 + εt with random (renewal-reward) coefficient, at, taking independent, identically distributed values Aj ∈ [0,1] on consecutive intervals of a stationary renewal process with heavy-tailed interrenewal distribution, and independent, identically distributed innovations, εt, belonging to the domain of attraction of an α-stable law (0 < α ≤ 2, α ≠ 1). Under suitable conditions on the tail parameter of the interrenewal distribution and the singularity parameter of the distribution of Aj near the unit root a = 1, we show that the partial sums process of Xt converges to a λ-stable Lévy process with index λ < α. The paper extends the result of Leipus and Surgailis (2003) from the case of finite-variance Xt to that of infinite-variance Xt.

A recent result of Ding, Lee and Peres (2012) expressed the cover time of the random walk on a graph in terms of generic chaining for the commute distance. Their argument is based on Dynkin's isomorphism theorem. The purpose of this article is to present an alternative approach to this problem, based only on elementary hitting time estimates and chaining arguments.

In this paper we discuss the decay properties of Markov branching processes with disasters, including the decay parameter, invariant measures, and quasistationary distributions. After showing that the corresponding q-matrix Q is always regular and, thus, that the Feller minimal Q-process is honest, we obtain the exact value of the decay parameter λC. We show that the decay parameter can be easily expressed explicitly. We further show that the Markov branching process with disaster is always λC-positive. The invariant vectors, the invariant measures, and the quasidistributions are given explicitly.

We consider possibly nonlinear distributional fixed-point equations on weighted branching trees, which include the well-known linear branching recursion. In Jelenković and Olvera-Cravioto (2012), an implicit renewal theorem was developed that enables the characterization of the power-tail asymptotics of the solutions to many equations that fall into this category. In this paper we complement the analysis in our 2012 paper to provide the corresponding rate of convergence.

Stationary Poisson processes of lines in the plane are studied, whose directional distributions are concentrated on $k\geq 3$ equally spread directions. The random lines of such processes decompose the plane into a collection of random polygons, which form a so-called Poisson line tessellation. The focus of this paper is to determine the proportion of triangles in such tessellations, or equivalently, the probability that the typical cell is a triangle. As a by-product, a new deviation of Miles’s classical result for the isotropic case is obtained by an approximation argument.

Consider a Brownian motion on the circumference of the unit circle, which jumps to the opposite point of the circumference at incident times of an independent Poisson process of rate $\lambda$. We examine the problem of coupling two copies of this ‘jumpy Brownian motion’ started from different locations, so as to optimise certain functions of the coupling time. We describe two intuitive co-adapted couplings (‘Mirror’ and ‘Synchronous’) which differ only when the two processes are directly opposite one another, and show that the question of which strategy is best depends upon the jump rate $\lambda$ in a non-trivial way. We also provide an explicit description of a (non-co-adapted) maximal coupling for any jump rate in the case that the two jumpy Brownian motions begin at antipodal points of the circle.

The risk processes considered in this paper are generated by an underlying Markov process with a regenerative structure and an independent sequence of independent and identically distributed claims. Between the arrivals of claims the process increases at a rate which is a nonnegative function of the present value of the Markov process. The intensity for a claim to occur is another nonnegative function of the value of the Markov process. The claim arrival times are the regeneration times for the Markov process. Two-sided claims are allowed, but the distribution of the positive claims is assumed to have a Laplace transform that is a rational function. The main results describe the joint Laplace transform of the time at ruin and the deficit at ruin. The method used consists in finding partial eigenfunctions for the generator of the joint process consisting of the Markov process and the accumulated claims process, a joint process which is also Markov. These partial eigenfunctions are then used to find a martingale that directly leads to an expression for the desired Laplace transform. In the final section, three examples are given involving different types of the underlying Markov process.

Under certain assumptions on the dependence structure of the residual lives of the insured (i.e. their independence, positive association, or negative association), in this paper we establish some laws of large numbers for the convex upper bounds, derived by the technique of comonotonicity, of the present value function of a homogeneous portfolio composed of the whole-life insurance policies.
