The effects of synchronizing dietary energy and nitrogen supply in diets with a similar carbohydrate composition on microbial protein synthesis and rumen fermentation were examined in sheep. Two diets were formulated to be either synchronous (diet S) or asynchronous (diet A) for the hourly release of nitrogen (N) and energy to the rumen. Diet S contained (g/kg) 425 g wheat straw, 400 g winter barley, 150 grapeseed meal and 25 g minerals/vitamins and diet A contained 505 g wheat straw, 458.5 g winter barley, 11·5 g urea and 25 g minerals/vitamins. Both diets were fed at the rate of 1 kg/day in four equal portions, to four cannulated sheep, in two periods in a change-over design. Rumen ammonia concentrations followed the predicted hourly trend in N degradation with a peak 1 h after feeding of 10 mM for diet S and 16 mM for diet A before falling within 3 h of feeding to 4 ITIM in animals fed either diet. Rumen volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentrations followed the cyclical trend predicted by stoichiometric equations, whilst rumen VFA ratios were more stable than predicted in animals fed either diet. The observed content of rumen degradable protein and organic matter truly degraded in the rumen was similar for both diets. The increase in total CHO digested in the rumen observed with diet A (427 g/kg DM) compared with diet S (364 g/kg DM) can be attributed to the greater content of starch in the asynchronous diet, which had a high degradability. The efficiency of microbial protein synthesis (g N/kg OM truly degraded in the rumen) was 11–20% greater in animals fed the synchronous diet (S) than the asynchronous diet (A). It is concluded that microbial N production was more efficient when dietary energy and N supply were synchronized.

The results of 80 calorimetric experiments with sheep and cattle, mostly conducted in Scotland, were analysed using a generalization of the Mitscherlich equation R = B(l–exp(–pG))–l, where R is daily energy retention and G daily gross energy intake, both scaled by dividing by the fasting metabolism. The relations between gross energy and metabolizable energy were also examined. Methods of fitting the Mitscherlich equation and the errors associated with it are presented.

It is shown that the gross energy of the organic matter of feed can be estimated from proximate principles with an error of ±2·3% (coefficient of variation) and that provided different classes of feed are distinguished, the metabolizable energy of organic matter can be estimated from gross energy and crude fibre content with an error of ±6·9%. Parameters of the primary equation made with cattle agreed with those made with sheep and there was no evidence of non-proportionality of responses on substitution of feeds in mixtures.

The efficiency of utilization of gross energy for maintenance and for body gain of energy was related to the metabolizability of gross energy and, in addition, to fibre or to protein content. Prediction equations are presented which describe these relationships.

It is shown that the primary equation can be manipulated to express a number of biological concepts and that its two parameters B and p can be simply derived from estimates of the two efficiency terms for maintenance and production.

The results are discussed in relation to the design of feeding systems for ruminant animals and to the derivation of optima in their feeding.

Global changes including increases in temperature, atmospheric greenhouse gases, soil degradation and competition for land and water resources, will have multiple impacts on rice production systems in Africa. These changes will affect weed communities, and management approaches must be adapted to take this into account. Higher temperatures and limited water availability will generally advantage C4 over C3 plants (e.g. rice). Conversely, elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) levels will improve the competitiveness of rice relative to C4 weeds, which comprise many of the problem weeds of rice. Increased atmospheric CO2 levels may also improve tolerance of rice against parasitic weeds, while prevalence of parasitic species may be amplified by soil degradation and more frequent droughts or floods. Elevated CO2 levels tend to promote growth below-ground relative to above-ground, particularly in perennial (C3) species. This may render mechanical control of weeds within a cropping season less effective or even counterproductive. Increased CO2 levels, rainfall and temperature may also reduce the effectiveness of chemical control, while the implementation of adaptation technologies, such as water-saving irrigation regimes, will have negative consequences for rice–weed competition. Rain-fed production systems are prevalent throughout Africa and these are likely to be most vulnerable to direct effects of climate change (e.g. higher temperatures and changes in rainfall patterns). Effective weed management strategies in these environments could encompass off-season tillage, the use of well-adapted cultivars (i.e. those with drought and heat tolerance, high weed competitiveness and parasitic weed resistance or tolerance) and rotations, intercropping or short, off-season fallows with weed-suppressive legumes including those that suppress parasitic weeds. In irrigated, non-flooded rice systems, weeds are expected to become more serious. Specifically, perennial rhizomatous C3 weeds and species adapted to hydromorphic conditions are expected to increase in prevalence. By implementing an integrated weed management strategy primarily targeted at weed prevention, dependency on flood water, herbicides and mechanical control can be lessened. Off-season deep tillage, stale seed bed techniques, use of clean seeds and irrigation water, competitive cultivars, timely transplanting at optimum spacing and judicious fertilizer timings are suitable candidate components for such a strategy. Integrated, novel approaches must be developed to assist farmers in coping with the challenges of weed control in the future.

Twenty cultivars of P. vulgaris differing in growth habit, and inoculated with an efficient strain of R. phaseoli, were sampled weekly in the period 22—99 days after planting. Acetylene reduction and specific nodule activity were similar to or better than those reported for other grain legumes, and were higher than achieved by a soya-bean cultivar. Though the period of active fixation was limited, nitrogen gains estimated at 25—30 kg/ha/growing cycle were obtained. Climbing beans were superior to bush beans in acetylene reduction and specific nodule activity, but differed little in nodule development. Two varieties, Cargamanto and Sangretoro, were outstanding in fixation. Differences between varieties in nodule to root ratio, and in rate of N accumulation in the leaves were shown. Both groups of plants stored appreciable starch in the stem after flowering. The results are related to the need for N fertilization in Latin America.

Successful crop production depends initially on the availability of high-quality seed. By 2050 global climate change will have influenced crop yields, but will these changes affect seed quality? The present review examines the effects of elevated carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature during seed production on three seed quality components: seed mass, germination and seed vigour.

In response to elevated CO2, seed mass has been reported to both increase and decrease in C3 plants, but not change in C4 plants. Increases are greater in legumes than non-legumes, and there is considerable variation among species. Seed mass increases may result in a decrease of seed nitrogen (N) concentration in non-legumes. Increasing temperature may decrease seed mass because of an accelerated growth rate and reduced seed filling duration, but lower seed mass does not necessarily reduce seed germination or vigour.

Like seed mass, reported seed germination responses to elevated CO2 have been variable. The reported changes in seed C/N ratio can decrease seed protein content which may eventually lead to reduced viability. Conversely, increased ethylene production may stimulate germination in some species. High-temperature stress before developing seeds reach physiological maturity (PM) can reduce germination by inhibiting the ability of the plant to supply the assimilates necessary to synthesize the storage compounds required for germination.

Nothing is known concerning the effects of elevated CO2 on seed vigour. However, seed vigour can be reduced by high-temperature stress both before and after PM. High temperatures induce or increase the physiological deterioration of seeds. Limited evidence suggests that only short periods of high-temperature stress at critical seed development stages are required to reduce seed vigour, but further research is required.

The predicted environmental changes will lead to losses of seed quality, particularly for seed vigour and possibly germination. The seed industry will need to consider management changes to minimize the risk of this occurring.

In three experiments, carried out in 1985 and 1986 in the Netherlands, the effects of herbage maturation and rate of nitrogen fertilization on rumen degradability of organic matter (OM) and crude protein (CP) in fresh herbage (Lolium perenne) were studied using the nylon bag technique. Experimental farms at Lelystad and Swifterbant (clay soil) and Achterberg (sandy soil) provided the herbage samples. From the results, the content of digestible CP entering the small intestine (DPI) was estimated.

Crude protein content and in sacco degradability of OM and CP decreased with increasing grass maturity and with decreasing rate of N application. With every 100 g/kg DM decrease in CP content, the estimated content of DPI decreased by 19 g/kg DM, no matter how the CP content was manipulated.

Components of the N cycle were studied at Hurley, UK, in 1985–87. In grass-clover (Lolium perenne and Trifolium repens) swards, grazed at three intensities, low total inputs of N were associated with low outputs and losses of N. Nevertheless, the flows (intake and excretion) of N through animals were substantial and gave rise, at the higher intensities of grazing, to an acceptably high agricultural output per hectare. This was considered evidence of a fast and efficient recycling of N between plants, animals and soil. The release of N to the environment (as nitrogenous gases and nitrate) was substantially less from the grass–clover swards than from a grass sward fertilized with 420 kg N/ha, and this was at the expense of only 20% loss in production. The mechanisms which might account for the high efficiency of utilization and recycling of N in grass–clover swards are discussed in the context of the balance of the supply of C and N to plant and soil biomasses under grazing. The results confirm that optimizing agricultural output in grass–clover swards has little adverse effect on the environment, but the importance to this end of sustaining a large proportion of N-deficient grass in grass-clover swards is emphasized.

1. Four cuts of rye.grass S 23, three cuts each of cocksfoot S 37 and timothy S 48 and two cuts of rye-grass S 24 taken at different stages of growth and artificially (heat) dried were fed to mature sheep in a series of experiments designed to measure their value as sources of energy. The four cuts of rye-grass S 23 were each given to three sheep–two of the animals receiving it at five different levels of intake and the third at two levels. The other grasses were each given to four sheep at two levels of intake. The fasting heat productions of the sheep were measured at the beginning and end of the grass feeding periods. Altogether 152 experiments were made.

A 5-year study was conducted from 1988 to 1992 at three sites in Niger to determine the effects of crop rotation of a cereal and legumes and nitrogen fertilizer on chemical properties of the soil (0–20 cm) and yield of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R.BR.), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.), and groundnut (Arachis hypogea L.). Four N levels and rotation treatments including continuous fallow were investigated. Soil samples taken from the top 20 cm depth at the end of the experiment from treatments without nitrogen application which included continuous fallow, fallow–millet rotation, groundnut–millet rotation, cowpea–millet rotation, and continuous millet were analysed for soil pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen and exchangeable bases. Fertilizer N significantly increased yield of pearl millet, cowpea and groundnut. Continuous monocropping of pearl millet resulted in lower yields across N levels compared to legume–millet rotations. Legume yields were also consistently lower in monoculture than when rotated with millet. There was a decline in organic matter under continuous millet, cowpea–millet rotation and groundnut–millet rotation. The fallow–millet rotation supplied more mineral N than the legume–millet rotations. Nitrogen availability was greater in cowpea–millet rotation than continuous millet. Crop rotation was more productive than the continuous monoculture but did not differ in maintaining soil organic matter. The legume–millet rotation at 30 kg/ha N appears to be the most viable for millet production. Research should focus on understanding the effect of legume/cereal intercrops and rotations on soil productivity.

1. Ruminal ammonia concentrations were measured in sheep receiving basal diets of hay and meals with various supplementary sources of protein. Ammonia production from groundnut meal was great and from maize products slight. Herring meal behaved in an intermediate way.

2. The extent of ammonia production from a given amount of protein-rich material was decreased when the amount of starch or cereal meal fed at the same time was increased.

Wheat yield and grain nitrogen concentration (GNC; mg N/g grain) are frequently negatively correlated. In most growing conditions, this is mainly due to a feedback process between GNC and the number of grains/m2. In Mediterranean conditions, breeders may have produced cultivars with conservative grain set. The present study aimed at clarifying the main physiological determinants of grain nitrogen accumulation (GNA) in Mediterranean wheat and to analyse how breeding has affected them. Five field experiments were carried out in north-eastern Spain in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 growing seasons with three cultivars released at different times and an advanced line. Depending on the experiment, source-sink ratios during grain filling were altered by reducing grain number/m2 either through pre-anthesis shading (unshaded control or 0·75 shading only between jointing and anthesis) or by directly trimming the spikes after anthesis and before the onset of the effective grain filling period (un-trimmed control or spikes halved 7–10 days after anthesis). Grain nitrogen content (GN content; mg N/grain) decreased with the year of release of the genotypes. As the number of grains/m2 was also increased by breeding there was a clear dilution effect on the amount of nitrogen allocated to each grain. However, the increase in GN content in old genotypes did not compensate for the loss in grain nitrogen yield (GNY) due to the lower number of grains/m2. GN content of all genotypes increased (increases ranged from 0·13 to 0·40 mg N/grain, depending on experiment and genotype) in response to the post-anthesis spike trimming or pre-anthesis shading. The degree of source-limitation for GNA increased with the year of release of the genotypes (and thus with increases in grain number/m2) from 0·22 (mean of the four manipulative experiments) in the oldest cultivar to 0·51 (mean of the four manipulative experiments) in the most modern line. It was found that final GN content depended strongly on the source-sink ratio established at anthesis between the number of grains set and the amount of nitrogen absorbed at this stage. Thus, Mediterranean wheat breeding that improved yield through increases in grain number/m2 reduced the GN content by diluting a rather limited source of nitrogen into more grains. This dilution effect produced by breeding was further confirmed by the reversal effect produced by grain number/m2 reductions due to either pre-anthesis shading or post-anthesis spike trimming.

Apparatus for measuring the rate of diffusion of carbon dioxide through granular solids is described and the results obtained with it are shown to conform to the curve connecting D/D0 and S previously obtained for carbon disulphide and acetone. The equation D/D0 = 0·66S, which it is suggested should replace Buckingham's equation D/D0=S2, is applied to a discussion of soil aeration, and it is shown that at all porosities the rate of diffusion of carbon dioxide from the soil is sufficient to account for normal respiration without invoking the assistance of meteorological changes. A further application of the equation to water vapour movement in soils is briefly discussed.

This research was conducted to determine the effects of applying N-fertilizer to standard and semidwarf spring wheat varieties on the components of grain yield, and especially on the ability of tillers to develop and produce ears under semiarid conditions. For two growing seasons at Mandan, North Dakota, tillers were identified and tagged according to the leaf axil from which they originated. The survival and development of these tillers, identified as M, T1, T2, and T3 for main stem and tillers from axils of first, second and third true leaves respectively, were observed and measured from emergence to maturity. N-fertilizer was applied at 0, 50 and 270 kg N/ha annually, representing deficient, adequate and excessive N supply.

N-fertilizer application increased grain yield of both varieties, with the increase between 50 and 270 kg N/ha being significant for the standard variety only. Most of this response to N resulted from an increase in the number of ears/ha, arising from reduced mortality of tillers, particularly T2 and T3 tillers during the latter part of the season when water was limited. For a given variety, grain production by M and by T1 tillers was seldom affected by N treatment. Although data were analysed by several means, all results indicate that improved N nutrition enables the later-developing tillers to survive and produce ears more competitively. Final grain yield was closely correlated with N content of a given tiller at the tillering stage, and to dry weight of individual tillers at both tillering and heading. Order of tiller had no appreciable effect on N content of grain. The proportion of final grain yield originating from M decreased from about 60% without N to about 36% for 270 kg N/ha, primarily because of increased survival and production from T2 and T3 tillers following the application of N-fertilizer.

1. Fifteen calorimetric experiments were made with three sheep which had fleeces varying in thickness from 2·5 to 12 cm. All sheep received a constant ration, which corresponded in amount and kind to that given to closely clipped sheep in previous experiments (Graham et al. 1958).

2. The metabolizable energy of the food increased with increasing environmental temperature by 2–3 Cal./24 hr./° C.

3. Heat production remained constant throughout the range of 15–35° C. environmental temperature. Above 35° C. an increase occurred. At 11° C. a slight rise in heat production occurred in the sheep with a 2·5 cm. fleece. These results show that sheep with fleeces, in contrast to closely clipped sheep, have very wide thermoneutral zones.

4. Heat losses by vaporization of water converged to an identical value irrespective of fleece length at 40° C. The rate of increase of vaporization with environmental temperature at lower temperatures decreased as the fleece length increased.

5. Respiratory frequencies for given total watervapour losses were the same whether or not the sheep had a fleece.

The mammary gland is controlled at two levels in the body. The genetically controlled pattern of parental investment during lactation is modified by nutritional status and signalled to the mammary gland by the endocrine system (see Peaker 1989). The response to this strategic control of the rate of milk secretion is modulated by a tactical control mechanism operating within each mammary gland. The local intramammary mechanism responds to changes in the frequency or completeness of milk removal and acts to match the rate of milk secretion to the rate of milk removal by the young or, in dairy animals, by the milker. It is the local control of milk secretion by milk removal which has been uncovered in recent years, following the realization of the physiological significance of unilateral effects of frequent milking in goats (Linzell & Peaker 1971) and cows (Morag 1973) that is the subject of this brief review.

The use of soil water by six grasses (perennial ryegrass, cocksfoot, timothy, rough stalked meadow grass (RSMG), tall fescue and Italian ryegrass) was measured over 2 years. The swards were cut either at 3-week (C3) or 6-week (C6) intervals. In both years the maximum soil water deficit attained under C6 was greater than under C3. Following several of the cuts from C6 there was a marked, although temporary, reduction in the rate of water uptake.

An extended dry period in the second harvest year revealed substantial differences in the total water used and in the patterns of uptake from the soil profile by the grasses. Effective depths of utilization of water under treatment C6 were: RSMG, 40 cm; timothy, 70 cm; cocksfoot, 70 cm; perennial ryegrass, 80 cm; tall fescue > 100 cm. This order of depth of utilization corresponded with the order of yields obtained during drought conditions. An examination of the root systems of four grasses also showed that, particularly under treatment C6, roots of tall fescue were more numerous at depth than those of timothy, cocksfoot or perennial ryegrass, and under this treatment it showed its greatest tolerance to dry conditions. Drought tolerance in these grasses appears largely determined by the volume of soil exploited by the roots for water.

The present study investigates regional climate change impacts on agricultural crop production in Central and Eastern Europe, including local case studies with different focuses in Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The area studied experiences a continental European climate and is characterized by strong climatic gradients, which may foster regional differences or trends in the impacts of climate change on agriculture. To study the regional aspects and variabilities of climate change impacts on agriculture, the effect of climate change on selected future agroclimatic conditions, crop yield and variability (including the effect of higher ambient CO2 concentrations) and the most important yield limiting factors, such as water availability, nitrogen balance and the infestation risks posed by selected pests were studied. In general, the results predicted significant agroclimatic changes over the entire area during the 21st century, affecting agricultural crop production through various pathways. Simulated crop yield trends confirmed past regional studies but also revealed that yield-limiting factors may change from region to region. For example, pest pressures, as demonstrated by examining two pests, are likely to increase due to warmer conditions. In general, higher potentials for cereal yield increase are seen for wetter and cooler regions (i.e. uplands) than for the drier and warmer lowlands, where yield potentials will be increasingly limited by decreasing crop water availability and heat under most scenarios. In addition, yield variability will increase during the coming decades, but this may decrease towards the end of the 21st century. The present study contributes to the interpretation of previously conducted climate change impact and adaptation studies for agriculture and may prove useful in proposing future research in this field.

Volumetric soil water content and soil water potential were measured beneath a winter wheat crop during the 1975 growing season. Almost no rain fell between mid-May and mid-July and the soil dried continuously until the potential was less than – 20 bars to a depth of 80 cm. Evaporation was separated from drainage by denning an ‘effective rooting depth’ at which the hydraulic gradient was zero.

Rates of water uptake per unit length of root (inflow) were calculated for the whole soil profile and for individual soil layers. Generally, inflow decreased throughout the period of measurement from a maximum of 2·5 × 10–3 to a minimum of 0·66 × 10–3 ml water/cm root/day. Values in individual layers were frequently higher than the mean inflow and the importance of a few deep roots in taking up water during a dry season is emphasized. A similar correlation between inflow and soil water potential was found to apply for the 0–30 cm and 30–60 cm layers during the period of continual soil drying. This relationship represents the maximum inflow measured at a given soil water potential; actual inflow at any particular time depends upon the interrelationship of atmospheric demand, soil water potential and the distribution of root length in the soil.

15N-labelled fertilizer was applied in spring to winter wheat, winter oilseed rape, potatoes, sugarbeet and spring beans in field experiments done in 1987 and 1988 in SE England on four contrasting soil types – a silty clay loam, a chalky loam, a sandy loam and a heavy clay. The 15N-labelled fertilizers were applied at recommended rates; for oilseed rape, a two-thirds rate was also tested. Whole-crop recoveries of labelled nitrogen averaged 52% for winter wheat, 45% for oilseed rape, 61% for potatoes and 61% for sugarbeet. Spring beans, which received only 2·5 kg ha−1 of labelled N, recovered 26%. Removals of 15N-labelled fertilizer N in the harvested products were rather less, averaging 32, 25, 49, 27 and 13% in wheat grain, rape seed, potato tubers, beet root and bean grain, respectively.

Crop residues were either baled and removed, as with wheat and rape straw, or were flailed or ‘topped’ and left on the soil surface, as was the case with potato tops and sugarbeet tops. Wheat stubble and rape stubble, together with leaf litter and weeds, were incorporated after harvest. The ploughing in of crop residues returned 4–35% of the original nitrogen fertilizer application to the soil, in addition to that which already remained at harvest, which averaged 24, 29 and 25% of that applied to winter wheat, oilseed rape and sugarbeet respectively. Less remained at harvest after potatoes (c. 21%) and more after spring beans (c. 49%). Most of the labelled residue remained in the top-soil (0–23cm) layer.

15N-labelled fertilizer unaccounted for in crop and soil (0–100 cm) at harvest of winter wheat, oilseed rape, potatoes, sugarbeet and spring beans averaged 23, 25, 19, 14 and 26% of that applied, respectively. Gaseous losses of fertilizer N by denitrification were probably greater following applications to winter wheat and oilseed rape, where the N was applied earlier (and the soils were wetter) than with potatoes and sugarbeet. Consequently, it may well be advantageous to delay the application of fertilizer N to winter wheat and oilseed rape if the soil is wet.

Total inorganic N (labelled and unlabelled) in soils (0–100 cm) following harvest of potatoes given 15N-labelled fertilizer in spring averaged 70 kg N ha−1 and was often greater than after the corresponding crops of winter wheat and oilseed rape, which averaged 53 kg N ha−1 and 49 kg N ha−1, respectively. On average, 91 kg ha−1 of inorganic N was found in soil (0–100 cm) following spring beans. Least inorganic N remained in the soil following sugarbeet, averaging only 19 kg N ha−1. The risk of nitrate leaching in the following winter, based on that which remained in the soil at harvest, ranked in decreasing order, was: spring beans=potatoes>oilseed rape=winter wheat>sugarbeet. On average, only 2·9% of the labelled fertilizer applied to winter wheat and oilseed rape remained in the soil (0–100 cm) as inorganic N (NO−3+NH+4) at harvest; with sugarbeet only 1·1% remained. In most cases c. 10% of the mineral N present in the soil at this time was derived from the nitrogen fertilizer applied to arable crops in spring. However, substantially more (c. 21%) was derived from fertilizer following harvest of winter wheat infected with take-all (Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici) and after potatoes. With winter wheat and sugarbeet, withholding fertilizer N had little effect on the total quantity of inorganic N present in the soil profile at harvest, but with oilseed rape and potatoes there was a decrease of, on average, 38 and 50%, respectively. A decrease in the amount of nitrogen applied to winter wheat and sugarbeet in spring would therefore not significantly decrease the quantity of nitrate at risk to leaching during the following autumn and winter, but may be more effective with rape and potatoes. However, if wheat growth is severely impaired by take-all, significant amounts of fertilizer-derived nitrate will remain in the soil at harvest, at risk to leaching.
