Pests and diseases impact on crop yield and quality, and also reduce resource-use efficiency. Improved crop protection strategies to prevent such damage and loss can increase production and make a substantial contribution to food security. DNA-based technologies are likely to greatly increase the speed, sensitivity and accuracy of pest and pathogen detection and diagnosis. Rapid sequencing of nucleic acids from infected plants will aid identification of novel disease agents. Biomarkers of disease or crop damage such as volatile chemicals or blends may also be used to detect pest outbreaks. Biosensors coupled to information networks will provide real-time monitoring and surveillance of crops or stored produce and hence early warning of emerging problems and new invasive species. Challenges remain in the dissemination of new technologies and information to resource poor farmers in developing countries, although the rapid extension of the internet, mobile phones and other communication networks will provide new opportunities. Defining the genetic and molecular basis of innate plant immunity has been a major advance in plant biology with the potential to identify new targets for intervention via novel chemistry or genetic modification (GM). Identification of regulatory genes, signal molecules, pathways and networks controlling induced plant defence should lead to the development of a new generation of defence modulators, delivered either as crop protection products, or via biological agents on seeds or in the root zone. There should also be opportunities to select more responsive crop genotypes, or to develop transgenic crops tailored to respond to specific chemical cues or molecular patterns diagnostic for particular biotic threats. Sequencing of the genomes of the major crop species and their wild relatives will expand enormously the known gene pool and diversity of genetic resources available for plant breeders to access. It should be possible to identify genomic regions and genes conferring more durable, quantitative resistance to pathogens. The breeding cycle will be accelerated by high-throughput phenotyping and more efficient selection of resistance traits using within-gene markers. GM approaches will facilitate pyramiding (combining) resistance genes with different specificities and modes of action, thereby reducing the risk of directional selection for virulence. Analysis of the genomes of plant pathogens and invertebrate pests is already providing new information on genes, gene families and processes involved in host colonization and pathogenicity. Comparative genomics of species with diverse host ranges, contrasting feeding habits and different pathogenic lifestyles will identify new targets for inhibiting pest attack and aid the development of novel antimicrobial drugs and pesticides. Understanding the natural ecology of pests and pathogens, such as the factors determining host location, resource exploitation and interactions with other organisms, will improve our ability to manipulate behaviour, or exploit natural enemies or other antagonists of pest species. Volatile signals, either from natural plant sources, or engineered in transgenic crops, will be more widely used to modify pest behaviour. It may also be possible to manipulate microbial communities regulating pathogen populations and activity, and thereby recruit and retain more effective biocontrol agents. Insights into the natural diversity and activity of soil and microbial populations in the zones surrounding roots and seeds will provide new information on mechanisms of suppression regulating pest species. Fully effective interventions are unlikely, due to the complexity and diversity of the soil system, but there should be progress towards integrated control regimes combining more resistant crop genotypes (either selected or GM) with targeted management of natural suppressive processes. Harnessing new technologies and knowledge to create more durable resistant crops and sustainable disease and pest management systems will require improved understanding of the factors driving pest and pathogen adaptation and evolution. There must also be an increased emphasis on translational research and delivery, and developing strategies appropriate for lower-input production systems, if the second ‘green revolution’ is to become a reality.

Two experiments carried out in 1968 and 1969 are described which examined, through growth and yield analysis, the effect of nitrogen on the growth of oilseed rape. The results of the second experiment, when 0, 105·5 and 211·0 kg N/ha were compared, are presented and discussed. The application of nitrogen increased the yields of seed and oil, principally through increased production of seeds by a larger number of pods. However, the application of nitrogen had little effect on average pod weight or average seed weight. Crop growth rates were increased by the application of nitrogen and reached their highest levels during the period of pod development when the leaf areas had declined to very low levels. The order of effects of nitrogen (N 2 > Nl > NO) was similar for LAI, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per pod and it is likely that the effect of nitrogen was achieved indirectly through an increase in the supply of assimilates to the flowers and young pods. This suggests that the maintenance of a large and photosynthetically efficient leaf area during the period of flowering is necessary for high yields in this crop.

The results also suggest that once pods are macroscopic they produce much of the assimilates needed for their own growth.

The implications of these findings with regard to both practice and further research are discussed.

Climate change biology is witnessing a significant quantity of new publications each year, which compromises efforts to keep up-to-date on the rapidly growing body of climate change biology literature. The present paper provides an overview on research approaches and challenges in climate change biology with respect to plant pathogens, insect pests and weeds (collectively termed ‘pests’ here). It also summarizes the suggestions of researchers about how to conceptualize and prioritize future research strategies. Recently published key studies demonstrate that climate change research is qualitatively advancing and that the interactions among environmental and biotic factors which have been found are complex. This complexity hinders attempts to generalize responses of pests to changes in climate. The challenge remains to identify the most significant causal relationships and to separate them from other factors such as crop management practices, which may also influence the observed changes in pest distribution and prevalence in managed ecosystems. In addition, the present overview shows that there are still gaps in many research areas, while other fields have been intensively investigated. For example, the identification of potential benefits in plant protection that may emerge from future climate change has not been explored as extensively as the potential threats. However, encouraging developments can be observed in recent climate change research, for instance the increased number of studies performed under subtropical and tropical climatic conditions, the increased availability of results from multi-factorial field experiments and modelling studies do consider increasingly pest–crop–climate interactions. Further progress can be expected, provided that researchers, sponsors and other stakeholders maintain their interest in climate change biology research.

A water-culture technique has been described which makes it possible to determine with precision the effects on plant growth resulting from the absence of traces of the various heavy metals.

The essential nature of copper for plant growth has been confirmed, and the quantitative data presented show that the addition of traces of copper to a nutrient solution leads to increases of growth of the order of 200–1200%.

The characteristic symptoms produced by growing oats, peas, wheat, Wimmera rye-grass, Phalaris, flax, tomato, subterranean clover, and lucerne in nutrient solutions devoid of copper are described. Copper becomes necessary for normal healthy growth at an early seedling stage and is required so long as active growth is proceeding. Optimum growth of oats was obtained throughout a wide range of copper concentration in the nutrient solution.

Oats grown in a copper-free nutrient solution until the development of acute deficiency symptoms recovered and completed their normal life cycle on the addition of sufficient copper to the solution.

The copper content of oats at various stages of growth has been determined. The proportion of copper in the dry matter of the plant was greatest in the young stages and rapidly decreased as growth proceeded.

The copper content of mature oat plants showing symptoms of copper deficiency was less than 1·0 mg. per kg. whether grown in nutrient solution or obtained from copper-deficient soils. Oats which ceased growth from copper deficiency at an earlier stage of development contained a relatively greater amount of copper in their dry matter.

The effect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense on growth, water status and yield of dryland sorghum (cv. RS 610 and cv. H-226) growing on stored soil moisture was examined in three field experiments conducted during the years 1983–5.

Plants were sampled at regular intervals, and the following characteristics were measured: dry-matter accumulation, leaf area, grain yield, percentage nitrogen and phosphorus in leaves, leaf water potential, canopy temperature, transpiration, stomatal conductance and soil water depletion.

Inoculation led to an average increase of 19% in total stover dry-matter yield, as a result of higher rates of dry-matter accumulation during the early stages of growth. Azospirillum inoculation caused a 15–18% increase in grain yield in all three experiments. This increase was associated with a greater number of seeds per panicle.

The water regime of sorghum plants was improved by inoculation, as seen in their higher leaf water potential, lower canopy temperatures and greater stomatal conductance and transpiration. Total extraction of soil moisture by inoculated plants was greater (by about 15%) and occurred from deeper soil layers, compared with non-inoculated controls.

These findings indicate that inoculation with Azospirillum can lead to yield increases in dryland grain sorghum, primarily through improved utilization of soil moisture.

1. A review of the literature relating to the frequency at which pigs suckle under natural conditions was made. The evidence indicated that the average interval between successive sucklings is approximately 1–1¼ hr.

2. A number of sows and their litters were continuously observed for varying periods of time under natural conditions and a similar average interval between sucklings was observed.

3. A review of the literature relating to the determination of milk production of sows was made. This showed that the majority of previous workers imposed, during the periods when the litters were being weighed before and after every suckling, a suckling frequency that did not simulate the natural behaviour of the animals. Evidence suggesting that the imposition of such unnatural conditions invalidated the findings, in so far as they might indicate the true milking capacity of the animals, was discussed.

4. An experiment to obtain direct evidence on the importance of the suckling interval in relation to the milk obtained by the pigs was carried out. Conclusive evidence was obtained that when suckling was allowed every hour, both the quantity of milk obtained by the litters and their live-weight gain in 24 hr. periods were much greater than was the case when suckling was allowed only every 2½ or 3 hr. In addition, the pigs on the hourly suckling frequency utilized their milk intake more efficiently.

5. An experiment was carried out in which an attempt was made to obtain, under natural conditions, a valid estimate of the 56 days' lactation yield of three Large White gilts. The method of weighing the individual pigs before and after suckling was used, and the animals were allowed to suckle every hour.

6. The estimated average lactation yield was 768 lb., with a range of from 882 to 655 lb., although it was suggested that the true yield might be some 5–10% higher. The figures obtained in this work were shown to be very much higher than the yields reported by most of the previous workers.

7. The nursing and suckling behaviour of the dams and their litters was studied. Observations of significance in relation to the variation in growth of pigs within a litter were made.

8. Data were obtained concerning the average amount of milk obtained by individual pigs at a suckling, the total amount ejected at a suckling, the effect of daylight and of darkness on the amount of milk obtained, the relative productivity of the individual mammary glands and the efficiency with which the milk intake was utilized by the individual pigs in the litter.

9. A close positive relation between milk intake and live-weight gain during the first 3 weeks of life was found. During the last 5 weeks of lactation, when supplementary food was available, this close relationship was not seen.

10. The growth rate of the suckling pig, as related to the supply of food, was discussed. The evidence available suggested that the supply of sow's milk was frequently insufficient to meet the requirements of the pigs for optimum growth.

11. The chemical composition of sow's milk in relation to the stage of lactation was studied.

1. A survey was carried out on dairy farms in the south of Scotland during the period 1958–59 to obtain information on: (a) the mineral element composition of spring pastures associated with grass tetany or staggers and hypomagnesaemia, and (b) the influence of magnesium supplements on the incidence of these conditions and on serum magnesium levels.

2. Pastures associated with grass tetany had a significantly lower average magnesium and sodium content and a higher potassium content than those which were classed as normal. These differences were magnified in the values of the ratios K/(Ca + Mg) and (K + Ca + P)/(Mg + Na) which were considerably higher in tetany pastures. The incidence of tetany was positively correlated with the value of the former ratio. These results are similar to those obtained in Holland.

3. The analytical results for pastures associated with hypomagnesaemia in clinically normal cows were not significantly different from those for normal pastures and there was no evidence of any association between the composition of the pasture and the incidence or severity of the hypomagnesaemia or the serum magnesium levels.

4. The magnesium and sodium contents of the majority of the pastures examined would be judged as inadequate in the light of available information on the requirement of these elements.

5. There was no evidence of any correlation between the magnesium content of the pasture and that of any of the other elements studied.

6. Cases of grass tetany occurred in 25% of the 108 herds studied, the mean incidence in affected herds being 4·5 ± 0·65%. The overall incidence was 1·1 ± 0·25% and was significantly lower when a magnesium supplement was given as a prophylactic measure.

7. Hypomagnesaemia was detected in clinically normal cows after turning out in 41·2% of the herds, the overall incidence being 8·7 ± 1·0%. On tetany free farms the feeding of calcined magnesite or magnesium-rich mineral mixtures did not appear to reduce the incidence of hypomagnesaemia or the fall in serum magnesium levels which occurred after turning out.

8. These results emphasize the wide individual variation in the susceptibility of different cows to the factors causing hypomagnesaemia and grass tetany and also the differences between the two conditions in their dietary relationships. It is suggested that dietary factors may be responsible for producing the clinical signs of grass tetany in hypo-magnesaemic cows.

When one or two leaves were removed out of the three or sometimes four present on each tiller of five genotypes of perennial ryegrass grown in nutrient solution, it was found that the relative growth rate (RGR) was not much less than that of untreated plants. The removal of lower leaves had no effect on RGR. Removal of all leaf blades depressed RGR. It is suggested that the results obtained indicate that the plant has the capacity to compensate for loss of leaf tissue by increased activity in the remaining leaves. Leaf appearance rate and tiller production were found to be the attributes most sensitive to the defoliation treatments imposed, and the degree to which leaf appearance rates were affected by defoliation was found to be a good indicator of the regrowth capacity of the different genotypes. Evidence was obtained linking high regrowth potential with high relative increases in the proportion of plant material allocated to new shoot growth.

S.24 perennial ryegrass was conserved by ensiling directly (control) and after treatment with a solution of formaldehyde at the rate of 6 g HCHO/100 g crude protein. After storage for 90 days, part of the formaldehyde-treated silage was dried in a high-temperature drier.

The quantitative digestion of the energy, carbohydrate and nitrogen moieties of the three diets and the production of volatile fatty acids and microbial protein within the rumen were measured using five sheep fitted with re-entrant cannulae at the proximal duodenum and terminal ileum.

Treatment with formaldehyde depressed organic matter and energy digestion within the rumen compared with untreated silage (P < 0·001) and a further depression was observed on the dehydrated material. Both formaldehyde-treated silages showed enhanced flows of total amino acids into the small intestine compared with the control silage and net absorption from the small intestine was elevated by 13 and 21% respectively on these two diets. On the untreated silage over 71% of the protein entering the small intestine was microbial in origin whereas, due to depressed microbial growth and increased protection of feed protein from rumen fermentation, microbial protein comprised only 17% of duodenal protein on the two formaldehyde-treated silage diets. Fifteen and 81 % of the dietary protein passed undegraded through the stomachs to the duodenum on the control and the two formaldehyde-treated silage diets respectively.

Total VFA production within the rumen was not significantly influenced by the treatments imposed, but on the untreated silage only 56% of the energy apparently digested in the rumen was converted to VTA energy whilst a mean value of 74% was recorded on the other two diets.

Estimates of the total energy absorbed gave values of 10·6, 11·9 and 10·7 MJ/kg D.M. for the control, formaldehyde and dried, formaldehyde silage diets with absorbed protein energy representing 21, 22 and 26% of the total absorbed energy respectively.

1. The weights of muscular tissue, fatty tissue, bone, and tendons, etc. in the carcasses of twenty-nine cattle, fifty-five sheep and forty pigs are given. The weights of fat, dry fat-free residue, and water in the muscular and fatty tissues from the carcasses of twenty-nine cattle, twenty-nine sheep and two pigs (one wild and one domesticated) are also given. The cattle represent eight breeds, the sheep nine breeds and the pigs two breeds. Ages range from newly born to over 12 years and there are fifty females, seventy castrated males and four newly born males. The animals thus represent a very wide cross-section of the meat industry.

1. Plant nutrients, N, P and K, were applied to the soil surface or injected at a depth of 18 in. or 30 in. in perennial ryegrass swards, when the upper horizons of the soil profile were dry.

2. When the surface soil was dry and a soil water deficit of 2 in. existed there was no response to surface applied N but injection of N into moist soil at a depth of 18 in. produced a marked increase of growth. At this depth of injection there was a significant positive interaction between N and PK.

3. There was a substantial recovery in the herbage (59–80%) of the nitrogen applied to the subsoil, provided water was available in the soil horizon in which the nitrogen was applied.

4. Failure of a grass sward to regrow after cutting when the water available to the plant has been removed from the uppermost soil horizons is largely due to a deficiency of plant nutrients in the subsoil. The major deficiency is that of nitrogen.

The influence of dairy cattle feed composition on the manure composition and on the dynamics and plant availability of cattle slurry N was studied. Dairy cows were fed seven different forages either with or without supplemental concentrates. The concentration of N in faeces dry matter varied from 18 to 38 g/kg dry matter and increased with increasing digestibility of the feed. Cattle slurries consisting of a mixture of 0·5 faecal N and 0·5 urinary N were stored according to common agricultural practice in Northern Europe. The mineralization of faecal N during slurry storage was very variable (0·09–0·50). The plant availability of N in the slurries originating from cattle fed with known diets was tested in small, framed field plots with spring barley, under conditions with minimal N losses. The nitrogen uptake in barley was determined and the mineral fertilizer equivalent (MFE) of slurry N was calculated. The net release of mineral N and CO2 from the slurries in soil was also measured in a parallel incubation study. The MFE of cattle slurry N varied from 53 to 75%. After correcting for the measured urine-N/faeces-N ratio and expected ammonia emission, the MFE varied from 51 to 78%. The plant availability and net release of cattle slurry N were influenced by forage type and feeding level. The MFE was negatively correlated with the concentration of crude fibre and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) in the diet, and positively correlated with the dietary protein content. The net release of CO2 from the slurries after 12 weeks in soil was significantly influenced by the concentration of crude fibre in the diet. The plant availability of slurry N was significantly correlated with the ammonium content (R2=0·53) and negatively correlated with the slurry C[ratio ]N ratio (R2=0·67) and the dry matter[ratio ]N ratio (R2=0·58). Residual slurry N left in the soil after harvest of the first crop varied from 0·25 to 0·47 of total slurry N. It is concluded that the fibre and the protein content of cattle diets have a significant influence on the plant availability of cattle slurry N and on the amount of residual slurry N remaining in the soil after the first growing season.

Milk production is of fundamental and practical importance in all farm mammals. With dairy cattle in particular extensive study of milk secretion has resulted in raising the milking performance in all domestic breeds. This has mainly been achieved by the adoption of improved breeding and feeding practices.

Twenty-four Friesian cows were allocated to one of four diets for weeks 3–14 of lactation following 2 weeks on a common diet. The diets (kg air-dry feed/day) were 7–2 kg hay and 10·8 kg either starchy or fibrous concentrates (60S and 60F) or 3·5 kg hay and 14·0 kg either starchy or fibrous concentrates (80S and 80F). Rumen samples were taken by stomach tube in weeks 10 and 12 of lactation and the digestibility of the diets was measured with four cows per treatment during weeks 13 and 14. The digestibility of the same feeds was also measured in sheep at maintenance.

The principal carbohydrate constituents of the concentrates were barley, wheat and cassava in the starchy concentrates and citrus pulp, sugar-beet pulp and wheat feed in the fibrous concentrates. The concentrates were designed to have similar concentrations of metabolizable energy (ME) and the diets were planned to provide similar intakes of digestible energy and crude protein.

Milk yield and composition were very similar for treatments 60S and 60F. With the higher proportion of starchy concentrates (80S), milk yield was about 20% greater than on 60S, fat concentration fell severely but protein and lactose concentrations were unaffected. With the higher proportion of fibrous concentrates (80F), milk yield and the protein and lactose concentration were similar to values on 60F but fat concentration was lower, though not nearly so low as on 80S. Milk energy yield was reduced by the higher proportion of concentrates but was unaffected by type of carbohydrates. Live-weight changes were small.

In both the sheep, consuming at maintenance, and the lactating cows consuming at about 3 times maintenance, digestibility of dry matter, organic matter and energy was higher with the higher concentrate diets but was unaffected by type of concentrate. The digestibility of fibre was greater with the fibrous concentrates but the effect of level of concentrate inclusion was inconsistent. Digestibility coefficients were consistently lower for the lactating cows than for the sheep.

The proportion of acetic acid in the rumen volatile fatty acids in the cows was higher and the proportion of propionic acid was lower with the fibrous concentrates. The differences were much greater with the higher proportion of concentrates.

During weeks 15–22 of lactation the cows were reallocated to concentrate treatments and given hay ad libitum. Hay intake was about 1 kg/day higher with the fibrous concentrates but the difference was not significant. Hay intake fell by about 0·6 kg/kg concentrate intake for both concentrate types. No significant differences in milk yield or composition were established, probably because of incomplete adaptation even after 8 weeks.

It is concluded that at concentrate intakes of about 10 kg/day, the source of carbohydrate in the concentrates has little effect on milk production when the concentrates are of similar ME concentration. However, at higher levels of concentrate inclusion, although the diets may have similar ME concentrations, important differences in the yields of fat, protein and lactose occur due to carbohydrate source and these can be related to differences in rumen fermentation.

Soil responses to deep (30–35 cm) and normal (15–20 cm) mouldboard ploughing, chisel ploughing and zero-tillage have been compared for 7 years in a field experiment growing continuous spring barley near Edinburgh. The soil was of variable texture, from moderately well-drained sandy loam overlying loam to imperfectly to poorly drained sandy clay loam overlying clay loam, classified as stagnogleyic brown earth to cambio stagnogley soil. Soils of this type derived from Carboniferous till are widely used for cereal production in south-east Scotland. Measurements of soil physical properties were made at crop emergence, midseason and at harvest to characterize seasonal and long-term responses to tillage and traffic. After the first 3 years bulk density responses varied little within or between seasons, showing a compacted horizon from 0–15 cm under zero-tillage and a looser horizon from 21–33 cm under deep ploughing compared with normal ploughing. Immediately below the depth of normal ploughing there was no difference in bulk density between this treatment and zero-tillage while in some years the chisel-ploughing treatment was denser. Moisture content responses on a weight basis, together with air-filled porosity responses, showed large differences between treatments particularly at the time of crop emergency, indicating substantial alterations in the soil profile hydrology. Expressed on a volume basis the increased moisture content near the surface under zero-tillage became more pronounced and the other effects disappeared. Cone resistance responses were proportionately larger than those for bulk density and showed one major difference in that below the depth of ploughing cone resistance was greater for zero-tillage than normal ploughing in the sixth and seventh seasons, but not previously. For bulk density, but probably not for cone resistance, there were no increases after the third season of zero-tillage, the soil reaching an equilibrium density for the current management practices and machinery usage.

Drought is probably the most important factor limiting crop yields worldwide, therefore it is not surprising that there has been continuing interest in the ways in which drought affects crop yield. Efforts have been concentrated in this area in the hope that it would prove possible to use a knowledge of drought physiology to provide a rational basis for the development of rapid methods of breeding drought tolerant cultivars, and also to help in the improvement of crop management for dry conditions. The last five years have seen some important reassessments of the underlying principles and concepts involved in plant response to drought and these will be outlined in this brief review. Some of these important shifts in emphasis have been highlighted by Kramer (1988), Passioura (1988), Schulze el al. (1988) and Boyer (1989), particularly in relation to the question of what measure of water stress is most relevant to plant function. As it is not possible to cover all aspects of drought physiology in a brief review of this nature, we highlight four topics where recent findings may have particular relevance to the improvement of drought tolerance in agricultural crops.

In the course of two breeding seasons 137 mature to aged ewes of mixed breeds but predominantly Border Leicester × Cheviots, Dorset × Cheviots, Suffolks and Hampshires and their crosses, have been injected with PMS or PU, and at different levels of dosage, and slaughtered at intervals after service to determine the sequence of events following treatment. In addition ten ewe lambs received similar treatment and eighty-one flock Suffolk and Romney Marsh ewes, of which forty-nine were injected, have been studied. The results may be summarized as follows:

1. The injection of 500–2000 i.u. PMS on the 12th day of the oestrous cycle will regularly induce multiple ovulations at the ensuing heat.

2. There is a significant dose-response relationship between 500 and 2000 i.u. PMS. Mean ovulation rates observed were: 500 i.u., 4·1; 1000 i.u., 10·6; 2000 i.u., 15·8. There is, however, considerable variation, the ranges being 2–9, 4–33 and 8–29 respectively.

3. The injection of 1000 i.u. PU subcutaneously on the 12th day of the cycle causes marked ovarian and cyclic abnormalities, and heat may be entirely suppressed. When injected intravenously at heat following a priming injection with PMS on the 12th day there is no evidence that it increases the rate of ovulation; in other words, the ewe can ovulate up to at least thirty ova without difficulty, provided the follicles are matured.

4. PMS levels of 500 and 1000 i.u. do not cause any apparent ovarian abnormalities apart from superovulation. A very high proportion of all follicles developed rupture and form apparently normal corpora lutea. PMS at 2000 i.u. causes lutein cysts and ovulation may be inhibited.

5. PMS at 500 and 1000 i.u. causes no cyclic abnormalities, although cycle length is slightly shortened. In the event of the ewe failing to conceive, the subsequent oestrus is normal, and ovulation and fertilization of the ova occur.

6. Commercial PMS is probably as effective as fresh PMS provided it is correctly standardized. There seems no reason to suspect differences in multiple ovulating efficiency between different batches of fresh PMS.

7. While breed differences in response possibly exist they were not observed in these experiments. Nor were differences apparently related to the relative time of injection within the breeding season.

8. There is an ovarian weight-PMS level, doseresponse relationship which is almost entirely accounted for by the numbers of corpora lutea and hence of luteal tissue.

9. Multiple-ovulated ova are highly fertilizable. However, when fifteen or more are shed the rate of tubal transport is considerably accelerated and the proportion fertilized appears to fall. One- and two- cell ova have been recovered from the uterus within 48 hr. of service. Nine fertilized ova have been recovered from one ewe.

10. Considerable embryonic mortality occurs before attachment of the blastocysts. None the less, multiple impregnation does occur but is followed by further early death. Up to thirteen attachments have been observed in one ewe, but all but three were showing signs of regression by the 19th day.

11. Post-attachment mortality takes the form of an initial retardation commencing about the 15th day, embryos apparently dying a day or so later. The peak of mortality occurs between the 17th and 19th day, by which time definite signs of resorption are apparent.

12. By 21 days equilibrium has been reached, the mean numbers of survivals of those ewes pregnant being some 260%. This level is maintained without further loss until the 68th day. Several cases of four normal foetuses were noted up to the 41st day, and one uterus containing six perfectly normal foetuses was recovered at 61 days.

13. The overall fertility indicated by these slaughterhouse ewes varies with the level of PMS administered. While equilibrium is achieved by animals conceiving, at about 250–260% viable foetuses, regardless of the dose injected, there is increasing proportion of returns to service with increasing dosage. For the most part this appears due to hormonal imbalance at the time of ovulation and fertilization when an excessive number (> 15) ova are shed. This results in accelerated ovum transport through the tubes and lowered rate of fertilization. Between ovulation rates of 4 and 12, produced by 500 i.u., rate of conception is extremely high. Of twenty-five ewes receiving 500 i.u. PMS, twenty-three (92%) conceived to the first fertile service. The conception rates were reduced to 80 and 60% by 1000 and 2000 i.u. respectively.

14. Although after the end of the 3rd week there is no direct evidence of further foetal mortality, the percentage of lambs born in the flock ewes injected with 500 i.u. PMS was only 192% of those lambing or 167% of all ewes mated (147% for controls). This indicates a loss late in pregnancy. This can in part accounted for by abortion; one ewe aborted, due, is believed, to her carrying more lambs than she was physically capable of retaining.

15. OffifteenflockSuffolksinjectedinthe 2nd year with 500 i.u. PMS, thirteen lambed, one aborted and one did not conceive. The thirteen ewes lambing presented twenty-five lambs, including one set triplets and one of quadruplets. All the latter were viable, but two sets of twins were bom dead. One triplet was lost on fostering and one other lamb was lost, so nineteen were tailed. Of fifteen controls, all lambed, giving twenty-one lambs bom of which twenty survived. Conception to first fertile service was higher in the injected than in the control ewes. In the preceding year when 1000 i.u. was given, both conception and lambing rates were appreciably lowered as compared with untreated controls. The significance of this in respect to the level of PMS administered is stressed.

16. It is concluded that the major part of the embryonic loss is due to a uterine environment which is incapable of supporting more than a limited number of embryos. It is considered possible that there are breed differences in this, and that each breed, and individual within the breed, has ‘Maximum Potential Fertility’.

17. This ‘Maximum Potential Fertility’ is not attained in normal breeding practice, since the number of ova shed by the ewe tends to constitute a limiting factor. Use of a level of PMS which will induce between three and ten ovulations—in the case of this experiment, 500 i.u.—removes this limiting factor, giving the individual full opportunity to express its full potential breeding capabilities.

18. There is some indication that the use of PMS in lambs may not give good results, and its use for the while should be restricted to mature ewes.

19. Since 500 i.u. PMS has resulted in a higher conception rate to first service and to a greater number of lambs born, it is apparent that this technique of injecting on the 12th day of the cycle a level of PMS which will result in a moderate number of ovulations is worthy of exhaustive field trials, notwithstanding the high post-natal mortality observed in the few cases which were allowed to go to term.

20. In view of the higher indicated fertility of the slaughtered ewes which were mainly Border Leicester cross and Dorset × Cheviots—normally very highly fertile ewes as compared with the flock Suffolks—it is considered possible that this technique will yield best results with more highly fertile breeds.

21. To have any hope for successful increase of fertility in mammals following gonadotrophin treatment the hormone must be administered at a time and at such a concentration that it will augment, but not upset, normal hypophysial and ovarian function.

1. A large-scale grazing management study comparing rotational grazing and continuous grazing with dairy cows at two stocking rates over four complete production seasons is described.

2. The four treatments were: (i) controlled grazing, light stocking rate; (ii) controlled grazing, heavy stocking rate; (iii) uncontrolled grazing, light stocking rate; (iv) uncontrolled grazing, heavy stocking rate.

Each treatment involved 40 cows for a first 2-year phase and 42 cows for the following 2 years. Each herd had a normal age distribution pattern and seven 2-year-old first lactation heifers (17% of total herd) were introduced each year to maintain this pattern.

3. Stocking rate was the more important factor affecting the efficiency of pasture utilization as measured by per acre output of milk and butterfat. In general, high stocking was associated with higher outputs per acre despite lower yields per animal.

4. Grazing method was of less importance. In general, controlled rotational grazing was superior to uncontrolled continuous grazing, both per animal and per acre, but the average influence even of these extremes of management was only half that of stocking rate.

5. Significant interactions between stocking rate and grazing method existed. Under continuous grazing a point was reached where production per acre declined to the vanishing point with increased stocking rate due to excessive depression of per cow yield: this point was not reached under rotational grazing at the same high stocking levels.

6. The results suggest that optimum stocking rate under rotational grazing occurs at a level some 5–10% higher than under continuous grazing. A depression of 10–12% in per cow yield, compared with more lenient grazing, corresponds with optimum stocking level irrespective of the grazing system. This estimate is suggested as a guide line in applying the principles involved.

Grasslands are one of the world's major ecosystems groups and over the last century their use has changed from being volunteer leys, or a resource on non-arable land, to a productive resource equal to any crop and managed as such. Many grasslands are now being acknowledged as having a multifunctional role in producing food and rehabilitating crop lands, in environmental management and cultural heritage. However, grasslands across the globe are under increasing pressure from increasing human populations, reduced areas with increasing livestock numbers, and declining terms of trade for livestock production, and they are managed to varying degrees of effectiveness. The complexity of grassland uses and the many aspects of grassy ecosystems require a framework wherein solutions for better management can be developed. The present paper discusses a generic approach to grassland management to satisfy these multiple objectives. A focus on ecosystem functionality, i.e. on water, nutrient and energy cycling and on the biodiversity required to sustain those functions, provides a means of resolving the dilemmas faced, through the intermediary, management-related, criteria of herbage mass, which also relates directly to animal production. Emphasis is placed on the opportunities to satisfy multiple objectives. A consideration of the basic relationships between stocking rate and animal production shows that the longer-term, economically optimal stocking rate is associated with improved environmental outcomes. There may be environmental objectives that go beyond economically sustainable limits for livestock producers and in those cases direct payments from the government or others will be needed. These are likely to be where degradation is clearly apparent. The achievement of desirable outcomes in grassland management that satisfy multiple objectives will require new areas of research that seek viable solutions for farmers and society.

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of supplementation of a control diet of barley grain and barley straw containing 4 mg copper (Cu)/kg dry matter (D.M.) either with 5 mg molybdenum (Mo)/kg D.M. or with 500 or 800 mg iron (Fe)/kg D.M. on puberty, fertility and oestrous cycles of cattle. Puberty occurred normally in control, Fesupplemented and control animals on a restricted intake whereas it was delayed by 12 and 8 weeks respectively by Mo supplementation. This effect of Mo was not due to the low Cu status since this was equally low in the Fe-supplemented animals, nor was it due to the reduced growth rate since puberty occurred normally in control animals that had a similar live-weight gain. A significant reduction in the pulsatile release of luteinizing hormone was observed within 11 weeks of the Mo supplementation and before any of the other clinical signs were evident, suggesting that Mo may be affecting puberty by altering the release of luteinizing hormone either directly or indirectly.

Mo supplementation significantly reduced the percentage conception rate to 12–33% compared with 57–80% in control and Fe-supplemented animals. This effect was not dependent on the rate of live-weight gain which was standardized across the different treatments at approximately 0·6 kg/day. Within 12 weeks of the replacement of dietary Fe by Mo a lower conception rate occurred; replacing dietary Mo by Fe led to a normal conception rate within 12 weeks without any accompanying changes in Cu status or in the rate of live-weight gain. The plasma Mo concentrations, however, changed significantly during these alterations in dietary supplementation. The pre-ovulatory peak height of luteinizing hormone was significantly lower in animals on the Mo-supplemented diet compared with control and Fe-supplemented animals, but the administration of LHRH did not alter the conception rate.

More Mo-supplemented animals failed to ovulate following prostaglandin induced synchronization in comparison with the other treatments, and by the 84th week a significantly greater number of Mo-supplemented animals (12/18) had become anoestrous compared with the other groups (2/30). Cu repletion of these anoestrous Mo animals for a period of 20 weeks did not result in resumption of normal oestrous cycles, but ovulation and oestrus were induced by progesterone and LHRH treatment. Results in the latter part of the study indicated that Mo caused superovulation.

These data show that Mo supplementation delayed the onset of puberty, decreased the conception rate and caused anovulation and anoestrus in cattle without accompanying changes in Cu status or in live-weight gain. It is suggested that these effects of Mo are associated with a decreased release of luteinizing hormone that might be due to an altered ovarian steroid secretion.
