We present several conjectures which would describe the Nielsen equivalence classes of generating pairs for the groups SL(2,q) and PSL(2,q). The Higman invariant, which is the union of the conjugacy classes of the commutator of a generating pair and its inverse, and the trace of the commutator play key roles. Combining known results with additional work, we clarify the relationships between the conjectures, and obtain various partial results concerning them. Motivated by the work of Macbeath (A. M. Macbeath, Generators of the linear fractional groups, in Number theory (Proc. Sympos. Pure Math., vol. XII, Houston, TX, 1967) (American Mathematical Society, Providence, RI, 1969), 14–32), we use another invariant defined using traces to develop algorithms that enable us to verify the conjectures computationally for all q up to 101, and to prove the conjectures for a highly restricted but possibly infinite set of q.

We investigate the spectral theory of integrable actions of a locally compact abelian group on a locally convex vector space. We start with an analysis of various spectral subspaces induced by the action of the group. This is applied to analyse the spectral theory of operators on the space, generated by measures on the group. We apply these results to derive general Tauberian theorems that apply to arbitrary locally compact abelian groups acting on a large class of locally convex vector spaces, which includes Fréchet spaces. We show how these theorems simplify the derivation of Mean Ergodic theorems.

In this paper we compute the weak Gorenstein global dimension of a coherent power series ring. It is shown that the weak Gorenstein global dimension of R[[x]] is equal to the weak Gorenstein global dimension of R plus one, provided R[[x]] is coherent.

To give a relatively elementary proof of the Brumer–Stark conjecture in a function field context involving no algebraic geometry beyond the Riemann–Roch theorem for curves, Hayes Compos. Math., vol. 55, 1985, pp. 209–239) defined a normalizing field $H_\mathfrak{e}^*$ associated with a fixed sgn-normalized Drinfeld module and its extension field $K_\mathfrak{m}$, which is an analogue of cyclotomic function fields over a rational function field. We present explicitly in this note the formulae for the genus of the two fields and the maximal real subfield $H_\mathfrak{m}$ of $K_\mathfrak{m}$. In some sense, our results can be regarded as generalizations of formulae for the genus of classical cyclotomic function fields obtained by Hayes Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., vol. 189, 1974, pp. 77–91) and Kida and Murabayashi (Tokyo J. Math., vol. 14(1), 1991, pp. 45–56).

Our purpose is to study the geometry of linear Weingarten spacelike hypersurfaces immersed in a locally symmetric Einstein spacetime, whose sectional curvature is supposed to obey some standard restrictions. In this setting, by using as main analytical tool a generalized maximum principle for complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds, we establish sufficient conditions to guarantee that such a hypersurface must be either totally umbilical or an isoparametric hypersurface with two distinct principal curvatures, one of which is simple. Applications to the de Sitter space are given.

We will compute the subgroup permutability degree of the projective special linear groups PSL(2,pn).

A real algebraic curve of genus g is a pair (S,〈 τ 〉), where S is a closed Riemann surface of genus g and τ: S → S is a symmetry, that is, an anti-conformal involution. A Schottky uniformization of (S,〈 τ 〉) is a tuple (Ω,Γ,P:Ω → S), where Γ is a Schottky group with region of discontinuity Ω and P:Ω → S is a regular holomorphic cover map with Γ as its deck group, so that there exists an extended Möbius transformation $\widehat{\tau}$ keeping Ω invariant with P o $\widehat{\tau}$=τ o P. The extended Kleinian group K=〈 Γ, $\widehat{\tau}$〉 is called an extended Schottky groups of rank g. The interest on Schottky uniformizations rely on the fact that they provide the lowest uniformizations of closed Riemann surfaces. In this paper we obtain a structural picture of extended Schottky groups in terms of Klein–Maskit's combination theorems and some basic extended Schottky groups. We also provide some insight of the structural picture in terms of the group of automorphisms of S which are reflected by the Schottky uniformization. As a consequence of our structural description of extended Schottky groups, we get alternative proofs to results due to Kalliongis and McCullough (J. Kalliongis and D. McCullough, Orientation-reversing involutions on handlebodies, Trans. Math. Soc. 348(5) (1996), 1739–1755) on orientation-reversing involutions on handlebodies.

We introduce the notion of upper and lower frequently universal sequences and see that ‘most’ of the universal approximations are obtained by sets of indices which have upper density 1 and lower density 0. We also show that a class of universal series related to lower density is of first category.

Let H be a real Hilbert space and denote by S its unit sphere. Consider the nonlinear eigenvalue problem Ax + ε B(x) =δ x, where A: H → H is a bounded self-adjoint (linear) operator with nontrivial kernel Ker A, and B: H → H is a (possibly) nonlinear perturbation term. A unit eigenvector x0 ∈ S∩ Ker A of A (thus corresponding to the eigenvalue δ=0, which we assume to be isolated) is said to be persistent, or a bifurcation point (from the sphere S∩ Ker A), if it is close to solutions x ∈ S of the above equation for small values of the parameters δ ∈ ℝ and ε ≠ 0. In this paper, we prove that if B is a C1 gradient mapping and the eigenvalue δ=0 has finite multiplicity, then the sphere S∩ Ker A contains at least one bifurcation point, and at least two provided that a supplementary condition on the potential of B is satisfied. These results add to those already proved in the non-variational case, where the multiplicity of the eigenvalue is required to be odd.

Malvenuto and Reutenauer (C. Malvenuto and C. Reutenauer, Duality between quasi-symmetric functions and the Solomon descent algebra, J. Algebra177 (1995), 967–982) showed how the total symmetric group ring ⊕nZΣn could be made into a Hopf algebra with a very nice structure which admitted the Solomon descent algebra as a sub-Hopf algebra. To do this they replaced the group multiplication by a convolution product, thus distancing their structure from the group structure of Σn. In this paper we examine what is possible if we keep to the group multiplication, and we also consider the question for more general families of groups. We show that a Hopf algebra structure is not possible, but cocommutative and non-cocommutative counital bialgebras can be obtained, arising from certain diagrams of group homomorphisms. In the case of the symmetric groups we note that all such structures are weak in the sense that the dual algebras have many zero-divisors, but structures which respect descent sums can be found.

Little is known about the generators system of the higher dimensional Picard modular groups. In this paper, we prove that the higher dimensional Eisenstein–Picard modular group PU(3, 1;ℤ[ω3]) in three complex dimensions can be generated by four given transformations.

The structure of groups which have at most two isomorphism classes of derived subgroups ($\mathfrak{D}$2-groups) is investigated. A complete description of $\mathfrak{D}$2-groups is obtained in the case where the derived subgroup is finite: the solution leads an interesting number theoretic problem. In addition, detailed information is obtained about soluble $\mathfrak{D}$2-groups, especially those with finite rank, where algebraic number fields play an important role. Also, detailed structural information about insoluble $\mathfrak{D}$2-groups is found, and the locally free $\mathfrak{D}$2-groups are characterized.

The class of $\mathfrak{m}$-full and four related classes of ideals in a local ring (R, $\mathfrak{m}$) are extended by replacing $\mathfrak{m}$ with other ideals and the resulting classes of ideals are compared. It is shown that contracted ideals are $\mathfrak{m}$-full in a local ring with infinite residue field.

Let d be a positive integer, q=(qij)d×d be a d×d matrix, ℂq be the quantum torus algebra associated with q. We have the semidirect product Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$=Der(ℂq)⋉Z(ℂq), where Z(ℂq) is the centre of the rational quantum torus algebra ℂq. In this paper, we construct a class of irreducible weight $\mathfrak{g}$-modules $\mathcal{V}$α (V,W) with three parameters: a vector α∈ℂd, an irreducible $\mathfrak{gl}$d-module V and a graded-irreducible $\mathfrak{gl}$N-module W. Then, we show that an irreducible Harish Chandra (uniformaly bounded) $\mathfrak{g}$-module M is isomorphic to $\mathcal{V}$α(V,W) for suitable α, V, W, if the action of Z(ℂq) on M is associative (respectively nonzero).

The goal of this paper is to describe explicitly simple modules for Schur superalgebra S(2|2) over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic zero or positive characteristic p>2.
