In about 1958, Merleau-Ponty told Sartre that he would write a book on nature. The news does not seem to have surprised Sartre, but one wonders why it didn't. After all, Merleau-Ponty had already had his say on this issue: both The Structure of Behavior and Phenomenology of Perception, his first two books and certainly his best known efforts, make up a single prolonged study of the relationship of consciousness and nature. It concludes to that philosophical primacy of the union of these in perception which has been Merleau-Ponty's “trademark” ever since. It was completed by 1945. Shortly afterward, he promised that he would describe the passage from perception to explicit, conceptualized knowledge in a book which he would call l'Origine de la Vérité. Meanwhile, he turned from the relations of consciousness with nature to those of consciousness with consciousness and worked at a phenomenology of history (in the period, roughly, from 1945 to 1955), a phenomenology of language (from 1950 to 1953), and even a phenomenology of philosophy (from 1953 to 1956).

Let us use ‘false’ and ‘not true’ (and cognates) in such a way that the latter expression covers the broader territory of the two; in other words, a statement's falsity implies its non-truth but not vice versa. For example, ‘John is ill’ cannot be false without being nontrue; but it can be non-true without being false, since it may not be true when ‘John is not ill’ is also not true, a situation we could describe by saying ‘It is neither the case that John is ill nor the case that John is not ill.’

On commémore assez couramment la naissance ou la mort d'un savant, qui sont deux événements contingents, étrangers à la valeur de l'homme, bien que le premier ait rendu cette valeur possible quant à la manifestation, et que le second l'ait rendue d'autant plus précieuse qu'il en a souligné la fragilité.

Paul Valéry a dit que «les grands hommes meurent deux fois, une fois comme hommes et une fois comme grands ». De Claude Bernard, on peut dire que l'année 1965 a confirmé sa survie comme grand, près d'un siècle après sa mort comme homme (1878), car ce qui fut célébré, au Collège de France, dans un Colloque à la fois historique et scientifique, c'est le Centenaire d'un grand livre. Commémoration done au plein sens du terme, puisqu'en identifiant un homme et son œuvre, la postérité ressuscitait le premier en reconnaissant et en proelamant la présence stimulante et agissante de la seconde dans l'univers de la culture.

Nul penseur, fût-il le plus étranger à la problématique propre de l'histoire, ne peut, bien entendu, s'empêcher de laisser entrevoir, çà et là au long de son œuvre, sa façon de comprendre celle-ci. Aussi est-ce avec beaucoup de prudence qu'il faut parler de «la philosophie de l'histoire» d'un auteur. Réservons pour la fin de cet article la question de savoir si la philosophie de Merleau-Ponty mérite ce titre et contentons-nous pour l'instant de dégager l'ensemble de réflexions que notre auteur présente comme une philosophie de l'histoire. Puisque Merleau-Ponty n'a jamais consacré une œuvre aux problémes de l'Histoire, on pourrait d'ailleurs être tenté de considérer ses réflexions sur la question comme des passages épisodiques qui trahissent seulement son profond intérét pour la situation politique où il s'est trouvé engagé. Il nous faudra donc montrer qu'on peut effectivement parler d'un «ensemble de réflexions» qui, pour ne pas avoir été jeté dans une œuvre particulière, doit se lire en filigrane tout au long des travaux du philosophe. C'est cette lecture en somme que le présent article veut suggérer.

The so-called ‘cyclical argument’ for immortality in the Phaedo represents an endeavour to give philosophical respectability to the ancient religious doctrine of the cycle or wheel of rebirth. According to this, the soul is reincarnated after the death of its body and a short period in the ‘other world’ in a purely disembodied state. Socrates sets himself the task of proving that a soul animating a new body must previously have animated another body whose death antedates the life of the new body.

In 1938, four years before his death, Collingwood characterized his life as “in the main an attempt to bring about a rapprochement between philosophy and history” (Autobiography, 77). Collingwood's success in this matter has been a subject of much debate. The majority of his critics have argued, following the leadership of T. A. Knox, that the alleged rapprochement was a failure. In the early writings, such as Religion and Philosophy and Speculum Mentis, it is simply obscure. In An Essay on Philosophical Method it emerges more clearly but with a definite bias in favour of philosophy. Sometime between 1936 and 1938, however, Collingwood underwent a radical conversion to the historicist doctrine, typical of the thought of Croce, that philosophy is a branch of history. The result, according to the Knox thesis, was an explicit repudiation, in the Autobiography (1938) and An Essay on Metaphysics (1939), of Collingwood's earlier belief in the priority and autonomy of philosophy.

Mr. Jon Wheatley declares himself opposed to a very popular contemporary account of the nature of moral virtue, which he describes as holding “that virtue consists in obeying a number of moral precepts all clearly within our power, the virtuous man being (presumably) he who never (or only rarely?) slips up in this obedience”. Because I concur with his rejection of this view, I am more than normally distressed, first at his confessed inability as a philosopher to offer more than a report of his own “prejudice” in opposition to the popular account, and second at the somewhat bizarre analysis of moral virtue which he presents as if it were the only alternative.

La philosophie contemporaine a fait d'immenses progrès en introduisant dans la spéculation la préoccupation de la technique. La phénoménologie, entre autres, a cherché à faire coïncider ses découvertes avec les témoignages de la science. Merleau-Ponty, un des propagandistes français de la méthode phénoménologique, a contribué à rapprocher cette sorte de philosophie de la psychologie de la forme, des théories de l'organisme, des analyses expérimentales de la sensation. Sa conception de la perception illustre assez bien sa démarche. Chose étrange, c'est par des aspects typiquement représentatifs qu'elle se rapproche le plus à ce sujet de la pensée de Berkeley qui se rapporte pourtant au contexte scientifique d'une autre époque, spécialement en ce qui touche à l'optique géométrique.

Consider two red disks having the same non-relational properties. That they are two and not one, it is claimed by some philosophers, can only be accounted for by claiming that each disk contains an individuator, i.e., a bare particular, which is merely numerically different from the particular in the other disk. While sucli a claim is clearly dialectical, one need not rest the case for bare particulars solely on the dialectical argument. One can, by giving an accurate phenomenological description of the situation containing the two red disks, also attempt to show that one is in fact acquainted with such entities. This latter possibility, however, has recently been challenged by Trentman on the grounds that one cannot give such a description without presupposing the existence of bare particulars.

In comments on my “Moral Responsibility for Dreams,” J. F. M. Hunter claims that I fail to see that “‘Dreaming is not an action’ is a grammatical remark, [not an “empirical” one] and as such makes no assertion as to what is or may be the case in our souls, but only about how we may talk about certain psychological goings-on.” (p. 535) Hunter argues that ‘Dreaming is not an action’ is a logical remark in the way that ‘Bachelors are unmarried’ is a logical remark. “It is not something that we notice about dreams, that they happen, as it is not something we notice about bachelors that they have no wives. It is part of the concept of a dream; and no matter what characteristics a phenomenon shares with a dream, such as being experienced while asleep, if it does not happen it is for that reason alone not a dream.” (p. 534)

C'est Paul Vignaux le grand médiéviste de la Sorbonne, qui a préfacé le livre du P. Camille Bérubé, O.F.M., Cap., l'un de ses collègues de l'Institut d'Études Médiévales de Montréal, sur La Connaissance de l'individuel au Moyen Age. Tout en présentant l'ouvrage aux lecteurs non médiévistes, il se plaît à louer l'érudition, le sens de la synthèse et la liberté d'esprit du chercheur patient et objectif qu'est le P. Bérubé.

Sans être nous-même médiéviste, il nous semble qu'il s'agit ici d'une œuvre qui fait honneur à la recherche canadienne en ce domaine. Nous l'avons lu, en tout cas, comme on lit un roman d'aventures, en nous demandant dès le début et en souhaitant de plus en plus vivement, au fur et à mesure que nous progressions, ce que la suite allait nous révéler.

Cet ouvrage, qui est dédié à Karl Jaspers et préfacè par le maître, est une nouvelle édition de l'œuvre parue il y a vingt ans. Son auteur nous affirme aujourd'hui (p. 222): « J'aurais dû, peut-être, retoucher ce livre. J'y ai pensé mais je ne l'ai pas pu ». Il est sans doute très difficile de récrire une œuvre de jeunesse.

Le propos de ce livre est relativement simple; il veut montrer que la philosophic est une illusion, parce qu'elle repose sur une décision du sujet qui se cherche à travers les objets qu'il examine. Il y aurait, à la base de l'entreprise philosophique une « duplicité fondamentale » (p. 57), de telle sorte que cette discipline ne peut aller que d'échec en échec. « Pour la clarté même de l'intelligence, il faut qu'elle sache oû ses preuves sont impossibles. Or, l'histoire me semble avoir démontré que la philosophic n'atteint pas à l'évidence scientifique » (p. 56).

As philosophers speak, they think that there are things whicht they can see and speak about as philosophers. But what are these things? And what is the general character of the philosopher's statements? How can we find out whether they are true? If, as is widely agreed, the philosopher does not rely on empirical research, in which direction ought we to look for the evidence to support philosophieal statements? Husserl's transcendental-phenomenological reduction, we propose to show, can best be understood as an attempt to indicate the nature and direction of the specifically philosophieal concern. The reduction, as he understood it, determines the domain of philosophieal research, the character of philosophical statements, and the direction in which we can look for evidence to support such statements. In this paper we shall concentrate on the Ideas, the work which Husserl published in 1913 as a general introduction to phenomenology.

Mr Barber has admirably understood what he calls my first argument. Unfortunately, he thinks it does not succeed in demonstrating that the phenomenological argument Jbr the existence of bare particulars is circular. Or, rather, he thinks t he phenomeno-logical argument need not be taken in the way I suggested but can be put so that my argument will not apply to it. His attempted phenomenological rejuvenation of the putative acquaintance with bare particulars will not do. Indeed, it can be used to illustrate one of the points I tried to make in my original paper.

On chercherait en vain dans les œuvres de saint Thomas un exposé systématique de sa philosophic politique. Vouloir en composer un est done une entreprise difficile qui suppose une longue fréquentation des écrits du Docteur et une réelle aptitude à saisir sa pensée aussi compréhensive que nuancée. Parce qu'il remplissait ces conditions, le Père Lachance a réussi à nous dormer, dès 1939, un ouvrage d'envergure, sous un titre propre à retenir l'attention. Le contenu de ces deux volumes ne la méritait pas moins, et sa valeur fut soulignée par les quelques recenseurs qui purent en prendre connaissance. La première édition fut rapidement épuisée, bien que la guerre de 1939 en ait retardé la diffusion.

La morale d'Aristote a suscité ces dernières années des ouvrages d'envergure: les deux tomes d'Introduction, traduction et commentaire de l'Ethique à Nicomaque par les Pères Gauthier et Jolif (1959), le volume de Pierre Aubenque sur La Prudence chez Aristote (1963), puis cette thèse que M. Vanier présentait à l'Institut Catholique de Paris en 1962 et qu'il publie maintenant dans un texte « revu », « amélioré ». Des ouvrages qui se suivent mais ne se ressemblent pas. II n'est pas question de les confronter; indiquons seulement qu'aux aspects historique et philologique, à l'étude des sources, du milieu et du langage, M. Vanier préfère l'approfondissement des principes qui inspirent la morale du Philosophe, cet approfondissement dût-il conduire à des vérités que le texte même n'explicite pas pourvu que la doctrine les implique dans sa synthèse et sa cohérence (pp. 18-21).
