We give a classification of irreducible admissible modulo $p$ representations of a split$p$-adic reductive group in terms of supersingular representations. This is a generalization of a theorem of Herzig.

We give a necessary and sufficient condition in order for a hyperplane arrangement to be of Torelli type, namely that it is recovered as the set of unstable hyperplanes of its Dolgachev sheaf of logarithmic differentials. Decompositions and semistability of non-Torelli arrangements are investigated.

The well-known fiber dimension theorem in algebraic geometry says that for every morphism f:X→Y of integral schemes of finite type the dimension of every fiber of f is at least dim X−dim Y. This has recently been generalized by Brosnan, Reichstein and Vistoli to certain morphisms of algebraic stacks f:𝒳→𝒴, where the usual dimension is replaced by essential dimension. We will prove a general version for morphisms of categories fibered in groupoids. Moreover, we will prove a variant of this theorem, where essential dimension and canonical dimension are linked. These results let us relate essential dimension to canonical dimension of algebraic groups. In particular, using the recent computation of the essential dimension of algebraic tori by MacDonald, Meyer, Reichstein and the author, we establish a lower bound on the canonical dimension of algebraic tori.

Let $N/ F$ be an odd-degree Galois extension of number fields with Galois group $G$ and rings of integers ${\mathfrak{O}}_{N} $ and ${\mathfrak{O}}_{F} = \mathfrak{O}$. Let $ \mathcal{A} $ be the unique fractional ${\mathfrak{O}}_{N} $-ideal with square equal to the inverse different of $N/ F$. B. Erez showed that $ \mathcal{A} $ is a locally free $\mathfrak{O}[G] $-module if and only if $N/ F$ is a so-called weakly ramified extension. Although a number of results have been proved regarding the freeness of $ \mathcal{A} $ as a $ \mathbb{Z} [G] $-module, the question remains open. In this paper we prove that $ \mathcal{A} $ is free as a $ \mathbb{Z} [G] $-module provided that $N/ F$ is weakly ramified and under the hypothesis that for every prime $\wp $ of $\mathfrak{O}$ which ramifies wildly in $N/ F$, the decomposition group is abelian, the ramification group is cyclic and $\wp $ is unramified in $F/ \mathbb{Q} $. We make crucial use of a construction due to the first author which uses Dwork’s exponential power series to describe self-dual integral normal bases in Lubin–Tate extensions of local fields. This yields a new and striking relationship between the local norm-resolvent and the Galois Gauss sum involved. Our results generalise work of the second author concerning the case of base field $ \mathbb{Q} $.

The main result of this paper states that if $k$ is a field of characteristic $p\gt 0$ and $A/ k$ is a central simple algebra of index $d= {p}^{n} $ and exponent ${p}^{e} $, then $A$ is split by a purely inseparable extension of $k$ of the form $k( \sqrt[{p}^{e} ]{{a}_{i} }, i= 1, \ldots , d- 1)$. Combining this result with a theorem of Albert (for which we include a new proof), we get that any such algebra is Brauer equivalent to the tensor product of at most $d- 1$ cyclic algebras of degree ${p}^{e} $. This gives a drastic improvement upon previously known upper bounds.

Let ${\rm F}$ be a non-Archimedean locally compact field of residue characteristic $p$, let ${\rm D}$ be a finite-dimensional central division ${\rm F}$-algebra and let ${\rm R}$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from $p$. We define banal irreducible ${\rm R}$-representations of the group ${\rm G}={\rm GL}_{m}({\rm D})$. This notion involves a condition on the cuspidal support of the representation depending on the characteristic of ${\rm R}$. When this characteristic is banal with respect to ${\rm G}$, in particular when ${\rm R}$ is the field of complex numbers, any irreducible ${\rm R}$-representation of ${\rm G}$ is banal. In this article, we give a classification of all banal irreducible ${\rm R}$-representations of ${\rm G}$ in terms of certain multisegments, called banal. When ${\rm R}$ is the field of complex numbers, our method provides a new proof, entirely local, of Tadić’s classification of irreducible complex smooth representations of ${\rm G}$.

We prove that the space of smooth rational curves of degree $e$ on a general complete intersection of multidegree $(d_1, \ldots , d_m)$ in $\mathbb {P}^n$ is irreducible of the expected dimension if $\sum _{i=1}^m d_i \lt (2n+m+1)/3$ and $n$ is sufficiently large. This generalizes a result of Harris, Roth and Starr [Rational curves on hypersurfaces of low degree, J. Reine Angew. Math. 571 (2004), 73–106], and is achieved by proving that the space of conics passing through any point of a general complete intersection has constant dimension if $\sum _{i=1}^m d_i$ is small compared to $n$.

The saturation theorem of Knutson and Tao concerns the nonvanishing of Littlewood–Richardson coefficients. In combination with work of Klyachko, it implies Horn’s conjecture about eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices. This eigenvalue problem has a generalization to majorized sums of Hermitian matrices, due to S. Friedland. We further illustrate the common features between these two eigenvalue problems and their connection to Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Our main result gives a Schubert calculus interpretation of Friedland’s problem, via equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians. In particular, we prove a saturation theorem for this setting. Our arguments employ the aforementioned work together with recent work of H. Thomas and A. Yong.

We show that the zero locus of an admissible normal function on a smooth complex algebraic variety is algebraic. In Part II of the paper, which is an appendix, we compute the Tannakian Galois group of the category of one-variable admissible real nilpotent orbits with split limit. We then use the answer to recover an unpublished theorem of Deligne, which characterizes the ${\mathrm{sl} }_{2} $-splitting of a real mixed Hodge structure.

We prove packing stability for rational symplectic manifolds. This will rely on a general symplectic embedding result for ellipsoids which assumes only that there is no volume obstruction and that the domain is sufficiently thin relative to the target. We also obtain easily computable bounds for the Embedded Contact Homology capacities which are sufficient to imply the existence of some symplectic volume filling embeddings in dimension 4.

The idea that the cohomology of finite groups might be fruitfully approached via the cohomology of ambient semisimple algebraic groups was first shown to be viable in the papers [E. Cline, B. Parshall, and L. Scott, Cohomology of finite groups of Lie type, I, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 45 (1975), 169–191] and [E. Cline, B. Parshall, L. Scott and W. van der Kallen, Rational and generic cohomology, Invent. Math. 39 (1977), 143–163]. The second paper introduced, through a limiting process, the notion of generic cohomology, as an intermediary between finite Chevalley group and algebraic group cohomology. The present paper shows that, for irreducible modules as coefficients, the limits can be eliminated in all but finitely many cases. These exceptional cases depend only on the root system and cohomological degree. In fact, we show that, for sufficiently large $r$, depending only on the root system and $m$, and not on the prime $p$ or the irreducible module $L$, there are isomorphisms ${\mathrm{H} }^{m} (G({p}^{r} ), L)\cong {\mathrm{H} }^{m} (G({p}^{r} ), {L}^{\prime } )\cong { \mathrm{H} }_{\mathrm{gen} }^{m} (G, {L}^{\prime } )\cong {\mathrm{H} }^{m} (G, {L}^{\prime } )$, where the subscript ‘gen’ refers to generic cohomology and ${L}^{\prime } $ is a constructibly determined irreducible ‘shift’ of the (arbitrary) irreducible module $L$ for the finite Chevalley group $G({p}^{r} )$. By a famous theorem of Steinberg, both $L$ and ${L}^{\prime } $ extend to irreducible modules for the ambient algebraic group $G$ with ${p}^{r} $-restricted highest weights. This leads to the notion of a module or weight being ‘shifted $m$-generic’, and thus to the title of this paper. Our approach is based on questions raised by the third author in [D. I. Stewart, The second cohomology of simple ${\mathrm{SL} }_{3} $-modules, Comm. Algebra 40 (2012), 4702–4716], which we answer here in the cohomology cases. We obtain many additional results, often with formulations in the more general context of ${ \mathrm{Ext} }_{G({p}^{r} )}^{m} $ with irreducible coefficients.

We extend our previous work in collaboration with Ngô Bao Châu and give a fixed point formula for the elliptic part of moduli spaces of $G$-shtukas with arbitrary modifications. Our formula is similar to the fixed point formula of Kottwitz for certain Shimura varieties. Our method is inspired by that of Kottwitz and simpler than that of Lafforgue for the fixed point formula of the moduli space of Drinfeld $\text{GL} (r)$-shtukas.

We derive some combinatorial consequences from the positivity of Donaldson–Thomas invariants for symmetric quivers conjectured by Kontsevich and Soibelman and proved recently by Efimov. These results are used to prove the Kac conjecture for quivers having at least one loop at every vertex.

A central problem in liaison theory is to decide whether every arithmetically Cohen–Macaulay subscheme of projective $n$-space can be linked by a finite number of arithmetically Gorenstein schemes to a complete intersection. We show that this can indeed be achieved if the given scheme is also generically Gorenstein and we allow the links to take place in an $(n+ 1)$-dimensional projective space. For example, this result applies to all reduced arithmetically Cohen–Macaulay subschemes. We also show that every union of fat points in projective 3-space can be linked in the same space to a union of simple points in finitely many steps, and hence to a complete intersection in projective 4-space.
