We combine the geometric realization of principal series representations on partially holomorphic cohomology spaces, with the Bott–Borel–Weil theorem for direct limits of compact Lie groups, obtaining limits of principal series representations for direct limits of real reductive Lie groups. We introduce the notion of weakly parabolic direct limits and relate it to the conditions that the limit representations are norm-preserving representations on a Banach space or unitary representations on a Hilbert space. We specialize the results to diagonal embedding direct limit groups. Finally we discuss the possibilities of extending the results to limits of tempered series other than the principal series.

Let $G$ be an adjoint simple algebraic group of inner type. We express the Chow motive (with integral coefficients) of an anisotropic projective $G$-homogeneous variety in terms of motives of simpler $G$-homogeneous varieties, namely, those that correspond to maximal parabolic subgroups of $G$. We decompose the motive of a generalized Severi–Brauer variety $\mathrm{SB}_2(A)$ of a division algebra $A$ of degree 5 into a direct sum of twisted motives of the Severi–Brauer variety $\mathrm{SB}(B)$ of a division algebra $B$ Brauer-equivalent to the tensor square $A^{\otimes 2}$. As an application we provide another counter-example to the uniqueness of a direct sum decomposition in the category of motives with integral coefficients.

Let $p$ and $\ell$ be distinct primes, and let $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$ be an orthogonal or symplectic representation of the absolute Galois group of an $\ell$-adic field over a finite field of characteristic $p$. We define and study a liftable deformation condition of lifts of $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$ ‘ramified no worse than $\overline{\unicode[STIX]{x1D70C}}$’, generalizing the minimally ramified deformation condition for $\operatorname{GL}_{n}$ studied in Clozel et al. [Automorphy for some$l$-adic lifts of automorphic mod$l$Galois representations, Publ. Math. Inst. Hautes Études Sci. 108 (2008), 1–181; MR 2470687 (2010j:11082)]. The key insight is to restrict to deformations where an associated unipotent element does not change type when deforming. This requires an understanding of nilpotent orbits and centralizers of nilpotent elements in the relative situation, not just over fields.

We establish one direction of a conjecture by Lakshmibai and Sandhya which describes combinatorially the singular locus of a Schubert variety. We prove that the conjectured singular locus is contained in the singular locus.

Let $Q$ be a finite quiver without oriented cycles, and let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. The main result in this paper is that there is a natural bijection between the elements in the associated Weyl group $W_{Q}$ and the cofinite additive quotient closed subcategories of the category of finite dimensional right modules over $kQ$. We prove this correspondence by linking these subcategories to certain ideals in the preprojective algebra associated to $Q$, which are also indexed by elements of $W_{Q}$.

We generalize our previous method on the subconvexity problem for $\text{GL}_{2}\times \text{GL}_{1}$ with cuspidal representations to Eisenstein series, and deduce a Burgess-like subconvex bound for Hecke characters, that is, the bound $|L(1/2,\unicode[STIX]{x1D712})|\ll _{\mathbf{F},\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}}\mathbf{C}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D712})^{1/4-(1-2\unicode[STIX]{x1D703})/16+\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}}$ for varying Hecke characters $\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}$ over a number field $\mathbf{F}$ with analytic conductor $\mathbf{C}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D712})$. As a main tool, we apply the extended theory of regularized integrals due to Zagier developed in a previous paper to obtain the relevant triple product formulas of Eisenstein series.

A foliation on a non-singular projective variety is algebraically integrable if all leaves are algebraic subvarieties. A non-singular hypersurface X in a non-singular projective variety M equipped with a symplectic form has a naturally defined foliation, called the characteristic foliation on X. We show that if X is of general type and dim M≥4, then the characteristic foliation on X cannot be algebraically integrable. This is a consequence of a more general result on Iitaka dimensions of certain invertible sheaves associated with algebraically integrable foliations by curves. The latter is proved using the positivity of direct image sheaves associated to families of curves.

In this paper we establish Riemann–Roch and Lefschtez–Riemann–Roch theorems for arbitrary proper maps of finite cohomological dimension between algebraic stacks in the sense of Artin. The Riemann–Roch theorem is established as a natural transformation between the G-theory of algebraic stacks and topological G-theory for stacks: we define the latter as the localization of G-theory by topological K-homology. The Lefschtez–Riemann–Roch is an extension of this including the action of a torus for Deligne–Mumford stacks. This generalizes the corresponding Riemann–Roch theorem (Lefschetz–Riemann–Roch theorem) for proper maps between schemes (that are also equivariant for the action of a torus, respectively) making use of some fundamental results due to Vistoli and Toen. A key result established here is that topological G-theory (as well as rational G-theory) has cohomological descent on the isovariant étale site of an algebraic stack. This extends cohomological descent for topological G-theory on schemes as proved by Thomason.

The aim of this paper is to give an application of p-adic Hodge theory to stringy Hodge numbers introduced by V. Batyrev for a mathematical formulation of mirror symmetry. Since the stringy Hodge numbers of an algebraic variety are defined by choosing a resolution of singularities, the well-definedness is not clear from the definition. We give a proof of the well-definedness by using arithmetic techniques such as p-adic integration and p-adic Hodge theory. Note that another proof of the well-definedness was obtained by V. Batyrev himself by motivic integration.

Let ℓ be a prime number. It is not known whether every finite ℓ-group of rank n≥1 can be realized as a Galois group over with no more than n ramified primes. We prove that this can be done for the (minimal) family of finite ℓ-groups which contains all the cyclic groups of ℓ-power order and is closed under direct products, (regular) wreath products and rank-preserving homomorphic images. This family contains the Sylow ℓ-subgroups of the symmetric groups and of the classical groups over finite fields of characteristic not ℓ. On the other hand, it does not contain all finite ℓ-groups.

In this paper we describe the intersections between the balls of maximal symplectic packings of . This analysis shows the existence of singular points for maximal packings of by more than three equal balls. It also yields a construction of a class of very regular examples of maximal packings by five balls.

The Jacobi identity is the key relation in the definition of a Lie algebra. In the last decade, it has also appeared at the heart of the theory of finite type invariants of knots, links and 3-manifolds (and is there called the IHX relation). In addition, this relation was recently found to arise naturally in a theory of embedding obstructions for 2-spheres in 4-manifolds in terms of Whitney towers. This paper contains the first proof of the four-dimensional version of the Jacobi identity. We also expose the underlying topological unity between the three- and four-dimensional IHX relations, deriving from a beautiful picture of the Borromean rings embedded on the boundary of an unknotted genus 3 handlebody in 3-space. This picture is most naturally related to knot and 3-manifold invariants via the theory of grope cobordisms.

We prove a constructive existence theorem for abelian envelopes of non-abelian monoidal categories. This establishes a new tool for the construction of tensor categories. As an example we obtain new proofs for the existence of several universal tensor categories as conjectured by Deligne. Another example constructs interesting tensor categories in positive characteristic via tilting modules for ${\rm SL}_2$.

The quotient of a real analytic manifold by a properly discontinuous group action is, in general, only a semianalytic variety. We study the boundary of such a quotient, i.e., the set of points at which the quotient is not analytic. We apply the results to the moduli space M$_g/R$ of nonsingular real algebraic curves of genus g (g[les ]2). This moduli space has a natural structure of a semianalytic variety. We determine the dimension of the boundary of any connected component of M$_g/R$. It turns out that every connected component has a nonempty boundary. In particular, no connected component of M$_g/R$is real analytic. We conclude that M$_g/R$ is not a real analytic variety.

For each del Pezzo surface $S$ with du Val singularities, we determine whether it admits a $(-K_{S})$-polar cylinder or not. If it allows one, then we present an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $D$ that is $\mathbb{Q}$-linearly equivalent to $-K_{S}$ and such that the open set $S\setminus \text{Supp}(D)$ is a cylinder. As a corollary, we classify all the del Pezzo surfaces with du Val singularities that admit non-trivial $\mathbb{G}_{a}$-actions on their affine cones defined by their anticanonical divisors.

We recover the Newton diagram (modulo a natural ambiguity) from the link for any surface hypersurface singularity with non-degenerate Newton principal part whose link is a rational homology sphere. As a corollary, we show that the link determines the embedded topological type, the Milnor fibration, and the multiplicity of such a germ. This proves (an even stronger version of) Zariski's conjecture about the multiplicity for such a singularity.

Building on the concept of pretentious multiplicative functions, we give a new and largely elementary proof of the best result known on the counting function of primes in arithmetic progressions.

In this article we prove that Kontsevich’s category NCnum(k)F of noncommutative numerical motives is equivalent to the one constructed by the authors in [Marcolli and Tabuada, Noncommutative motives, numerical equivalence, and semisimplicity, Amer. J. Math., to appear, available at arXiv:1105.2950]. As a consequence, we conclude that NCnum(k)F is abelian semi-simple as conjectured by Kontsevich.

We characterize the $(1,1)$ knots in the 3-sphere and lens spaces that admit non-trivial L-space surgeries. As a corollary, 1-bridge braids in these manifolds admit non-trivial L-space surgeries. We also recover a characterization of the Berge manifold among 1-bridge braid exteriors.

We prove that on separated algebraic surfaces every coherent sheaf is a quotient of a locally free sheaf. This class contains many schemes that are neither normal, reduced, quasiprojective nor embeddable into toric varieties. Our methods extend to arbitrary two-dimensional schemes that are proper over an excellent ring.
