Let $G$ a compact group of isometries of a closed riemannian manifold $(X,m)$. Sunada proved that if $\Gamma_1$ and $\Gamma_2$ are two finite almost-conjugated subgroups of $G$, then $\Gamma_1\setminus X,m)$ and $\Gamma_2\setminus X,m)$ are isospectral. We prove that if $G$ is finite, there exists an open dense set in the set of $G$-invariant metrics for which the converse of this resukt is true. If $G$ is infinite, the situations is more complicated and we obtain some partial results.

Using the Fiedler–Polyak–Viro Gauß diagram formulae we study the Vassiliev invariants of degree 2 and 3 on almost positive knots. As a consequence we show that the number of almost positive knots of a given genus or unknotting number grows polynomially in the crossing number, and also recover and extend, inter alia to their untwisted Whitehead doubles, previous results on the polynomials and signatures of such knots. In particular, we prove that there are no achiral almost positive knots and classify all almost positive diagrams of the unknot. We give an application to contact geometry (Legendrian knots) and property P.

In this paper it is proved that the index of a Fredholm operator between $p$-adic Banach spaces is preserved under compact perturbations. A case of special interest is provided when the ground field is nonspherically complete. In this case the classical techniques are no longer valid and the relation between the kernels of a Fredholm operator and that of a small compact perturbation turn out to be in general much richer than in the complex context.

Let $G$ be an algebraic real reductive group and $Z$ a real spherical $G$-variety, that is, it admits an open orbit for a minimal parabolic subgroup $P$. We prove a local structure theorem for $Z$. In the simplest case where $Z$ is homogeneous, the theorem provides an isomorphism of the open $P$-orbit with a bundle $Q\times _{L}S$. Here $Q$ is a parabolic subgroup with Levi decomposition $L\ltimes U$, and $S$ is a homogeneous space for a quotient $D=L/L_{n}$ of $L$, where $L_{n}\subseteq L$ is normal, such that $D$ is compact modulo center.

Gallagher’s theorem is a sharpening and extension of the Littlewood conjecture that holds for almost all tuples of real numbers. We provide a fibre refinement, solving a problem posed by Beresnevich, Haynes and Velani in 2015. Hitherto, this was only known on the plane, as previous approaches relied heavily on the theory of continued fractions. Using reduced successive minima in lieu of continued fractions, we develop the structural theory of Bohr sets of arbitrary rank, in the context of diophantine approximation. In addition, we generalise the theory and result to the inhomogeneous setting. To deal with this inhomogeneity, we employ diophantine transference inequalities in lieu of the three distance theorem.

We prove that the tautological ring of ${\mathcal{M}}_{2,n}^{\mathsf{ct}}$, the moduli space of $n$-pointed genus two curves of compact type, does not have Poincaré duality for any $n\geqslant 8$. This result is obtained via a more general study of the cohomology groups of ${\mathcal{M}}_{2,n}^{\mathsf{ct}}$. We explain how the cohomology can be decomposed into pieces corresponding to different local systems and how the tautological cohomology can be identified within this decomposition. Our results allow the computation of $H^{k}({\mathcal{M}}_{2,n}^{\mathsf{ct}})$ for any $k$ and $n$ considered both as $\mathbb{S}_{n}$-representation and as mixed Hodge structure/$\ell$-adic Galois representation considered up to semi-simplification. A consequence of our results is also that all even cohomology of $\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{2,n}$ is tautological for $n<20$, and that the tautological ring of $\overline{{\mathcal{M}}}_{2,n}$ fails to have Poincaré duality for all $n\geqslant 20$. This improves and simplifies results of the author and Orsola Tommasi.

In this paper, we prove some one level density results for the low-lying zeros of families of L-functions. More specifically, the families under consideration are that of L-functions of holomorphic Hecke eigenforms of level 1 and weight k twisted with quadratic Dirichlet characters and that of cubic and quartic Dirichlet L-functions.

In this paper we prove that a smooth family of canonically polarized manifolds parametrized by a special (in the sense of Campana) quasi-projective variety is isotrivial.

If $K$ is a simplicial complex on $m$ vertices, the flagification of $K$ is the minimal flag complex $K^{f}$ on the same vertex set that contains $K$. Letting $L$ be the set of vertices, there is a sequence of simplicial inclusions $L\stackrel{}{\longrightarrow }K\stackrel{}{\longrightarrow }K^{f}$. This induces a sequence of maps of polyhedral products $(\text{}\underline{X},\text{}\underline{A})^{L}\stackrel{g}{\longrightarrow }(\text{}\underline{X},\text{}\underline{A})^{K}\stackrel{f}{\longrightarrow }(\text{}\underline{X},\text{}\underline{A})^{K^{f}}$. We show that $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}f$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}f\circ \unicode[STIX]{x1D6FA}g$ have right homotopy inverses and draw consequences. For a flag complex $K$ the polyhedral product of the form $(\text{}\underline{CY},\text{}\underline{Y})^{K}$ is a co-$H$-space if and only if the 1-skeleton of $K$ is a chordal graph, and we deduce that the maps $f$ and $f\circ g$ have right homotopy inverses in this case.

We study the relative Donaldson–Thomas theory of 𝒜n×P1, where 𝒜n is the surface resolution of type An singularity. The action of divisor operators in the theory is expressed in terms of operators of the affine algebra on Fock space. Assuming a nondegeneracy conjecture, this gives a complete solution for the theory. The results complete the comparison of this theory with the Gromov–Witten theory of 𝒜n×P1 and the quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme of points on 𝒜n.

Let f1,…,fg∈ℂ(z) be rational functions, let Φ=(f1,…,fg) denote their coordinate-wise action on (ℙ1)g, let V ⊂(ℙ1)g be a proper subvariety, and let P be a point in (ℙ1)g(ℂ). We show that if 𝒮={n≥0:Φn(P)∈V (ℂ)} does not contain any infinite arithmetic progressions, then 𝒮 must be a very sparse set of integers. In particular, for any k and any sufficiently large N, the number of n≤N such that Φn(P)∈V (ℂ) is less than log kN, where log k denotes the kth iterate of the log function. This result can be interpreted as an analogue of the gap principle of Davenport–Roth and Mumford.

It is known that Siegel's theorem on integral points is effective for Galois coverings of the projective line. In this paper we obtain a quantitative version of this result, giving an explicit upper bound for the heights of S-integral K-rational points in terms of the number field K, the set of places S and the defining equation of the curve. Our main tools are Baker's theory of linear forms in logarithms and the quantitative Eisenstein theorem due to Schmidt, Dwork and van der Poorten.

This paper proves two results on the field of rationality $\mathbb{Q}({\it\pi})$ for an automorphic representation ${\it\pi}$, which is the subfield of $\mathbb{C}$ fixed under the subgroup of $\text{Aut}(\mathbb{C})$ stabilizing the isomorphism class of the finite part of ${\it\pi}$. For general linear groups and classical groups, our first main result is the finiteness of the set of discrete automorphic representations ${\it\pi}$ such that ${\it\pi}$ is unramified away from a fixed finite set of places, ${\it\pi}_{\infty }$ has a fixed infinitesimal character, and $[\mathbb{Q}({\it\pi}):\mathbb{Q}]$ is bounded. The second main result is that for classical groups, $[\mathbb{Q}({\it\pi}):\mathbb{Q}]$ grows to infinity in a family of automorphic representations in level aspect whose infinite components are discrete series in a fixed $L$-packet under mild conditions.

In this work, we set up a theory of p-adic modular forms over Shimura curves over totally real fields which allows us to consider also non-integral weights. In particular, we define an analogue of the sheaves of kth invariant differentials over the Shimura curves we are interested in, for any p-adic character. In this way, we are able to introduce the notion of overconvergent modular form of any p-adic weight. Moreover, our sheaves can be put in p-adic families over a suitable rigid analytic space, that parametrizes the weights. Finally, we define Hecke operators, including the U operator, that acts compactly on the space of overconvergent modular forms. We also construct the eigencurve.

We study the Rankin–Selberg integral for a pair of representations of ${\rm SO}_{2l}\times {\rm GL}_{n}$, where ${\rm SO}_{2l}$ is defined over a local non-Archimedean field and is either split or quasi-split. The integrals span a fractional ideal, and its unique generator, which contains any pole which appears in the integrals, is called the greatest common divisor (gcd) of the integrals. We describe the properties of the gcd and establish upper and lower bounds for the poles. In the tempered case we can relate it to the $L$-function of the representations defined by Shahidi. Results of this work may lead to a gcd definition for the $L$-function.

We develop the metric theory of Diophantine approximation on homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups and prove results analogous to the classical Khintchine and Jarník theorems. In full generality our results establish simultaneous Diophantine approximation with respect to several completions, and Diophantine approximation over general number fields using $\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}S$-algebraic integers. In several important examples, the metric results we obtain are optimal. The proof uses quantitative equidistribution properties of suitable averaging operators, which are derived from spectral bounds in automorphic representations.

Let d be the degree of an algebraic one-dimensional foliation $\mathcal F$ on the complex projective space ${\mathbb P}_n$ (i.e. the degree of the variety of tangencies of the foliation with a generic hyperplane). Let $\Gamma$ be an algebraic solution of degree $\delta$, and geometrical genus g. We prove, in particular, the inequality $(d-1)\delta+2-2g\geq {\mathcal B}(\Gamma)$, where ${\mathcal B}(\Gamma)$ denotes the total number of locally irreducible branches through singular points of $\Gamma$ when $\Gamma$ has singularities, and ${\mathcal B}(\Gamma)=1$ (instead of 0) when $\Gamma$ is smooth. Equivalently, when $\Gamma=\bigcap_{\lambda=1}^{n-1} S_\lambda$ is the complete intersection of n - 1 algebraic hypersurfaces $S_\lambda$, we get $(d+n-\sum_{\lambda=1}^{n-1}\delta_\lambda)\delta \geq {\mathcal B}(\Gamma)-{\mathcal E}(\Gamma)$, where $\delta_\lambda$ denotes the degree of $S_\lambda$ and ${\mathcal E}(\Gamma)=2-2g+(\sum_\lambda\delta_\lambda-(n+1))\delta$ the correction term in the genus formula. These results are also refined when $\Gamma$ is reducible.

For a Coxeter system and a representation $V$ of this Coxeter system, Soergel defined a category which is now called the category of Soergel bimodules and proved that this gives a categorification of the Hecke algebra when $V$ is reflection faithful. Elias and Williamson defined another category when $V$ is not reflection faithful and proved that this category is equivalent to the category of Soergel bimodules when $V$ is reflection faithful. Moreover, they proved the categorification theorem for their category with fewer assumptions on $V$. In this paper, we give a bimodule description of the Elias–Williamson category and re-prove the categorification theorem.

Let $G$ be an adjoint simple algebraic group of inner type. We express the Chow motive (with integral coefficients) of an anisotropic projective $G$-homogeneous variety in terms of motives of simpler $G$-homogeneous varieties, namely, those that correspond to maximal parabolic subgroups of $G$. We decompose the motive of a generalized Severi–Brauer variety $\mathrm{SB}_2(A)$ of a division algebra $A$ of degree 5 into a direct sum of twisted motives of the Severi–Brauer variety $\mathrm{SB}(B)$ of a division algebra $B$ Brauer-equivalent to the tensor square $A^{\otimes 2}$. As an application we provide another counter-example to the uniqueness of a direct sum decomposition in the category of motives with integral coefficients.

We combine the geometric realization of principal series representations on partially holomorphic cohomology spaces, with the Bott–Borel–Weil theorem for direct limits of compact Lie groups, obtaining limits of principal series representations for direct limits of real reductive Lie groups. We introduce the notion of weakly parabolic direct limits and relate it to the conditions that the limit representations are norm-preserving representations on a Banach space or unitary representations on a Hilbert space. We specialize the results to diagonal embedding direct limit groups. Finally we discuss the possibilities of extending the results to limits of tempered series other than the principal series.
