Let $A$ be a complete local ring with a coefficient field $k$ of characteristic zero, and let $Y$ be its spectrum. The de Rham homology and cohomology of $Y$ have been defined by R. Hartshorne using a choice of surjection $R\rightarrow A$ where $R$ is a complete regular local $k$-algebra: the resulting objects are independent of the chosen surjection. We prove that the Hodge–de Rham spectral sequences abutting to the de Rham homology and cohomology of $Y$, beginning with their $E_{2}$-terms, are independent of the chosen surjection (up to a degree shift in the homology case) and consist of finite-dimensional $k$-spaces. These $E_{2}$-terms therefore provide invariants of $A$ analogous to the Lyubeznik numbers. As part of our proofs we develop a theory of Matlis duality in relation to ${\mathcal{D}}$-modules that is of independent interest. Some of the highlights of this theory are that if $R$ is a complete regular local ring containing $k$ and ${\mathcal{D}}={\mathcal{D}}(R,k)$ is the ring of $k$-linear differential operators on $R$, then the Matlis dual $D(M)$ of any left ${\mathcal{D}}$-module $M$ can again be given a structure of left ${\mathcal{D}}$-module, and if $M$ is a holonomic ${\mathcal{D}}$-module, then the de Rham cohomology spaces of $D(M)$ are $k$-dual to those of $M$.

We construct an interesting family of connected graded domains of Gel’fand–Kirillov dimension 4, and show that the general member of this family is noetherian. The algebras we construct are Koszul and have global dimension 4. They fail to be Artin–Schelter Gorenstein, however, showing that a theorem of Zhang and Stephenson for dimension 3 algebras does not extend to dimension 4. The Auslander–Buchsbaum formula also fails to hold for these algebras. The algebras we construct are birational to ℙ2, and their existence disproves a conjecture of the first author and Stafford. The algebras can be obtained as global sections of a certain quasicoherent graded sheaf on ℙ1×ℙ1, and our key technique is to work with this sheaf. In contrast to all previously known examples of birationally commutative graded domains, the graded pieces of the sheaf fail to be ample in the sense of Van den Bergh. Our results thus require significantly new techniques.

For ${\mathcal{C}}$ a factorisable and pivotal finite tensor category over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero we show:

1. (1) ${\mathcal{C}}$ always contains a simple projective object;

2. (2) if ${\mathcal{C}}$ is in addition ribbon, the internal characters of projective modules span a submodule for the projective $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$-action;

3. (3) the action of the Grothendieck ring of ${\mathcal{C}}$ on the span of internal characters of projective objects can be diagonalised;

4. (4) the linearised Grothendieck ring of ${\mathcal{C}}$ is semisimple if and only if ${\mathcal{C}}$ is semisimple.

Results (1)–(3) remain true in positive characteristic under an extra assumption. Result (1) implies that the tensor ideal of projective objects in ${\mathcal{C}}$ carries a unique-up-to-scalars modified trace function. We express the modified trace of open Hopf links coloured by projectives in terms of $S$-matrix elements. Furthermore, we give a Verlinde-like formula for the decomposition of tensor products of projective objects which uses only the modular $S$-transformation restricted to internal characters of projective objects. We compute the modified trace in the example of symplectic fermion categories, and we illustrate how the Verlinde-like formula for projective objects can be applied there.

We show that if $(M,\otimes,I)$ is a monoidal model category then $\mathbb{R}\underline{\rm End}_{M}(I)$ is a (weak) 2-monoid in sSet. This applies in particular when M is the category of A-bimodules over a simplicial monoid A: the derived endomorphisms of A then form its Hochschild cohomology, which therefore becomes a simplicial 2-monoid.

Motohashi established an explicit identity between the fourth moment of the Riemann zeta function weighted by some test function and a spectral cubic moment of automorphic $L$-functions. By an entirely different method, we prove a generalization of this formula to a fourth moment of Dirichlet $L$-functions modulo $q$ weighted by a non-archimedean test function. This establishes a new reciprocity formula. As an application, we obtain sharp upper bounds for the fourth moment twisted by the square of a Dirichlet polynomial of length $q^{1/4}$. An auxiliary result of independent interest is a sharp upper bound for a certain sixth moment for automorphic $L$-functions, which we also use to improve the best known subconvexity bounds for automorphic $L$-functions in the level aspect.

A special linear Grassmann variety $\text{SGr}(k,n)$ is the complement to the zero section of the determinant of the tautological vector bundle over $\text{Gr}(k,n)$. For an $SL$-oriented representable ring cohomology theory $A^{\ast }(-)$ with invertible stable Hopf map ${\it\eta}$, including Witt groups and $\text{MSL}_{{\it\eta}}^{\ast ,\ast }$, we have $A^{\ast }(\text{SGr}(2,2n+1))\cong A^{\ast }(pt)[e]/(e^{2n})$, and $A^{\ast }(\text{SGr}(k,n))$ is a truncated polynomial algebra over $A^{\ast }(pt)$ whenever $k(n-k)$ is even. A splitting principle for such theories is established. Using the computations for the special linear Grassmann varieties, we obtain a description of $A^{\ast }(\text{BSL}_{n})$ in terms of homogeneous power series in certain characteristic classes of tautological bundles.

We formulate a version of the integral Hodge conjecture for categories, prove the conjecture for two-dimensional Calabi–Yau categories which are suitably deformation equivalent to the derived category of a K3 or abelian surface, and use this to deduce cases of the usual integral Hodge conjecture for varieties. Along the way, we prove a version of the variational integral Hodge conjecture for families of two-dimensional Calabi–Yau categories, as well as a general smoothness result for relative moduli spaces of objects in such families. Our machinery also has applications to the structure of intermediate Jacobians, such as a criterion in terms of derived categories for when they split as a sum of Jacobians of curves.

An interesting theory arises when the classical theory of modular forms is expanded to include differential analogs of modular forms. One of the main motivations for expanding the theory of modular forms is the existence of differential modular forms with a remarkable property, called isogeny covariance, that classical modular forms cannot possess. Among isogeny covariant differential modular forms there exists a particular modular form that plays a central role in the theory. The main result presented in the article will be the explicit computation modulo p of this fundamental isogeny covariant differential modular form.

Voevodsky conjectured that numerical equivalence and smash equivalence coincide on a smooth projective variety. We prove the conjecture for 1-cycles on varieties dominated by products of curves.

We find a non-displaceable Lagrangian torus fiber in a semi-toric system which is superheavy with respect to a certain symplectic quasi-state. The proof employs both 4-dimensional techniques and those from symplectic field theory. In particular, our result implies Lagrangian $\mathbb{R}P^{2}$ is not a stem in $\mathbb{C}P^{2}$, answering a question of Entov and Polterovich.

Generalizing a result of Yoshinaga in dimension three, we show that a central hyperplane arrangement in 4-space is free exactly if its restriction with multiplicities to a fixed hyperplane of the arrangement is free and its reduced characteristic polynomial equals the characteristic polynomial of this restriction. We show that the same statement holds true in any dimension when imposing certain tameness hypotheses.

We prove that the Hilbert–Kunz multiplicity is upper semi-continuous in F-finite rings and algebras of essentially finite type over an excellent local ring.

A uniform version of the Shafarevich Conjecture for function fields (Theorem of Parshin–Arakelov) is proved, together with a uniform version of the geometric Mordell conjecture (Theorem of Manin). Such results are generalized to base varieties of arbitrary dimension (i.e. function fields of arbitrary transcendence degree).

Let Ω be an irreducible bounded symmetric domain and $\Gamma \subset {\rm Aut}(\Omega)$ be a torsion-free discrete group of automorphisms, $X: = \Omega/\Gamma$. We study the problem of algebro-geometric and differential-geometric characterizations of certain compact holomorphic geodesic cycles $S \subset X$. We treat special cases of the problem, pertaining to a situation in which S is a compact holomorphic curve, and to the case where Ω is a classical domain dual to the hyperquadric. In both cases we consider algebro-geometric characterizations in terms of tangent subspaces. As a consequence we derive effective pinching theorems where certain complex submanifolds $S \subset X$ are proven to be totally geodesic whenever their scalar curvatures are pinched between certain computed universal constants, independent of the volume of the submanifold S, giving new examples of the gap phenomenon for the characterization of compact holomorphic geodesic cycles.

We study the Chow group of zero-dimensional cycles for projective homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups. We show that in many cases this group has no torsion.

In this paper, motivated by a problem posed by Barry Mazur, we show that for smooth projective varieties over the rationals, the odd cohomology groups of degree less than or equal to the dimension can be modeled by the cohomology of an abelian variety, provided the geometric coniveau is maximal. This provides an affirmative answer to Mazur’s question for all uni-ruled threefolds, for instance. Concerning cohomology in degree three, we show that the image of the Abel–Jacobi map admits a distinguished model over the rationals.

We generalize the injectivity theorem of Esnault and Viehweg, and apply it to the structure of log canonical type divisors.

Generalizing a conjecture of Deligne, Kontsevich proposed that there should be a notion of Hochschild cohomology of algebras over the little cube operad (or its chain complex) which in a natural way generalizes Hochschild cohomology of associative algebras. He moreover conjectured that the Hochschild cohomology, in this new sense, of an algebra over the little k-cube operad is an algebra over the little (k + 1)-cube operad. In this paper, we precisely state and prove this conjecture.

We present a new construction of the $p$ -adic local Langlands correspondence for $\operatorname{GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ via the patching method of Taylor–Wiles and Kisin. This construction sheds light on the relationship between the various other approaches to both the local and the global aspects of the $p$ -adic Langlands program; in particular, it gives a new proof of many cases of the second author’s local–global compatibility theorem and relaxes a hypothesis on the local mod  $p$ representation in that theorem.

We consider lattice-free simplices, simplices with vertices on the lattice Z in R and no other integral points; we show, by elementary methods, that there exist such simplices in dimension d with width (see Definition 2) going to infinity with d.
