The level of distribution of a complex-valued sequence $b$ measures the quality of distribution of $b$ along sparse arithmetic progressions $nd+a$. We prove that the Thue–Morse sequence has level of distribution $1$, which is essentially best possible. More precisely, this sequence gives one of the first nontrivial examples of a sequence satisfying a Bombieri–Vinogradov-type theorem for each exponent $\theta <1$. This result improves on the level of distribution $2/3$ obtained by Müllner and the author. As an application of our method, we show that the subsequence of the Thue–Morse sequence indexed by $\lfloor n^c\rfloor$, where $1 < c < 2$, is simply normal. This result improves on the range $1 < c < 3/2$ obtained by Müllner and the author and closes the gap that appeared when Mauduit and Rivat proved (in particular) that the Thue–Morse sequence along the squares is simply normal.

In this article we establish the arithmetic purity of strong approximation for certain semisimple simply connected linear algebraic groups and their homogeneous spaces over a number field $k$. For instance, for any such group $G$ and for any open subset $U$ of $G$ with ${\mathrm {codim}}(G\setminus U, G)\geqslant 2$, we prove that (i) if $G$ is $k$-simple and $k$-isotropic, then $U$ satisfies strong approximation off any finite number of places; and (ii) if $G$ is the spin group of a non-degenerate quadratic form which is not compact over archimedean places, then $U$ satisfies strong approximation off all archimedean places. As a consequence, we prove that the same property holds for affine quadratic hypersurfaces. Our approach combines a fibration method with subgroup actions developed for induction on the codimension of $G\setminus U$, and an affine linear sieve which allows us to produce integral points with almost-prime polynomial values.

Since their inception in the 1930s by von Neumann, operator algebras have been used to shed light on many mathematical theories. Classification results for self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint operator algebras manifest this approach, but a clear connection between the two has been sought since their emergence in the late 1960s. We connect these seemingly separate types of results by uncovering a hierarchy of classification for non-self-adjoint operator algebras and $C^{*}$-algebras with additional $C^{*}$-algebraic structure. Our approach naturally applies to algebras arising from $C^{*}$-correspondences to resolve self-adjoint and non-self-adjoint isomorphism problems in the literature. We apply our strategy to completely elucidate this newly found hierarchy for operator algebras arising from directed graphs.

The principal aim of this article is to attach and study $p$-adic $L$-functions to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations $\Pi$ of $\operatorname {GL}_{2n}$ over a totally real field $F$ admitting a Shalika model. We use a modular symbol approach, along the global lines of the work of Ash and Ginzburg, but our results are more definitive because we draw heavily upon the methods used in the recent and separate works of all three authors. By construction, our $p$-adic $L$-functions are distributions on the Galois group of the maximal abelian extension of $F$ unramified outside $p\infty$. Moreover, we work under a weaker Panchishkine-type condition on $\Pi _p$ rather than the full ordinariness condition. Finally, we prove the so-called Manin relations between the $p$-adic $L$-functions at all critical points. This has the striking consequence that, given a unitary $\Pi$ whose standard $L$-function admits at least two critical points, and given a prime $p$ such that $\Pi _p$ is ordinary, the central critical value $L(\frac {1}{2}, \Pi \otimes \chi )$ is non-zero for all except finitely many Dirichlet characters $\chi$ of $p$-power conductor.

We construct a Baum–Connes assembly map localised at the unit element of a discrete group $\Gamma$. This morphism, called $\mu _\tau$, is defined in $KK$-theory with coefficients in $\mathbb {R}$ by means of the action of the idempotent $[\tau ]\in KK_{\mathbin {{\mathbb {R}}}}^\Gamma (\mathbb {C},\mathbb {C})$ canonically associated to the group trace of $\Gamma$. We show that the corresponding $\tau$-Baum–Connes conjecture is weaker than the classical version, but still implies the strong Novikov conjecture. The right-hand side of $\mu _\tau$ is functorial with respect to the group $\Gamma$.

Let $E/\mathbb {Q}$ be a number field of degree $n$. We show that if $\operatorname {Reg}(E)\ll _n |\!\operatorname{Disc}(E)|^{1/4}$ then the fraction of class group characters for which the Hecke $L$-function does not vanish at the central point is $\gg _{n,\varepsilon } |\!\operatorname{Disc}(E)|^{-1/4-\varepsilon }$. The proof is an interplay between almost equidistribution of Eisenstein periods over the toral packet in $\mathbf {PGL}_n(\mathbb {Z})\backslash \mathbf {PGL}_n(\mathbb {R})$ associated to the maximal order of $E$, and the escape of mass of the torus orbit associated to the trivial ideal class.

The (tree) amplituhedron $\mathcal {A}_{n,k,m}(Z)$ is a certain subset of the Grassmannian introduced by Arkani-Hamed and Trnka in 2013 in order to study scattering amplitudes in $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang–Mills theory. Confirming a conjecture of the first author, we show that when $m$ is even, a collection of affine permutations yields a triangulation of $\mathcal {A}_{n,k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in \operatorname {Gr}_{>0}(k+m,n)$ if and only if the collection of their inverses yields a triangulation of $\mathcal {A}_{n,n-m-k,m}(Z)$ for any $Z\in \operatorname {Gr}_{>0}(n-k,n)$. We prove this duality using the twist map of Marsh and Scott. We also show that this map preserves the canonical differential forms associated with the corresponding positroid cells, and hence obtain a parity duality for amplituhedron differential forms.

In this paper we prove the mixed Ax–Schanuel theorem for the universal abelian varieties (more generally any mixed Shimura variety of Kuga type), and give some simple applications. In particular, we present an application for studying the generic rank of the Betti map.

We revisit the paper [Automorphy lifting for residually reducible$l$-adic Galois representations, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 28 (2015), 785–870] by the third author. We prove new automorphy lifting theorems for residually reducible Galois representations of unitary type in which the residual representation is permitted to have an arbitrary number of irreducible constituents.

We improve upon the local bound in the depth aspect for sup-norms of newforms on $D^\times$, where $D$ is an indefinite quaternion division algebra over ${\mathbb {Q}}$. Our sup-norm bound implies a depth-aspect subconvexity bound for $L(1/2, f \times \theta _\chi )$, where $f$ is a (varying) newform on $D^\times$ of level $p^n$, and $\theta _\chi$ is an (essentially fixed) automorphic form on $\textrm {GL}_2$ obtained as the theta lift of a Hecke character $\chi$ on a quadratic field. For the proof, we augment the amplification method with a novel filtration argument and a recent counting result proved by the second-named author to reduce to showing strong quantitative decay of matrix coefficients of local newvectors along compact subsets, which we establish via $p$-adic stationary phase analysis. Furthermore, we prove a general upper bound in the level aspect for sup-norms of automorphic forms belonging to any family whose associated matrix coefficients have such a decay property.

This paper generalizes the Gan–Gross–Prasad (GGP) conjectures that were earlier formulated for tempered or more generally generic L-packets to Arthur packets, especially for the non-generic L-packets arising from Arthur parameters. The paper introduces the key notion of a relevant pair of Arthur parameters that governs the branching laws for ${{\rm GL}}_n$ and all classical groups over both local fields and global fields. It plays a role for all the branching problems studied in Gan et al. [Symplectic local root numbers, central critical L-values and restriction problems in the representation theory of classical groups. Sur les conjectures de Gross et Prasad. I, Astérisque 346 (2012), 1–109] including Bessel models and Fourier–Jacobi models.

Yoshikawa in [Invent. Math. 156 (2004), 53–117] introduces a holomorphic torsion invariant of $K3$ surfaces with involution. In this paper we completely determine its structure as an automorphic function on the moduli space of such $K3$ surfaces. On every component of the moduli space, it is expressed as the product of an explicit Borcherds lift and a classical Siegel modular form. We also introduce its twisted version. We prove its modularity and a certain uniqueness of the modular form corresponding to the twisted holomorphic torsion invariant. This is used to study an equivariant analogue of Borcherds’ conjecture.

We introduce the notion of a $Y$-pattern with coefficients and its geometric counterpart: an $\mathcal {X}$-cluster variety with coefficients. We use these constructions to build a flat degeneration of every skew-symmetrizable specially completed $\mathcal {X}$-cluster variety $\widehat {\mathcal {X} }$ to the toric variety associated to its g-fan. Moreover, we show that the fibers of this family are stratified in a natural way, with strata the specially completed $\mathcal {X}$-varieties encoded by $\operatorname {Star}(\tau )$ for each cone $\tau$ of the $\mathbf {g}$-fan. These strata degenerate to the associated toric strata of the central fiber. We further show that the family is cluster dual to $\mathcal {A}_{\mathrm {prin}}$ of Gross, Hacking, Keel and Kontsevich [Canonical bases for cluster algebras, J. Amer. Math. Soc. 31 (2018), 497–608], and the fibers cluster dual to $\mathcal {A} _t$. Finally, we give two applications. First, we use our construction to identify the toric degeneration of Grassmannians from Rietsch and Williams [Newton-Okounkov bodies, cluster duality, and mirror symmetry for Grassmannians, Duke Math. J. 168 (2019), 3437–3527] with the Gross–Hacking–Keel–Kontsevich degeneration in the case of $\operatorname {Gr}_2(\mathbb {C} ^{5})$. Next, we use it to link cluster duality to Batyrev–Borisov duality of Gorenstein toric Fanos in the context of mirror symmetry.

We prove a decomposition formula of logarithmic Gromov–Witten invariants in a degeneration setting. A one-parameter log smooth family $X \longrightarrow B$ with singular fibre over $b_0\in B$ yields a family $\mathscr {M}(X/B,\beta ) \longrightarrow B$ of moduli stacks of stable logarithmic maps. We give a virtual decomposition of the fibre of this family over $b_0$ in terms of rigid tropical maps to the tropicalization of $X/B$. This generalizes one aspect of known results in the case that the fibre $X_{b_0}$ is a normal crossings union of two divisors. We exhibit our formulas in explicit examples.

We settle several fundamental questions about the theory of universal deformation quantization of Lie bialgebras by giving their complete classification up to homotopy equivalence. Moreover, we settle these questions in a greater generality: we give a complete classification of the associated universal formality maps. An important new technical ingredient introduced in this paper is a polydifferential endofunctor ${\mathcal {D}}$ in the category of augmented props with the property that for any representation of a prop ${\mathcal {P}}$ in a vector space $V$ the associated prop ${\mathcal {D}}{\mathcal {P}}$ admits an induced representation on the graded commutative algebra $\odot ^\bullet V$ given in terms of polydifferential operators. Applying this functor to the minimal resolution $\widehat {\mathcal {L}\textit{ieb}}_\infty$ of the genus completed prop $\widehat {\mathcal {L}\textit{ieb}}$ of Lie bialgebras we show that universal formality maps for quantizations of Lie bialgebras are in one-to-one correspondence with morphisms of dg props
