A graph $H$ is common if the number of monochromatic copies of $H$ in a 2-edge-colouring of the complete graph $K_n$ is asymptotically minimised by the random colouring. Burr and Rosta, extending a famous conjecture of Erdős, conjectured that every graph is common. The conjectures of Erdős and of Burr and Rosta were disproved by Thomason and by Sidorenko, respectively, in the late 1980s. Collecting new examples of common graphs had not seen much progress since then, although very recently a few more graphs were verified to be common by the flag algebra method or the recent progress on Sidorenko’s conjecture. Our contribution here is to provide several new classes of tripartite common graphs. The first example is the class of so-called triangle trees, which generalises two theorems by Sidorenko and answers a question of Jagger, Šťovíček, and Thomason from 1996. We also prove that, somewhat surprisingly, given any tree $T$ , there exists a triangle tree such that the graph obtained by adding $T$ as a pendant tree is still common. Furthermore, we show that adding arbitrarily many apex vertices to any connected bipartite graph on at most $5$ vertices yields a common graph.

A long-standing conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits asserts that for every rational number $r\in (1,2)$ there exists a bipartite graph H such that $\mathrm{ex}(n,H)=\Theta(n^r)$ . So far this conjecture is known to be true only for rationals of form $1+1/k$ and $2-1/k$ , for integers $k\geq 2$ . In this paper, we add a new form of rationals for which the conjecture is true: $2-2/(2k+1)$ , for $k\geq 2$ . This in turn also gives an affirmative answer to a question of Pinchasi and Sharir on cube-like graphs. Recently, a version of Erdős and Simonovits $^{\prime}$ s conjecture, where one replaces a single graph by a finite family, was confirmed by Bukh and Conlon. They proposed a construction of bipartite graphs which should satisfy Erdős and Simonovits $^{\prime}$ s conjecture. Our result can also be viewed as a first step towards verifying Bukh and Conlon $^{\prime}$ s conjecture. We also prove an upper bound on the Turán number of theta graphs in an asymmetric setting and employ this result to obtain another new rational exponent for Turán exponents: $r=7/5$ .

In 1975 Bollobás, Erdős, and Szemerédi asked the following question: given positive integers $n, t, r$ with $2\le t\le r-1$ , what is the largest minimum degree $\delta (G)$ among all $r$ -partite graphs $G$ with parts of size $n$ and which do not contain a copy of $K_{t+1}$ ? The $r=t+1$ case has attracted a lot of attention and was fully resolved by Haxell and Szabó, and Szabó and Tardos in 2006. In this article, we investigate the $r\gt t+1$ case of the problem, which has remained dormant for over 40 years. We resolve the problem exactly in the case when $r \equiv -1 \pmod{t}$ , and up to an additive constant for many other cases, including when $r \geq (3t-1)(t-1)$ . Our approach utilizes a connection to the related problem of determining the maximum of the minimum degrees among the family of balanced $r$ -partite $rn$ -vertex graphs of chromatic number at most $t$ .

Given a hereditary property of graphs $\mathcal{H}$ and a $p\in [0,1]$ , the edit distance function $\textrm{ed}_{\mathcal{H}}(p)$ is asymptotically the maximum proportion of edge additions plus edge deletions applied to a graph of edge density p sufficient to ensure that the resulting graph satisfies $\mathcal{H}$ . The edit distance function is directly related to other well-studied quantities such as the speed function for $\mathcal{H}$ and the $\mathcal{H}$ -chromatic number of a random graph.

A primary tool in the proof is the categorization of p-core coloured regularity graphs in the range $p\in[1-1/\varphi,1/\varphi]$ . Such coloured regularity graphs must have the property that the non-grey edges form vertex-disjoint cliques.

A (not necessarily proper) vertex colouring of a graph has clustering c if every monochromatic component has at most c vertices. We prove that planar graphs with maximum degree $\Delta$ are 3-colourable with clustering $O(\Delta^2)$. The previous best bound was $O(\Delta^{37})$. This result for planar graphs generalises to graphs that can be drawn on a surface of bounded Euler genus with a bounded number of crossings per edge. We then prove that graphs with maximum degree $\Delta$ that exclude a fixed minor are 3-colourable with clustering $O(\Delta^5)$. The best previous bound for this result was exponential in $\Delta$.

We study quantitative relationships between the triangle removal lemma and several of its variants. One such variant, which we call the triangle-free lemma, states that for each $\epsilon>0$ there exists M such that every triangle-free graph G has an $\epsilon$ -approximate homomorphism to a triangle-free graph F on at most M vertices (here an $\epsilon$ -approximate homomorphism is a map $V(G) \to V(F)$ where all but at most $\epsilon \left\lvert{V(G)}\right\rvert^2$ edges of G are mapped to edges of F). One consequence of our results is that the least possible M in the triangle-free lemma grows faster than exponential in any polynomial in $\epsilon^{-1}$ . We also prove more general results for arbitrary graphs, as well as arithmetic analogues over finite fields, where the bounds are close to optimal.

It is well known that for any integers k and g, there is a graph with chromatic number at least k and girth at least g. In 1960s, Erdös and Hajnal conjectured that for any k and g, there exists a number h(k,g), such that every graph with chromatic number at least h(k,g) contains a subgraph with chromatic number at least k and girth at least g. In 1977, Rödl proved the case when $g=4$ , for arbitrary k. We prove the fractional chromatic number version of Rödl’s result.

We compute the large N limit of the partition function of the Euclidean Yang–Mills measure on orientable compact surfaces with genus $g\geqslant 1$ and non-orientable compact surfaces with genus $g\geqslant 2$ , with structure group the unitary group ${\mathrm U}(N)$ or special unitary group ${\mathrm{SU}}(N)$ . Our proofs are based on asymptotic representation theory: more specifically, we control the dimension and Casimir number of irreducible representations of ${\mathrm U}(N)$ and ${\mathrm{SU}}(N)$ when N tends to infinity. Our main technical tool, involving ‘almost flat’ Young diagram, makes rigorous the arguments used by Gross and Taylor (1993, Nuclear Phys. B400(1–3) 181–208) in the setting of QCD, and in some cases, we recover formulae given by Douglas (1995, Quantum Field Theory and String Theory (Cargèse, 1993), Vol. 328 of NATO Advanced Science Institutes Series B: Physics, Plenum, New York, pp. 119–135) and Rusakov (1993, Phys. Lett. B303(1) 95–98).

We analyse the behaviour of the Euclidean algorithm applied to pairs (g,f) of univariate nonconstant polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of q elements when the highest degree polynomial g is fixed. Considering all the elements f of fixed degree, we establish asymptotically optimal bounds in terms of q for the number of elements f that are relatively prime with g and for the average degree of $\gcd(g,f)$ . We also exhibit asymptotically optimal bounds for the average-case complexity of the Euclidean algorithm applied to pairs (g,f) as above.
