The pink clays from the Tagus basin, Spain, were characterized by X-ray difraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Chemical data were obtained by plasma emission spectroscopy and analytical electron microscopy (AEM), and specific surface and cation-exchange capacity were measured also. The data indicate that these pink clays are primarily stevensite. This Mg-rich smectite is characterized by poor crystallinity, a high degree of structural disorder, trioctahedral character (pure magnesian), a very low cation-exchange capacity, a very small crystal size (which generates an abnormally high specific surface area), and a deficiency of octahedral cations. On the basis of the very small crystal size, a large number of edge dislocations, the lack of periodicity (turbostratic) in the structure, and a cellular (spherical) texture observed by TEM, we consider this occurrence to be an early stage of crystallization. Unlike other precursor clay materials described in the literature, this clay is not an alteration of volcanic ash, but it was generated by precipitation from a Si- and Mg-saturated medium.

Hydroxy-Al- and hydroxy-Mg-montmorillonite were prepared by treating dispersed Na-montmorillonite with aluminum and magnesium nitrate solutions and titrating with NaOH solutions so that the OH/Al ratio varied from zero to 3.0 and the OH/Mg ratio from zero to 2.0. External precipitation of Al and Mg hydroxides was observed when the OH/M ratios (M = metal) approached 3 and 2, respectively. From chemical analyses of the initial Na-montmorillonite and the hydroxy-metal montmorillonites, structural formulae were derived by assuming that the silicate layer compositions remained unchanged. Prior to the addition of NaOH, the average interlayer material approximated in composition to [Al(OH)2]+ and [Mg(OH)]+. With additions of NaOH the interlayer compositions moved progressively towards Al(OH)3 and Mg(OH)2. When the hydroxy interlayers approached completion, external precipitation was observed. X-ray powder diffraction data showed that the hydroxy-Mg products have less tendency to swell in ethylene glycol and water, and greater thermal stability than the hydroxy-Al products. Initially, when the average interlayer compositions were near Al(OH)2 and Mg(OH), swelling followed more nearly the normal behavior.

Core cuttings from numerous wells traversing Oligocene through Recent sediments of the Texas Gulf Coast were examined with a scanning electron microscope using the back-scattered electron imaging mode (BSE) to ascertain diagenetic changes in clays and associated minerals of mudrocks and of adjacent sandstones. Several occurrences of authigenic kaolinite and chlorite were noted, each characterized by a specific texture and a specific diagenetic microenvironment. In all occurrences kaolinite appears to have formed before chlorite, and in some the kaolinite appears to have precipitated directly from solution. Chlorite, ubiquitously an iron-rich variety, appears to have precipitated in some places directly from solution. It has also been noted pseudomorphous after kaolinite. A progressive decrease in the iron content of mixed-layer illite/smectite with increasing depth is believed to have released the necessary iron and to have driven the kaolinite-to-chlorite reaction.

The mechanism by which the anionic polymers interact with platelets of 2:1 clay minerals is not fully understood. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the electric field associated with the basal and edge surfaces of the clay minerals on the adsorption of anionic polymers. Two negatively charged polymers, PAM90 and ACC86, of the same molecular weig ht (2 × 105 g mol−1) but with different degrees of hydrolysis (90 and 20%, respectively), were used. The effect of pH (6, 10), NaCl concentration (0, 10 mmolC L−1) and clay particle size on PAM90 adsorption by pyrophyllite and the effect of NaCl concentration on the adsorption of these polymers by Na-montmorillonite in aqueous suspensions were studied. Adsorption of PAM90 on pyrophyllite was greater at pH 6 than at pH 10 and greater in 10 mmol L−1 NaCl than in distilled water. Adsorption of PAM90 on pyrophyllite increased with decreasing particle size. On pyrophyllite the high-charge-density PAM90 was adsorbed to a greater extent than the low-charge-density ACC86; by contrast, ACC86 adsorption was greater than that of PAM90 on Na-montmorillonite. These results were attributed to the repulsive forces which develop between the negatively charged extended-chain polymer and the extended negative electric field associated with the basal surfaces, around the Na-montmorillonite platelets. The results may suggest that the edge surfaces play a major role in PAM adsorption.

The occurrence of halloysite and/or kaolinite in clay-rich, vein-like zones in saprolites in Hong Kong has provided the opportunity to examine the conditions determining the formation of one kaolin mineral or the other and also the nature of their particles. Clay-rich zones within tuffaceous or granitic saprolites from six different hillside sites have been examined in replicate samples by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis. Kaolin minerals, sometimes together with Mn oxides and Fe oxides/oxyhydroxides, have formed within discontinuities within the altered host rocks. The fabrics of kaolin infills generally indicated several generations of kaolin formation and that shear and deformation have commonly occurred within the infills. The infills were either light or dark in color. Light-colored infills often comprised pure, or nearly pure, halloysite or kaolinite. Dark Mn- and Fe-rich infills all contained kaolinite, while including some halloysite. The very halloysitic, light-colored infills occurred in saprolites in both granite and tuff as long tubular shapes in parallel bunches. The light-colored, very kaolinitic infills occurred in tuff only, in large platy or near-platy shapes within vermiform packets. In dark-colored infills, early kaolin mineral crystallization was limited by impurities from the breakdown of primary minerals leaving dissolved and re-precipitated compounds of Mn and Fe within the infill. Kaolin minerals in infill at all the sites except one are considered to have formed as a result of weathering. The exception comprises white infills in tuff that are composed of extremely small, closely packed particles, suggesting formation by hydrothermal action. Generally, the kaolin minerals have formed by neogenesis out of solution in the discontinuities. Drying, with the formation of Mn and/or Fe oxides/oxyhydroxides, had occurred several times, indicating enhanced drainage. Where drying had occurred, kaolinite had formed. Where indications of drying in infills were absent, halloysite was predominant.

A collection of green earths belonging to traditional artists’ pigments was examined in terms of mineralogy and provenance. The studied specimens included both mineralogical reference compounds and selected commercially available artists’ pigments, and contained green micas (glauconite or celadonite), chlorite, or smectite as pigmenting agents. The samples were examined by X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis)-near-IR diffuse-reflectance spectroscopy and voltammetry of microparticles. Particular attention was paid to the Kadaň green earth, mined until the 20th century in the West Bohemia deposit. The Greene-Kelly charge-reduction test, detailed description of non-basal diffraction patterns and characteristic vibrations in the mid-IR spectra were used to classify the major pigmenting agent of the Kadaň green earth as ferruginous smectite with separately diffracting saponite-like clusters. The smectite contains ∼15% Fe, mainly in the trivalent form, a detectable fraction of Fe in tetrahedral sites, and it is accompanied by a significant amount of Ti-bearing relict minerals due to its volcanogenic origin. On the contrary, in green micas (glauconite and celadonite) the Ti content is much smaller. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy was found suitable for distinguishing Fe as a constituent of free Fe oxides from Fe in the clay structure. It was also found to be useful for discriminating between green micas and smectites.

High-temperature oxide-melt solution calorimetry and acid-solution calorimetry were used to determine the heat of dissolution of synthetic goethite with particle sizes in the range 2–75 nm and measured surface areas of 30–273 m2/g (27–240 × 103 m2/mol). Sample characterization was performed using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller method and thermogravimetric analysis. Water content (structural plus excess water) was determined from weight loss after firing at 1100°C. Calorimetric data were corrected for excess water assuming this loosely adsorbed water has the same energetics as bulk liquid water. The enthalpy of formation was calculated from calorimetric data using enthalpies of formation of hematite and liquid water as reference phases for high-temperature oxide-melt calorimetry and using enthalpy of formation of lepidocrocite for acid-solution calorimetry. The enthalpy of formation of goethite can vary by 15–20 kJ/mol as a function of surface area. The plot of calorimetric data vs. surface area gives a surface enthalpy of 0.60±0.10 J/m2 and enthalpy of formation of goethite (with nominal composition FeOOH and surface area = 0) of −561.5±1.5 kJ/mol. This surface enthalpy of goethite, which is lower than values reported previously, clarifies previous inconsistencies between goethite-hematite equilibrium thermodynamics and observations in natural systems.

Experimental studies have shown that a sharp, high-frequency IR band at ~3615 cm-1 (in H2O form) and at ~2685 cm-1 (in D2O form) is a common feature for all smectites, and its position correlates with layer charge. In order to explain the molecular origin of this band in terms of total layer charge, charge localization, as well as nature of interlayer cations influencing the position and intensity of this peak, a series of classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations was performed for several smectite models. The smectite layers were described using a modified CLAYFF force field, where the intramolecular vibrations of H2O were described more accurately by the Toukan-Rahman potential. The power spectra of molecular vibrations of hydrogens were calculated for selected sub-sets of interlayer H2O to analyze quantitatively their contribution to the observed spectral features. The statistics of hydrogen bonds in the smectite interlayers were also analyzed to support the spectral calculations.

The simulation results demonstrated clearly that only the H2O molecules in close proximity to the smectite surface are responsible for the sharp vibrational band observed. Other hypotheses for the possible origins of this band were considered carefully and eventually rejected. Two orientations of H2O molecules donating one or two H bonds to the basal oxygens of the smectite surface (monodentate and bidentate orientations, respectively) were observed. In both orientations, these H bonds are quite weak, pointing to a generally hydrophobic character of the smectite surface. Both orientations contributed to the high-frequency band, but the monodentate orientation provided the predominant contribution because surface H2O molecules in this orientation were much more abundant. In good agreement with experiment, only a small difference in the peak position was observed between smectites with different charge localization. The effect of the total layer charge, i.e. the red-shift for higher-charge smectites, was also confirmed. This shift arose from the decrease in the H-bonding distances of H2O in monodentate and bidentate orientation.

The adsorption of Cu2+ on microcrystalline gibbsite and boehmite from aqueous solutions having 2/1 and 5/1 glycine/Cu ratios has been studied using electron spin resonance (ESR). The presence of glycine inhibited metal adsorption on gibbsite above pH 5, apparently by reducing Cu hydrolysis. The preferred adsorbed species on gibbsite and boehmite, based upon the ESR parameters, were probably Cu(gly)+ and Cu(gly)20, respectively. In both experiments, rigidly-bound ternary complexes formed with Cu2+ simultaneously bonding to the surface and one or more ligands. A large excess of glycine destabilized the ternary complex and caused the desorption of Cu2+. The preferred orientation of the Cu complex on gibbsite suggests that the adsorption occurred at crystal steps and that the glycine molecule hydrogen bonded to hydroxyls of the (001) surface.

The heterogeneity of sites for Ca→K exchange was examined by microcalorimetry in the <0.2-μm fractions of some selected smectites. Six groups of sites, ranging in exothermic exchange enthalpy (-d(ΔHx)/dx) from 5.7 to 10.9 kJ/eq were identified. In Wyoming bentonites, only three groups with enthalpies of 5.7 to 7.5 kJ/eq were distinguished, although in the 0.2-1.0-μm fraction, a 10.7-kJ/eq group was also observed. Redhill and Camp Berteau smectites contained, in addition, groups with enthalpies of 8.7-10.9 kJ/eq, but a New Mexico sample only had groups with the higher values. Thus, the exchange enthalpies of four main groups of sites (reclassified from those observed) appear to be inversely related to the extents of interlayer expansion in the samples by the adsorption of polar molecules. Consequently, a 'true mont-morillonite,’ such as a <0.2-μm Wyoming bentonite, contains only fully expanding layers with -d(ΔHx)/ dx values between 5.7 and 7.5 kJ/eq. As such, it is less heterogeneous and should have a much greater swelling capability than Camp Berteau montmorillonite which has, in addition, groups with exchange enthalpies of 8.7 and 10.3 kJ/eq.

Reduced-charge samples were prepared from Li+- and Ni2+-saturated SAz-1 montmorillonite by heating at 150 and 300°C for 24 h. X-ray diffraction analysis showed interstratification of non-swelling and swelling interlayers in LiS150, while fully expandable interlayers were found in NiS150. Heating at 300°C caused collapse of the interlayers in LiS300 in contrast to NiS300, for which some expandable layers were interstratified in the pseudo-pyrophyllite structure. The infrared (IR) spectra of heated Li-SAz showed new OH-stretching and overtone bands near 3670 cm−1 and 7170 cm−1 (1395 nm), respectively, indicating creation of local trioctahedral domains containing Li(I) in the previously vacant octahedra. No evidence of OH groups in trioctahedral coordination was found in the spectra of heated Ni-SAz. Nickel is supposed to be trapped in the hexagonal holes of the tetrahedral sheets. Reduction of the layer charge substantially affected the extent of the dissolution of SAz-1 montmorillonite in HCl. The MIR and NIR spectra of unheated Li- and Ni-SAz showed a substantial degradation of their structure after acid dissolution. New bands observed at 3744 cm−1 and 7314 cm−1 (1367 nm) were assigned to the vibrations of Si-OH groups formed upon acid treatment. These bands are a means of checking the extent of acid attack on smectites, even in cases when no differences are observed in the 1300−400 cm−1 spectral region (traditionally used to monitor this process). Both the IR spectra and solution analysis revealed that development of non-swelling interlayers in heated montmorillonites substantially reduced dissolution of these samples. The results obtained confirmed that acid attack of the smectite structure occurred at both interlayer surfaces and edges. If the accessibility of the layers for protons is low due to non-swelling interlayers, the dissolution was slower and took place mainly from the particle edges.

Experimental investigations of chemical weathering in which powders of potassium feldspar, albite, leucite, muscovite, tremolite, olivine, and volcanic glass are treated with pure water and with dilute solutions of sulfuric, carbonic, and hydrochloric acid have been performed in an apparatus in which the mineral powder is exposed to a circulating water flow. The experiments have been continued recently by treating kaolinite and montmorillonite. The course of decomposition of these minerals depends on water flow rate, grain size, temperature, and pH of the solutions. These experiments in open systems are compared with investigations reported in the literature and with the conditions of natural weathering.

Reaction with Na2S solutions at high pH led to almost complete, reversible reduction of iron in montmorillonite, whereas the structural iron of nontronite persisted in the ferric form. Concentrated Na2S solutions caused severe corrosion of nontronite and extracted appreciable amounts of iron, which was precipitated as sulphides. In contrast the morphology of montmorillonite was preserved and only very minor amounts of iron were extracted. These differences were attributed to the high concentration of Fe-OH-Fe groups in nontronite, which are unstable on reduction. The difference between Na2S and other reducing agents is discussed.

In general, the N2-BET surface areas of sepiolite samples range from 95 to 400 m2/g depending on deposits.

The surface areas of five sepiolites, all varying in crystallite size, were measured on heating, and were compared with a model calculation. A sharp decrease in the surface area, due to crystal folding, was observed between 200° and 400°C. Both before and after the folding, each sepiolite sample had peculiar values. Our model sufficiently explains this difference in surface areas among the samples. In the model, which is based on the Brauner-Preisinger structural model, surface area is a function of the crystallite size and the ratios of the coverage for nitrogen adsorption on both the internal and external surfaces. These ratios of the coverage can be inversely estimated from the model. The ratios of the coverage on the internal surface are less than 0.19, and that on the external surface between 0.7 and 1.0.

This study characterizes various chemical and mineralogical properties of goethite and jarosite from a mine drainage environment using chemical extraction techniques, X-ray diffractometry (XRD), 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Goethite and jarosite precipitates were collected from leachate-contaminated soils and from groundwater samples that were stored for up to 3 y. The results indicate that the soil goethites have primarily microcrystalline morphologies with moderately large mean crystallite dimensions (MCD110 ∼ 40 nm), and are superparamagnetic at room temperature and magnetically ordered at 77 K. The substitution of Al for Fe in the goethites is less than 0.03 mol/mol, and there is consequently no measured contraction in the goethite unit cell volume. The jarosite unit cell dimensions, Mössbauer parameters and chemical compositions indicate that the precipitates are primarily well-crystallized K-Na-H3O solid solutions, although the presence of poorly crystalline H3O-rich jarosite is also identified in one sample.

Tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (III) complexes (Alq3), one of the molecules studied most widely for organic light-emitting devices, were formed in the interlayer spaces of smectites by solid-solid reactions between Al-smectites (Al-montmorillonite and Al-synthetic saponite (Sumecton)) and 8-hydroxyquinoline (8Hq) at room temperature. The intercalation of 8-hydroxyquinoline molecules into Al-smectites was demonstrated by powder XRD, FTIR, DTA, TG, TG-MS, and chemical analysis. The coordination of the ligand to the interlayer Al cations was proved by FTIR, UV-Vis, and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The luminescence intensity of Alq3-Sumecton was much greater than that of Alq3-montmorillonite, and this was ascribed to the very small amount of quenching impurities in Sumecton.

X-ray diffraction with a position-sensitive detector (XRD-PSD) was used to make a time-resolved study of the dynamics of deposition and dehydration of Na-montmorillonite crystallites on flat substrates from deionized water suspensions. The static PSD geometry and simultaneous counting procedure allowed the acquisition of high-resolution data on the dynamics of interlayer and interparticle arrangements during dehydration. Three experimental datasets of Na-smectite dehydration are presented, each one representing different initial sample states (suspension, slurry and re-wetted thin film). The computer program NEWMOD was used to simulate one of the three datasets (dehydration of a smectite suspension) and thus obtain the apparent changes in relative proportions of different 00l values as smectite crystallites formed and dehydrated. Two types of diffracting domains formed: water-dispersed ‘packets’ of 1–2 smectite layers gaining long-range order in the c axis direction as water was lost to evaporation, and smectite layers deposited as hydrated crystallites with variable interlayer water contents. The experimental patterns show the rapid step-wise transition of Na-montmorillonite layers from d values of ∼55 to 18.5, 15.4 and 12.5 Å, with variations that depended upon how the hydrated smectite sample was prepared. The simulations show that there was a wide range of d values whose frequency distribution changed as dehydration proceeded and that transient d values occurred between the peaks observed experimentally. The data obtained in this study illustrate that XRD-PSD instruments have great potential in providing detailed data on the rapid kinetics of interlayer reorganization.

Two analogous inorganic-organic hybrids with a phyllosilicate-like structure SILMg1 and SILMg2, containing 3-aminopropyl- and N-propylethylenediaminetrimethoxysilane were synthesized through a sol-gel process. These hybrids adsorbed divalent cations of cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc from aqueous solution to give the effectiveness of adsorption capacities in the sequence Cu2+ > Zn2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+. SILMg1 has a higher capacity of adsorption than SILMg2. Elemental analysis, X-ray diffractometry, thermal analysis, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, and energy dispersive system microscopy characterized all hybrids. The proposed adsorption mechanism involves dissolution of the precursor matrix, formation of a phyllosilicate around the adsorbed ion, and a complexation of the cation by the amino-pendant groups in the interlayer. These new phyllosilicates are more crystalline than the original hybrids. The adsorption of Co2+ increases the interlayer distance to maximum values of 1.81 and 2.24 Å for SILMg1 and SILMg2, respectively. Thermal analysis data showed a decrease of thermal stability with cation adsorption. Si-O-Si groups were detected by infrared spectroscopy in all hybrids and a band at 1384 cm-1 was assigned to the nitrate counter anion, which indicates the participation of this ion in the sphere of coordination of the interlayer complexes. The photomicrographs obtained by scanning electron microscopy showed the organized distribution of the sheet structure for these synthesized phyllosilicates.

The Şile Region contains discontinuous, cyclic, thin coal beds and industrial clay deposits that were accumulated in lacustrine basins which received extensive volcanoclastic sediments due to transport of highly weathered calc-alkaline volcanic rocks. The Sülüklü area has the largest kaolin deposit in this region. Cyclic kaolinization depended on the degree of leaching of Si and alkalis in cyclic swamp environments and, therefore, kaolinite contents vary in each discontinuous lens-shaped clay bed and underclay within the basin. The kaolins comprise disordered kaolinite, illite, smectite, gibbsite, quartz, pyrite, anatase, K-feldspar and goethite. Depth-related changes in the distribution of clay minerals, associated with coal beds, are indicative of organic acid-mineral reactions. Kaolinite crystallization initiated at the edges of sericitic mica sheets in the form of composite kaolinite stacks. The small size (<1 µm), morphology and poor crystallinity of kaolinite crystals suggest that kaolinization post dated transportation. Primary or secondary origins of particles can be determined from the stacking sequences of kaolinite particles using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. Kaolinite stacks always contain a small amount of illite, but smectite is only present in the middle and upper levels. Gibbsite is a main constituent of refractory bauxitic clays locally found as discontinuous lenses and exploited from the lower level of the basin.

Genesis of kaolin deposits took place in two stages: first, there was in situ weathering of the oldest andesitic agglomerates, tuffs and ashes at the base of the lacustrine basin coupled with discharge of shallow thermal waters which were initiated by local hydrothermal alteration; second, surface weathering enhanced transportation of altered rocks from the surrounding hills into the lacustrine basin. Kaolinization took place in cyclic swamp environments, as indicated by the presence of cyclic thin- to thick-bedded coals that provided necessary humic and fulvic acids for the post-depositional alteration of altered volcanic rocks to kaolin in dysaerobic, relatively low-pH conditions in saturated groundwater zones.

Montmorillonite modified with the cationic biopolymer, chitosan, has, in weak acidic solutions, protonated amine groups which act as anion-adsorption sites. Due to the specific surroundings of the adsorption sites and diffusion paths in the interlayer of chitosan-montmorillonite, preferential adsorption of certain anions is likely. In the present study, the adsorption properties for the inorganic anions Cr(VI) and As(V) were determined, taking into account solution pH and competitive adsorption in the presence of Cl− and ${\text{SO}}_4^{2-}$${\rm{SO}}_4^{2 - }$. Chitosan-montmorillonite was prepared by adding an amount of chitosan equivalent to 500% of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) at pH 5 and 75°C. The resulting anion exchange capacity was ∼0.34 molc/kg. The adsorption properties for As(V) and Cr(VI) were determined with the batch technique at pH 3 to 9. Adsorption isotherms were fitted to the Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich equations and judged quantitatively by the correlation coefficient. To describe the competitive adsorption, the selectivity (S) was determined by the ratio of amounts of anions A and B adsorbed (qA/qB) in a binary system. The ionic species adsorbed, i.e. either Cr(VI) or As(V), depended on the pH, as did the degree of protonation of the amine groups, and this played a decisive role in the amount of anions adsorbed. The maximum amount of Cr(VI) adsorbed was 180 mmol/kg at pH 3.5, whereas for As(V) it was 120 mmol/kg at pH 4.0 to 5.0. The adsorption process of Cr(VI) and As(V) fit well to the Langmuir isotherm. By increasing the concentration of the competitive anion, Cl−, in solution, the amount of Cr(VI) and As(V) adsorbed remained almostconstant, whereas ${\text{SO}}_4^{2-}$${\rm{SO}}_4^{2 - }$ had a more pronounced competitive effect. At concentration ratios of 0.5 and 1 for ${\text{SO}}_4^{2-}$${\rm{SO}}_4^{2 - }$ to Cr(VI) and As(V), respectively, the sorption capacity decreased by 10 and 25%, respectively. The sequence of the selectivity was: $\text{Cr}\left(\text{VI}\right)>{\text{SO}}_4^{2-}>\text{As}\left(\text{V}\right)>{\text{Cl}}^{-}$${\rm{Cr}}\left( {{\rm{VI}}} \right) > {\rm{SO}}_4^{2 - } > {\rm{As}}\left( {\rm{V}} \right) > {\rm{C}}{{\rm{l}}^ - }$. Chitosan-montmorillonite showed a high selectivity for Cr(VI), which adsorbed chemically. Despite the lower affinity for As(V) and physical adsorption, the adsorption capacity was relatively high.
