Let G be a locally compact group and H an open subgroup of G. The embeddings of group C*-algebras associated with H into the group C*-algebras associated with G are studied. Three conditions for the embeddings given in terms of C*-norms of the group algebras, group representations and positive definite functions are shown to be equivalent. As corollary, we prove that the full C*-algebra of H can be embedded into the full C*-algebra of G in a natural way as well as the case for the reduced group C*-algebras. We also show that the embeddings hold for their duals and double duals.

An oscillation criterion for an even order equation: x(n) + q(t)ƒ(x(t)), x[g(t)]) = 0 is provided. This criterion is an extension of a result established by Yeh for the second order equation ẍ + q(t)ƒ(x(t)), x[g(t)]) = 0.

This note determines the quadratic field generated by the square root of the discriminant of the modular equation satisfied by the special value j(α) of the modular function α for a an integer in an imaginary quadratic field.

Let X and Y be metric spaces. This paper considers the relationship between uniform convergence in C(X, Y) and topological convergence of functions in C(X, Y), viewed as subsets of X×Y. In general, uniform convergence in C(X, Y) implies Hausdorff metric convergence which, in turn, implies topological convergence, but if X and Y are compact, then all three notions are equivalent. If C([0, 1], Y) is nontrivial arid topological convergence in C(X, Y) implies uniform converger ce then X is compact. Theorem: Let X be compact and Y be loyally compact but noncompact. Then topological convergence in C(X, Y) implies uniform convergence if and only if X has finitely many components. We also sharpen a related result of Naimpally.

In the first part we construct a subset H of positive measure in the unit interval and a zero-sequence {an} so that H contains no homothetic copy of {an}. In Theorem 2 we prove that if ε > 0 and a zero-sequence {an} are given then there exists a set A of measure less than ε so that covers the interval. An application of this result is Theorem 3: for any sequence {an} and ε > 0 there is a set H of measure 1 - ε such that for no N and c is {an + c}n ≥ N contained by H.

A theorem by H. Robbins shows that every closed and non-empty subset of the unit ball Bn in Euclidean n-space is the fixed point set of a self map of Bn. This result is extended to coincidence producing maps of Bn, where a map ƒ:X → Y is coincidence producing (or universal) if it has a coincidence with every map g:X → Y. The main result implies that if ƒ:Bn, Sn - 1 → Bn, Sn - 1 is coincidence producing and A⊂Bn closed and nonempty, then there exist a map ƒ': Bn, Sn - 1 → Bn, Sn - 1 and a map g: Bn → Bn such that ƒ' | Sn - 1 is homotopic to ƒ | Sn-1 and A is the coincidence set of ƒ' and g.

A projective geometry of dimension (n - 1) can be defined as modular lattice with a spanning n-diamond of atoms (i.e.: n + 1 atoms in general position whose join is the unit of the lattice). The lemma we show is that one could equivalently define a projective geometry as a modular lattice with a spanning n-diamond that is (a) is generated (qua lattice) by this n-diamond and a coordinating diagonal and (b) every non-zero member of this coordinatizing diagonal is invertible. The lemma is applied to describe certain freely generated modular and Arguesian lattices.

In [3], Reed establishes a bijection between the (equivalence classes of) principal T1-extensions of a topological space X and the compatible, cluster-generated, Lodato nearnesses on X. We extend Reed's result to the T0 case by obtaining a one-to-one correspondence between the principal T0-extensions of a space X and the collections of sets (called “t-grill sets”) which generate a certain class of nearnesses which we call “t-bunch generated” nearnesses. This correspondence specializes to principal T0-compactifications. Finally, we show that there is a bijection between these t-grill sets and the filter systems of Thron [5], and that the corresponding extensions are equivalent.

Necessary and sufficient conditions are proved for the existence of maximal and minimal positive solutions of the semilinear differential equation Δu = -ƒ(x, u) in exterior domains of Euclidean n-space. The hypotheses are that ƒ(x, u) is nonnegative and Hölder continuous in both variables, and bounded above and below by ugi(| x |, u), i = 1, 2, respectively, where each gi(r, u) is monotone in u for each r > 0.

The main purpose of this paper is to give a characterization of a Veronese manifold, as a generalization of a Veronese surface, in terms of isotropic immersions. This is an improvement of Itoh and Ogiue's results.

It is well-known that a topological space is a Gleason part of some complex function algebra if and only if it is completely regular and σ-compact. In the present paper, a Gleason part of a real function algebra is characterized as a completely regular σ-compact topological space which admits an involutoric homeomorphism.

Recently, H. M. Srivastava extended certain interesting generating functions of L. Carlitz to the forms:

where are general oncand many-parameter sequences of functions. In the present paper some general addition formulas for analogous sequences of functions are derived, and a number of interesting applications of the main results are given.

In this paper an explicit regular sequence-to-sequence summability method is presented which sums the geometric series to the value 1/(1-z) in all of ℂ\{1} and to infinity at the point 1. The method also provides compact convergence in ℂ \ [ 1, ∞) and therefore improves well-known results by Le Roy, Lindelöf and Mittag-Leffler.

It is reasonable to expect that, under suitable conditions, Padé approximants should provide nearly optimal rational approximations to analytic functions in the unit disc. This is shown to be the case for ez in the sense that main diagonal Padé approximants are shown to converge as expeditiously as best uniform approximants. Some more general but less precise related results are discussed.

In 1929 J. Hjelmslev introduced a geometry over the dual numbers ℝ+tℝ with t2 = Q. The dual numbers form a Hjelmslev ring, that is a local ring whose (unique) maximal ideal is equal to the set of 2 sided zero divisors and whose ideals are totally ordered by inclusion. This paper first shows that if we endow the dual numbers with the product topology of ℝ2, then we obtain the only locally compact connected hausdorfT topological Hjelmslev ring of topological dimension two. From this fact we establish that Hjelmslev's original geometry, suitably topologized, is the only locally compact connected hausdorfr topological desarguesian projective Hjelmslev plane to topological dimension four.

Let ƒ be regular univalent and normalized in the unit disc U (i.e. ƒ ∊ S) and continuous on U ∈ T, where T denotes the boundary of U.

Recently Essén proved [5] a conjecture of Piranian [7] stating that if the derivative of ƒ ∊ S is bounded in U and ƒ(z1) = ƒ(z2) = … = ƒ(zn) for Zj ∊ T, 1 ≤ j ≤ n, then n ≤ 2. In fact, Essén proved a more general result, using a deep result on harmonic functions. The aim of the following article is to replace Essén's proof by a completely different proof which is based only on Goluzin's inequalities and is much more elementary.

The question as to the existence of nontrivial compact or weakly compact multipliers between spaces of functions on groups has been investigated for several years. Until now, however, no general method which is applicable to a large class of function spaces seems to be known

In this paper we prove that the existence of nontrivial compact multipliers between Banach function spaces on which a group acts is related to the existence of nonzero almost periodic functions.

A lattice is said to be essentially metrizable if it is an essential extension of a countable lattice. The main result of this paper is that for a completely distributive lattice the following conditions are equivalent: (1) the interval topology on L is metrizable, (2) L is essentially metrizable, (3) L has a doubly ordergenerating sublattice, (4) L is an essential extension of a countable chain.

In this paper we consider how much we can say about an irreducible symmetric space M which admits a hypersurface N with at most two distinct principal curvatures. Then we will obtain that (1) if N is locally symmetric, then M must be a sphere, a real projective space and their noncompact duals (2) if N is Einstein, then M must be rank 1.
