Let R be the pullback A ×cB, where B → C is a surjective homomorphism of commutative rings and A is a subring of C. It is shown that R and C are Hilbert rings if and only if A and B are Hilbert rings. Applications are given to the D + XE[X], D + M, and D + (X1,..., Xn)Ds[X1,..., Xn] constructions. For these constructions, new examples are given of Hilbert domains R which are unruly, in the sense that R is non-Noetherian and each of its maximal ideals is finitely generated. Related examples are also given.

Call a category "sketchable" if it is the category of models in sets of some sketch. This paper explores the subtle boundary between sketchable and non-sketchable categories. We show that the category of small categories that have at least one initial object and functors that take an initial object to an initial object is sketchable. The same is true for weak initial objects, but is false for subinitial objects (that every object has at most one arrow to). Analogous results hold if we substitute finite limits for terminal object. We also show that the category of groups and center-preserving homomorphisms is not sketchable. We describe briefly how "higher-order" sketches can fill these gaps.

The action by multiplication of the class of transpositions of the symmetric group on the other conjugacy classes defines a graded poset as described by Birkhoff ([2]). In this paper, the edges of this poset are given a weight and the structure obtained is called the poset of conjugacy classes of the symmetric group. We use weights of chains in the posets to obtain new formulas for the decomposition of products of conjugacy classes of the symmetric group in its group algebra as linear combinations of conjugacy classes and we derive a new identity involving partitions of n.

Let X be a complete metric space. Viewing continuous real functions on X as closed subsets of X × R, equipped with Hausdorff distance, we show that C(X, R) is completely metrizable provided X is complete and sigma compact. Following the Bulgarian school of constructive approximation theory, a bounded discontinuous function may be identified with its completed graph, the set of points between the upper and lower envelopes of the function. We show that the space of completed graphs, too, is completely metrizable, provided X is locally connected as well as sigma compact and complete. In the process, when X is a Polish space, we provide a simple answer to the following foundational question: which subsets of X × R arise as completed graphs?

It is proved that the summability of a series by the Borel-type summability method (B,α,β) together with a certain Tauberian condition implies its summability by the Riesz method (R, log(n + l),p).

We find an infinite word w on four symbols with the following property: Two occurrences of any block in w must be separated by more than the length of the block. That is, in any subword of w of the form xyx, the length of y is greater than the length of x. This answers a question of C. Edmunds connected to the Burnside problem for groups.

In this paper we examine the examples of isospectral but non-isometric Riemannian manifolds given by Milnor, Ikeda, and Vignéras. Of these, only Milnor's example is accounted for by Sunada's method of constructing isospectral manifolds, and even then only as an "unnatural" construction.

The main purpose of this paper is to prove, that the topology of any (non-complete) algebra norm on a JB* -algebra is stronger than the topology of the usual norm. The proof of this theorem consists of an adaptation of the recent Rodriguez proof [8] that every homomorphism from a complex normed (associative) Q-algebra onto a B*-algebra is continuous.

We discuss [2] of the same title and offer an alternative example. This example is a subalgebra of the ortholattice of closed subspaces of separable real Hilbert space.

Chern and Hamilton considered the integral of the Webster scalar curvature as a functional on the set of CR-structures on a compact 3-dimensional contact manifold. Critical points of this functional can be viewed as Riemannian metrics associated to the contact structure for which the characteristic vector field generates a 1-parameter group of isometries i.e. K-contact metrics. Tanno defined a higher dimensional generalization of the Webster scalar curvature, computed the critical point condition of the corresponding integral functional and found that it is not the K-contact condition. In this paper two other generalizations are given and the critical point conditions of the corresponding integral functionals are found. For the second of these, this is the K-contact condition, suggesting that it may be the proper generalization of the Webster scalar curvature.

The purpose of this paper is to study the rigidity and deformations of secondary characteristic classes for subfoliations.

We consider certain pseudovarieties K of lattices which are closed under the doubling of convex sets. For each such K, given an arbitrary finite lattice 𝓛, we describe the covers of the variety V(𝓛) of the form V(𝓛, K) with K a subdirectly irreducible lattice in K.

We provide vector analogues of the classical interpolation theorems for lower semicontinuous functions due to Dowker and to Hahn and Katetov-Tong.

We determine the general solutions of the functional equation for ƒi: G → F (i = 1,2,3,4), where G is a 2-divisible group and F is a commutative field of characteristic different from 2. The motivation for studying this equation came from a result due to Dry gas [4] where he proved a Jordan and von Neumann type characterization theorem for quasi-inner products. Also, this equation is a generalization of the quadratic functional equation investigated by several authors in connection with inner product spaces and their generalizations. Special cases of this equation include the Cauchy equation, the Jensen equation, the Pexider equation and many more. Here, we determine the general solution of this equation without any regularity assumptions on ƒi.
