In the present study, the interpersonal problem solving competency of nondepressed and depressed elderly were compared. The subject sample which consisted of 40 French speaking elderly were administered the Beck Depression Inventory and two subtests from the Means Ends Problem Solving Procedure. The results failed to reveal any marked differences between nondepressed and depressed elderly on the measures of Optional Thinking and Perception of Consequences. However, significant correlations were found between the interperpersonal problem solving competency measures and some of the demographic variables. Implications for future assessment of interpersonal problem solving competency in the elderly are discussed.

Falls are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in older adults. While research has explored the relationship between older care recipient falls and caregiver health, there has been little investigation of the relationship between caregiving tasks and falls in older caregivers. This study assessed associations between falls and caregiving frequency and type of caregiving tasks among informal older caregivers. Data from the Canadian Community Health Survey on Healthy Aging (Public Use Microdata File 2008–2009) (n = 2,934) were examined, using descriptive and logistic regression analyses. Higher frequency of caregiving was positively associated with falls, although those who performed household chores were less likely to report falling in the past year. Results suggest there may be an association between factors related to caregiving and falls in older caregivers. More research using longitudinal and experimental data is needed to better understand the relationship between caregiving tasks and falls in older caregivers.

The purpose of this mixed-methods research study was to examine the impact of organizational change on patient outcomes and staff experiences in a rehabilitation program for older adults. Program restructuring focused on reducing patient length of stay and increasing admissions to the rehabilitation program. Study findings revealed that patients admitted after restructuring, as compared to the time period just prior, experienced shorter lengths of stay yet made similar progress towards rehabilitation goals. The average discharge Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores between the two time periods were not significantly different. Yet FIM efficiency scores improved after the restructuring. With this reorganization, rehabilitation staff reported working harder to help patients achieve satisfactory outcomes, although initially staff reported lower morale. Findings extend the current literature and have practical implications for health care professionals interested in facilitating successful organizational change.

Given the lack of research in clinically depressed elders, and drawing on an integrative perspective, this study examined predictions of three prominent psychological models of depression (cognitive, learned helplessness, and psychodynamic theory) in a sample of elderly depressed patients. The hypothesized specificity to depression and stability of representative psychological characteristics were evaluated by comparing levels of 25 clinically depressed elders, 20 nondepressed psychiatric controls and 28 nondepressed medical controls, at hospitalization (Tl), discharge (T2) and five months later (T3). Also, the relative contribution of theory-based variables to depression severity at discharge and at follow-up was explored. While elderly depressed patients showed, overall, significantly higher levels of maladaptive cognitions, biased attributions, and selected depressogenic personality traits than medical controls, these variables did not discriminate among depressives and psychiatric controls, with the exception of negative automatic thinking, and pessimistic attributions in females. Positive attributional style and hedonism did not discriminate among subject groups. Support was found for the stability, in the depressed group, of purportedly traitlike characteristics through hospitalization to follow-up. Multiple regression analyses indicated that initial symptomatology level was the strongest predictor of both discharge and follow-up depression severity, whereas selected variables from each theoretical model contributed marginally, depending on the time of assessment.

Insulin (0.67 μM) and serum (10% v/v) stimulated hexose transport did not change with in vitro ageing of cultured human skin fibroblasts. Additionally, dexamethasone amplification of the insulin-stimulated response which yielded responses to near physiological concentrations of insulin (i.e. 6.7 nM), showed no changes with in vitro ageing. Basal (i.e. nonstimulated) hexose transport, either in the presence or absence of dexamethasone, did not change with in vitro ageing. The in vitro loss of proliferative potential during in vitro ageing of cultured human fibroblasts probably does not involve changes in short term insulin responses (e.g. stimulation of hexose transport).

Some researchers have suggested that qualitative research is increasing in the gerontology field, but little systematic analysis has tested this assertion. Using the Canadian Journal on Aging/La Revue canadienne du vieillissement as a case study, we analysed articles reporting on original research from 1995 to 2012. One in four articles were qualitative, and results in three-year intervals show a clear increase in qualitative research findings during this 18-year time frame: (a) 1995–1997: 10 per cent; (b) 1998–2000: 19 per cent; (c) 2001–2003: 25 per cent; (d) 2004–2006: 25 per cent; (e) 2007–2009: 29 per cent; and (f) 2010–2012: 43 per cent. In all time intervals (with the exception of 2004–2006), French language articles were more likely to use a qualitative research design compared to English language articles. Topics, methodologies, and data collection strategies are also discussed.

Although geriatric depression is a prevalent, serious, and under-recognized mental health condition in residential care facilities, there is a dearth of related research in Canada. This exploratory mixed methods study examines the perspectives and practices of regulated nurse professionals on assessment of geriatric depression in residential care facilities in Alberta. Findings from the quantitative surveys (n = 635) and qualitative interviews (n = 14) suggest that geriatric depression is not systematically assessed in these care settings due to multiple challenges, including confusing assessment protocol, inconsistent use and contested clinical utility of current assessment methods in facilities, limited availability of mental health professionals in facilities, and the varied views of regulated nurse professionals on who is responsible for depression assessment in facilities. Implications and future research directions are discussed.

Il est essentiel d’utiliser des tests cognitifs ayant été validés et détenant des normes de référence auprès de la population cible, puisque les réalités culturelles et linguistiques différentes entre l’échantillon de validation ou auprès duquel les normes ont été créées et la population cible peuvent affecter les résultats. Cette revue systématique vise à recenser et décrire les tests cognitifs (incluant tests, questionnaires et grilles d’observation) validés et/ou présentant des normes sur la population âgée canadienne francophone. Au total, 46 articles ont été sélectionnés. Cette revue recense 9 tests validés, 20 tests avec normes de référence et 18 tests validés et avec normes, couvrant la majorité des domaines cognitifs (fonctions mnésiques, attentionnelles, exécutives, perceptivo-motrices et langagières), excepté la cognition sociale. La quasi-totalité des échantillons ont été recrutés au Québec. Les tests relevés présentent majoritairement des indices psychométriques satisfaisants et généralement des normes considérant l’âge, le sexe et l’éducation. Cette revue systématique permettra aux cliniciens et chercheurs canadiens en vieillissement d’orienter optimalement leurs choix de tests cognitifs.

A large body of evidence has demonstrated that normal human fibroblasts have a limited division potential in culture and underwent senescence, a process whereby cells became arrested in the G1 phase of the cell cycle and overexpressed a DNA synthesis inhibitor(s). Cyclin-dependent kinase two (Cdk2) is required for the promotion of the Gi-to-S phase transition in human cells. Senescent fibroblasts contain intact cyclin-Cdk2 complexes but cannot induce Cdk2 protein kinase activity in response to mitogen stimulation. Recently, we cloned p21Sdi1, a potent inhibitor of DNA synthesis and Cdk2 kinase activity, from a senescent cell cDNA library and demonstrated that it was expressed at significantly higher levels in senescent cells than actively proliferating cells. In contrast to actively dividing cells, mitogen-stimulated senescent cells do not down-regulate the expression of p21Sdi1 and do not express late G1 phase gene products that are required for entry into S phase. We suggest that the inability of mitogen-stimulated senescent cells to down-regulate p21Sdi1 levels contributes to the resulting lack of late Gi gene expression and failure to traverse the G1/S phase boundary.

This paper discusses seven major issues that will affect the development of gerontology education in response to manpower needs in aging in Canada. These issues concern the definitions of aging for educational and manpower policy, manpower forecasting, knowledge base in gerontology, gerontology as an academic field or as a professional field, development of education programs, employment opportunities, and factors in supply and demand. The author stresses the importance of creating baseline data about manpower needs and occupational settings and about the knowledge base of gerontology in Canada.

While the majority of seniors live outside of institutions, many live in seniors apartment buildings rather than in single family dwellings. MacPherson (1983) suggested that not maintaining an independent living style may have some negative consequences for seniors. The question asked was whether differences in lifestyle arising from the nature of the residence were associated with measures of psychomotor performance. Some 36 seniors, average age approximately 68 yrs., all in good health, completed 800 responses on a discrete pursuit tracking task which emphasized response speed and accuracy. Significant differences in performance were noted for both RT and speed of movement. Overall, seniors living independently, either in urban or rural areas, responded faster than seniors living in seniors apartment buildings. The data do not imply a causal relationship, however, they do suggest that psychomotor variables are relevant factors to consider in regard to differing living styles.

This research evaluates the time competence of the aged in relation to sex, age, living environment, activities, health, and socio-economic status. One hundred and sixty subjects answered a socio-demographic questionnaire. Level of time competence was evaluated by the time competence subscale of the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI) (Shostrom, 1966) and by the estimate of an interval of 40 seconds (Newman, 1972, 1976). Analysis of variance shows that level of time competence varies according to age, satisfaction in the number of activities, subjective assessment of health and living environment. These results show the possible importance of objective health in the evaluation of the time competence. In fact, subjects from the 65–75 age group living in institutions show more physical deterioration than the other subjects and less time competence. For the older subjects, time competence does not differ according to the life environment. It would therefore be important, in further studies, to take this variable into account. These results and those of earlier studies reveal that the personnel have to take into account the rate of activities imposed on the beneficiaries by their health condition when developing programs of activities because time competence also varies according to satisfaction with the number of activities. The results also cast a doubt on the sensitivity of the estimate of this particular time competence measure requiring an interval of 40 seconds.

This article is an essay, based on the attempted assessment ofresearch in the social sciences on aging in Canada and in Quebec during the last 20 years. It endeavours o t understand this area as based on institutional factors, including linguistic, cultural and political divisions between English Canada and Quebec, and the role of some major forces. Canadian research on aging is profoundly based on a social democratic vision of the role of the State that establishes the basic concept of citizenship, rights, liberties, justice and equality. It consequently contributes to maintaining the protective, redistributive, regulatory andcorrection ofinequalities that the State carries out through its social and fiscal policies. In the space of 20 years, the social sciences of aging in Canada have gone from a representation of aging characterized by decline, unavoidable physical and often psychic deterioration of capacities, impoverishment, and exclusion to a much more qualified vision of aging distinguished by the search for autonomy, adaptation, and growth in which seniors do not succumb passively to their condition but rather become responsible for their own development. At the same time, researchers, as well as experts and decision makers in the area ofaging, have turned progressively from an analysis of aging centred on social problems and the programs aimed to meet these problems, which encouraged the development of the state as provider, to an analysis of the forces and resources which seniors have or could obtain to rekindle family or community solidarities with the goal of maximum promotion of the autonomy of older persons.
