A survey is made of the way in which a variety of physical scalar and vector quantities are diffused, and convected out of fixed regions in moving fluids. In particular, viscous flow itself is viewed as the diffusion and convection of circulation which is generated at the boundaries of the fluid by the no-slip condition. The non-linearity of the problem arises from the fact that the convection field is in part self-generated by the diffused circulation. Ways of overcoming these difficulties are reviewed in the light of the above point of view. New kinematic interpretations are given for the equations governing axisymmetric viscous flow and these are used to determine the flow vector for ring circulation, angular momentum and other relevant physical quantities.

This paper is a sequel to one entitled “Varieties of topological groups”. The variety V of topological groups is said to be full if it contains every group which is algebraically isomorphic to a group in V For any Tychonoff space X, the free group F of V on X exists, is Hausdorff and disconnected, and has X as a closed subset. Any subgroup of F which is algebraically fully invariant is a closed subset of F. If X is a compact Hausdorff space, then F is normal. Let V be a full Schreier variety and X a Tychonoff space, then all finitely generated subgroups of F are free in V.

A β-variety V is one for which the free group of V on each compact Hausdorff space exists and is Hausdorff. For any β-variety V and Tychonoff space X, the free group of V exists, is Hausdorff and has X as a closed subset. A necessary and sufficient condition for V to be a β-variety is given.

The concept of a projective (topological) group of a variety V is introduced. The projective groups of V are shown to be precisely the summands of the free groups of V. A finitely generated Hausdorff projective group of a Schreier variety V is free in V.

A subset S of an additive group G is called a maximal sum-free set in G if (S+S) ∩ S = ø and ∣S∣ ≥ ∣T∣ for every sum-free set T in G. It is shown that if G is an elementary abelian p–group of order pn, where p = 3k ± 1, then a maximal sum-free set in G has kpn-1 elements. The maximal sum-free sets in Zp are characterized to within automorphism.

This paper continues the invèstigation of varieties of topological groups. It is shown that the family of all varieties of topological groups with any given underlying algebraic variety is a class and not a set. In fact the family of all β-varieties with any given underlying algebraic variety is a class and not a set. A variety generated by a family of topological groups of bounded cardinal is not a full variety.

The varieties V(R) and V(T) generated by the additive group of reals and the circle group respectively each with its usual topology are examined. In particular it is shown that a locally compact Hausdorff abelian group is in V(T) if and only if it is compact. Thus V(R) properly contains V(T).

It is proved that any free topological group of a non-indiscrete variety is disconnected. Finally, some comments are made on topologies on free groups.

Essentially this paper does the following: In Section 2 it gives necessary and sufficient conditions in order that the support of an idempotent measure on a locally compact semigroup S, be completely simple. In Section 3 it proves that if I is an ideal of S of positive measure μ (= any probability measure), then μn (I) strictly increases to the limit 1. If in addition μ is idempotent, then μ (N-1N) and μ(NN-1) are positive for any open set N. In Section 4 certain compactness conditions are proven equivalent to joint weak*–continuity of the convolution of bounded measures and a limit theorem concerning the convolution powers (Cesarò sums) of μ is proven.

In his book, Eine neue Methode in der Analysis und deren Andwendungen, P. Turán proved a number of new theorems given lower bounds for sums of powers. Since it was only his intention to demonstrate a new type of result, his bounds are by no means best possible nor are his proofs easily susceptible of improvement.

We generalise Turán's so-called Main Theorems to exponential sums with polynomial coefficients by a simple method involving only the evaluation and estimation of certain determinants. This approach gives in each case a result known to be asymptotically correct in the various exponents, and when specialised to the case of constant coefficients it provides in each case best-known results.

Our method moreover applies in more general circumstances and provided only that the determinants which arise can be conveniently estimated serves to provide lower bounds for other than exponential sums.

It is shown that, if U is a subvariety of the join of a nilpotent variety and a metabelian variety and if V is a variety with a finite basis for its laws, then UV also has a finite basis for its laws. The special cases U nilpotent and U metabelian have been established by Higman (1959) and Ivanjuta (1969) respectively. The proof here, which is independent of Ivanjuta's, depends on a rather general sufficient condition for a product variety to have a finite basis for its laws.

In this paper the forms are obtained for the harmonic potential functions describing the fundamental wave-source and multipole singularities which pertain to the study of infinitesimal time-harmonic waves on the free surface of water when the effect of surface tension is included. Line and point singularities are considered for both the cases of infinite and finite constant depth of water. The method used is an extension of that which has been used to obtain these potentials in the absence of surface tension.

An order on the collection of totally unordered subsets of a partially well ordered set is defined, shown to satisfy the descending chain condition but not to be necessarily a partial well order itself.

In this paper we prove the Theorem: A group satisfying the law (1) [x, y] = [u, v, w], where u, v, w are the entries from the set {x, x-1, y, y-1} is always abelian. Earlier a few cases of this theorem were proved by Gupta. It is also proved that a group satisfying the law = [x, y, x] is always abelian.

In this paper it is shown that an Hadamard design with each letter repeated once and only once can exist for 2, 4 and 8 letters only.

L.D. Baumert and Marshall Hall, Jr have found a design with four letters each repeated three times. Their design and the design on four letters each repeated once, found by J. Williamson, is the totality previously published.

The Main Theorems of P. Turán's book Eine neue Methode in der Analysis und deren Anwendungen concern only sums of powers but are easily generalised to exponential sums with polynomial coefficients. It does not appear to have been observed however, that similar such theorems with analogous implication as to value distribution and arithmetical behaviour can be formulated for a wider class of functions. We prove a result for functions of the form subsuming identities which Mahler has shown to contain transcendence results on the exponential and logarithmic functions and diophantine results of the Thue-Siegel-Roth type.

In this paper the problem solved is that of unsteady flow of a viscous incompressible fluid between two parallel infinite disks, which are performing torsional oscillations about a common axis. The solution is restricted to high Reynolds numbers, and thus extends an earlier solution by Rosenblat for low Reynolds numbers.

The solution is obtained by the method of matched asymptotic expansions. In the main body of the fluid the flow is inviscid, but may be rotational, and in the boundary layers adjacent to the disks the non-linear convection terms are small. These two regions do not overlap, and it is found that in order to match the solutions a third region is required in which viscous diffusion is balanced by steady convection. The angular velocity is found to be non-zero only in the boundary layers adjacent to the disks.

An integral manifold for a system of differential equations is a manifold such that any solution of the equations which has a point on it is entirely contained on it. The method of averaging establishes the existence of such a manifold for a system which is a perturbation of an autonomous system with a periodic orbit. The existence of the manifold is established here under more general hypotheses, namely for perturbations which are ‘integrally small’. The method differs from the original method of Bogolyubov and Mitropolskii and operates directly with the individual solutions. This is made possibly by the use of an appropriate norm, and is equivalent to solving the partial differential equation which occurs in work by Moser and Sacker by the method of characteristics rather than by the introduction of an artificial viscosity term. Moreover, detailed smoothness properties of the manifold are obtained. For periodic perturbations the integral manifold is a torus and these smoothness properties are just sufficient to permit the application of Denjoy's theorem.

We prove here that the (saturated) formation generated by a finite soluble group has only finitely many (saturated) subformations. This answers a question asked by Professor W. Gaschütz. Some partial results are also given in the case of a formation generated by an arbitrary finite group.

We introduce the notion of a positively independent set of elements in an ordered module. With this concept we determine a necessary and sufficient condition which insures that on a strictly ordered module over a strictly ordered ring there exists a strict total order refining the given order. This generalizes a previous result of Fuchs, concerning the case of ordered abelian groups.

As an application, let R be a strictly ordered totally ordered ring and let M be the R-module of all mappings from a set I into R, with pointwise order; then this order on M may be refined to a strict total order.

Under weak hypotheses, the geometric ergodicity of the states of a subcritical branching process with immigration is demonstrated by obtaining an asymptotic representation of the transition probabilities.

Problems pertaining to invariant measures of a non-critical Galton-Watson process, whether with or without Immigration, may be discussed in terms of measures of a subcritical process with a possibly defective immigration distribution. There is in fact only one such measure satisfying a regular variation condition. This result provides a unifying principle for several contexts of Galton-Watson theory. A full discussion with analytical details will appear elsewhere.

Let R denote a near-ring such that for each x ∈ R, there exists an integer n(x) > 1 for which xn(x) = x. We show that the additive group of R is commutative if 0.x; = 0 for all x ∈ R and every non-trivial homomorphic image R¯ of R contains a non-zero idempotent e commuting multiplicatively with all elements of R¯. As the major consequence, we obtain the result that if R is distributively-generated, then R is a ring – a generalization of a recent theorem of Ligh on boolean near-rings.

We give an elementary and self-contained proof of the result that the sheaf M~ determined by an injective module M over a commutative noetherian ring is flasque.
