Necessary and sufficient conditions for the interchange of two Bochner integrals and for the interchange of two Pettis integrals are obtained. These conditions are different from those generally required in classical Fubini theorems since they do not require the construction of the cross product measure. The proof makes use of the Vitali-Hahn-Saks Theorem. It should be noted that while Fubini theorems use the cross product measure, one of the difficulties encountered is that the product measure fails to be countable additive – this is pointed out in M. Bhaskara Rao (Indiana Univ. Math. J. 21 (1972), 847–848) and Charles Swartz (Bull. Austral. Math. Soc. 8 (1973), 359–366). Most applications require the interchange of the two integrals rather than integration with respect to the product measure.

The topic dealt with in this paper arose out of a study of theta functions and the moduli of curves. It concerns itself with configurations of lines in the plane and when they can be bitangents to a quartic. The techniques used are classical.

One method of finding non-parametric hypersurfaces of prescribed mean curvature which span a given curve in Rn is to find a function which minimizes a particular integral amongst all smooth functions satisfying certain boundary conditions. A new problem can be considered by changing the integral slightly and then minimizing over a larger class of functions. It is possible to show that a solution to this new problem exists under very general conditions and it is usually known as the generalized solution. In this paper we show that the two problems are equivalent in the sense that the least value for the original minimization problem and the generalized problem are the same even though no solution may exist. The case where the surfaces are constrained to lie above an obstacle is also considered.

A characterization of induced central extensions which gives an explicit relationship between induced central extensions and n-stem extensions is obtained. Using the characterization, necessary and sufficient conditions for a central extension of an abelian group by a nilpotent group of class n to be a Baer sum of an induced central extension and an extension of class n are obtained.

A class of locally convex spaces, a B-subfamily of finite order, is defined and the omega lemma for spaces belonging to this family is proved.

The following Gelfand-Mazur like theorems are proved in this paper:

(1) A complex Banach algebra which is locally finite, and which is also an integral domain, is isomorphic to the complex field .

(2) A complex Banach algebra which is a noetherian domain is isomorphic to .

(3) A complex Banach algebra which is a principal ideal domain is isomorphic to .

An application is given to the algebra of all complex formal power series in several variables.

We prove that for a large class of Segal algebras, the isometric multipliers consist of scalar multiples of translation operators.

Several new methods of approximation which assume arbitrary values on the boundary of a triangular domain are presented. All of the methods are affine invariant and have optimal algebraic precision. Nine parameter discrete interpolants which result from these methods are also given.

In a paper dealing with trans-sonic jet flows Frankl (Bull. Acad. Sci. URSS Sér. Math. [Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSE] 9 (1945), 121–143) considered the following problem (T) by applying the condition

where k = k(y) is a monotone increasing function with a continuous second derivative, k(0) = 0, F(0) > 0, k′(y) ≠ 0 for y < 0. Consider an equation of the form

which is elliptic for y > 0, hyperbolic for y < 0, and parabolic for y = 0. Consider equation (2) in a bounded simply connected region D ⊂ R2 which is bounded by the following three curves: a piecewise smooth curve Γ0 lying in the half-plane y > 0 which intersects the line y = 0 at the points A(0, 0) and B(l, 0); for y < 0 by a smooth curve Γ2 through B which meets the characteristic of (2) issuing from A(0, 0) at the point P; and the curve Γ1 which consists of the portion PA of the characteristic through A. The problem (T) (or problem of Tricomi-Frankl) consists of finding a solution u = u(x, y) ∈ C2(D) assuming prescribed values on Γ0 ∪ Γ2. In the present paper we generalize Frankl's uniqueness theorem; our uniqueness theorem includes cases where F(y) may be negative.

A graph G on p ≥ 2 vertices is said to be hypotraversable if G is not traversable but G − v is traversable, that is, G − v has an open trail which contains all the vertices and edges of G − v, for each vertex v of G. In this paper we first characterize hypotraversable graphs and then, using this characterization, obtain a complete enumeration of these graphs on p vertices for each positive integer p.

The concept of the perfect map on a convergence space (X, q), where q is a convergence function, is introduced and investigated. Such maps are not assumed to be either continuous or surjective. Some nontrivial examples of well known mappings between topological spaces, nontopological pretopological spaces and nonpseudotopological convergence spaces are shown to be perfect in this new sense. Among the numerous results obtained is a covering property for perfectness and the result that such maps are closed, compact, and for surjections almost-compact. Sufficient conditions are given for a compact (respectively almost-compact) map to be perfect. In the final section, a major result shows that if f: (X, q) → (Y, p) is perfect and g: (X, q) → (Z, s) is weakly-continuous into Hausdorff Z, then (f, g): (X, q) → (Y×Z, p×s) is perfect. This result is given numerous applications.

In this note we prove that for a monotone function that fixes the origin, the complementarity problem for Cn always admits a solution. If, moreover, the function is strictly monotone, then zero is the unique solution. These results are stronger than known results in this direction for two reasons: firstly, there is no condition on the nature of the cone and secondly, no feasibility assumptions are made.

It is shown that the problem of deciding whether a polygonal curve c in a finite surface complex K is knotted in K is complete recursively enumerable, and hence unsolvable.

In this paper we prove the following existence and uniqueness theorem for the nonlinear complementarity problem by using the Banach contraction principle. If T: K → H is strongly monotone and lipschitzian with k2 < 2c < k2+1, then there is a unique y ∈ K, such that Ty ∈ K* and (Ty, y) = 0 where H is a Hilbert space, K is a closed convex cone in H, and K* the polar cone.

A function meromorphic in |z| < 1 is constructed such that on every curve in |z| < 1 which goes to |z| = 1 the set of limit points of the function is the entire complex plane. This example is used to prove the existence of non-normal meromorphic functions in |z| < 1 which have continuous set valued extensions. Cima and Rung had introduced a set valued extension for meromorphic functions and proved that all normal meromorphic functions have a continuous extension while all functions with a continuous extension have the Lindelöf property. For a long time it was thought that this might characterize normal meromorphic functions. This paper proves that it is not possible to determine the normality of a meromorphic function by the continuity of Cima and Rung's set valued extension. The paper closes with the open problem: do there exist non-normal analytic functions for which Cima and Rung's set valued extension is continuous?

I this paper we extend such dynamical concepts as weak almost periodicity and simple equicontinuity of topological dynamics to the context of groups of *-automorphisms on a C*-algebra with unit. If (A, G) is a C* flow and if S(A) is the state space of A, we show that (A, G) is weakly almost periodic if and only if (S(A), G) is weakly almost periodic, and that, if A is a von Neumann algebra, then A is G-finite if and only if G is simple equicontinuous on the unit ball of A with respect to the weak *-topology.

If A is a complex Banach algebra which is also a Bezout domain, it is shown that for any prime p and a non-negative integer n, pn is not a topological divisor of zero. Using the above result it is shown that a complex Banach algebra which is a principal ideal domain is isomorphic to the complex field.
