In earlier papers (Parts I and II) existence and uniqueness of the solutions to a coupled pair of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations with linear boundary conditions was considered. These equations arise when material is undergoing an exothermic chemical reaction which is sustained by the diffusion of a reactant. In this paper we establish the existence of multiple solutions for many different values of the parameters not considered in the earlier parts. It is shown that the case, also omitted in earlier parts, with perfect thermal and mass transfer on the boundary (the double-Dirichlet case) does have a unique solution for sufficiently large values of the exothermicity or an equivalent parameter. The methods of solution provide specific bounds on the region of existence of multiple solutions.

In this note, the weak duality theorem of symmetric duality in nonlinear programming and some related results are established under weaker (strongly Pseudo-convex/strongly Pseudo-concave) assumptions. These results were obtained by Bazaraa and Goode [1] under (stronger) convex/concave assumptions on the function.

Sufficient conditions are obtained for the existence of a globally asymptotically stable strictly positive (componentwise) almost-periodic solution of a Lotka-Volterra system with almost periodic coefficients.

In Convex Structures and Economic Theory, Nikaideo analysed, inter alia, a circulating capital Leontief model where final demand could exhibit either proportional or non-proporaitonal growth. This paper extends his analsis to a fixed capital modee. Analogues of Nikaido's results are derived for the closed model and for the open model under blaanced grwoth. However, the results obtained here for the open model with unbalanced growth are weaker than Nikaido's.

Ordinary difference equations (OΔE's), mostly of order two and three, are derived for the trigonometric, Jacobian elliptic, and hyperbolic functions. The results are used to derive partial difference equations (PΔE's) for simple solutions of the wave equation and three nonlinear evolutionary partial differential equations.

We solve a minimization problem in liver kinetics posed by Bass, et al., in this journal, (1984), pages 538–562. The problem is to choose the density functions for the location of two enzymes, in order to minimize the concentration of an intermediate form of a substance at the outlet of the liver. This form may be toxic to the rest of the body, but the second enzyme renders it harmless. It seems natural that the second enzyme should be downstream from the first. However, we can show that the minimum problem is sometimes solved by an overlap of the supports of the two density functions. Even more surprising is that, for certain forms of the kinetic functions and high levels of transformation of the first enzymatic reaction, some of the first enzyme should be located downstream from all the second enzyme. This suggests that the first reaction should be relatively slow.

Critical point behaviour of the diffusion length γ for the solutions of the radiative transfer equation deep in a homogenous medium is studied. The Legendre expansion of the medium's phase function P(cos ψ) is taken to be an infinite series and is characterized by the parameters h0, h1h2,…. A characteristic equation for γ is given in terms of an infinite continued fraction. From this equation it is shown that as any one of the hn, say hp, approaches zero, the others being held constant, γ behaves as , where the critical exponent is found to be vp = ½ for all p = 0, 1, 2,….

We show that the position vector of any 3-space curve lying on a sphere satisfies a third-order linear (vector) differential equation whose coefficients involve a single arbitrary function A(s). By making various identifications of A(s), we are led to nonlinear identities for a number of higher transcendental functions: Bessel functions, Horn functions, generalized hypergeometric functions, etc. These can be considered natural geometrical generalizations of sin2t + cos2t = 1. We conclude with some applications to the theory of splines.

The sums

are shown to approximate J0 (z); the error terms are series in higher order Bessel functions, leading with J2M (z). Similar sums approximate J1(z). These sums may be looked on as extensions of the Jacobi expansions for cos z and sin z in series of Bessel functions. They become numerically useful for M > |z|.

With the help of the generalized Mayer theorem we obtain an improved inequality for free energies of model and approximating systems, where only “connected parts” over the approximating Hamiltonian are taken into account. For a concrete system we discuss the problems of convergence of appropriate series of “connected parts ”.

Sufficient conditions are given for the occurrence of various types of asymptotic behaviour in the solution of a class of n th order neutral delay differential equations. The conditions are in the form of certain inequalities amongst the constants involved in the definition of the differential equations, and specify either oscillatory behavior, or asymptotic divergence, or solutions which converge to zero.

The main object of present paper is to obtain a finite summation of Srivastava's general triple hypergeometric series in terms of Kampé de Fériet's double hypergeometric series. A number of finite sums of Kampé de Fériet's double hypergeometric polynomials in terms of different kinds of single hypergeometric polynomials of higher order, are obtained. Some known results of Manocha and Sharma [9], [10], Munot [11], Pathan [12], Qureshi [15], Qureshi and Pathan [16] and Srivastava [26] are deduced as special cases. A result of Pathan [13, page 316 (1.2)] is also corrected here.
