A new ocean wave/sea-ice interaction model is proposed that simulates how a directional wave spectrum evolves as it travels through an arbitrary finite array of circular ice floes, where wave/ ice dynamics are entirely governed by wave-scattering effects. The model is applied to characterize the wave reflection and transmission properties of a strip of ice floes, such as an ice edge band. A method is devised to extract the reflected and transmitted directional wave spectra produced by the array. The method builds upon an integral mapping from polar to Cartesian coordinates of the scattered wave components. Sensitivity tests are conducted for a row of floes randomly perturbed from a regular arrangement. Results for random arrays are generated using ensemble averaging. A realistic ice edge band is then reconstructed from field experiment data. Simulations show good qualitative agreement with the data in terms of transmitted wave energy and directional spreading. In particular, it is observed that short waves become isotropic quickly after penetrating the ice field.

Detailed ionic analyses of Dyer Plateau snow show that major soluble impurities in snow consist of sodium (Na+), chloride (Cl−), nitrate (NO3−), sulfate (SO42−), and acidity (H+). The ratios of Na+ to Cl− concentrations are close to that of sea water, indicating little or no fractionation of sea-salt aerosols. The analyses of core sections from three sites along a 10 km transect show that local spatial variation of snow chemistry in this area is minimal and that temporal (decadal, inter-annual and sub-annual) variations in snow chemistry are very well preserved.

Anion analyses of the upper 181 m section of two 235 m ice cores yield a data set of 485 years (1505-1989) of annual snow accumulation and fluxes of Cl−, NO3−, and non-sea-salt (nss) SO42−. No significant long-term trends are observed in any of the anion fluxes. This is consistent with other Antarctic ice-core records showing no significant anthropogenic atmospheric pollution in the high southern latitudes. Linear regression analysis shows that Cl− flux is independent of snow-accumulation rate. Significant positive correlations are found between accumulation rate and both NO3− flux and background nss-SO42− flux. These results suggest that dry deposition is primarily responsible for air-to-ground Cl− flux while wet deposition dominates the NO3− and nss-SO42− flux (≥90% and ≥75%, respectively). The nss-S042− fluxes provide a chronology of explosive volcanic emissions reaching the Antarctic region for the past 485 years.

Visible and infrared satellite images reveal numerous lineations on the Siple Coast region of West Antarctica. We used 5 MHz ice-penetrating radar to probe the interior and the bed of the ice sheet beneath a lineation at the boundary between Engelhardt Ice Ridge and flat-ice terrain to the south of the Kamb Ice Stream (KIS) outlet. Results show curved reflectors that emerge from the bed beneath 600 m thick ice. The tops of the reflectors extend about 100m into the ice above the bed, where they become almost horizontal. Apparent reflectivity of the horizontal section is about 20 dB less than that of the bed. We conclude that the likely cause of such strong reflection is sea water that was accreted into basal crevasses when the flat-ice terrain was floating. Internal layers are warped downward just downslope from the basal reflectors. It is thought that the downwarping was caused by localized basal melting in the past. The spatial pattern of downwarping suggests that localized basal melting was stronger on the north side than on the south side of KIS; apparently ice/ocean interactions on the two sides of KIS were different.

Antarctic precipitation estimations derived from several new sources are examined in comparison to results found previously. The availability of analyzed atmospheric datasets has been a significant and beneficial tool for atmospheric and climate research for a broad range of research interests. This is particularly true for the polar regions, where the observational arrays are sparsely distributed. in high southern latitudes, a comprehensive assimilation of all available observations, including satellite data, is necessary for an accurate depiction of the atmospheric circulation. Recent st udies have found the operational analyses of the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts to be superior to those of other weather-forecasting centers in depicting the large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns over Antarctica. “Re-analysis” programs at major weather-forecasting centers have produced atmospheric numerical analyses using a “frozen” data-assimilation system. These projects have also derived precipitation and evaporation fields using an ensemble of short-term forecasts. From these new sources, Antarctic Ρ - E (precipitation minus evaporation/sublimation) is compared and evaluated against the long-term glaciological synthesis, as well as results from previous studies. The comparisons indicate significant regional disagreements exist between P — E from the re-analysis forecasts and the glaciological data. For the ensemble forecasting method, the continental-average evaporation is the largest area of uncertainty and differs by an order of magnitude between the rc-analysis datasets. This finding supports the use of the atmospheric moisture budget for determining P — E collectively in atmospheric diagnostic studies for Antarctica.

Blowing snow was produced artificially in a cold wind-tunnel, and various measurements were conducted including particle diameters, concentrations, saltation lengths heat transport and electric charge. The mean diameter of blowing snow particles decreased only slightly with increasing height; in the saltation layer, standard deviation was large and velocities were scattered in a wide range, suggesting the complex dynamic process on taking-off. The mean saltation length ranged from a few cm to 40 cm increasing with wind velocity.

When wind blew without snow drifting, the static air pressure on the snow surface was smaller at higher levels, the vertical pressure gradient being negative. The pressure gradient became positive when blowing snow was initiated eg +9.6 Pa/m at 11.2 m/s and -8.3 °C. The magnitude of à downward force acting on a saltating snow partice caused by the pressure gradient was not large enough to explain the downward acceleration found from photographic analyses of particle trajectories.

Blowing snow particles were charged negatively the magnitude of charge increased with lowering temperature. Increase in vertical heat transfer was found in blowing snow by measuring the temperature of the air at various levels; the increase is reflected on that in the apparent turbulent diffusion coefficient.

We used remote-sensing and in situ measurements of surface accumulation rate, ice surface velocity, thickness and elevation to evaluate the mass budgets of grounded ice-flow regimes that form the Lambert Glacier–Amery Ice Shelf system. Three distinct drainage regimes are considered: the western and eastern margins of the ice shelf, and the southern grounding line at the major outlet glacier confluence, which can be identified with drainage zones 9, 11 and 10 respectively of Giovinetto and Zwally (2000). Our findings show the entire grounded portion of the basin is approximately in balance, with a mass budget of –4.2±9.8 Gt a–1. Drainages 9, 10 and 11 are within balance to the level of our measurement uncertainty, with mass budgets of –2.5±2.8 Gt a–1, –2.6±7.8 Gt a–1 and 0.9±2.3 Gt a–1, respectively. The region upstream of the Australian Lambert Glacier basin (LGB) traverse has a net mass budget of 4.4±6.3 Gt a–1, while the downstream region has –8.9±9.9 Gt a–1. These results indicate that glacier drainages 9, 10 and 11, upstream and downstream of the Australian LGB traverse, are in balance to within our measurement error.

Cirques in the Rassepautasjtjåkka massif currently lack glaciers and the geomorphology indicates that no glaciers occupied the cirques during the Holocene. The current climatic conditions in the cirques can be assessed using available climatic data; air temperature at Rassepautasjtjåkka, summer and winter balances of adjacent glaciers, and general precipitation patterns in northern Sweden. The data suggest that either a significant change in precipitation and wind regime or a moderate change in temperature is required to initiate a cirque glacier in the massif. Formation of a wet-based erosive glacier requires warmer winters with higher accumulation rates, equivalent to a more maritime influence in the area. Studies of current atmospheric circulation suggest that strong west- east circulation, associated with a northerly position of the polar front, is favourable for increased accumulation. Using typical erosion rates from present glaciers, we see that ~ 10% of the last 3 Myr may be required for forming the Rassepautasjtjåkka cirques. This is a significant portion of time since most of the glacial cycles are spent in states of interglacials, maximum glaciation or mountain-based glaciation. Marine sediments from the Norwegian Sea provide indications of minor glaciations back to ~12.6 Myr and, hence, cirque-formation periods are not restricted to Quaternary. Thus, it is possible that many cirque forms have a much longer history than previously recognized.

In 1987 an ice core to the bedrock at a depth of 85.6 m was drilled at the top of Høghetta ice dome in northern Spitsbergen. Chronology of the ice core was examined by tritium and 14C methods showing time gap at about 50 m depth. The age of three bottom ice samples was determined as 4150–5670 year B.P. by 14C method done for frozen bacteria colonies and a frozen petal. This chronology and negative bottom temperature of −9.4°C suggest that glaciers in Spitsbergen shrank considerably during the hypsithermal. The pH of melt-water samples lower than 5.0 corresponds well to large northern hemispheric volcanic eruptions during the last 300 years. Increase of acidity from 30 m depth to the surface may reflect the spread of air pollution to the Arctic during the past 200 years. On the basis of ice-core analyses on electrical conductivity, pH, chemical composition and air bubble pattern, climate and environment in Spitsbergen during the last 6000 years are discussed.

Balance velocities for the Greenland ice sheet have been calculated from a new digital-elevation model, accumulation-rates compilation and an existing ice-thickness grid, using a two-dimensional finite-difference scheme. The pattern of velocities over the ice sheet is presented and compared with velocities derived from synthetic-aperture-radar interferometry for part of northern Greenland and a limited number of global positioning system data. This comparison indicated that the balance-velocity scheme and boundary conditions used here provide a remarkably good representation of the dynamics of the ice sheet inland from the margins. It is suggested, therefore, that these balance-velocity data could provide a valuable method of constraining a numerical ice-sheet model. The balance velocities were compared with the diagnostic velocity field calculated from several different configurations of a numerical ice-sheet model. The general pattern of flow agrees well. The detail, however, is quite different. For example, the large (>300km) ice stream in the northeast is not generated by the numerical model and much of the detailed flow pattern is completely lost due to the limited model resolution and limitations in the model physics.

Measurements made by an underwater glider deployed near the Ross Ice Shelf were used to identify the presence of Ice Shelf Water (ISW), which is defined as seawater with its potential temperature lower than its surface freezing point temperature. Properties logged by the glider included in situ temperature, electrical conductivity, pressure, GPS location at surfacings and time. For most of the first 30 recorded dives of its deployment, evidence suggests the glider was prevented from surfacing due to being under the ice shelf. For dives under the ice shelf, farthest from the ice shelf front, ISW layers of varying thicknesses and depth locations were observed; between 2 m thick (centred at 231 m depth) to >93 m thick (centred at >360 m). For dives under the ice shelf, close to the ice shelf front, either no ISW was observed or ISW layers were centred at shallower depths (116–127 m). Thicker ISW layers (e.g. up to 250 m thickness centred at 421 m) were observed for some glider dives in open water in front of the Ross Ice Shelf. No in situ supercooling (water colder than the pressure-dependent freezing point temperature) was observed.

A non-linear regression model describing the mass-balance distribution of the whole Vatnajökull ice cap, Iceland, for the years 1992–2000 is presented. All available data from some 40 locations over this 9 year period were used to determine the parameters of the model. The regression model uses six adjustable parameters which all have a clear physical interpretation. They are the slope, direction and the height of the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) plane, two altitude mass-balance gradients, and a maximum value of the surface mass balance. It is found that the temporal variation of the observed mass-balance distribution can be accurately described through annual shifts of the ELA. Annual shifts in ELA are on the order of 100 m, which is of the same magnitude as the change expected to be caused by the climate variation predicted during the next decades. A slight trend towards a more negative mass balance is detected during this 9 year period.

An experimental investigation was performed on the kinetic friction coefficient of laboratory-grown, columnar saline ice sliding against itself. Tests were performed on a dual-opposing load apparatus specially manufactured for attachment to an MTS testing system. The mean kinetic friction coefficient, μ, was measured for sliding velocities from 10−6 to 5 × 10−2 m s−1 at temperatures from —3° to —40°C under a contact pressure of about 20 kPa. The ice specimens were oriented with grain columns perpendicular to the sliding interface. At -3°C and at —10°C, three distinct regions were observed: from 10−6 to about 10−5ms−1, μwas nearly constant at 0.5; at velocities from 10−5 to 10−3 m s−1, μ began to drop rapidly to about 0.1; and, above 10−3 m s−1, μ began to level off at ~0.05. The velocity at which μ began to decline increased with decreasing temperature. At temperatures below —10°C, μ increased from ~0.5 at v =10−6ms−1 to a peak value of ~0.7 near a velocity of 5 × 10−5ms−1 and then fell rapidly to about 0.1 at 10−2ms−1. In general, μ increased with decreasing temperature and sliding velocity.

Self-organizing maps (SOMs) provide a powerful, non-linear technique to optimally summarize a complex geophysical dataset using a user-selected number of ‘icons’ or SOM states, allowing rapid identification of preferred patterns, predictability of transitions, rates of transitions, and hysteresis in cycles. The use of SOMs is demonstrated here through application to a 24 year dataset (1973–96) of monthly Antarctic sea-ice edge positions. Variability in sea-ice extent, concentration and other physical characteristics is an important component of the Earth’s dynamic climate system, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere where annual changes in sea-ice extent (temporarily) double the size of the Antarctic cryosphere. SOM-based patterns concisely capture the spatial and temporal variability in these data, including the annual progression of expansion and retreat, a general eastward propagation of anomalies during the winter, and sub-annual variability in the rate of change in extent at different times of the year (e.g. retreat in January is faster than in November). There is also often a general seasonal hysteresis, i.e. monthly anomalies during cooling follow a different spatial path than during warming.

An ice core 103 m long was extracted in 1980 from an altitude of 5340 m on the icefield plateau of Mount Logan, Yukon Territory (lat 60°35ˈN, long 140°30ˈW). The firn-ice transition occurs at a depth of 65 m, corresponding to about the year 1880.

The chemistry of this upper 65 m is apparently dominated by acid-ion species, the peaks in which are provisionally identified with several documented volcanic events. Although the analyses cover only selected discontinuous intervals, it appears that there is no significant long-term trend in the background acidity level of the precipitation at this location over the past century, in contrast to the results from the North American Arctic and Greenland.

Nitrate ion concentration shows pseudo-seasonal variations, which may be associated with stratospheric-tropospheric interactions, although other seasonally linked mechanisms are possible. This result has also been reported for ice-core sequences from Greenland. Other nitrate pulses are tentatively associated with local volcanic events and a possible meteorite event (the entry of Tunguska in 1908). One of the largest short-term sources of sulfate ions is probably from volcanic activity on the north Pacific rim. Background volcanically-quiet nitrate and sulfate ion concentrations are compared with similar Greenland data in an attempt to throw further tight on the origin of the acids.

Since the moisture for this precipitation originates primarily in the Gulf of Alaska, the data has particular relevance to that region. Short-term climatic changes, as reflected by the oxygen isotope (δl8O) record, show some response to the major volcanic-acid events. The influences affecting the δl8O record are listed but not discussed.

We explore spatial aliasing of non-Gaussian distributions of sea-ice thickness. Using a heuristic model and >1000 measurements, we show how different instrument footprint sizes and shapes can cluster thickness distributions into artificial modes, thereby distorting frequency distribution, making it difficult to compare and communicate information across spatial scales. This problem has not been dealt with systematically in sea ice until now, largely because it appears to incur no significant change in integrated thickness which often serves as a volume proxy. Concomitantly, demands are increasing for thickness distribution as a resource for modeling, monitoring and forecasting air–sea fluxes and growing human infrastructure needs in a changing polar environment. New demands include the characterization of uncertainties both regionally and seasonally for spaceborne, airborne, in situ and underwater measurements. To serve these growing needs, we quantify the impact of spatial aliasing by computing resolution error (Er) over a range of horizontal scales (x) from 5 to 500 m. Results are summarized through a power law (Er= bxm) with distinct exponents (m) from 0.3 to 0.5 using example mathematical functions including Gaussian, inverse linear and running mean filters. Recommendations and visualizations are provided to encourage discussion, new data acquisitions, analysis methods and metadata formats.

Ice algae are a key component in polar marine food webs and have an active role in large-scale biogeochemical cycles. They remain extremely under-sampled due to the coarse nature of traditional point sampling methods compounded by the general logistical limitations of surveying in polar regions. This study provides a first assessment of hyperspectral imaging as an under-ice remote-sensing method to capture sea-ice algae biomass spatial variability at the ice/water interface. Ice-algal cultures were inoculated in a unique inverted sea-ice simulation tank at increasing concentrations over designated cylinder enclosures and sparsely across the ice/water interface. Hyperspectral images of the sea ice were acquired with a pushbroom sensor attaining 0.9 mm square pixel spatial resolution for three different spectral resolutions (1.7, 3.4, 6.7 nm). Image analysis revealed biomass distribution matching the inoculated chlorophyll a concentrations within each cylinder. While spectral resolutions >6 nm hindered biomass differentiation, 1.7 and 3.4 nm were able to resolve spatial variation in ice algal biomass implying a coherent sensor selection. The inverted ice tank provided a suitable sea-ice analogue platform for testing key parameters of the methodology. The results highlight the potential of hyperspectral imaging to capture sea-ice algal biomass variability at unprecedented scales in a non-invasive way.

Accumulation and ablation rates over an Antarctic blue-ice area spanning the 14year period 1988–2002 are presented. Data were obtained by direct stake measurements. Large spatial and temporal variations in the net balance were observed without any clear trend over the entire period. There are marginally significant increases in snow accumulation, and in ablation in the blue-ice area farthest from the equilibrium zone (both at the 95% confidence level). The snow/blue-ice transition zone shows no change over the entire period of observation,and the blue-ice area near the zone shows no change in ablation rate over the 14 year period. The mass-balance gradient in Scharffenbergbotnen may have increased during the period 1988–2002. However, the changes are small, especially when compared with the changes observed elsewhere in Antarctica even relatively close to the blue-ice area. This may indicate that the blue-ice areas are relatively stable to changes in accumulation rate, and possibly temperature.

High-resolution δ18O records from a Geladaindong mountain ice core spanning the period 1477-1982 were used to investigate past temperature variations in the Yangtze River source region of the central Tibetan Plateau (TP). Annual ice-core δ18O records were positively correlated with temperature data from nearby meteorological stations, suggesting that the δ18O record represented the air temperature in the region. A generally increasing temperature trend over the past 500 years was identified, with amplified warming during the 20th century. A colder stage, spanning before the 1850s, was found to represent the Little Ice Age with colder periods occurring during the 1470s–1500s, 1580s–1660s, 1700s–20s and 1770s–1840s. Compared with other temperature records from the TP and the Northern Hemisphere, the Geladaindong ice-core record suggested that the regional climate of the central TP experienced a stronger warming trend during the 20th century than other regions. In addition, a positive relationship between the Geladaindong δ18 O values and the North Atlantic Oscillation index, combined with a wavelet analysis of δ18 O records, indicated that there was a potential atmospheric teleconnection between the North Atlantic and the central TP.

The processes involved in the evolution of vertical profiles of Mg2+, Ca2+ and microparticle concentrations, as well as their seasonal variation in surface snow, were studied by weekly sampling from September 2003 to September 2004 of a snow pit on Ürümqi glacier No. 1, eastern Tien Shan, China. The development of the microparticle and Mg2+ and Ca2+ stratigraphy in the snow pit is closely related to the physical development of the snow–firn pack. The sampling site is located at 4130 ma.s.l. in the percolation zone of the glacier, and in addition to the effects of sublimation and wind erosion, melting plays a crucial role in both the physical and chemical evolution processes. During the winter, soluble aerosol concentrations in the surface layers are altered slightly by sublimation and wind erosion, and the concentrations are further modified as the wet season begins in late April. In contrast, soluble aerosol stratigraphy in the deeper layers remains relatively unchanged through the winter. In early summer, as melting occurs in the upper part of the snow–firn pack, meltwater carries chemical species to different depths in the underlying snow–firn layers, such that at the end of the ablation season, all of the surface cations might be leached out from the upper layers. In addition, the possible source of calcium and magnesium is discussed in this paper.

Comparison of the distribution of seasonal variations in surface elevation derived from a firn-densification–elevation model with observed variations derived from ERS-1/-2 satellite radar altimetry shows close similarity in the patterns of the amplitude of the variations over the North Greenland ice sheet. The amplitudes of the seasonal variations decrease from west to east and from south to north, determined by the accumulation rate and the surface-temperature distribution pattern. Several methods of estimating the amplitude of the seasonal variation in the observations are compared, including the use of a three-frequency sinusoidal function derived from the modeled seasonal variation that is asymmetric. The resulting correlation coefficient between the observed amplitude, estimated with the three-frequency function, and the modeled amplitude is 0.66 and the slope is 0.7. Residual differences may be caused by interannual variability in accumulation and temperature and other approximations in the model.
