During the German Antarctic Expedition field season 1989–90. hotwater drilling was undertaken on the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf (FRIS) at 77° S 52°c W to investigate the temperature-depth profile and the bottom-melting rate, which arc significant parameters for mass- and energy-balance studies of the ice shelf. Remeasurements of installed chains in 1991-92 yie1ded reliable results.

Taking glaciological, geodetic and geophysical data on a flowline through the central part of FRIS. we developed a two-dimensional thermal model to reconstruct the measurernents from a steady-state temperature depth profile about 550 km upstream on Möllereisstrom. Considering mass and energy conservation, a basal layer of 350 m of marine ice was calculated with thermal properties, depending on salinity and temperature. In areas with strong basal freezing, almost isothermal depth profiles in the marine ice layer are derived. Further downstream, in areas of basal melting, a nearly cubic temperarure-depth profile is observed.

Seasonal simulations with large-scale coupled ice–ocean models have reproduced many features of the ice and ocean circulation of the Arctic Ocean and the Greenland and Norwegian seas (e.g. Hibler and Bryan, 1987; Semtner, 1987). However, the crude resolution and high lateral eddy viscosity used by these models prevent the simulation of many of the smaller-scale seasonal features and tend to produce sluggish circulation. Similarly, the use of a single year’s atmospheric forcing prevents the simulation of features on an interannual time-scale. As an initial step towards addressing these issues, an 80 km diagnostic Arctic ice–ocean model is constructed and integrated over a three-year period using daily atmospheric forcing to drive the model. To examine the effect of topographic resolution and eddy viscosity on model results, similar simulations were performed with a 160 km-resolution model. The results of these simulations are compared with one another, with buoy drift in the Arctic Basin, and with observed ice-edge variations. The model results proved most sensitive to changes in horizontal resolution. The 80 km results provided a more realistic and robust circulation in most areas of the Arctic and improved the modelled ice edge in the Barents Sea, while also successfully simulating the interannual variation in the region. Although it performed better than the 160 km model, the 80 km model still produced too large an ice extent in the Greenland Sea. No significant improvement in the ice-edge prediction was observed by varying the lateral eddy viscosity. The results indicate that problems remain in the vertical resolution in shallow regions, in treating penetrative convection, and in the simulation of inflow into the Arctic Basin through the Fram Strait.

We carried out snow-pit observations at Nagaoka, Niigata prefecture, Japan, where the snow layers were at the melting point. It was observed that the water content in the snowpack was nearly constant at approximately 10%, and the coarsening rate of snow particles was about 0.4×10–3mm3 h–1, which was in the range between the rate for dry snow and that for snow soaked in water. The isotope change of snow particles by melting and freezing in a closed system under isothermal conditions at 0˚C was modeled. The temporal change in isotope concentration was calculated for wet snow layers, based on the fractionation between snow particles and liquid water in between the particles, in association with the coarsening of snow particles. The results compared well with field observations. These results suggest that the isotope concentration of the pore water that flows downward from the surface contributed significantly to the isotope change of snow particles.

Data from a rawinsonde network are used to provide aerological estimates of monthly precipitation minus evaporation (P – E) averaged over the region north of 70° N. Using published climatological estimates of E, area-averaged P is obtained for each month and year as a residual. Using surface temperatures from the rawinsonde network, the fraction of precipitation falling as snow is then estimated. Over the 1974–91 study period, precipitation and snowfall (water equivalent) have annual means of 26.6 and 19.0 cm. respectively. Assuming a representative aged snowpack density of 330 kg m−3 yields a total snow depth of 57.5 cm. The mean annual cycles of both variables display an autumn maximum, but because of the temperature dependency, nearly all precipitation falls as rain during July and August. Composite analyses reveal that increased precipitation for all seasons and increased snowfall for winter and autumn are favored by a “winter-type” circulation pattern, characterized by stronger troughs over the Atlantic and Eurasian sectors of the Arctic, associated with increased cyclonic activity over the Arctic peripheral seas.

High-latitude interactions of local-scale processes in the atmosphere-ice-ocean system have effects on the local, Antarctic and global climate. Phenomena including polynyas and leads are examples of such interactions which, when combined, have a significant impact on larger scales. These small-scale features, which are typically parameterized in global models, can be explicitly simulated using high-resolution regional climate system models. As such, the study of these interactions is well suited to a regional model approach and is considered here using the Arctic Regional Climate System Model (ARCSyM). This model has been used for many simulations in the Arctic, and is now implemented for the Antarctic. Observations of such processes in the Antarctic are limited, which makes model validation difficult. However, using the best available observations for an annual cycle, we have determined a suite of model parameterization which allows us to reasonably simulate the Antarctic climate. This work considers a fine-resolution (20 km) simulation in the Cosmonaut Sea region, with the eventual goal of elucidating the mechanisms in the formation and maintenance of the sensible-heat polynya which is a regular occurrence in this area. It was found in an atmosphere-sea-ice simulation that the ocean plays an important role in regulating the sea-ice cover in this region in compensating for the cold atmospheric conditions.

The Arctic represents a relatively pristine frontier that is vulnerable to pollution. Substances originating at mid latitudes are transported to the Arctic by atmospheric processes, ocean currents and rivers. These pollutants can accumulate in the Arctic environment. Testing of nuclear weapons, dumping of waste and operation of ships, and nuclear power plants also pose threats.

To investigate possible pollutant pathways we used a multi-level primitive-equation ocean model, coupled to a dynamic-thermodynamic sea-ice model. Coupling included conservative transfer of momentum, heat and fresh water. Atmospheric forcing (wind stress, temperature, humidity, radiation and heat fresh-water fluxes) was supplied by datasets or bulk formulae. Open lateral-boundary conditions for the ocean model were supplied either by datasets (temperature and salinity) or from a larger-scale ocean model (momentum). Two integrations were compared — one used a centred-difference advection scheme and viscous damping, while the other used a better representation of an advection scheme and a sub-gridscale eddy parameterization.

Tracer simulations showed (1) the importance of good representation of numerical advection, and (2) the role of eddy interacting with sea-floor topography (the neptune effect).

An approach to simulate the present Antarctic ice sheet with reaped to its thermomechanical behaviour and the resulting features is made with the three-dimensional polythermal ice-sheet model designed by Greve and Hutter. It treats zones of cold and temperate ice as different materials with their own properties and dynamics. This is important because an underlying layer of temperate ice can influence the ice sheet as a whole, e.g. the cold ice may slide upon the less viscous binary ice water mixture.

Measurements indicate that the geothermal heat flux below the Antarctic ice sheet appears to be remarkably higher than the standard value of 42 m W m−2 that is usually applied for Precambrian shields in ice-sheet modelling. Since the extent of temperate ice at the base is highly dependent on this heat input from the lithosphere, an adequate choice is crucial for realistic simulations. We shall present a series of steady-state results with varied geothermal heat flux and demonstrate that the real ice-sheet topography can be reproduced fairly well with a value in the range 50–60 m W m−2. Thus, the physical parameters of ice (especially the enhancement factor in Glen’s flow law) as used by Greve (1995) for polythermal Greenland ice-sheet simulations can be adopted without any change. The remaining disagreements may he explained by the neglected influence of the ice shelves, the rather coarse horizontal resolution (100 km), the steady-state assumption and possible shortcomings in the parameterization of the surface mass balance.

Ponds that form on sea ice can cause it to thin or break-up, which can promote calving from an adjacent ice shelf. Studies of sea ice ponds have predominantly focused on Arctic ponds formed by in situ melting/ponding. Our study documents another mechanism for the formation of sea ice ponds. Using Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 images from the 2015–16 to 2018–19 austral summers, we analyze the evolution of sea ice ponds that form adjacent to the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica. We find that each summer, meltwater flows from the ice shelf onto the sea ice and forms large (up to 9 km2) ponds. These ponds decrease the sea ice's albedo, thinning it. We suggest the added mass of runoff causes the ice to flex, potentially promoting sea-ice instability by the ice-shelf front. As surface melting on ice shelves increases, we suggest that ice-shelf surface hydrology will have a greater effect on sea-ice stability.

In this work, we formulate a model for the isothermal flow of a (basal) ice–till mixture that is overlain by a layer of pure ice. Such a model is relevant to the case of a glacier or ice sheet possessing a till at its base. To this end, ice is treated as usual as a constant true-density, very viscous fluid, while till, which is assumed to consist of sediment and bound (i.e. moving with the sediment) interstitial water, is also assumed in a first approximation to behave as such a fluid. Since the mixture is assumed isothermal, only the mass- and momentum-balance relations for till and ice need be considered. To complete the model, no-slip and stress-free boundary conditions are assumed at the base and free surface, respectively. By working with the former conditions, we neglect the process of entrainment of sediment into the basal layer, concentrating rather on its flow behaviour and thickness. The transition from the till–ice mixture layer to the overlaying pure ice layer is idealized in the model as a moving interface representing in the simplest case the till material boundary, at which jump-balance relations for till and ice apply. As in the basal layer, till and ice are assumed to interact mechanically at this interface. In the context of the thin-layer approximation, numerical solutions of the lowest-order form of the model show that it is predominantly the thickness of the basal (mixture) layer that is influenced by the ice–till momentum interaction.

The surface mass balance in east Dronning Maud Land has been observed mainlvbv means of the snow-stake method. The surface mass balance generallv decreased with distance from the coast; from more than 250 mm a−1 in the coastal region to less than 50 mm a−1 in the inland region higher than 3500 m in altitude. At Mizuho Station (2230 m a.s.l.). the sublimation was about 50 mm a−1. precipitation was between 140 and 260 mm a−1, and the loss from the surface by theredistribution was estimated to be about 100 mm a−1, which agrees with the surface mass balance estimated as 70 mm a−1 from the grain-growth rate. Around the mountainous area, the balance was small or in some cases negative, where a bare-ice field has developed. In the inland area, 3000– 3200 m a.s.l..the surface mass balance was less than 50 mm a−1, i.e. lower than in the surrounding areas. This low mass-balance area can be explained bv redistribution by the drifting snow. The whole mass input in five drainage basins with a total area of 620 × 103 km2 is 61.2Gton a−1 and the mean surface mass balance is 99 mm a−1.

We examine the role of the propagation of atmospheric mid-latitudes wave trains in modulating the Amundsen and Bellingshausen sea-ice area (SIA), Antarctica, on intra-seasonal timescales (20–100 days). Spectral analysis of passive microwave estimates of SIA in the Amundsen and Bellingshausen Seas for 1979–2004 shows significant peaks on intra-seasonal timescales. Previous studies have suggested that variations in SIA are linked to disturbances in atmospheric circulation and sea surface temperature. We show that extreme SIA anomalies on intra-seasonal timescales lag the propagation of subtropical wave trains in the Southern Hemisphere by approximately 10–15 days. The sign of the SIA anomaly depends on the phase of the wave. We present evidence that the number of disturbances that cause extreme anomalies of SIA on intra-seasonal timescales has increased in the last 14 years.

During the winters of 1990, 1991 and 1992, a field study of stability parameters for forecasting slab avalanches was conducted in the Cariboo and Monashee mountains of western Canada. In a level study plot at 1900 m and on nearby slopes, the shear strength of the weak snowpack layer judged most likely to cause slab avalanches was measured with a 0.025 m2 shear frame and a force gauge. Based on the ratio of shear strength to stress due to the snow load overlying the weak layer, a simple stability parameter and a more theoretically based stability index which corrects the strength for normal load were calculated. These stability parameters are compared with avalanche activity reported for the same day within approximately 30 km of the study plot. Each stability parameter is assessed on the basis of the number of days that it successfully predicted one or more potentially harmful avalanches and the number of days that it successfully predicted no potentially harmful avalanches. Both parameters predicted correctly on at least 75% of the 70 days they were evaluated. The simpler empirical stability parameter worked as well as the one that corrects strength for normal load. For large-scale forecasting of dry-snow slab avalanches, shear frame stability parameters appear to be a useful addition to meteorological data, snowpack observations and slope tests.

Simulations of run-off from the Greenland ice sheet were made as part of a feasibility study for provision of hydroelectric power for Ilulissat/Jakobshavn, West Greenland. The aims were to see if the available short series of run-off measurements are typical of those under present climatic conditions, and to assess possible changes in run-off likely to be caused by gross changes in drainage pattern on the ice sheet. Specific run-off was calculated from climatological data, whilst run-off volumes were calculated by integrating specific run-off over the area of the ice sheet. There have been substantial year-to-year variations in run-off, but the 6 year measurement period is reasonably representative of present climatic conditions. Run-off could be reduced by 21% as a result of changes in hydraulic conditions on the ice sheet without this having a significant effect on the economy of the planned hydro-electric power station.

Ice cores recently drilled to bedrock on the col of Huascarán (9°06′ S, 77°36′ W, 6047 m a.s.l.) offer the potential for a long, annually resolved climate record from tropical South America. This paper presents the record from 1950 to 1993 preserved in microparticle and nitrate concentrations and oxygen-isotopic ratios. Average monthly temperatures from a satellite-linked automatic weather station installed on nearby Hualcán in 1991 are presented. Annual temperatures from local high-altitude meteorological stations, along with the annual Huascarán isotopic record, show a warming trend over the last two decades. The marked preservation of the climate record in oxygen-isotopic ratios on Huascarán is absent at lower-elevation sites, which have been affected by the recent warming. This paper demonstrates the establishment of a time-scale for the Huascarán core, the preservation of the climatic signal with depth and the linkage of the ice-core “proxy-climate” parameters with measured climatic variations.

A new calorimeter was designed for measuring the free water content of wet snow, aiming at simplicity in mechanism and handling as well as high accuracy and speed in measurements. The mass of hot water to melt the sample and the mass of the mixture (snow sample and hot water) are measurable indoors with sufficient accuracy; therefore, in the field we need only two measurements of temperature (T and T ); this calorimeter reduces the time of measurement of one snow sample to four or five minutes. Using artificially made wet snow, having a known value of free water content, 121 tests were conducted. Standard deviation of the error was 0.82%

Hubbard Glacier advanced across the entrance of Russell Fiord in May 1986, transforming the fiord into a lake, which began filling with fresh water. The dam failed in October 1986. The calving terminus of Hubbard Glacier has been mapped with increasing frequency for nearly a century. A mapping interval of a few years establishes that the terminus has made a slow, but accelerating, advance. Recently the terminus has been mapped several times per month using vertical photography, ground surveys, and time-lapse cameras. At this frequency of observation, the terminus position is found to fluctuate seasonally. These seasonal fluctuations are compared with those of Columbia Glacier, where a longer detailed record is available. Although Columbia Glacier is now undergoing a drastic retreat, it continues to have seasonal length changes similar to those it experienced before the retreat began. The lengths of both Columbia and Hubbard Glaciers are extended in the spring, and retracted in the fall. The relatively long period of record for Columbia Glacier shows consistent seasonal variation in length and, when compared with the short period of record for Hubbard Glacier, suggests that there are consistent seasonal differences in length at Hubbard also. The lower Hubbard Glacier diverges, feeding ice into Disenchantment Bay and Russell Fiord, and advances and retreats synchronously over most of its width. The tidal current, which passes through the 250–500 m wide entrance to Russell Fiord, does not affect the seasonal advance and retreat in that area significantly.

In the Himalaya, ice thickness data are limited, and field measurements are even scarcer. In this study, we employed the GlabTop model to estimate ice reserves in the Jhelum (1.9 ± 0.6 km3) and Drass (2.9 ± 0.9 km3) sub-basins of the Upper Indus Basin. Glacier ice thickness in the Jhelum ranged up to 187 ± 56 m with a mean of ~24 ± 7 m, while the Drass showed ice thickness up to 202 ± 60 m, with a mean of ~17 ± 5 m. Model results were validated using Ground Penetrating Radar measurements across four profiles in the ablation zone of the Kolahoi glacier in the Jhelum and nine profiles across the Machoi glacier in the Drass sub-basin. Despite underestimating ice-thickness by ~10%, the GlabTop model effectively captured glacier ice-thickness and spatial patterns in most of the profile locations where GPR measurements were taken. The validation showed high correlation coefficient of 0.98 and 0.87, low relative bias of ~ −13% and ~ −3% and a high Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient of 0.94 and 0.93 for the Kolahoi and Machoi glaciers, respectively, demonstrating the model's effectiveness. These ice-thickness estimates improve our understanding of glacio-hydrological, and glacial hazard processes over the Upper Indus Basin.

Open-water leads in sea ice dominate the exchange of heat between the ocean and atmosphere in ice-covered regions, and so must be included in climate models. A parameterization of leads used in one such model is compared to observations and the results of a detailed Arctic sea-ice model. Such comparisons, however, are hampered by the errors in observed lead fraction, but the parameterization appears to compare better in winter than in summer. Simulations with an atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM), using prescribed sea-surface temperatures and ice extent, are used to illustrate the effect of parameterized lead fraction on atmospheric climate, and so provide some insight into the importance of improved lead-fraction parameterizations and observations. The effect of leads in the AGCM is largest in Northern Hemisphere winter, with zonal mean surface-air temperatures over ice increasing by up to 5 K when lead fraction is increased from 1% to near 5%. The effect of leads on sensible heat loss in winter is more important than the effect on radiative heat gain in summer. No significant effect on sea-level pressure, and hence on atmospheric circulation, is found, however. Indirect effects, due to feedbacks between the atmosphere and ice thickness and extent, were not included in these simulations, but could amplify the response.

Glacier de Sarennes, located in the heart of the French Alps, has been observed closely since 1906 and regularly measured (snow accumulation, ablation and mass balance) since 1948. Several publications have stemmed from this research, such as the 1906 and 1958 glaciological maps and the 1981 and 1991 photogrammetric analyses. In 1992, a field radar campaign determined the ice thickness and allowed the drawing of the bedrock map with reasonable accuracy. The Little Ice Age stage was reconstructed with the bedrock tracks, in 1995.

The above-mentioned documents were digitized, and the computer program Arc-Info permitted the calculation of the successive volume stages occupied by the glacier from 1850 to 1991. Cross-sections and slope profiles illustrate the evolution of the thickness of Glacier de Sarennes during the last 150 years. All of these results, consistent with the variation of the mass balance observed or estimated, show the main conclusion: compared with today, the glacier was about four times more voluminous 90 years ago (i.e. it has lost three-quarters of its ice volume) and five times bigger one and a half centuries ago.
