Icebergs in proglacial fjords serve as pupping, resting and molting habitat for some of the largest seasonal aggregations of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii) in Alaska. One of the largest aggregations in Southeast Alaska occurs in Johns Hopkins Inlet, Glacier Bay National Park, where up to 2000 seals use icebergs produced by Johns Hopkins Glacier. Like other advancing tidewater glaciers, the advance of Johns Hopkins Glacier over the past century has been facilitated by the growth and continual redistribution of a submarine end moraine, which has limited mass losses from iceberg calving and submarine melting and enabled glacier thickening by providing flow resistance. A 15-year record of aerial surveys reveals (i) a decline in iceberg concentrations concurrent with moraine growth and (ii) that the iceberg size distributions can be approximated as power law distributions, with relatively little variability and no clear trends in the power law exponent despite large changes in ice fluxes over seasonal and interannual timescales. Together, these observations suggest that sustained tidewater glacier advance should typically be associated with reductions in the number of large, habitable icebergs, which may have implications for harbor seals relying on iceberg habitat for critical life-history events.

Snow ice (SI) forms from freezing wet snow, known as slush, and contributes to the thickness of level and brash ice. However, the mechanism of snow-slush-snow ice transformation has not been extensively investigated to date, despite the difference in the freezing rate of slush in comparison with water is important for estimating the ice thickness. In this study, we examined the growth of initial congelation ice (CI) and snow ice (SI) in a fresh water tank exposed to outdoor weather conditions in Luleå, northern Sweden. The tank of size 1.8 × 0.65 × 1.2 m in length, width and height was divided into two compartments to facilitate the simultaneous growth of CI and SI. A total of 12 experiments were conducted in the years 2021 and 2022. The transformation from slush to snow ice was achieved by submerging various amounts of snow in the compartments. It was observed that approximately 35% of the initial snow transformed into SI. Snow ice grew 4 mm°C−0.5 d−0.5 faster than congelation ice. The CI growth under SI was 1 mm°C−0.5 d−0.5 slower than the CI growth under CI. This study provides valuable insights for modelling snow-slush-snow ice transformation and designing future laboratory-scale experiments.

Aldegondabreen is a relatively small (5.3 km2) land-terminating glacier located in Nordeskiöld Land of Svalbard, ~10 km southwest of Barentsburg. Cumulative mass balance during 2002–20 equalled −21.79 m w.e., which corresponds to 37% of the total mass loss. The annual mass balance (Ba) varied from −0.24 to −2.19 m w.e., while the winter mass balance (Bw) ranged between 0.36 and 0.85 m w.e. Ba and Bw were strongly correlated with the positive degree-day sums and solid precipitation amounts, respectively, measured at the Barentsburg weather station. There was also a strong correlation (r = 0.76) between Ba and Bw, which shows that winter accumulation amplifies the consecutive summer ice melt by changing the surface albedo. The trend in both observational series is not detectable because the period from 2005 to 2013 was characterized by relatively high Bw and not very negative Ba values. This was also observed on the other Svalbard glaciers, and was related to prevailing north-westerly flows over Svalbard during the summer. Therefore, the decadal periodicity of the Aldegondabreen mass balance follows general archipelago patterns that are determined by regional-scale factors. Thus, the surface mass-balance time series, which is now the longest one in the central part of the Spitsbergen Island, is representative for the archipelago.

The Axel Heiberg Island Expedition of McGill University, Montreal, Canada, led by the late Fritz Müller was the cradle for a number of scientific investigations, not all of them glaciological. During the four years 1969–72, the tundra climate was investigated in the Expedition Area, encompassing about 100 km2 on the mid-west coast of Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut, Canada. This series of studies identified the main features of the tundra climate, clarified its causal processes and contributed to an understanding of the differences between tundra climates and those of the neighboring regions with glaciers, ocean surfaces and boreal forests. A fundamental consideration of climate processes on a global scale was conceived during this time. Some significant results are recorded here to commemorate Fritz Müller’s contributions as a polar scientist and a university educator.

In the face of the faint young sun-climate paradox, the plausible effects of dynamical heat-flux feedbacks on global stability were examined using a coupled high- and low-latitude radiative-dynamical model. The global stability is found to depend very strongly on the vertical heat transport, which is also closely coupled to the meridional heat transport. This coupling and the associated dynamical heat-flux feedbacks, treated within the framework of the radiative-dynamical model, was found to produce a fairly strong negative feedback. Our results indicate that the dynamical heat-flux feedbacks inherent in the climate system may potentially enhance the global stability.

Antarctic researches of the last decades have provided new facts which have made scientists change their ideas. The researches have shown a great difference between the history of the Antarctic and the northern hemisphere glaciation. The former is very old and stable, while the latter was ephemeral. An analogous one to the Antarctic ice sheet in the northern hemisphere is the Greenland inland ice. Both ice sheets are of continental-insular type; the Pleistocene ice sheets were of continental type proper. Icethickness measurements showed the topography of the bed under Antarctic ice and revealed a special type of ice sheet lying partly on the sea-floor: the West Antarctic continental-marine ice sheet. Such ice sheets could exist in the northern hemisphere too. They were especially unstable and their formation and destruction could serve as a triggering mechanism in alternating glacials and interglacials. The main concept is: all the great climatic variations during the Pleistocene were glacioclimatic ones where the feedback mechanism was the most important factor. But there are many details which are uncertain. The Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets are the key regions to research so that problems of glacioclimatology could be solved.

New aspects of the physics of ice movement in glaciers are presented. An analysis of the equation for the energy of a moving ice mass shows that the energy which is dissipated into heat (internal friction in a glacier) occurs not only because of average ice-velocity profiles, as it is commonly considered when simulating glaciers by continuum laminar flow. It also turns out that a significant part of the internal friction is associated with the dissipation of motion energy on internal macroheterogeneities in a glacier: at places where fractures appear and, in the case of a block structure, at points of contact between individual blocks, on ice dams, ice bridges, etc. This mechanism seems to be dominant during rapid ice flow in highly fractured glaciers.

The process was previously examined on the surging Medvezhiy Glacier in the central Pamir Mountains. On Medvezhiy Glacier the above phenomenon was particularly distinctive because of anomalously high ice-movement velocities during a calm period; that is, between consecutive surges (ice velocity amounted to 3–5 m d−1) and because of the block structure of the glacier against the background of its fracturing. Simple measurements of “instant” velocities of a large number of bench marks on the glacier surface, located across the middle flow course of the glacier, established that velocities at all points are of a fluctuating character, which outwardly resemble velocity fluctuations seen in turbulent liquid flow. It turns out that deviations of the “instant” velocity from the average velocity can amount to more than 50% of the latter. Using data obtained from periodic recordings of the “instant” velocity for fixed pairs of bench marks, which were located at different distances (so that it was possible to evaluate the difference in instant velocities), a structural function was constructed. This structural function meets the well-known, so-called Kholmogorov two-thirds law For local isotropic turbulence. This indicates that, as with turbulence, the energy of middle movement is transferred along a cascade of ice conglomerates of decreasing size down to the smallest, limited only by the dimensions of fundamental blocks. At the points of contact at dams and junctions, motion energy dissipates into heat. It is postulated that this phenomenon may have a much broader application; it may also be characteristic of the movement of any fractured mass of solid material.

These findings may be used to formulate a theory which describes the mechanism of auto-oscillations in a surging glacier. According to this theory, the pseudoturbulent character of internal friction during a quiescent period (between surges) is one of the factors which prevents the appearance of a surge as long as possible, thus ensuring the growth of a new active glacier after each ice catastrophe.

These studies also conclude research on the general concept of auto-oscillations of mountain glaciers — the so-called surging glaciers, originally formulated in the course of research on the cause of a surge on Medvezhiy Glacier in 1963. This concept was subsequently adopted and is now widely used in glaciology.

A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technique has been used to image part of the grounding-line region of Bach Ice Shelf in the Antarctic Peninsula. The radar was sledge-mounted and operated in a pulsed mode with a carrier frequency of 120 MHz. The coherently detected output was recorded photographically as in-phase and quadrature components. Because the system was essentially stationary for each measurement, there was no doppler information about the reflecting points as in the more commonly used airborne and satellite-based SARs. Instead, the phase history was used directly to identify point targets by a correlation method.

Three sounding runs were carried out over the grounding line to give views of the area from separate directions. An aperture length of 104 m was necessary to achieve 8 m resolution in the along-track direction for an ice thickness of 290 m. The mapped swath was 88 m wide. Corrections to the data were made to allow for density variations and absorption in the ice. The back-scatter coefficient showed greater variations in echo strength over grounded ice compared with floating ice and texture analysis of the radar image revealed a statistically significant difference between these two regimes.

Stauffer and others (1984) observed in the Greenland ice core from Dye 3 CO2 variations between low values in the range of 180-200 ppm volume and higher values in the range of 240-260 ppm volume, over a period tentatively dated to 30 000-40 000 years B.P. The low values are observed in samples with low δ18O, high particle and chemical impurity contents, representing precipitation from periods of cold climate; the higher CO2 concentrations are measured in samples which reflect warm climatic conditions because of their high δ18O and low impurity contents. The change from one climatic state to the other seems to occur within less than a century. This unexpected observation has received considerable attention from the scientific community. First, the question was posed whether the rapid CO2 variations do indeed reflect atmospheric CO2-concentration changes or whether they are caused by the interaction of gases with chemical constituents in the ice matrix. Secondly, carbon-cycle modellers searched for a mechanism in the carbon system which could produce such rapid changes in atmospheric CO2. Here we try to answer the first question.

Arguments in favour of an atmospheric origin of the CO2 variations are: CO2 measurements on an ice core from Siple Station, Antarctica, show a monotonous increase over the past 250 years, from values around 280 ppm volume to values overlapping closely with the direct atmospheric data which have been obtained since 1958 (Neftel and others 1985). Thus a consistent picture of the anthropogenic CO2 increase has been obtained which is compatible with estimates of the man-made CO2 emissions and with the carbon-cycle calculations of the airborne fraction of these emissions.

In addition, convincing CO2-concentration data have been obtained, from two ice cores from Greenland and four ice cores from Antarctica, for the transition from low (180-200 ppm volume) late-Wisconsin values to the higher (260-300 ppm volume) Holocene values. In spite of considerable differences in temperature, fabrics and chemical properties, the Wisconsin CO2-concentration values for ice cores from different locations lie in a narrow band. The Holocene values show a greater scatter; in particular, the values obtained for the Dye 3 core are significantly higher than those for the other cores. This can be explained by a relatively high temperature, which leads to melting in summer. In refrozen melt layers, CO2 is enriched in comparison with the other air gases. On the basis of these observations we conclude that melt layers are the main factor which can lead to considerable deviations in the CO2 concentration of the air occluded in ice cores from that of the atmosphere at ice formation.

To test if the melt-layer effect was the cause of the rapid changes in CO2 concentration which were observed in the Dye 3 core, increments of the Camp Century core from north Greenland were measured for CO2; they show similarly rapid Wisconsin δ18O and CO2 changes, though they are less abrupt than in the Dye 3 core. At Camp Century the present mean annual temperature is 4.5 °C lower than at Dye 3, and during the Wisconsin the temperature difference was even greater, as indicated by the δ18O values. Because even for Holocene ice in the Camp Century core the melt-layer effect on the CO2 concentration is relatively small, we exclude any similar significant effect on the Wisconsin ice. On the basis of the Greenland ice-core information alone, therefore, we have no indication that the rapid Wisconsin CO2 variations do not represent an atmospheric phenomenon.

Arguments against an atmospheric origin for the rapid CO2 variations stem from detailed analyses of the ice core from Byrd Station, Antarctica. Observation of the increase in anthropogenic atmospheric CO2 in both hemispheres indicates that within a few years CO2 becomes well mixed throughout the atmosphere. Thus the CO2 variations observed in the Greenland core should also appear in the Antarctic core increments which represent corresponding periods. A thorough CO2 study was performed on a Byrd Station core fraction which, according to a tentative time-scale (personal communication from C.U. Hammer, 1987), corresponds to the time interval 5000-55 000 years B.P. (Fig. 1). In what follows, we briefly discuss the data in the 25 000–55 000 years B.P. time interval. A first look reveals that all the data lie in a band between 180 and 220 ppm volume; no values are observed in the 240 and 260 ppm volume band. There are periods showing trends, e.g. from c. 210 ppm volume around 40 000 years B.P. to c. 185 ppm volume around 32 000 years B.P., and periods of strong scattering of the data, e.g. between 41 000 and 44 000 years B.P., with values in the 185-215 ppm volume band. At Byrd Station the annual accumulation is 0.16 m of water equivalent, compared to 0.50 m of water equivalent at Dye 3. This means that at Byrd Station, both the difference between the age of the surrounding ice and the mean age of the air, and the width of the age distribution of the gases, are larger than at Dye 3. In addition, the Byrd Station core does not show the rapid δ18O changes which indicate warm periods with relatively high accumulation. Thus one might argue that in the Byrd Station core the CO2 changes are dampened, due to a significantly wider age distribution of the gases in the ice.

This effect was modelled by Neftel and others (in press). They applied a deconvolution procedure in order to reinstall the range of possible atmospheric CO2 concentrations (see Fig. 2). This procedure results in a somewhat wider band of possible CO2 concentrations; in some periods it is 170-230 ppm volume. But it does not produce the possible high values in the range observed in the Greenland ice cores. All this new information leads to the following ambiguous conclusions:

The new CO2 data for the Camp Century ice core show rapid Wisconsin CO2 changes similar to those in the Dye 3 data, in spite of the differences in the temperatures and the physical and chemical properties of the two ice cores. However, similar CO2 changes do not appear in the Byrd Station ice core (from Antarctica) in the core fraction thought to represent the corresponding time interval.

There are three possible ways to resolve the apparent discrepancy:

(1) In the Wisconsin warm-period ice, CO2 is artificially enriched, due to a process which has not yet been identified.

(2) In the Byrd Station core, the CO2 changes during the Wisconsin are attenuated to a much higher degree than was assumed in the model calculations by Neftel and others (in press).

(3) The increments in both the Greenland and Byrd Station cores which have been investigated do not represent overlapping time intervals, perhaps due to rheological irregularities in the Greenland ice sheet close to bedrock (Staffelbach and others 1988, this volume).

With the existing core material it is difficult to resolve this important problem. The dilemma of the rapid Wisconsin CO2, variations is one of the many important arguments for the recovery of new deep cores both in Greenland and in Antarctica.

To study the relationship between surface topography and satellite laser altimetry waveform, a numerical model that simulates an ideal satellite laser altimeter has been developed. It has a Gaussian beam pattern and a Gaussian pulse shape. Different three-dimensional surface topographies have been used in the simulation to generate waveforms. Using a non-linear least-squares method, the generated waveforms were fitted to theoretical models to calculate surface roughness and surface slope. The outputs from the models were then compared with the values calculated from the given assumed surfaces. There is no way to distinguish between a horizontal, randomly rough surface and a smoothly sloping surface from waveform fitting alone. However, if either the surface roughness or the surface slope can be acquired independently, the other one can be determined through waveform fitting.

Relationships between stable isotopes (δD–δ18O), ice facies and glacier structures have hitherto gone untested in the mid-latitude maritime glaciers of the Southern Hemisphere. Here, we present δD–δ18O values as part of a broader study of the structural glaciology of Fox Glacier, New Zealand. We analyzed 94 samples of δD–δ18O from a range of ice facies to investigate whether isotopes have potential for structural glaciological studies of a rapidly deforming glacier. The δD–δ18O measurements were aided by structural mapping and imagery from terminus time-lapse cameras. The current retreat phase was preceded by an advance of 1 km between 1984 and 2009, with the isotopic sampling and analysis undertaken at the end of that advance (2010/11). Stable isotopes from debris-bearing shear planes near the terminus, interpreted as thrust faults, are isotopically enriched compared with the surrounding ice. When plotted on co-isotopic diagrams (δD–δ18O), ice sampled from the shear planes appears to show a subtle, but distinctive isotopic signal compared with the surrounding clean ice on the lower glacier. Hence, stable isotopes (δD–δ18O) have potential within the structural glaciology field, but larger sample numbers than reported here may be required to establish isotopic contrasts between a broad range of ice facies and glacier structures.

Source areas of snow-melt run-off vary spatially and temporally, with corresponding changes in chemistry of the snow-pack, and influence both timing and quality of snow-pack run-off. In the the alpine basin of Emerald Lake, located in the southern Sierra Nevada, California, U.S.A., we have found that nitrate ion and sulphate ion concentrations in streams were correlated with the amount of snow melt in each sub-basin. Inflows to Emerald Lake had elevated concentrations of , and , which corresponded temporally with the initiation of snow melt in each sub-basin. Concentrations of both anions then decreased as snow melt progressed. The onset of snow melt shifted temporally from sub-basins with a south-westerly aspect to basins with a progressively more northerly aspect. The and pulses also moved, with time, from the sub-basins with south-westerly aspects to those with more northerly aspects. The time span over which the basin experienced these anionic pulses was longer than that for any single sub-basin. Maximum concentrations of and in the lake outflow, which also occurred at the onset of snow melt, were elevated by 100 and 40%, respectively, above their January concentrations in line with increases in inflow, but were sustained for a longer period than that of any inflow increase.

The Q.-flux Goddard Institute of Space Studies (GISS) global climate model, in which an atmospheric general circulation model is coupled to a mixed-layer ocean with specified horizontal heat transports, is used to simulate the transient and equilibrium climate response to a gradual increase of carbon dioxide (1% per year increase of CO2 to doubled CO2). The results indicate that the current GISS model has a high sensitivity with a global annual warming of about 4°C for doubled CO2 . Enhanced warming is found at higher latitudes near sea-ice margins due to retreat of sea ice in the greenhouse experiment. Surface warming is larger in winter than in summer, in part because of the reductions in ice cover and thickness that insulate the winter atmosphere from the ocean. The annual mean reduction of sea-ice cover due to doubled CO2 is about 30% for the Northern Hemisphere. The CO2 experiment has a 70% reduction of sea-ice area and 55% thinning of ice in August in the Northern Hemisphere. Noticeable reduction of sea-ice cover has been found in both historical records and satellite observations. The largest reduction of simulated sea-ice extent occurs in summer, consistent with observations.

The purpose of this study is to identify characterize and quantify local, regional and remote effects of snow cover on western U. S. climate and water resources. An ensemble of predictability and sensitivity studies was made with the U.S. National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Climate Model, version 3 (CCM3) to investigate the relative roles of snow-cover anomalies and initial atmospheric states in the subsequent accumulation and ablation seasons. The suite of model experiments focuses on the direct effect of snow on regional climate anomalies and ultimately will be used to examine the lagged effect of anomalous snow cover on the climate. The set of ensemble simulations presented here looks at the climate-system response to anomalously high and low snow cover at the start of the ablation season over the western U.S.A. These current results suggest that the initial state of snow cover is more important than the initial state of the atmosphere or of sea-surface temperatures because of direct thermal effects on the surface and subsequent indirect, dynamical effects on the atmospheric circulation.

The mass per unit horizontal area, vertical height and density of new snow accumulated on various slopes of 0° to 75° were measured. Although the mass of new snow on these slopes was nearly the same, vertical height increased and density decreased with increase of slope angle. Differences in heights and densities of new snow due to slope angle were explained by considering both accumulation and densification processes on the slopes.

The margins of many ice sheets and ice caps are marked by the presence of alternating layers of debris-laden and clean ice. The role of this ice in flow and sediment transport near the margins of glaciers has been the subject of considerable controversy between glacial geologists and glaciologists for over three decades.

Glacial geologists (Goldthwait, 1951, 1960, 1971, 1975; Bishop, 1957; Souchez, 1967, Boulton, 1970, 1972; Hambrey, 1976) commonly refer to the debris-bearing ice bands as “thrust planes” or “shear planes”, apparently seeing them as reverse faults which transport rock debris from the glacier bed to the surface in a “conveyor-belt-like” manner (Goldthwait, 1975, p. 192). As supporting evidence for the shear-plane mechanism, glacial geologists have offered only qualitative observations and none seem to have actually observed it in action. Glaciologists on the other hand, particularly Weertman (1961), Hooke (1968; 1973), and Hooke and Hudleston (1978), have objected to this concept on physical grounds and have presented convincing arguments for doubting that it is mechanically sound. In spite of the controversy surrounding it, the shear-plane mechanism has gained wide acceptance among geologists and physical geographers and has been perpetuated in recent years through a number of popular introductory geology and physical geography textbooks (e.g. Embleton and King, 1975; Judson, Deffeyes, and Hargraves, 1976; Leet, Judson, and Kauffman, 1978; Press and Siever, 1982; Hamblin; 1982).

The spatial and temporal variability of surface, cloud and radiative properties of sea ice are examined using new satellite-derived products. Downwelling short- and longwave fluxes exhibit temporal correlation over about 180 days, but cloud optical depth and cloud fraction show almost no correlation over time. The spatial variance of surface properties is shown to increase much less rapidly than that of cloud properties. The effect of small-scale inhomogeneity in surface and cloud properties on the calculation of radiative fluxes at ice- and climate-model gridscales is also investigated. Annual mean differences between gridcell fluxes computed from average surface and cloud properties and averages of pixel-by-pixel fluxes are 9.46% for the downwelling shortwave flux and −7.04% for the longwave flux. Therefore, using mean surface and cloud properties to compute surface radiative fluxes in a gridcell results in an overestimate of the shortwave flux and an underestimate of the longwave flux. Model sensitivity studies show that such biases may result in substantial errors in modeled ice thickness. Clearly, the sub-gridscale inhomogeneity of surface and atmospheric properties must be considered when estimating aggregate-area fluxes in sea-ice and climate models.
