Johannes Weertman published his first glaciological paper in 1957 only 5 years after getting his DSc in metallurgy from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. The paper presented the very first sliding law developed quantitatively from first principles, and involved the unconventional idealization of bed roughness using cubic ‘tombstones’ of rock. Since 1957, there has been a great deal of progress in understanding glacier sliding, but few studies, if any, have preserved the original tombstone geometry that was a hallmark of this first theory. The current study presents a partial reanalysis of the sliding process over a bed with tombstone obstacles using modern numerical methods. The result confirms the enduring applicability of Weertman's model as a pedagogical tool and motivates new questions about (1) folding flow near bedrock obstacles that invert normal ice stratigraphy, (2) the presence and role of stress singularities on sharp edges of bedrock, and (3) the validity of a presumption that regelation flow can be plug-like.

We review the various numerical methods that have been developed for calculating the reflection and transmission of ocean waves at a land-fast ice boundary, including recent developments. While an integral form of the solution, found by the Wiener-Hopf technique, has been known for many years, direct numerical computation of this exact solution has been thought to be prohibitively difficult. Instead, several numerical "matching" procedures have been developed, including some that are only approximate, along with asymptotic solutions based on the integral form. Recently it has been discovered that direct calculation of the integral form is feasible, actually requiring less computation than the matching methods. We outline the actual computations required and contrast each method, and provide examples of computation from the integral form.

Analysis of five surges of Variegated Glacier, Alaska, indicates that they all terminated with their surge fronts in the terminal lobe of the glacier, and that different surges penetrated into the terminal lobe by different amounts. Of the five surges, the one that occurred in 1905–06 penetrated furthest into the terminal lobe. The 1964–65 surge affected a greater proportion of the glacier than either the 1947–48 or the 1982–83 surge, caused greater total ice displacements than the 1982–83 surge and appears to have resulted in larger total displacements down-glacier than the 1982–83 surge. Overall, the 1964–65 surge was a significantly larger event than either the 1947–48 or the 1982–83 surge.

Cryospheric change occurs in unequal spaces. Societies living near ice are divided by race, class, gender, geography, politics and other factors. Consequently, impacts of ice loss are not shared equally, and everyone experiences cryospheric changes differently. Responsibility for recent ice loss is also driven by a relatively small portion of humanity: those who emit the most greenhouse gases. Additionally, people who study the cryosphere come from institutions and societies where inequality is often systemic, making research on ice and snow a symptom of and contributor to social inequality. To better understand unequal effects of cryospheric change within and across diverse communities, including research communities, this paper focuses on three areas, drawing primarily from glacier-related work: (1) the social context of cryospheric changes; (2) attribution and responsibility for cryospheric changes and (3) imbalances in knowledge about the cryosphere. Addressing these dimensions of ice loss requires transdisciplinary approaches that connect research to societies and link glaciology and other cryospheric sciences with social sciences and humanities. These concepts, cases and suggestions to help address inequalities also reveal that no singular conceptualization of sustainability exists. Different societies, residents and researchers possess distinct understandings of and goals for ‘ice in a sustainable society’.

During late winter 2007, coincident measurements of sea ice were collected using various sensors at an ice camp in the Beaufort Sea, Canadian Arctic. Analysis of the archived data provides new insight into sea-ice isostasy and its related R-factor through case studies at three scales using different combinations of snow and ice thickness components. At the smallest scale (<1 m; point scale), isostasy is not expected, so we calculate a residual and define this as Ж (‘zjey’) to describe vertical displacement due to deformation. From 1 to 10 m length scales, we explore traditional isostasy and identify a specific sequence of thickness calculations which minimize freeboard and elevation uncertainty. An effective solution exists when the R-factor is allowed to vary: ranging from 2 to 12, with mean of 5.17, mode of 5.88 and skewed distribution. At regional scales, underwater, airborne and spaceborne platforms are always missing thickness variables from either above or below sea level. For such situations, realistic agreement is found by applying small-scale skewed ranges for the R-factor. These findings encourage a broader isostasy solution as a function of potential energy and length scale. Overall, results add insight to data collection strategies and metadata characteristics of different thickness products.

At the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) about 21000 years ago (21 ka BP), the overall mass balance of the Laurentide and Eurasian ice sheets should have been close to zero, since their rate of change of total ice volume was approximately zero at that time. The surface mass balance should have been zero or positive to balance any iceberg/iceshelf discharge and basal melting, but could not have been strongly negative. In principle this can be tested by global climate model (GCM) simulations with prescribed ice-sheet extents and topography.

We describe results from a suite of 21 ka BP simulations using a new GCM (GENESIS version 2.0.a), with sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) prescribed from GLIMAP (1981) and predicted by a mixed-layer ocean model, and with ice sheets prescribed from both the ICE-4G (Peltier, 1994) and CLIMAP (1981) reconstructions. This GCM is well suited for ice-sheet mass-balance studies because (i) the surface can be represented at a finer resolution than the atmospheric GCM, (ii) an elevation correction accounts for spectral distortions of the atmospheric GCM topography, (iii) a simple post-processing correction for the refreezing of meltwater is applied, and (iv) the model's precipitation and mass balances for present-day Greenland and Antarctica are realistic. However, for all reasonable combinations of SSTs and ice-sheet configurations, the predicted annual surface mass balances of the LGM Laurentide and Eurasian ice sheets are implausibly negative. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed, including increased ice-age aerosols, higher CLIMAP-like ice-sheet profiles in the few thousand years preceding the LGM, and a surface of the southern Laurentide just before the LGM to produce fleetingly the ICE-4G profile at 21 ka BP.

Current techniques of cloud discrimination in polar regions, ice surface temperature measurement, sea-ice and snowfield extent mapping often rely on data acquired in the region from 3 to 5 mm. The Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and the recently launched Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on Terra have spectral bands in this region used for these purposes. Approaches often consider the radiance value in this spectral range in terms of a single equivalent brightness temperature. However, this spectral region contains contributions from both solar-reflected and thermal-emitted radiance, and a water ice reflectance peak at 3.7 μm can be highly variable and a sensitive indicator of grain-size in icy particles either in clouds or as surface snow. In December 1992 the Galileo spacecraft, on its way to Jupiter, flew by and acquired images of Antarctica that included spectral coverage in 408 channels in the wavelength range 1–5 μm with the Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS). The NIMS spectra provide a basis for the separation of the reflected and emitted components in this wavelength region. This separation then allows the examination of the observed variation of the reflected component with respect to cloud and surface ice properties. This analysis may help refine current algorithms for cloud discrimination in AVHRR and MODIS using channels from 3 to 5 μm.

Water-temperature structure in the Cosmonaut Sea at 60 68° S, 35 65° E in 1987–92 shows that cold water with a temperature below -1.5°C was present in the coastal region. The Circumpolar Deep Water with a temperature higher than 1.0°C was found below about 150m depth from northeast to northwest of the cold water area. The SSM/I images in 1987–91 indicate that polynya activities were intensive in 1988 and the typical Cosmonaut Polynya was observed; due to weaker activities, the small and sporadic Cosmonaut Polynya formed in 1987, 1989, 1990 and 1991. A coastal polynya was frequently observed every year at about 66° S, 50–60° E. A train of polynyas to the east of Cosmonaut Polynya often appeared. It is considered that the Atmospheric Convergence Line and Antarctic Divergence Region are responsible for polynya activities in the Cosmonaut Sea.

Major soluble chemical impurities have been measured along a 130 m firn core from the Amundsen–Scott Station in order to assess Southern Hemisphere environmental variability over the last millennium. Particular attention is given to the possible impact of the Little Ice Age, a well-known climatic disturbance which occurred in the Northern Hemisphere between about A.D. 1500 and 1900.

Na+, K+, NH4+, Cl+, SO42− and NO3− concentrations were carefully determined in forty-two 40 cm firn sections. Stringent precautions were taken to ensure the analytical reliability of the data set obtained. The average concentrations are (in ng g−1): 11.0 ± 2.5, 0.7 ± 0.4, 0.5 ± 0.2, 31 ± 5.6, 58 ± 11.6 and 103 ± 11.6 respectively (the scatter represents the standard deviation).

No definite trend is detected which could be linked to the Little Ice Age disturbance.

Spatial and temporal trends of remotely sensed sea-ice cover, sea surface temperatures, chlorophyll-a concentration and primary production in the Baffin Bay, Davis Strait and Labrador Sea were analyzed for the 1998–2017 period. We found spatial variability in the trends of these cryospheric, biologic and oceanographic phenomena. For example, in the northern Baffin Bay, we observed decreases in annual sea-ice persistence, yet increases along the Labrador Sea-ice edge during winter, with the latter having significant correlations with broader atmospheric patterns. In general, we observed increases in summer sea surface temperatures across the study region, except a small area of cooling along the southern Greenlandic coast. We also found significant negative trends in April chlorophyll-a and primary production followed by significant positive trends for both biological phenomena in May, owing to anomalously high values in 2014 and 2015. Notably, we found a significant positive correlation between days of monthly sea ice presence in April with May primary production quantities. Finally, we found a significant positive trend in total annual primary production over the study period. This novel finding suggests an important relationship between the timing of breakup along the sea-ice edge and peaks in biological production.

Tidewater glaciers are an important and difficult part of the cryosphere to study owing to their complex nature and often inaccessible and physically challenging environments. The interaction of glacier and fjord processes furthermore presents particular observational challenges. Modelling provides a possible solution to these issues, but, at the glacier scale, the processual complexities require a 3-D full-Stokes approach that is computationally expensive. Additionally, the lack of data for model validation or constraints imposes further obstacles. Despite this, progress on modelling such glaciers with explicit inclusion of all relevant processes is being made. The key remaining challenges are including more realistic representations of calving and coupling 3-D glacier modelling with 3-D fjord circulation modelling to allow inclusion of the effect of cross-fjord circulation. We are confident, however, that these issues can be resolved and will be resolved over the next decade.

On RADARSAT imagery, the southern margin of the onset zone of Bindschadler Ice Stream, West Antarctica, manifests a multi-banded feature, with brightness varying across the bands and oscillating along each band. Ground-based radar profiles across the margin reveal folds in the firn stratigraphy associated with this pattern and provide evidence for correlation between the depth of shallow isochrones and the RADARSAT backscatter intensity on each profile, allowing us to interpret the banded feature for firn-layer geometry in three dimensions. We use a kinematic model of isochrone depth evolution to show how layer folding and the band expression may result from deformation and advection in the near-surface flow field at ice-stream margins, even with steady flow. The model predicts the formation of longitudinally patterned bands when the ice-stream acceleration fluctuates along flow. Concerted study of the planform and stratigraphy of other RADARSAT-detected features on the ice sheets may help us understand their origin.

As more data are recorded in digital form the importance of automatically extracting parameters of glaciological significance increases. This paper addresses the problem, with particular reference to tracking bedrock or internal reflectors in digitally recorded Radio Echo Sounding (RES) data. It has been found that the simplest solution to this problem is a “supervised” system, where operator decisions may be added interactively, either on operator command or upon loss of track. Increasing internal decision making within the program may reduce the number of operator interventions required, but is unlikely to eliminate them completely.

Algorithms are presented and discussed for determining the position of the interface, for predicting the position of the interface in successive records, for determining the loss of track condition, and for re-acquiring track after loss of track.

To understand the formation of hard snow in the field and its relationship to the physical parameters of snow surfaces, we carried out snowpack observations at a flat and snow-covered field in Barrow, Alaska. These observations were performed in the middle of winter and included two drifting snow events. After the end of each drifting snow event, the minimum snow surface density increased slightly with time and there was a rapid increase in the minimum snow surface hardness. There was no rain during our observations. Therefore, the strong bonds among the snow surface particles were not due to melting and refreezing; they formed because of hardening during water-vapor transport under a temperature gradient and also by exposure of the inner snow layer through erosion. As a consequence, the snow formed a hard surface following the drifting snow events.

The transformation of snow to ice under compressive stress is a very slow process unless meltwater is present. A qualitative measure of permeability variation with depth was continuously determined for various shallow-ice cores from the dry-snow zones in both Greenland and Antarctica to investigate this transformation process. Results of the study provide insight into snow densification mechanisms and generally characterize the pore close-off phenomena. Measurements show that bulk densities may be expressed as a function of overburden; pore close-off takes place when the overburden is approximately 3.0–4.5 bar.

We have acquired ground-truth data at Lake Saroma, northeast Hokkaido, Japan, and the surrounding area since 1993 in order to collect data on regional sea ice in the Sea of Okhotsk. The data were acquired in 1999 by polarimetric and interferometric SAR (Pi-SAR), the dual-frequency, fully polarimetric airborne SAR system jointly developed by the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) and the Communications Research Laboratory (CRL), simultaneously with ground experiments. This paper describes the results of polarimetric data analysis of typical sea ice observed in the offshore region near Lake Saroma. The polarimetric parameters used were correlation coefficient and phase difference. Based on the analysis of these parameters, we found that the correlation coefficient between RR and LL polarizations can discriminate four categories including three types of ice and open water.

Snow cover contains various impurities from natural and anthropogenic sources. These impurities percolate into the soil, groundwater and surface water during snowmelt, significantly influencing their composition. We consider the metals content in snow cover in south Sakhalin, Sea of Okhotsk. Samples were taken in February–April 2011 by the Laboratory of Avalanche and Debris-flow Processes of the Sakhalin Department of the FEGI FEB RAS. Sample analysis was performed by the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, FEGI FEB RAS. Overall, the metals present in the highest concentrations were Ca, K, Mg and Na. Other metals have low concentrations at the level of total mineralization of surface water and groundwater. Thus, the main sources of metals in south Sakhalin snow cover are the water surface of the sea and anthropogenic sources.

In the source area of the Ürümqi River, during the glacier ablation season, net radiation is the only heat input to the tundra, averaging 119W m−2 in July and August, more than twice that to the glacier, where additional heat input is contributed by sensible heat. The heat input to the tundra is mostly lost by evaporation, which accounts for 86%, while the input to the glacier is mostly lost by melting. The relatively small heat input to the glacier and the large evaporation rate of its surroundings favour the glacier’s existence. Most precipitation occurs between June and August, accounting for 66% of the annual total. Precipitation increases with altitude in average conditions during the ablation season; the annual precipitation is estimated to be about 650 mm at the mean equilibrium line altitude of 4030 m. This amount is considerably larger than that of the surrounding area. Evaporation is estimated at 270 mm a−1 on the tundra, reducing the runofTin a rather large proportion, and 120 mm a−1 on the glacier. Almost all runoff takes place between May and September, and is mostly concentrated in July and August when the glacier melt is the most intense. When air temperature is high during the ablation period, although the precipitation is less, runoff could peak because of the glacier melt. Based on the measured runoff and estimated regional precipitation and evaporation, the glacier mass balance is calculated and discussed.

Mid -winter flooding of the Drift River was caused by melting of snow and glacier ice during the 1989–90 eruption of Redoubt Volcano. “Drift” Glacier (unofficial name) was beheaded when 110 to 120 × 106 m3 of perennial snow and ice were mechanically entrained by the four largest volcanically initiated flows. The flow volumes were increased by incorporation of the seasonal snowpack on the lower glacier surface and in the flooded river valley. The seasonal snow contributed a volume equivalent to about 35 × 106 m3 of water to the flows, increasing the cumulative flood volume by almost 30%. No large amounts of meltwater were stored on or under the glacier before any of the flows took place. The threat of flooding was significantly reduced after the second major eruption removed the remainder of the easily erodible snow and ice.
