61 espèces de Chironomides ont été capturées (à l'état imaginal et nymphal) dans le torrent froid d'Estaragne ; leurs périodes de vol sont précisées. Sur les 33 espèces rhéobiontes du peuplement, 9 sont abondantes. Diamesa hamaticornis et Eukiefferiella calvescens prédominent sur l'ensemble du réseau hydrographique.

Deux zones se distinguent de part et d'autre d'un ressaut glaciaire. La partie amont du torrent (> 2 130 m) présente les caractères d'un torrent glaciaire et une biocénose riche en Diamesini (6 espèces) caractérisée par Eukiefferiella fittkaui, Paratrichocladius skirwithensis, Diamesa zernyi. La partie aval (2 050-1 850 m) présente les caractères d'un torrent de haute montagne riche en Eukiefferiella (4 espèces) et caractérisée par Eukiefferiella minor et Pseudodiamesa branickii.

Two greenhouses were operated as emergence traps in a stream in southwestern Lower Austria from 1984 to 1989 at a distanceof 28 m from each other. The stream bed under the traps was covered by a metal sheet alternately for one year, thus preventingemergence under the trap with covered bottom so that insects caught in this trap must have come from outside. Theresults have shown that insects from outside constitute a high but un quantifiable proportion of the total catch. In many instancesthere were more insects in the trap with a covered stream bed than in the open one. Therefore the emergence trap method is notadequate for quantitative surface-related studies, including secondary production.

L'imago male de Rhithrogena ourika n. sp., récoltée dans le Haut Atlas (Maroc) est décrite et figurée. Il s'agit de la première espèce de Rhithrogena identifiée en Afrique du Nord.

L'effet de la salinité (0,3 - 0,45 et 2,45 g.L-1) et de la dureté (250 - 500 g.L-1 (CaCO3) sur la toxicité de Al, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni, Zn vis-à-vis de Daphnia magna est étudiée en laboratoire. Les concentrations en ions métalliques varient entre 0,01 et 25 mg.L-1. Les résultats obtenus à 20°C montrent que la toxicité mesurée en CI50 24 h et CI50 48 h (CI = Concentration d'Inhibition) de Cd, Cu, Zn et Al augmente avec un accroissement de la salinité ou de la dureté. Par contre, la toxicité de Ni et Cr est atténuée malgré l'accroissement de la salinité du milieu. L'augmentation de la dureté entraîne une réduction de la toxicité du chrome.

Lumbriculus illex sp.n. is described from the Komarovka Stream, north of Vladivostok. It differs from all other congeners in having single-pointed setae and very long spermathecal ampullae. L. sachalinicus Sokolskaya, 1967 is regarded as its closest relative.

The author reports new collections of 10 water-mite species from the Peloponnes (Greece), Sardinia (Italy), Corsica (France), and Andalusia (Spain). Barbaxonella reverendissima is described as a new species ; first descriptions are given of the male of Bandakia Corsica, the larva of Monotonia tegulata and the deutonymphs of Psammotorrenticola gracilis, Utaxatax ventriplax and Momonides lundbladi. Momonisia phreatica and Bandakia concreta were found for the first time in the Mediterranean region. The zoogeographical significance of the new records is briefly discussed.

Bosminopsis brandorffi, nouveau Bosminidae, se différencie de toutes les autres espèces du genre par l'importance de la région céphalique, l'absence de rostre, le grand développement de l'œil et des antennules, la présence d'un fort talon abdominal. Mâles et femelles ephippiales sont inconnus.

Stylodrilus curvithecus n. sp., collectée dans un ruisseau de Galice (Espagne), est une espèce proche de S. glandulosus; elle s'en distingue essentiellement par la forme des spermathèques et l'absence de ramifications latérales du vaisseau dorsal dans la région postérieure.Mesenchytraeus lusitanicus n. sp. récoltée dans plusieurs rivières de Galice (Espagne) et du Nord du Portugal est décrite. Une redescription complète de Cognettia hibernica Healy, 1975 à partir de 2 exemplaires récoltés au Portugal permet de compléter la description originale de cette espèce.

A natural phytoplankton assemblage from a pond was grown in semicontinuous cultures receiving phosphorus (P) pulses once every 2 or 6 days. The study shows that the structure of phytoplankton assemblage depends on the mode of P supply. Biomass, expressed as total biovolume, was greatest in cultures receiving P pulse once every 2 days. While the total amount of P administered to both pulsed cultures remained similar, differences in structure of the phytoplankton assemblage were observed during the 4 weeks experimental period. The small sized Navicula cryptocephala became dominant in cultures which did not receive P pulses. Therefore, this species seems to be «affinity specialist» well-adapted to a low P concentration. The replacement of the dominant cyanobacterium Gomphosphaeria aponina by the diatoms Navicula cryptocephala and Synedra ulna in the control and P-pulsed cultures might be due to another factor. The large sized Phormidium mucosum and Hormidium sp. were favoured in cultures pulsed with P at the lowest frequency, which seems to be due mainly to their larger P accumulation capacity. Synedra ulna was favoured to the same extent under the 2 and 6-day pulse periods.

La variation verticale des composantes physiques, chimiques et faunistiques est analysée sur des carottes de sédiment prélevées dans la zone profonde du lac de Port-Bielh (Pyrénées centrales). Ces sédiments sont particulièrement fins (100 % < 50 µ) et meubles. Leur structure est remaniée par remise en suspension et décantation ainsi que par l'activité des organismes. La nature du sédiment ne reflète pas la composition chimique du bassin versant. Elle traduit une importante migration des ions en solution.

La densité maximale de peuplement se situe dans les couches superficielles mais la répartition verticale varie selon les groupes. Les modalités de cette répartition sont évoquées.

1° Un schéma d'aménagement a été proposé pour assurer aux habitants de la vallée du Lot des ressources en eau suffisantes en quantité et en qualité. Les points sensibles sur lesquels une action rapide était souhaitée se sont révélés être : 1) les déchets flottants, 2) l'insuffisance des débits d'étiage, 3) les pulsations de débits, 4) les pollutions par rejets domestiques et industriels, 5) le trouble lié aux matières en suspension, 6) la propreté et l'accessibilité des berges.

2° La qualité de l'eau du Lot est surtout diminuée par des rejets industriels en aval de la région de Decazeville, et notamment par des teneurs excessives en métaux lourds. Une priorité absolue a donc été accordée à la réduction des pollutions industrielles déversées par le bassin de Decazeville.

3° Plusieurs objectifs ont été fixés au schéma d'aménagement : 1) eau potable, 2) eau industrielle, 3) irrigation, 4) compensation des consommations, 5) vie piscicole, 6) besoins de l'environnement et du tourisme. Deux scénarios de développement socio-économique de la vallée ont servi de base à la prévision de l'évolution des besoins comprenant l'irrigation, les consommations industrielles et domestiques ainsi qu'à la prévision des pollutions en 1985.

4° Diverses actions ont été proposées pour atteindre les objectifs du schéma d'aménagement : 1) lutte contre la pollution domestique, 2) lutte contre la pollution industrielle, 3) relèvement des débits d'étiage, 4) régularisation des débits d'étiage, 5) réglementation de l'exploitation des gravières, 6) élimination des déchets flottants, 7) aménagement des berges du Lot, 8) contrôle général du programme d'aménagement.

5° Une évaluation des investissements nécessaires est proposée. Une structure pourrait assurer le lien avec les collectivités locales, la conduite et le contrôle du programme.

Typically, lotic caddisflies attach their mineral pupal cases to cobbles in riffles, where rapid flows facilitate respiration but also decrease case-building material availability through erosion. Effects of local grain availability on grain quantities in and architecture of (per capita grain size use) pupal cases should be more important in Resident Construction Workers (RCWs, building immediately before pupation with minerals collected near the pupation location) than in Itinerant Construction Workers (ICWs, building months before pupation with minerals collected distantly from the pupation location). I tested these hypotheses analyzing mineral grain sizes in pupal cases and streambed sediments of cobble habitats in riffles of five running water types (headwater to large river in different regions) at baseflow or exceptional droughts. When pupae were abundant, the data supported both hypotheses at the local scale of samples, as grain size use by RCWs (as a group) but not by ICWs increased across all sites with local grain availability and abundant taxa among the former responded with four types of case-architecture modifications to grain size shortage. The data also supported the idea that at larger scales such as river or habitat types, mineral grains may be a limited resource for caddisflies building pupal cases with them. These findings suggest that water currents in streams or near shores of lakes and oceans that erode finer mineral grains can create conflicts in resource requirements for invertebrates that build with locally occurring finer mineral grains and simultaneously need high oxygen renewal rates and coarse grains for attachment.

The effects of temperature on the life table, and of seston quality on the individual growth and reproduction of cladocerans from a tropical lake were tested in the laboratory. Life-table experiments were carried out at 17°C, 23°C, and 27°C. Growth bioassays tested the influence of natural seston fractions, separated by net filtration, on cladocerans. The treatments were: (1) total seston plus Scenedesmus spinosus (1 mg C.L−1), (2) seston ≤36 μm, and (3) seston >36 μm. Phytoplankton composition, density, and biomass were evaluated during growth experiments, together with sestonic carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus concentrations. The intrinsic rates of natural increase were higher for Moina micrura and Daphnia ambigua at 27°C compared to 17°C. The age at first reproduction of both species was delayed at 17°C. Growth rates and fecundity of M. micrura were higher in the seston fraction ≤36 μm than in the fraction >36 μm. Higher growth rates and fecundity of Moina minuta were observed in the seston enriched with the green alga in comparison to the seston ≤36 μm and >36 μm. Bosmina longirostris was unable to reproduce at 17°C and to grow in the seston >36 μm in one experiment. High densities and/or biomass of large colonial and filamentous algae present in the larger seston fraction could have contributed to reduce growth and reproduction. Episodes of food-quantity limitation may occur, but there was no evidence of mineral limitation, although seston C∶P and C∶N ratios were always above the limiting values assumed for temperate water bodies. The C∶P and C∶N ratios are highly influenced by carbon that originates primarily from resuspended detritus from the lake.

L'analyse des sédiments de quinze stations de l'Ill et de ses affluents a révélé l'existence de contaminations par les métaux lourds qui sont associées, dans la majorité des sites prospectés, à une forte charge en matières organiques. Les peuplements d'oligochètes inféodés aux sédiments fins sont dominés par des espèces résistantes à la pollution (Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, Tubifex tubifex, Pristinella jenkinae...) ou ubiquistes (Aulodrilus pluriseta). Les fortes contaminations métalliques des sédiments sont généralement associées à des valeurs de l'indice oligochètes IOBS ≤ 1 et à des effectifs ≤ 1000.0,1 m-2. Elles sont corrélées négativement avec le pourcentage de Tubificidae avec soies capillaires et positivement avec le pourcentage de Tubificidae sans soies capillaires. Les métaux semblent perturber la reproduction in situ des oligochètes. Les adultes de Tubificidae sont en général moins résistants que les immatures et la stratégie de reproduction par voie asexuée pourrait constituer un facteur de résistance aux contaminations métalliques.

The short-term stimulation of production, due to marine-derived nutrients (MDN) from spawning salmon, is well documented for certain trophic levels in stream communities (e.g., algae and insect biomass). The effect of these nutrients on the stream ecosystem as a whole, however, remains unclear especially later in the year. Trichopterans have been shown to feed on salmon and other fish carcasses and there is evidence for greater growth rates in the presence of salmon tissue. To address the question of long-term MDN subsidy on trichopterans, we investigated the growth of three limnephilid caddisflies in the spring in the Harris River on Prince of Wales Island, Southeast Alaska. The Harris River has a natural waterfall barrier to salmon and receives large runs of pink (O. gorbuscha) and chum (O. keta) salmon each fall. We selected two shredding caddisflies (Onocosmoecus unicolor) and (Psychoglypha spp.) and one facultative scraper, (Dicosmoecus atripes) for our study. We had two objectives : 1) compare the spring growth of larval caddisflies in a stream section that receives a large autumn run of salmon with their growth in a stream section that is blocked from receiving salmon (due to an impassable waterfall), and 2) compare the growth of shredders with that of a facultative scraper when provided either leaves or biofilm on rocks as food.

Insects were placed in growth boxes in May 2001 with either conditioned alder leaves or stream rocks as food sources. The boxes were placed along with temperature loggers in both the salmon (below the waterfall) and non-salmon (above the waterfall) reaches. The boxes were removed 40 days later. In-stream samples were taken of each caddisfly initially and at the end of the experiment to establish in-stream growth versus growth in the boxes. All larvae were coaxed from their cases, measured for total wet length, dried and weighed. Only D. atripes and Psychoglypha spp. were growing during our experiment and both showed very high relative growth rates in the Harris River. Psychoglypha spp. and O. unicolor were both significantly larger in the leaf boxes and D. atripes was significantly larger in the rock boxes. Both D. atripes and Psychoglypha spp. had significantly greater relative growth rates between food types (on biofilm on rocks and leaves respectively). These results support the notion that D. atripes are most likely facultative scrapers at least in their first year of growth. None of these caddisflies showed differences in their final mean weights or relative growth rates between stream sections, suggesting no effect of MDN on their spring growth in the Harris River. Further research on caddisfly communities in the fall and winter will help clarify if MDN has an influence on the abundance and life history of these species closer to the salmon run. This study questions the long-term influence of MDN on stream communities, particularly those populations that do most of their production in the spring, months after salmon carcasses are no longer visible.

Nitrogen stable isotope composition (δ15N) of particulate organic matter (POM) has been used to infer dominant nitrogen cycling processes in lakes. However, very few studies have compared the isotope variations in lakes along trophic state and other biogeochemical gradients. Here we report an analysis of δ15NPOM and selected environmental variables from 96 subtropical lakes to assess the patterns and controls of isotope variations. Results indicate that δ15NPOM values varied from −2.8 to 13.2‰ and were not significantly correlated with total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN) and chlorophyll a (Chl a). The 15N depletion in POM was found across the entire trophic gradient and likely reflected contributions from planktonic nitrogen fixation. The 15N enrichment was attributed to high primary production and the contributions of anthropogenic wastes in eutrophic lakes, and the presence of microzooplankton in the water samples of the oligotrophic lakes. The δ15NPOM was negatively correlated with water color and positively correlated with pH. Because water color is indicative of light availability which affects phytoplankton growth and pH is significantly correlated with Chl a concentration in the study lakes, the close relationship between water color, pH and δ15NPOM therefore suggests primary productivity-driven isotope fractionation. Results from this study did not reveal the importance of trophic state, nitrogen concentration and surface area to the variations of δ15NPOM and points to the complex interactions of nitrogen cycling processes in lakes with diverse biogeochemical features.

Le présent article constitue la deuxième partie d'un triptyque consacré à la classification biologique (parties I et II) de 9 lacs de la Franche-Comté jurassienne en relation avec les facteurs écologiques (partie III). Cinquante-quatre taxons ont été répertoriés par l'application d'un protocole original d'analyse comparative de la macrofaune des sédiments (Verneaux et al. 1993a). Appliquées à quarante-deux taxons déterminés au genre, des analyses factorielles des correspondances permettent de sélectionner vingt-trois taxons (taxons repères) hiérarchisés par analyse de la distribution bathymétrique de leur densité relative et de leur fréquence. Utilisés pour caractériser les peuplements benthiques à 4 profondeurs (Z0 : 2 m, Z1 : 0,25 Zmax, Z2 : 0,50 Zmax, Z3 : 0,75 Zmax) ils permettent d'établir une classification des systèmes lacustres qui est alors comparée à une précédente classification obtenue par analyse de la biodiversité en zone littorale (B0 = v0 √d0) et de l'évolution de la variété avec la profondeur relative exprimée par un indice de déficit taxonomique fi = kvi/v0 (Verneaux et al. 1993a). Cette étude de la nature de la faune montre : — qu'en zone littorale, où les conditions mésologiques sont optimales, les systèmes étudiés, non pollués globalement, possèdent tous des taxons repères sensibles et se différencient essentiellement par le critère adéquat quantitatif B0, — que la modification de la nature de la faune avec la profondeur constitue un critère d'appréciation du mode de fonctionnement des systèmes susceptible de compléter utilement l'indice de déficit taxonomique fi. Ce travail souligne la nécessité d'associer, en matière de typologie, une analyse des 3 critères fondamentaux que sont la variété, la densité et la nature de la faune.

Les effets des rejets de matières organiques sur les Oligochètes du Bief Rouge se traduisent par le développement de trois espèces qui prolifèrent au détriment des autres Oligochètes : T. tubifex, N. elinguis, S. heringianus (et, dans une certaine mesure, N. communis). Par contre, ni L. hoffmeisteri ni L. udeke-mianus n'atteignent de densités élevées. Tout en soulignant l'utilité des Oligochètes en tant qu'indicateurs de la qualité des eaux, l'auteur montre que les associations d'espèces polluorésistantes peuvent varier suivant le type de cours d'eau envisagé et son degré de contamination.

Un inventaire des Chironomidés de l'Oued Martil est effectué : 95 espèces ont été recensées dont 14 sont nouvellement citées pour le Maroc. Cet inventaire porte le total des espèces actuellement connues du Rif à 121 et celui du Maroc à 256. La majorité des espèces ont une large répartition paléarctique, 7 espèces ont distribution méditerranéenne ; 3 espèces sont afrotropicales et 2 espèces panpaléotropicales.
