The distribution and ecological data base of Vaucheria bursata, V. frigida, V. geminata, V. racemosa, V. erytrospora, V. canalicularis,and V. debaryana occurring in streams of the Kraków-Czestochowa Upland (Poland) are provided.

We analysed the responses of Anabaena doliolum to elevated levels of copper and zinc in batch and semi-continuous cultures. Approximately 10, 4 and 8 and 5-times greater inhibition in final yield of A. doliolum occurred at 1, 2 μM Cu and 2.5 and 5 μM of Zn, respectively, in semi-continuous culture in comparison to batch culture. Protein, chlorophyl a and carotenoid contents of A. doliolum showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher inhibition by test metals in semi-continuous culture than in batch culture. The greater sensitivity of different parameters of the test organism was related to the high metal content of the cells grown in semi-continuous system. Moreover, enhancement of pH of the culture suspension in batch culture showed a negative relationship with metal accumulation, and therefore with toxicity. This was due to decrease in free ionic concentrations of test metals. Carotenoids acted as a metal detoxifying agent by minimizing metal-induced inhibition in batch culture as was evident from its negative relationship with metal toxicity.

Changes in body shape of the rotifer Keratella quadrata in a pond were recorded over the course of half a year (endof November 1981 to beginning of June 1982). Body and caudal spine lengths increased from November until the endof February, and then decreased until June. Such changes were not significantly correlated consistently positively ornegatively to water temperature, pH, hardness, food levels or copepod numbers. The individuals present during the firsthalf of the study period corresponded most closely to the literature descriptions of the group or subspecies quadrata,while those present during the second half resembled the form, group or variety dispersa. The first half of the studyperiod was characterized by water of relatively low temperature, low pH and high hardness, while, for the second half, temperature and pH increased and hardness decreased.

The distribution of 37 species of Plecoptera in the Spanish area of the Duero basin is studied. A factorial analysis ofthe data indicates that current and substrate are the major factors controlling the distribution of the stonefly nymphsin the area. Water temperature and periodical drought have also a marked influence on such distributions.

L'étude de la dynamique saisonnière du phytoplancton dans le lac de Pareloup a été réalisée dans le cadre plus général de la mise en œuvre d'un modèle de fonctionnement de ce réservoir en vue de sa gestion. La biomasse (poids frais µg.l-1 et chlorophylle a) et la densité cellulaire ont été suivies de mars à novembre pendant deux années. Le maximum annuel de phytoplancton (biomasse et densité cellulaire) se situe au printemps ; il est dominé par les diatomées dont le déclin est initié par la carence en silice du milieu et, sans doute, par des concentrations cellulaires en chlorophylle a minimales. Une phase claire résulte de la sédimentation des diatomées et se prolonge pendant tout l'été. Cette période estivale se caractérise par une forte production primaire et une faible biomasse, biomasse régulée par la prédation. Avec le brassage automnal, de petites espèces connaissent une croissance rapide qui s'exprime seulement en densité cellulaire; la faible augmentation des valeurs de biomasse par rapport à celles de l'été est due essentiellement à la présence de Gonyostomum semen et au léger renouveau des diatomées. Les différentes phases du développement du phytoplancton sont analysées et confrontées au modèle P.E.G. proposé par Sommer et al. (1986). La mise en place de la stratification thermique est l'élément fondamental dans le fonctionnement du réservoir de Pareloup ; chaque année, elle détermine le départ d'une succession phytoplanctonique de type cyclique.

A strictly phylogenetic classification of the supergeneric taxa within the subfamily Timpanoginae includes the Attenellini, n.tribe, consisting of Attenella Edmunds ; the Eurylophellini, n. tribe, consisting of Dentatella Allen, n. stat., and EurylophellaTiensuu ; and the Timpanogini, n. tribe, consisting of Timpanoga Needham and Dannella Edmunds, n. stat. Dentatella danutae McCafferty, n. sp., is described from larvae taken from a stream in southern Québec, Canada. The new species differs from the obviously closely related D. bartoni (Allen) by possibly striking coloration differences as well as numerous slight structural differences.

The diagnostic features of the African species of the monotypic subfamily Diplodontinae K. Viets, 1936 are discussed. D. chutteri K.O.Viets, 1980 obviously represents the outgroup of all remaining species. D. scapularis Dugés, 1834 and D. semiperforatus Walter, 1925, both in Africa restricted to the palaearctic part, are sister species characterized by synapomorphic character states in the genital field and shape of palps and legs. Diplodontus schaubi gracilirostris Lundblad, 1942 is elevated to species rank. Two species from Madagascar are described as new to science, with morphological characteristics and a habitat preference so far unknown in this genus. Obviously, they have evolved particular adaptations under long term stable conditions in isolated rain forests of N and E Madagascar. A new diagnosis is proposed for the subfamily Diplodontinae K.Viets, 1936.

While the impacts of groundwater contamination on interstitial invertebrate communities are well studied, very few work have examined other potential disturbance resulting from agricultural practices. In the present study, the interstitial crustacean fauna was studied in an alluvial aquifer characterized by intensive cereal irrigation, to test the influence of groundwater extraction on the assemblage characteristics (abundance, diversity, persistence, species distribution patterns). Micro- and macrocrustaceans were sampled at 4 seasons in 15 wells with contrasted groundwater use (cereal irrigation / domestic use / no groundwater use) scattered over a 250 km2 alluvial floodplain. The aquifer harbored diverse assemblages dominated numerically and specifically by cyclopoids. Total abundance, diversity expressed using species richness or Shannon index, overall persistence in species composition did not vary between stations whether micro- or macrocrustaceans were considered. Yet, marked differences in the cyclopoids assemblages composition were found in relation to groundwater utilization. Disturbed irrigation wells were dominated by epigean species, while hypogean species were mainly found in less impacted domestic wells. In contrast, amphipods/isopods did not exhibit particular assemblages composition between irrigation, domestic or abandoned wells. The differential responses between micro- / macrocrustaceans, epigean / hypogean species emphasized that levels of disturbance are strongly taxondependent. At the scale of the aquifer, these results suggest that groundwater extraction resulting from intensive irrigation has to be considered as a potential disturbance for the interstitial communities.

L'application de techniques d'analyses multivariées à l'inventaire malacologique de 23 lacs d'altitude moyenne montre que, suivant l'axe 1 exprimant "l'effet profondeur", s'effectue une simplification verticale des peuplements. L'axe 2 semble essentiellement traduire une modification des malacocénoses sous l'effet d'une accumulation croissante des matières organiques dont l'importance sur la structure et la distribution des peuplements est ainsi mise en évidence.

48 stations ont été prospectées sur les oueds du Nord-Ouest de l'Algérie, entre 1145 m d'altitude et le niveau de la mer : 20 espèces de Simulies ont été récoltées. Un genre, un sous-genre et 7 espèces sont cités pour la première fois en Algérie ; une espèce est nouvelle pour l'Afrique du Nord.Mis à part Simulium (Withelmia) pseudequinum, d'origine orientale, la faune appartient à la zone paléarctique (au Sud de la sous-région méditerranéenne) et s'adapte à de nouvelles caractéristiques des cours d'eau (température, salinité...) ; ainsi, les espèces de plaine de la bordure septentrionale méditerranéenne remontent dans un crénal de moyenne altitude et se retrouvent ici avec les espèces de sources.Les éléments orophiles sont très peu représentés.

La larve au dernier stade d'Ecdyonurus rothschildi Navás est figurée et décrite comparativement à celles d'E. aurantiacus (Burmeister) et d'E. dispar (Curtis).

During the summers 1992 and 1993, 15 species of Clinocerinae (Empididae) were collected on Corsica. The illustrated descriptions of six new species are given: Roederiodes wagneri sp. n., Clinocera (Kowarzia) cataractae sp. n., Wiedemannia (Chamaedipsia) ariolae sp. n., Wiedemannia (Chamaedipsia) bravonae sp. n., Wiedemannia (Philolutra) kallistes sp. n. andWiedemannia (Wiedemannia) martini sp. n.. Their systematic relations with other species are discussed. Informations is given about their geographic distribution and their habitats.

Des investigations malacologiques ont été réalisées en 1974 et en 1994-1995 dans trois prairies de la Haute-Vienne afin depréciser les caractéristiques des gîtes à limnées lorsque les parcelles sont abandonnées ou modifiées par l'application de mesures agronomiques. L'abandon d'une prairie et l'invasion de ragondins se sont traduits par des modifications dans la distribution des limnées. Lymnaea cf. fuscus a déserté le fossé principal de drainage pour coloniser les rigoles et les couloirs créés par ces rongeurs,ce qui s'est traduit par un accroissement important de la superficie du nouveau gîte. Les effectifs moyens de L. cf. fuscus et de L. truncatula ont augmenté aux dépens de ceux de L. glabra. Un autre mollusque aquatique, Physa acuta, a envahi le fossé laissé libre. Le curage des rigoles dans les deux autres prairies et leur invasion par une ou deux espèces aquatiques (L. ovata, Potamopyrgus antipodarum ou Physa acuta) se sont traduits par une extension dans la superficie du gîte aussi bien pour les mollusques colonisateurs que pour L. glabra et L. truncatula. Les effectifs des trois premières espèces sont assez importants dans ces deux rigoles ; par contre, on note une réduction du nombre des deux limnées.

Sublittoral and profundal chironomid community structure, depth distribution and relationship to the trophic level of the waters were investigated in Lake Vico (Central Italy) during 1985-1986. PCA analysis indicated a depth-dependent group of true profundal stations at 20, 30 and 40 m depths, characterized by Micropsectra, Procladius, Microtendipes, Tanytarsus and Paratendipes, and a group of 10 m stations, characterized by Cryptochironomus, Polypedilum bicrenatum gr., Cladopelma lateralis gr. and C. laccophila gr., representing the sublittoral features of this depth. In agreement with the chemical data, the chironomid community indicated a mesotrophic condition of Lake Vico, with a tendency towards an increasing trophic level in the deepest zone. A significant role in revealing future trophic changes in the lake may be attributed to the key-indicator Micropsectra.

Les cinétiques de traçage isotopique des échanges entre les ions phosphates en solution et les sédiments en suspensionpermettent de définir des indices caractérisant les potentialités de transfert du P entre les sédiments et l'eau. L'utilisation de cette méthode nous a permis de déterminer une quantité de phosphore isotopiquement échangeable dans différents types de sédiments ; cette valeur est fonction de la durée d'échange, fixée ici à 24 heures (E24).La dilution du sédiment provoque le passage en solution d'une fraction croissante de ce pool d'ions échangeables selon une loi Q = a.E24.Sb qui permet de calculer la concentration (Q) de phosphore dans l'eau connaissant la masse(S) de sédiments en suspension. L'épuisement du P le plus mobile et l'allongement de la phase d'adsorption qui résultent de la dilution du sédiment entraînent une modification des cinétiques d'échange.

An account is given of the chemistry and phytobenthos of streams in the vicinity of two old lead mines in the Hautes-Pyrénées south of Lourdes. All of the nine sites studied had elevated levels of aqueous Zn, and also in most cases of Cd and Pb. There was some evidence that increasing levels of heavy metals led to a decreased flora, but 30 species were recorded at sites with > 10 mg l-1 Zn. The most restricted flora occurred at a site with a conspicuous white precipitate, consisting largely of anglesite; here only three species were present: Schizothrix sp., Pohlia cruda, Solenostoma crenulatum.

Collections of ostracods from various habitats in and around Lake Inari, Finnish Lapland, provide the first record of these crustaceans from Finland north of the Arctic Circle. From a total of 35 sites visited, 14 species were collected, out of which four appeared to be new to Finland: Fabaeformiscandona lapponica, Pseudocandona pratensis, Eucypris pigra and Paralimnocythere relicta. Two major assemblage groups were recognised by clustering classification and multi-dimensional scaling ordination, one dominated by Cyclocypris ovum, the second by Candona candida. Taxonomic diversity of the most assemblages was of expected range based on the inventory of 53 freshwater species of Finland.

Stream restoration is an important process affecting the ecological health of stream ecosystems. There have been numerous cases of restoration, dealing with either structural or biological changes. In Korea, most restoration projects have merely dealt with improving hydrological characteristics or water quality; however, in recent years the improvement of ecological characteristics has been an increasing focus for restoration projects. In this study, we utilized data collected from 5675 stream sites in May 2007 to discover general patterns of anthropogenic modification in Korean streams. The survey results after application of the stream modification index (SMI; presence or absence type; high scores indicate more disturbed) provided a general distribution of disturbed/undisturbed streams or rivers in the watershed. We then compared the level of modification with the socio-geographical patterns (population, land coverage, elevation, and slope) for the watershed. The results show that streams in highly populated areas suffered from human modification compared with other well-preserved stream sites. In metropolitan cities, urbanized areas had positive relationship as identified by a high SMI. On the other hand, agricultural land cover identified an SMI increase for lowland river area. In general, mountainous streams possessed a better status in stream morphology due to different land-cover patterns (i.e., mainly forested area); however, some mountainous areas were impacted by concentrated summer rainfall. We could distinguish the forcing variables (i.e., land use pattern) for the disturbed streams through a comparison between the SMI and geographical information; the SMI application was able to identify areas of high necessity for restoration.
