Neuf lacs naturels du Massif de Néouvielle (Hautes-Pyrénées), étages entre 2 100 m et 2 325 m d'altitude, sont décrits et les résultats de mesures physiques et chimiques, effectuées durant quatre années consécutives, sont donnés dans ce travail.

Dans le vallon d'Estibère, quatre lacs (1,1 à 2,4 hectares - 3,2 à 5 m de profondeur) s'échelonnent de 70 en 70 m d'altitude. Ils constituent un remarquable exemple de l'évolution des ceintures végétales et du comblement des cuvettes par formation de tourbières. Quatre petits lacs du Vallon de Port-Bielh ont également été étudiés. Beaucoup plus important, le lac de Port-Bielh (16,5 hectares - 19 m de profondeur) a fait l'objet d'une étude plus suivie.

Selon leur altitude ,ces lacs sont gelés 6 à 7 mois par an. Par leurs caractéristiques morphométriques et physico-chimiques, le lac de Port-Bielh et le lac Inférieur d'Estibère se différencient des 7 autres lacs.

Le lac de Port-Bielh

Son régime thermique (fig. 8) permet de le classer dans les lacs de type dimictique subpolaire. La stabilité thermique maximum se situe à la mi-juillet (106 à 128 g-cm.cm2) ; elle décroit ensuite progressivement et devient nulle début septembre. L'apport estival de chaleur (7 186 à 8 842 cal.cm-2) représente 43 % seulement du budget calorifique annuel évalué à 17 500 cal. cm-2 pour 1968/69.

La transparence est élevée et la profondeur de visibilité du disque de Secchi est de 13,5 m en moyenne.

En été, l'eau faiblement minéralisée, a une conductivité électrique à 18° C de l'ordre de 23 mhos. La conductivité augmente nettement en profondeur pendant l'hiver où elle peut atteindre 57 mhos (fig. 11). Les bicarbonates représentent 73 % à 93 % des sels totaux. La concentration en ions Ca++(3,5 à 4,4 mg/l) et Mg++ (0,25 à 0,75 mg/l) augmente légèrement au niveau de la vase en hiver. Le fer est à l'état de traces pendant l'été ; il atteint des teneurs de 1,5 mg/l au fond du lac en hiver.

Le pH (fig. 13), toujours basique, présente d'importantes variations (7,25 à 9,52). Il augmente progressivement au cours de l'été surtout au delà de 10 m de profondeur où les valeurs sont généralement supérieures à pH 9 en août. Cette alcalinisation est la conséquence d'une diminution de la quantité de CO2 libre qui devient pratiquement nulle en été. La quasi totalité du CO2 total se présente alors sous forme de bicarbonates (fig. 14).

Une forte concentration en oxygène dissous (fig. 15 ; 120 à 135 % des teneurs à la saturation) correspond aux valeurs élevées du pH en août. La circulation automnale ramène ces teneurs à une valeur proche de la saturation. Sous la glace, la consommation d'O2 peut être évaluée à 0,01 mg/l/jour et la quantité d'oxygène dissous devient pratiquement nulle dans le fond du lac au mois de mars. La brève isothermie de printemps ne parvient pas à combler le déficit de l'hiver et les quantités d'O2 n'atteignent les teneurs de saturation que vers la mi-juillet.

Les phosphates, les nitrates et la silice sont présents à de faibles quantités dans les eaux du Port-Bielh (Tableau VI). Un appauvrissement en silice dans la zone profonde en août correspond aux sursaturations en O2 et au développement d'une diatomée planctonique.

Le lac Inférieur d'Estibère

Malgré sa faible profondeur (5 m), le lac Inférieur d'Estibère présente deux périodes de stratification thermique (fig. 18) . Les eaux de surface atteignent des températures supérieures à 16° C pendant l'été. La température des eaux du fond reste à 6° C par suite d'une alimentation par sources froides circulant sous la tourbière en bordure du lac. On peut donc le considérer comme un lac dimictique.

A cette stratification thermique se superpose une stratification chimique. L'alcalinité à 4 m est de 64 % supérieure à celle de surface. 80 % à 90 % des valeurs de la conductivité électrique sont dus aux bicarbonates.

Malgré la proximité d'une tourbière acide, le pH d'été varie entre 7,7 et 8,3 en surface alors que le pH du fond est plus alcalin de 0,5 à 0,7 unités pH. Les concentrations en oxygène dissous (fig. 18) correspondent aux valeurs du pH et on constate des sursaturations de 102 % à 127 % au-delà de 2 m de profondeur ainsi qu'une diminution de la quantité de CO2 libre.

Les teneurs moyennes en nitrates, silice et phosphates sont comparables à celles des sept autres petits lacs (Tableau VI).

Les 7 autres lacs

Ces lacs, peu profonds (5 m) et de faible superficie, sont homothermes. La température des lacs les plus bas (L. d'Anglade et Gourg Nère Inf. II) reste le plus souvent supérieure à 15° C pendant l'été, celle des lacs les plus élevés de la série (Gourguet et L. Supérieur) ne dépassent qu'exceptionnellement cette température.

Leur minéralisation présente de légères différences. Cependant, on note pour tous, au cours de l'été, une augmentation de la conductivité (Tableau II) de 50 à 100 % qui traduit une hausse de l'alcalinité (fig. 12, les bicarbonates représentant 80 % à 90 % des sels dissous.

Les valeurs moyennes du pH (Tableau IV) varient de 7,7 à 8,7 et sont maximales en août. En été les concentrations en O2 (Tableau V) sont rarement inférieures à 75 % et exceptionnellement supérieures à 110 % des teneurs à la saturation. En hiver, les phénomènes physiques consécutifs à la formation de la glace parviennent à maintenir de bonnes conditions d'oxygénation dans toute la masse d'eau (61 % près du fond au Gourg Nère Inf. II, le 7 mars 1969 sous 150 cm de glace + neige).

Les teneurs en nitrates, silice et phosphates sont faibles (Tableau VI) et leurs fluctuations au cours de l'été ne permettent pas d'y reconnaître une évolution nette.

Invertebrate aquatic assemblages in ponds from Mediterranean wetlands are composed of organisms belonging to different taxonomic groups, which present a wide range of sizes (from small rotifers to large crustaceans or insects). Although they are often sampled and analyzed separately, the ecological links among these organisms should be considered, especially in very shallow waters. In our study, invertebrate assemblages (including micro-, macrozooplankton and macroinvertebrates) were characterized in eight shallow lakes from Mediterranean wetlands in Southeastern Spain. A great spatial and temporal variability in the assemblages and in some environmental features was observed. The community was dominated in abundance and species richness by rotifers in most of the water bodies. Fish greatly contributed to the differences in community composition, as fishless ponds presented abundant and diverse cladoceran populations. Nutrient and chlorophyll-a concentration, conductivity and macrophyte cover had also a great influence on these assemblages, especially in micro- and macrozooplankton. The temporal changes observed in some of these variables affect the proportion of invertebrate biomass of the different groups along the study period. All this environmental heterogeneity produces similar responses in the invertebrate groups, in general well adapted to salinity changes or high trophic conditions. Although the heterogeneity and human disturbances can increase regional diversity, they can cause the disappearance of valuable habitats, and finally, the homogeneity in invertebrate assemblages.

55 espèces de Plécoptères ont été recensées dans la vallée supérieure du Pô (Alpes Cottiennes, Piémont, Italie) où, pendant plusieurs années, nous avons prospecté méthodiquement 7 stations lotiques situées entre 2,020 et 550 m d'altitude.Après avoir indiqué brièvement les caractéristiques de la vallée du fleuve Pô et des stations d'échantillonnage, les répartitions altitudinale, saisonnière et géographique des espèces récoltées sont analysées. Les principales plécoptérocénoses rhéophiles sont déterminées et analysées en fonction des paramètres des biotopes et des données qualitatives et semi-quantitatives.

The effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on water temperature (WT) in Lakes Jamno, Gardno, and Łebsko were studied between 1961 and 2000. Both sets of data (NAO and WT) consisted of monthly and seasonal values. Correlation and regression analyses were used and the relationships were tested for statistical significance (Fisher-Snedecor test, coefficients of correlation and determination). Positive and statistically significant (even at α=0.01) relationships were demonstrated for the winter months (December, January, February and March) and in October. The strongest relationships were demonstrated for winter (December–February) in lakes Jamno and Gardno (correlation coefficients of 0.73 and 0.74). Extreme winters, particularly the very mild ones, tended to diminish the strength of the relationships. Very mild winters were characterised by relatively favourable solar (sunshine) conditions as well as high air and water temperatures, while the NAO Index values were relatively low. Relationships for spring (March–May) and summer (June–August) were not significant. In those seasons, the effects of atmospheric circulation (NAO) on WT were thus low, while the influences of solar factors were strong. Asynchronous relationships bear some predictive value, particularly when the predictive variable is the January NAO Index (NAOJan). These relationships were significant at α=0.01, out to April (NAOJan vs. WTApr). Attention is also drawn to local factors (air temperature, geostrophic wind, solar conditions, and sea water intrusions into lakes) which affected the strength of the relationships investigated.

Branchipus blanchardi Daday 1908 is redescribed from the type locality, a small temporary pond near Cristol lake (Hautes-Alpes, France). The redescription shows that the male of this species is characterized by two bilobated outgrowths on the anterior side of clypeus, the distal segments of antenna 2 broadly enlarged in the middle and two conical outgrowths on the II to VII abdominal segments. This last characteristic does not agree with Daday's original description in which four outgrowths figured and allows us to establish the synonymy between B. blanchardi and B. alpinus Colosi 1922.

The results of 32 seasonal sampling sessions in 2000 were used to assess the dynamics of autotrophic picoplankton (APP), with special reference to the cyanobacterial component in Strzeszynskie Lake, a eutrophic lake in mid-western Poland. The abundance of picocyanobacteria (Pcy) fluctuated from 1.2x104 to 8.1x105cells mL-1 and the average abundance and biomass were 2.0x105cells mL-1 and 0.094 mg L-1, respectively. Pcy development was characterised by maxima in spring and summer. The summer maximum was twice the spring Pcy numbers. Eukaryotic APP (E-APP) were also present but in low numbers and their annual average contribution to the total APP community was only about 0.3% in abundance and about 3% in biomass. The spring Pcy community was dominated by single-celled cyanobacteria (S-Pcy) and in summer by colonial forms (C-Pcy). Throughout the sampling period, C-Pcy constituted on average 55% of the total Pcy and up to 90% in summer. C-Pcy abundance was significantly and positively correlated with water temperature (r=0.40, p=0.023, n=32). S-Pcy exhibited a distinct seasonal variation in FDC, ranging from 10% to 35%. Most FDC values above 30% were recorded from late May to mid July.

La dynamique de croissance du périphyton sur des substrats artificiels immergés à l'amont et à l'aval de secteurs de cours d'eau recevant des rejets polluants a été utilisée pour évaluer le niveau de pollution. La méthode est basée sur la détermination de paramètres globaux (matières organiques, pigments chlorophylliens, respiration, photosynthèse, assimilation hétérotrophe) qui permettent de caractériser le développement des communautés photoautotrophes et hétérotrophes sur les substrats. Le taux de croissance et l'activité hétérotrophe de ces communautés évoluent au cours de la durée d'immersion des substrats selon un modèle général qui est décrit à partir de séries de données recueillies sur trois cours d'eau. Les résultats obtenus sur 22 stations montrent que ces paramètres constituent des indicateurs de pollution plus sensibles que ceux basés sur la composition spécifique des communautés de périphyton.

The wetlands found in the Brazilian Cerrado are poorly studied environments regarding ecological aspects. Assessing the diversity of aquatic invertebrates in wetlands is a challenging task, since there are no standard sampling methods that minimize the spatial effects caused by macrophytes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a new sampling method for assessing Cladocera richness in macrophyte-rich wetlands of Brazilian Cerrado. In six wetlands, one transect was established which corresponded to a gradient of depth or change in aquatic vegetation. Samples containing cladocerans were collected using plankton net dragged among aquatic vegetation in the dry and rainy seasons. The species accumulation curves using non-parametric estimators and the overestimation of richness were used to determine the sampling efficiency. The species accumulation curves showed different asymptotic trends regarding the season and wetland studied. Especially in the rainy season, an asymptotic trend was not observed in two of the wetlands studied, which may reflect the influence of seasonality on Cladocera assemblage. Nevertheless, the overestimation of species richness showed that the method of sampling was able to find more than 60% of the estimated species richness, regardless of season or wetland studied. These results indicate that the method employed for sampling Cladocera in the Cerrado wetlands can be considered adequate.

Rhyacophila tristis Pictet a été étudiée durant 3 années consécutives dans un ruisseau pyrénéen (altitude 1 930 m — température maximum 17° C en août — couvert de neige 4-6 mois par an).Les larves sont essentiellement carnivores et se nourrissent surtout de chironomidae. Le développement larvaire dure 2 ans. La croissance s'effectue surtout en période déneigée. Entre le 1er et le 2e hiver de vie larvaire, l'accroissement (en poids sec) fut en moyenne de 2,25 % j-1. Durant cette période, 1,6 % des larves disparaissaient en moyenne chaque jour. Les taux instantanés de croissance et de mortalité demeurent voisins d'une génération à la suivante. La production a été estimée à 240 mg m-2 an -1. Le rapport Production/Biomasse moyenne annuelle = 3,1.

Des clés de détermination (larve, nymphe et imagos) sont données pour les 37 espèces pyrénéennes de Simulies, récoltées par l'auteur entre 400 et 3000 mètres d'altitude.

L'interdépendance de la lumière et de la température est étudiée en milieu fini et en conditions nutritives non limitantessur des cultures monospécifiques non axéniques de quatre espèces : Fragilaria crotonensis, Anabaena macrospora,Staurastrum pingue et Coelastrum cambricum. Les taux de croissance maximum sont respectivement de 0.57, 0.63, 0.77et 1.4.j-1, associés à des températures de 25, 25, 27 et 35° C et des lumières optimales de 150, 170, 270 et 290 µE.m-2.s-1.Ces résultats obtenus, dans une plage de température 10-35° C et pour des lumières comprises entre 5 et 800 µE.m-2.s-1, sous une photopériode de 15/9, sont ajustés par des modèles.

This paper describes spatio-temporal variability of the basic ice condition parameters, relationships between selected lakes in terms of those parameters, and frequency of fast (ice cover) and floating ice. Attention is also paid to morphology and topography of ice cover in lakes Jamno, Bukowo, Gardno, and Łebsko during 1960/61-1999/2000. Based on data archived at the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, the following ice parameters were analysed: date of the first ice appearance; date of the first ice cover formation, date of disintegration of the last ice cover, date of disappearance of the last ice, ice season duration, number of days with ice, number of days with ice cover, ice conditions continuity, and maximum ice thickness in winter. Lakes Jamno and Bukowo, located in the western part of the Polish coast, are characterised by milder ice conditions, compared to the more eastward lakes (the Gardno and the Łebsko). Ice parameters were found to correlate closely, with statistical significance exceeding α = 0.01 and correlation coefficients usually higher than 0.90, between individual lakes, particularly the neighbouring ones. The highest frequencies of fast and floating ice, 70-75 % and about 10 %, respectively (altogether more than 80 %), were recorded in the last pentade of January. Fast ice (ice cover), accounting for 80 % of all the ice types, was found to dominate in the lakes studied; fast ice domination is typical of small and shallow water bodies. Ice cover is formed as a result of uniform increase in ice rind thickness. After the fast ice has decayed, an ice field pushed by the wind may form ice piles rising to a few metres above the water surface. At the beginning of the ice season, the piled ice appears most often on the western and northern shores, while at the end of the season it tends to stay on the eastern shores. The processes, associated with the presence of piled ice on the shore, are destructive not only for the shore, but also for constructions deployed within the ice range. The ice piles also affect transport and accumulation of sediment, mainly in the shore zone.

Microvelia picinguaba sp. nov., Microvelia ubatuba sp. nov., Paravelia gabrielae sp. nov. and Rhagovelia pseudotijuca sp. nov. are described. The male of Microvelia ioana is described. Microvelia mimula and Microvelia aemulana are synonymized. Microvelia hinei, M. ioana, Microvelia longipes, Microvelia pulchella, Microvelia venustatis, Oiovelia brasiliensis, Oiovelia cunucunumana, Paravelia basalis, Paravelia itatiayana, Rhagovelia denticulata, Rhagovelia hambletoni, Rhagovelia janeira, Rhagovelia robusta, Rhagovelia tenuipes, Rhagovelia zela and Stridulivelia ayacucho are recorded for the first time from São Paulo State. New locality records are given for Husseyella diffidens, Rhagovelia accedens, Rhagovelia aiuruoca, Rhagovelia henryi, Rhagovelia lucida, Rhagovelia modesta, Rhagovelia occulcata, Rhagovelia trepida and Rhagovelia triangula.

The west palearctic species of Marthamea are reviewed. Adults are distinct from other European genera, but larvaeand eggs are very similar to those of genus Phasganophora. M. beraudi (Navás) (Antilebanon Mts.) is re-instated as a species distinct from M. vitripennis (Burmeister). A lectotype of the latter is designated. Its range includes south-west, centraland south-east Europe. Records from Syria are unconfirmed, those from Israel are erroneous. The species has in thepast been confused with larvae of a Phasganophora species. M. selysii (Pictet) has brachypterous males and is known fromSpain north to Meuse and Moselle rivers. Keys to adults and larvae are presented, but larval M. selysii and M. vitripenniscan presently not be separated. The European Marthamea species are inhabitants of the potamon and are endangered ;they are presently already extinct in parts of their former ranges.

Phytoplankton dynamics in freshwater ecosystems can be faced as a meaningful natural stressor for its main grazers, and henceconstrain bottom-up interactions within the trophic structure of the food-web. Filter-feeding zooplankters, such as Daphnia, copewith resources fluctuations by adjusting their life-history as a function of balances in the energy allocation rules. Additionally,Daphnia populations often withstand interspecific competition within coexisting related species, and it is generally assumedthat body size is a strategic trait conditioning exploitative ability and the related competitive advantage of species. The lifehistoryresponses of one Daphnia magna population and three populations of Daphnia cf longispina to a discrete gradient of algaeconcentration were assessed. This experiment was focused on (i) how these distinct populations regulate life-history when feedingover low, intermediate and high food-levels; and on (ii) whether the large-bodied D. magna can be better in exploiting resourcesover the gradient than can the smaller D. cf longispina populations. We found evidences that body size might not be the singletrait influencing the exploitative ability of related species. The D. cf longispina populations were often better than D. magna inexploiting different levels of resources, and remarkable differences in fitness were found between these similar-sized individualswithin food-level; indeed, these differences were frequently of higher scale than those found between the larger D. magna and anyof the D. cf longispina populations.

We test the possibility of a hybrid origin for Chaetopteryx morettii using cross-breeding experiments and molecular analysis. We show that species within the Chaetopteryx villosa group can hybridize, but that C. moretti is not of hybrid origin. We discuss the applicability of our approach for testing ideas on hybrid speciation and detecting hybrids in natural populations, e.g., for conservation purposes.

Les changements du zooplancton lacustre à la suite des feux et des coupes à blanc dans la forêt boréale ont été évalués en 1996 en comparant trois groupes de lacs du Québec méridional : 20 lacs de référence aux bassins versants non perturbés, 9 lacs ayant subi en 1995 des feux de forêt sur la majorité de leur bassin versant et 9 lacs ayant eu en 1995 une coupe à blanc sur une partie de leur bassin versant. Les communautés zooplanctoniques ont été caractérisées par différentes variables : 1) la composition, la richesse spécifique et la densité du zooplancton, 2) la masse organique du limnoplancton (seston > 53 µm) et 3) le biovolume du méso- et macrozooplancton (> 250 µm). La richesse spécifique et les assemblages d'espèces en juillet 1996 ne différaient pas entre les groupes de lacs ; la variation inter-réplicats dans les assemblages d'espèces de chaque lac était très faible en comparaison de la variation inter-lacs. Par contre, la densité du zooplancton et la masse organique du limnoplancton étaient en moyenne significativement plus élevées dans les lacs de feux que dans les lacs de coupes et les lacs de référence. Le biovolume du méso et macrozooplancton suivait les mêmes tendances. L'effet des traitements (groupes de lacs : référence, feu, coupe) expliquait moins de 15 % de la variance totale de la masse organique du limnoplancton et du biovolume du méso et macrozooplancton tandis que les différences inter-lacs expliquaient la majorité (> 70 %) de la variance totale dans ces indicateurs. Les 15 % de variance résiduelle étaient attribuables à la variation inter-réplicats dans chaque lac. Notre étude préliminaire indique que les feux de forêts provoquent une poussée trophique du zooplancton et du limnoplancton mais n'ont pas d'effet sur la biodiversité et les assemblages d'espèces de zooplancton. Par contre, les coupes de forêt n'accroissent pas la biomasse du zooplancton en dépit d'une légère augmentation des nutriments, car les apports plus importants en carbone organique dissous après la coupe limitent la production biologique. Les changements limnologiques d'un lac à l'autre ont beaucoup plus d'importance que les feux et les coupes de forêts dans le contrôle environnemental du zooplancton des lacs de la forêt boréale.

Apobaetis insolitus n. sp., Apobaetis kallawaya n. sp. and Apobaetis niger n. sp. (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) are described fromnymphs collected in Argentina and Bolivia. Apobaetis insolitus can be distinguished by the labrum with anterior margin with aU-shaped emargination, segment II of labial palpi with triangular apically rounded distomedial projection. Apobaetis kallawayacan be distinguished by segment II of labial palpi with triangular, slender and apically pointed distomedial projection, the posteriormargins of the abdominal terga with blunt spines and paraprocts with blunt spines apically. Apobaetis niger can be distinguishedby the anterior margin of labrum with medial lobe and segment II of labial palpi with triangular apically rounded distomedialprojection. The three new species possess tarsal claws with two rows of denticles. A key to all species known fromnymphs is presented.

Alpine areas are extreme habitats that require special adaptations and involve major trade-offs in terms of life history. Amphibians have the ability to adapt both their life history and developmental traits to alpine environments. Temperate amphibians depend on the quality and availability of aquatic habitats for reproduction. We explored the aquatic habitat used by amphibians in the alpine area of Retezat Mountains, Southern Carpathians, Romania. We surveyed 40 aquatic habitats in a 380 ha area delimited by mountain crests and drained by a steep valley. Each aquatic habitat was characterized using 10 environmental variables. Only three amphibian species occur at elevations above 1900 m, the most widespread being the Common Frog Rana temporaria. The Common Frog showed preference for breeding aquatic habitats, the variables of importance being altitude, solar radiation, water chemistry and grazing. Higher elevation and lower solar radiation decreased frog occurrence, while the impact of grazing favored the use of water bodies. Acidification is eminent in the area with pH dropping below 5 in 20% of the water bodies. Overall, amphibian occurrence in alpine area can be partly explained by the characteristics of aquatic habitats.
