Secchi depths recorded in Lake Zürich are determined mainly by concentrations of autochtonous material such asplankton and other material related to biomass production. The surface contrast transmittance factor has a negligibleeffect on a Secchi depth of up to 7 m and is of minor importance up to 13 m. Alterations in transparency values after1970 as a result of the reduced nutrient input were most pronounced in the autumn-winter period (October 28 to February19) as well as in the clear water phase (April 29 to July 29). After 1970, almost all buildings in the Lake Zürich drainagearea were connected to a sewage treatment plant with a three stage purification. In the autumn-winter period, the Secchidepth is related to the development of Oscillatoria rubescens filaments and is not correlated with changes in trophicstate. The restoration measures led to a statistically significant increase in the Secchi depth during the clear water phase,and additionally to a prolongation of the period with the highest tranparency values (May 20 to July 4). The Secchitechnique is simple but seems to be valuable for recognizing long-term changes in the optical properties of a water body.

Les termes du bilan hydrique des étangs du système Vaccarès sont analysés. Les pluies et l'apport d'eau de drainage agricole constituent l'essentiel de l'actif du bilan auquel s'ajoutent éventuellement les entrées d'eau de mer, volontaires ou accidentelles, les entrées d'eau douce volontaires et les apports des eaux souterraines. L'évaporation et l'évacuation en mer du trop-plein des étangs constituent l'essentiel des sorties d'eau. Malgré la rareté de l'information, la quantification des termes du bilan est tentée en première approche. Pour une période donnée, la prépondérance des entrées d'eau sur les sorties, ou inversement, se traduit par un stockage ou un destockage et par des variations du niveau et de la salinité des étangs.

Experimental introductions of Galba truncatula in new habitats were carried out over the 30 last years in the department ofHaute-Vienne (central France) to study the details of snail settlement and the outcome of these populations, and to determine ifthe susceptibility of these new colonies to experimental infection with Fasciola hepática did not change over time. A total of 51samples (100 adult snails each) were collected from three populations known for their high susceptibility to F hepatica infections (> 60 %). Each sample was introduced in March in an open drainage furrow (36 meadows) or a road ditch (15 sites) whichhad never been inhabited by snails. Introduced snails from 22 samples survived in 9 furrows and 13 road ditches. In these sites,the number of overwintering G. truncatula increased up to the-second or third year post-introduction and progressively decreasedin the following years to become stable from the sixth or seventh year (less than 40 snails per site). In 13 populations (outof 22), experimental infections of snails with F. hepatica did not result in significant variations in survival rates or in prevalencesof infections when compared to the respective rates recorded in the three original populations. Conversely, in the nine otherpopulations, experimental infections of snails resulted in a decrease in prevalence (< 40 %), whereas the survival rates of snailsat day 30 post-exposure did not change. This last result might be explained by a change in natural parasite pressure in the newhabitats, being probably lower than that existing in the three sites inhabited by the populations of origin.

Daphnia longispina (O. F. Müller 1785) and Daphnia cucullata (G. O. Sars 1862), despite coexisting in similar densities in the lake, showed different demographic cycles. To search the causes of such variances between the two Daphnia, selected population parameters (density, body proportions, reproductive output) were correlated with the density of five dominant and potentially competitive species of Cladocera. The same parameters were estimated in relation to predation pressure of vertebrates (planktivorous fish) and invertebrates (Leptodora kindtii (Focke 1844)). The obtained results show that competition had no apparent impact on life-histories of Daphnia. Different strategies of the two Daphnia resulted from the uneven effect of invertebrate and vertebrate predators. D. longispina that was affected by planktivorous fish and Leptodora kindtii invested in reproduction and carried big egg-clutches. D. cucullata, which was insignificantly influenced by fish, displayed low reproductive output but changed their body proportions in the process of cyclomorphosis when occurring with L. kindtii. Other life-history trade-offs altered during the year, in accordance with the intensity of predation pressure.

L'auteur a pu observer, au laboratoire, le cycle biologique de Plectrocnemia conspersa dans sa totalité. Cette espèce présente 5 stades larvaires. Les quatre phases principales de ce cycle sont analysées. L'influence de la température et de la nourriture sur ces 4 phases est discutée. Des températures élevées et une nourriture abondante entraînent un raccourcissement très important du cycle biologique.

Even though the insects of the Neotropical area had been neglected, several authors have studied different aspects ofthe Southern Neotropical Plecoptera (Aubert, Benedetto, Enderlein, Froehlich, Gerstaecker, Illies, Navás, Klapálek, Werner, Zwick), specially the Andean oligostenothermal cool-adapted stoneflies.Most of the Argentinian river basins are widely spread out. The upper reaches of the Negro hydrographic system areon the east slope of the Andes and discharge into the Limay and Neuquén rivers downstream. The Negro river is formedby the convergence of both rivers and presents a sequence of reservoirs (main-stream impoundments on Limay and off-channel ones at Neuquén) ; it reaches the South Atlantic coast at approximately 41 ° S.The headstreams of the Valdivia system are on the west slope of the Andes. This river, much shorter than the Negro,joins the Pacific at 40° S. Transition from rhithron to potamon is rapid, if indeed the potamon exists.Macrozoobenthic samples of these two North Patagonian river basins, Negro (Argentina) and Valdivia (Chile) were taken in the period 1977-1983 in order to compare habitats of aquatic insects and other invertebrates on both slopes of the Andes and at the same latitude.Ten genera of Plecoptera were recorded by the author as nymphs : Gripopterygidae (Antarctoperla, Limnoperla, Potamoperla, Pelurgoperla, and Araucanioperla ?), Diamphipnoidae (Diamphipnoa and Diamphipnopsis), Austroperlidae (Klapopteryx), Notonemouridae (Austronemoura) and Perlidae (Kempnyella).Most of these genera of Plecoptera were collected in the upper rhithral. Only Antarctoperla and Limnoperla were foundin reservoirs, in one lake and in medium-size to wide rivers. Gripoperygids were more frequent on the Argentine side ;the other families were more abondant on the opposite slope ; this situation can probably be explained by the differentecological conditions brought about by cattle raising and dam construction.

Ce travail comprend la description de 2 nouvelles espèces d'Enchytraeus : E. varithecatus n. sp. et E. variatus n. sp. et la redescription d'E. bigeminus Niel. & Chr. Ces 3 espèces ont été obtenues à partir de cultures. Les auteurs font ensuite des remarques sur la biologie, la morphologie et surtout la taxinomie des espèces européennes du genre Enchytraeus.

The results of 32 seasonal sampling sessions in 2000 were used to assess the dynamics of autotrophic picoplankton (APP), with special reference to the cyanobacterial component in Strzeszynskie Lake, a eutrophic lake in mid-western Poland. The abundance of picocyanobacteria (Pcy) fluctuated from 1.2x104 to 8.1x105cells mL-1 and the average abundance and biomass were 2.0x105cells mL-1 and 0.094 mg L-1, respectively. Pcy development was characterised by maxima in spring and summer. The summer maximum was twice the spring Pcy numbers. Eukaryotic APP (E-APP) were also present but in low numbers and their annual average contribution to the total APP community was only about 0.3% in abundance and about 3% in biomass. The spring Pcy community was dominated by single-celled cyanobacteria (S-Pcy) and in summer by colonial forms (C-Pcy). Throughout the sampling period, C-Pcy constituted on average 55% of the total Pcy and up to 90% in summer. C-Pcy abundance was significantly and positively correlated with water temperature (r=0.40, p=0.023, n=32). S-Pcy exhibited a distinct seasonal variation in FDC, ranging from 10% to 35%. Most FDC values above 30% were recorded from late May to mid July.

Plastic effect of environmental factors acting on an aquatic submerged plant, Potamogeton perfoliatus L. at the plant-level (nutrient availability) and the leaf-level (light intensity) at different sites in Lake Balaton was studied. Light-dependent morphological traits (foliar morphology and internode length) of P. perfoliatus were measured and analysed across the environmental gradients of the lake. The size of leaves was influenced by both trophic state and light environment: nutrient surplus increased the size of leaves by ∼29%, whereas a more heterogeneous light environment resulted in 15% larger leaves. The light environment influenced shoot morphology (internode length) to a greater extent than nutrient surplus (38% vs. 19%). Contrary to this, within-plant morphological variability was significantly higher (41%) at the nutrient limiting sites as a result of diversification effect of the leaf-level environmental factor, light. Foliar parameters and within-plant variability showed correlation only with the total N content of the sediment. Appearance of P. perfoliatus is shaped by counteracting effects: within-plant differentiation, promoted by leaf-level environmental sensitivity and within-plant homogenization triggered by perception of the surroundings at plant-level. Both light attenuation, stimulating an increase of morphological variability, and nutrient surplus, initiating the stabilization of morphological parameters, could have adaptive advantages. The variability of leaf size leads to diversification of foliar parameters, thus increasing the efficiency of light harvest at low-nutrient sites and making responses to changes in the light environment more dynamic. These results suggest that leaf-level-induced diversification is counteracted by the standardization effect triggered by plant-level environmental factors.

A partir de prélèvements effectués dans la région de Galice, les auteurs dressent un premier inventaire de la faune, encore inconnue, des Oligochètes aquatiques de la Péninsule Ibérique. 54 espèces appartenant à 7 familles sont ainsi recensées. La présence dans cette région de Rhyacodrilus subterraneus, et celle probable de Spiridion insigne et Pristina sima est intéressante à souligner. L'appareil génital de Peloscolex velutinus est décrit ici pour la première fois.

Branchipus blanchardi Daday 1908 is redescribed from the type locality, a small temporary pond near Cristol lake (Hautes-Alpes, France). The redescription shows that the male of this species is characterized by two bilobated outgrowths on the anterior side of clypeus, the distal segments of antenna 2 broadly enlarged in the middle and two conical outgrowths on the II to VII abdominal segments. This last characteristic does not agree with Daday's original description in which four outgrowths figured and allows us to establish the synonymy between B. blanchardi and B. alpinus Colosi 1922.

Des dosages de mercure (Hg) ont été effectués dans des espèces de mousses aquatiques (bryophytes), Fontinalis antipyretica Hedw., Cinclidotus danubicus Schiffn. & Baumg., Cinclidotus nigricans (Brid.) Wijk & Marg. et Amblystegium riparium Hedw., prélevées dans le réseau hydrographique de la plaine rhénane d'Alsace (Rhin canalisé, son principal affluent l'Ill qui possède un champ d'inondation fonctionnel et dans le réseau des rivières phréatiques, Fig. 1). Le choix des points de prélèvement a été basé sur les résultats obtenus lors des études antérieures utilisant les méthodes des traceurs hydrologiques (Cl-), et des analyses physico-chimiques de l'eau (NO3-, PO4 3-, NH4+) et la méthode de bioindication de la qualité de l'eau basée sur les groupements végétaux. Des variations caractéristiques des teneurs mercurielles des mousses aquatiques ont été observées (Fig. 2). Des teneurs (moyennes annuelles) plus élevées (allant jusqu'à 0,29 µg Hg.g-1, ms) relevées dans les cours d'eau phréatiques concernent surtout ceux situés à proximité du Rhin et visualisent des secteurs d'infiltration d'eau contaminée du fleuve canalisé vers sa nappe riveraine. Des zones de la nappe à faibles teneurs en mercure des mousses (0,05 µg Hg.g-1, ms) représentent des secteurs de la nappe exempts de contamination mercurielle. Les zones les plus vulnérables de la nappe phréatique rhénane sont les secteurs amont des usines hydroélectriques et les coudres du fleuve (Fig. 5), d'une part pour la pollution mercurielle « historique » du Rhin canalisé, et d'autre part pour des contaminations chroniques, surtout par des polluants persistants. Au contraire du Rhin canalisé, la rivière Ill également fortement contaminée par le Hg, dans la partie aval de son cours, ne fuit pas dans son lit mineur. Lors des inondations, cette rivière assure l'épuration des eaux de crue grâce au système de rétention « sol-végétation » et recharge ainsi la nappe phréatique en eau d'excellente qualité : la végétation absorbe des nutriments et les colloïdes du sol (argiles, limons) adsorbent des cations et donc du mercure. Les résultats de cette étude confirment l'impact de la canalisation du Rhin sur les échanges rivière - aquifère et l'importance de la préservation d'un champ d'inondation fonctionnel pour la qualité de l'eau des nappes alluviales.

Neuf lacs naturels du Massif de Néouvielle (Hautes-Pyrénées), étages entre 2 100 m et 2 325 m d'altitude, sont décrits et les résultats de mesures physiques et chimiques, effectuées durant quatre années consécutives, sont donnés dans ce travail.

Dans le vallon d'Estibère, quatre lacs (1,1 à 2,4 hectares - 3,2 à 5 m de profondeur) s'échelonnent de 70 en 70 m d'altitude. Ils constituent un remarquable exemple de l'évolution des ceintures végétales et du comblement des cuvettes par formation de tourbières. Quatre petits lacs du Vallon de Port-Bielh ont également été étudiés. Beaucoup plus important, le lac de Port-Bielh (16,5 hectares - 19 m de profondeur) a fait l'objet d'une étude plus suivie.

Selon leur altitude ,ces lacs sont gelés 6 à 7 mois par an. Par leurs caractéristiques morphométriques et physico-chimiques, le lac de Port-Bielh et le lac Inférieur d'Estibère se différencient des 7 autres lacs.

Le lac de Port-Bielh

Son régime thermique (fig. 8) permet de le classer dans les lacs de type dimictique subpolaire. La stabilité thermique maximum se situe à la mi-juillet (106 à 128 g-cm.cm2) ; elle décroit ensuite progressivement et devient nulle début septembre. L'apport estival de chaleur (7 186 à 8 842 cal.cm-2) représente 43 % seulement du budget calorifique annuel évalué à 17 500 cal. cm-2 pour 1968/69.

La transparence est élevée et la profondeur de visibilité du disque de Secchi est de 13,5 m en moyenne.

En été, l'eau faiblement minéralisée, a une conductivité électrique à 18° C de l'ordre de 23 mhos. La conductivité augmente nettement en profondeur pendant l'hiver où elle peut atteindre 57 mhos (fig. 11). Les bicarbonates représentent 73 % à 93 % des sels totaux. La concentration en ions Ca++(3,5 à 4,4 mg/l) et Mg++ (0,25 à 0,75 mg/l) augmente légèrement au niveau de la vase en hiver. Le fer est à l'état de traces pendant l'été ; il atteint des teneurs de 1,5 mg/l au fond du lac en hiver.

Le pH (fig. 13), toujours basique, présente d'importantes variations (7,25 à 9,52). Il augmente progressivement au cours de l'été surtout au delà de 10 m de profondeur où les valeurs sont généralement supérieures à pH 9 en août. Cette alcalinisation est la conséquence d'une diminution de la quantité de CO2 libre qui devient pratiquement nulle en été. La quasi totalité du CO2 total se présente alors sous forme de bicarbonates (fig. 14).

Une forte concentration en oxygène dissous (fig. 15 ; 120 à 135 % des teneurs à la saturation) correspond aux valeurs élevées du pH en août. La circulation automnale ramène ces teneurs à une valeur proche de la saturation. Sous la glace, la consommation d'O2 peut être évaluée à 0,01 mg/l/jour et la quantité d'oxygène dissous devient pratiquement nulle dans le fond du lac au mois de mars. La brève isothermie de printemps ne parvient pas à combler le déficit de l'hiver et les quantités d'O2 n'atteignent les teneurs de saturation que vers la mi-juillet.

Les phosphates, les nitrates et la silice sont présents à de faibles quantités dans les eaux du Port-Bielh (Tableau VI). Un appauvrissement en silice dans la zone profonde en août correspond aux sursaturations en O2 et au développement d'une diatomée planctonique.

Le lac Inférieur d'Estibère

Malgré sa faible profondeur (5 m), le lac Inférieur d'Estibère présente deux périodes de stratification thermique (fig. 18) . Les eaux de surface atteignent des températures supérieures à 16° C pendant l'été. La température des eaux du fond reste à 6° C par suite d'une alimentation par sources froides circulant sous la tourbière en bordure du lac. On peut donc le considérer comme un lac dimictique.

A cette stratification thermique se superpose une stratification chimique. L'alcalinité à 4 m est de 64 % supérieure à celle de surface. 80 % à 90 % des valeurs de la conductivité électrique sont dus aux bicarbonates.

Malgré la proximité d'une tourbière acide, le pH d'été varie entre 7,7 et 8,3 en surface alors que le pH du fond est plus alcalin de 0,5 à 0,7 unités pH. Les concentrations en oxygène dissous (fig. 18) correspondent aux valeurs du pH et on constate des sursaturations de 102 % à 127 % au-delà de 2 m de profondeur ainsi qu'une diminution de la quantité de CO2 libre.

Les teneurs moyennes en nitrates, silice et phosphates sont comparables à celles des sept autres petits lacs (Tableau VI).

Les 7 autres lacs

Ces lacs, peu profonds (5 m) et de faible superficie, sont homothermes. La température des lacs les plus bas (L. d'Anglade et Gourg Nère Inf. II) reste le plus souvent supérieure à 15° C pendant l'été, celle des lacs les plus élevés de la série (Gourguet et L. Supérieur) ne dépassent qu'exceptionnellement cette température.

Leur minéralisation présente de légères différences. Cependant, on note pour tous, au cours de l'été, une augmentation de la conductivité (Tableau II) de 50 à 100 % qui traduit une hausse de l'alcalinité (fig. 12, les bicarbonates représentant 80 % à 90 % des sels dissous.

Les valeurs moyennes du pH (Tableau IV) varient de 7,7 à 8,7 et sont maximales en août. En été les concentrations en O2 (Tableau V) sont rarement inférieures à 75 % et exceptionnellement supérieures à 110 % des teneurs à la saturation. En hiver, les phénomènes physiques consécutifs à la formation de la glace parviennent à maintenir de bonnes conditions d'oxygénation dans toute la masse d'eau (61 % près du fond au Gourg Nère Inf. II, le 7 mars 1969 sous 150 cm de glace + neige).

Les teneurs en nitrates, silice et phosphates sont faibles (Tableau VI) et leurs fluctuations au cours de l'été ne permettent pas d'y reconnaître une évolution nette.

The effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) on water temperature (WT) in Lakes Jamno, Gardno, and Łebsko were studied between 1961 and 2000. Both sets of data (NAO and WT) consisted of monthly and seasonal values. Correlation and regression analyses were used and the relationships were tested for statistical significance (Fisher-Snedecor test, coefficients of correlation and determination). Positive and statistically significant (even at α=0.01) relationships were demonstrated for the winter months (December, January, February and March) and in October. The strongest relationships were demonstrated for winter (December–February) in lakes Jamno and Gardno (correlation coefficients of 0.73 and 0.74). Extreme winters, particularly the very mild ones, tended to diminish the strength of the relationships. Very mild winters were characterised by relatively favourable solar (sunshine) conditions as well as high air and water temperatures, while the NAO Index values were relatively low. Relationships for spring (March–May) and summer (June–August) were not significant. In those seasons, the effects of atmospheric circulation (NAO) on WT were thus low, while the influences of solar factors were strong. Asynchronous relationships bear some predictive value, particularly when the predictive variable is the January NAO Index (NAOJan). These relationships were significant at α=0.01, out to April (NAOJan vs. WTApr). Attention is also drawn to local factors (air temperature, geostrophic wind, solar conditions, and sea water intrusions into lakes) which affected the strength of the relationships investigated.

Les résultats d'une étude du peuplement des macroinvertébrés benthiques dans le réseau hydrographique de la rivièreSimeto sont exposés. La recherche a été menée sur 8 stations du cours principal et sur une station de chacun des affluents :T. Saracena, T. Cutò, R. Troina, R. Salso. Les échantillonnages ont été effectués mensuellement d'octobre 1988 à novembre1989. L'analyse a mis en évidence la présence d'une richesse faunistique considérable (267 taxa) représentée surtout parles Hydracariens, Ephéméroptères, Odonates, Plécoptères, Coléoptères, Trichoptères et Diptères. Cette richesse est maximaledans la partie haute du bassin, tandis que dans la partie inférieure le nombre de taxons de chaque groupe diminueconsidérablement. Cet appauvrissement est attribué aux impacts directs ou indirects des différentes activités humaines.

55 espèces de Plécoptères ont été recensées dans la vallée supérieure du Pô (Alpes Cottiennes, Piémont, Italie) où, pendant plusieurs années, nous avons prospecté méthodiquement 7 stations lotiques situées entre 2,020 et 550 m d'altitude.Après avoir indiqué brièvement les caractéristiques de la vallée du fleuve Pô et des stations d'échantillonnage, les répartitions altitudinale, saisonnière et géographique des espèces récoltées sont analysées. Les principales plécoptérocénoses rhéophiles sont déterminées et analysées en fonction des paramètres des biotopes et des données qualitatives et semi-quantitatives.

La dynamique de croissance du périphyton sur des substrats artificiels immergés à l'amont et à l'aval de secteurs de cours d'eau recevant des rejets polluants a été utilisée pour évaluer le niveau de pollution. La méthode est basée sur la détermination de paramètres globaux (matières organiques, pigments chlorophylliens, respiration, photosynthèse, assimilation hétérotrophe) qui permettent de caractériser le développement des communautés photoautotrophes et hétérotrophes sur les substrats. Le taux de croissance et l'activité hétérotrophe de ces communautés évoluent au cours de la durée d'immersion des substrats selon un modèle général qui est décrit à partir de séries de données recueillies sur trois cours d'eau. Les résultats obtenus sur 22 stations montrent que ces paramètres constituent des indicateurs de pollution plus sensibles que ceux basés sur la composition spécifique des communautés de périphyton.

Aquatic beetles were sampled on a monthly basis between July 1991 and June 1992 in the wetland pond of La Nava de Fuentes (Palencia), a rehabilitated wetland intended to restore just part of the ancient Laguna de La Nava, one of the biggest wet areas in continental Spain until its virtual disappearance in the 1950s. The ecology and the phenology of 50 species are described, and discussed to determine the degree of maturity reached by this newly created wetland.

A new genus of hypogean Ostracoda, Marococandona nov. gen. from wells and springs in the Guelmin and Agadir regions(Southern Morocco) is described. This genus is close to the genus Candonopsis, but can be distinguished from this latter by severalcharacteristics : the rectangular shape of the carapace, the reduction of the antenna chaetotaxy, the lack of sexual dimorphismin the male antenna, the lack of setae on the protopodite of the second thoracopod, and on the two first articles of the third thoracopodendopodite. M. danielopoli n. sp. has primitive characters, with a normally segmented antennula, a ‘t’ seta on the antenna,and normally developed furcal claws. In contrast, the morphology of M. nicolae n. sp. is regressed, with a 5 segmentedantennula, no ‘t’ setae on the antenna, and a reduced furca. The two species live in highly mineralised water and seem poorlysensitive to groundwater pollution.

This paper describes spatio-temporal variability of the basic ice condition parameters, relationships between selected lakes in terms of those parameters, and frequency of fast (ice cover) and floating ice. Attention is also paid to morphology and topography of ice cover in lakes Jamno, Bukowo, Gardno, and Łebsko during 1960/61-1999/2000. Based on data archived at the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, the following ice parameters were analysed: date of the first ice appearance; date of the first ice cover formation, date of disintegration of the last ice cover, date of disappearance of the last ice, ice season duration, number of days with ice, number of days with ice cover, ice conditions continuity, and maximum ice thickness in winter. Lakes Jamno and Bukowo, located in the western part of the Polish coast, are characterised by milder ice conditions, compared to the more eastward lakes (the Gardno and the Łebsko). Ice parameters were found to correlate closely, with statistical significance exceeding α = 0.01 and correlation coefficients usually higher than 0.90, between individual lakes, particularly the neighbouring ones. The highest frequencies of fast and floating ice, 70-75 % and about 10 %, respectively (altogether more than 80 %), were recorded in the last pentade of January. Fast ice (ice cover), accounting for 80 % of all the ice types, was found to dominate in the lakes studied; fast ice domination is typical of small and shallow water bodies. Ice cover is formed as a result of uniform increase in ice rind thickness. After the fast ice has decayed, an ice field pushed by the wind may form ice piles rising to a few metres above the water surface. At the beginning of the ice season, the piled ice appears most often on the western and northern shores, while at the end of the season it tends to stay on the eastern shores. The processes, associated with the presence of piled ice on the shore, are destructive not only for the shore, but also for constructions deployed within the ice range. The ice piles also affect transport and accumulation of sediment, mainly in the shore zone.
