Airports have been frequently affected by different internal and external disruptive events, which generally deteriorated their planned/regular performances. Their resilience is defined as the ability to withstand and maintain a certain level of functionality of performances compared to their reference regular/planned level during the impact of disruptive events and to recover reasonably rapidly afterwards. Robustness is defined as the level of saved functionality of performances compared to their planned/regular level, enabling continuous operations during the impact of disruptive events. The level of deteriorated functionality compared to that of the planned/regular functionality of performances represents their vulnerability. This paper develops a methodology for assessing resilience, robustness and vulnerability of airports affected by a given disruptive event(s). The methodology consists of analytical models of indicators of operational, economic, social and environmental performances of airports and other main actors/stakeholders involved. These indicators are used as figures-of-merit in analytical models for assessing their cumulative and time-dependent resilience, robustness, and vulnerability. The methodology is applied to assess resilience, robustness and vulnerability of two large airports – LHR (London Heathrow, UK) and NYC JFK (John F. Kennedy, US) – affected by a global and lasting external disruptive event – the COVID-19 pandemic disease. Based on the indicators of operational and economic performances, the results indicate very low resilience and robustness and very high vulnerability of both airports and their other main actors/stakeholders involved. Their resilience and robustness based on the indicators of social and environmental performances were not substantively different from the corresponding vulnerability. In absolute terms, LHR airport has been affected stronger than its NYC JFK counterpart. Savings in costs/externalities during the observed period under the given conditions have modestly compensated for total losses of both airports and their main actors/stakeholders involved.

Pneumatic launch systems for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), including mechanical and pneumatic systems, are complex and non-linear. They are subjected to system parameters during launch, which leads to difficulty in engineering research analysis. For example, the mismatch between the UAV parameters and the parameter design indices of the launch system as well as the unclear design indices of the launching speed and overload of UAVs have a great impact on launch safety. Considering this situation, some studies are presented in this paper. Taking the pneumatic launch system as a research object, a pneumatic launcher dynamic simulation model is built based on co-simulation considering the coupling characteristics of the mechanical structure and transmission system. Its accuracy was verified by laboratory test results. Based on this model, the paper shows the effects of the key parameters, including the mass of the UAV, cylinder volume, pressure and moment of inertia of the pulley block, on the performance of the dynamic characteristics of the launch process. Then, a method for matching the parameter characteristics between the UAV and launch system based on batch simulation is proposed. The set of matching parameter values of the UAV and launch system that satisfy the launch take-off safety criteria are calculated. Finally, the influence of the system parameters of the launch process on the launch performance was analysed in detail, and the design optimised. Meaningful conclusions were obtained. The analysis method and its results can provide a reference for engineering and theoretical research and development of pneumatic launch systems.

The rotorcraft is a complex dynamical system that demands specialist modelling skills, and a high level of understanding of the aeromechanics arising from the main rotor wake and aerodynamic couplings. One such example is the difficulty predicting off-axis responses, particularly in hover and low-speed flight, associated with induced velocity variation through the rotor disk resulting from the rotor wake distortions. Various approaches have been developed to deal with this phenomenon but usually demand prerequisites of high levels of expertise and profound aerodynamic knowledge. This paper presents a new and practical approach to capturing this wake distortion through an augmented rotor inflow model. The proposed model is coupled with a nonlinear simulation using the FLIGHTLAB environment, and comparisons are made between the simulation results and flight test data from the National Research Council of Canada’s Advanced System Research Aircraft in hover and low speed. Results show good predictability of the proposed nonlinear model structure, demonstrated by its capability to closely match the time responses to multi-step control inputs from flight test. The results reported are part of ongoing research at Liverpool and Cranfield University into rotorcraft simulation fidelity.

An evaluation of the effects of different ice configurations on the flight characteristics of a fixed-wing aircraft is presented. Within a joint research project of German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer simulation models of three supercooled large droplet (SLD) ice configurations were developed for one Phenom 300 prototype. A specific flight test campaign with artificial SLD ice shapes on the aircraft was conducted to gather the relevant flight data. The simulation models for the different ice configuration were obtained by system identification, and specific results for the SLD-ice simulation models are provided. The analysis of aircraft characteristics was based on the results of these high-quality simulation models: the icing-induced changes of the flight performance characteristics evaluated by the interpretation of several parameters like thrust-to-weight ratio and specific excess power. The typical flight performance degradation was found for all ice configurations with different magnitude. The change of aircraft eigenmodes was investigated in detail by analysing the system matrix of the linearised models at a specific trim points. In addition, the diverse effects found for different ice configurations (App. C and SLD) are discussed and the change of root locus is analysed. Furthermore, ice-induced changes of the handling qualities are evaluated using numerical criteria of flying qualities standard “MIL-STD-1797 A”: no significant deterioration was found for the investigated ice configurations.

In this study, a new impact angle control guidance law is proposed against a stationary target in the three-dimensional (3D) plane. A time-varying navigation gain is derived to achieve the specific terminal angle in a longitudinal plane without phased or adding a bias term. A proportional guidance law is also adopted in the lateral plane to achieve an accurate strike. The monotonicity of the look angle and the convergence of the acceleration are analysed and proven to support the proposed method. For the proposed guidance law, estimating time-to-go or giving a switch strategy is unnecessary; the navigation is continuous, which would not result in sudden changes in control input, and is convenient to implement. Extensive simulations, including autopilot lag or real missile model, are performed to validate the efficiency of the proposed method.

This article reports on the development of a fast method for generating the aerodynamic database for subsonic flow over a missile. At present, this is typically achieved using RANS-based CFD, which is expensive for the complex missile geometries and the multiplicity of operating conditions to be evaluated. The presented reduced-order model (ROM) provides a reasonably accurate prediction of the aerodynamic coefficients of the missile (and, in fact, the full flow field around it) within half a minute. In particular, in the interpolative regime, prediction errors for all coefficients are typically less than 1% of their respective maximum values encountered in the database, with extrapolation incurring more error. The empirical approach ‘learns’ from the CFD solutions calculated for a few operating conditions, and then is able to make predictions for any other condition within a feasible set. The learning employs proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) to characterise the most important features of the flow. The prediction is posed as an optimisation problem that aims to find the flow solution as a linear combination of the above POD modes that minimises the residual of the governing equations. Innovations on the prevailing POD-ROM approach include novel implementation of boundary conditions, simplified computation of the aerodynamic coefficients, and a procedure for choosing modelling parameters based on extensive cross-validation. Challenges overcome in application to a problem of industrial relevance are discussed.

This paper discusses the utilisation of deep reinforcement learning algorithms to obtain optimal paths for an aircraft to avoid or minimise radar detection and tracking. A modular approach is adopted to formulate the problem, including the aircraft kinematics model, aircraft radar cross-section model and radar tracking model. A virtual environment is designed for single and multiple radar cases to obtain optimal paths. The optimal trajectories are generated through deep reinforcement learning in this study. Specifically, three algorithms, namely deep deterministic policy gradient, trust region policy optimisation and proximal policy optimisation, are used to find optimal paths for five test cases. The comparison is carried out based on six performance indicators. The investigation proves the importance of these reinforcement learning algorithms in optimal path planning. The results indicate that the proximal policy optimisation approach performed better for optimal paths in general.

The research reported in this paper is aimed at the development of a metric to quantify and predict the extent of pilot control compensation required to fly a wide range of mission task elements. To do this, the utility of a range of time- and frequency-domain measures to examine pilot control activity whilst flying hover/low-speed and forward flight tasks are explored. The tasks were performed by two test pilots using both the National Research Council (Canada)’s Bell 412 Advanced Systems Research Aircraft and the University of Liverpool’s HELIFLIGHT-R simulator. Handling qualities ratings were awarded for each of the tasks and compared with a newly developed weighted adaptive control compensation metric based on discrete pilot inputs, showing good correlation. Moreover, in combination with a time-varying frequency-domain exposure, the proposed metric is shown to be useful for understanding the relationship between the pilot’s subjective assessment, measured control activity and task performance. By collating the results from the subjective and objective metrics for a range of different mission task elements, compensation boundaries are proposed to predict and verify the subjective assessments from the Cooper-Harper Handling Qualities Rating scale.

The cooperative guidance problem of multiple inferior missiles intercepting a hypersonic target with the specific impact angle constraint in the two-dimensional plane is addressed in this paper, taking into consideration variations in a missile’s speed. The guidance law is designed with two subsystems: the direction of line-of-sight (LOS) and the direction of normal to LOS. In the direction of LOS, by applying the algebraic graph theory and the consensus theory, the guidance command is designed to make the system convergent in a finite time to satisfy the goal of cooperative interception. In the direction of normal to LOS, the impact angle is constrained to transform into the LOS angle at the time of interception. In view of the difficulty of measuring unknown target acceleration information in real scenarios, the guidance command is designed by utilising a super-twisting algorithm based on a nonsingular fast-terminal sliding mode (NFTSM) surface. Numerical simulation results manifest that the proposed guidance law performs efficiently and the guidance commands are free of chattering. In addition, the overall performance of this guidance law is assessed with Monte Carlo runs in the presence of measurement errors. The simulation results demonstrate that the robustness can be guaranteed, and that overall efficiency and accuracy in intercepting the hypersonic target are achieved.

This study focuses on vibration reduction for quadcopters and octocopters with elastic, two-bladed, fixed-speed, variable-pitch rotors through the use of relative rotor phasing. The study defines phase modes such as a pitch phase mode with relative phasing between the front and aft rotors, a roll phase mode with relative phasing between the left and right rotors, and a differential phase mode with relative phasing between the clockwise and counter-clockwise spinning rotors for both the quadcopter and the octocopter, as well as additional higher harmonic phase modes for the octocopter. Parametric studies on individual phase modes indicate that, for the quadcopter in forward flight, the pitch and roll phase modes can almost entirely eliminate the 2/rev vibratory forces (at the aircraft level), but the 2/rev vibratory moments cannot be minimised at the same time. By simultaneously using multiple phase modes, a Pareto front can be generated and a solution selected based on the relative emphasis on force or moment vibration reduction. For the octocopter, it was observed that individual higher harmonic modes (specifically the 2c or 2s modes) could almost entirely eliminate both the 2/rev vibratory forces and moments, simultaneously. Compared with vibration levels in forward flight that might, on average, be expected if the rotors were randomly phased, a 62% reduction of a composite vibration index can be achieved on a quadcopter, and complete elimination of vibration was achievable on an octocopter, with appropriate rotor phasing.

This paper presents a new concept of the control strategy in prevention program for the airlines to prevent the injuries of passengers and crew members for transport aircraft. A twin-jet transport aircraft encountered severe clear-air turbulence at transonic flight in descending phase is the study case of the present paper. The nonlinear and unsteady flight controllability models based on flight data mining and the fuzzy-logic modeling of artificial intelligence technique, are utilised to support this new concept. The proposed flight controllability models with the function of nonlinear dynamic inversion are employed to provide flight control strategy through flight simulations of dynamic inversion process; it is an innovation in mathematical modelling of aerospace engineering. Since the sudden plunging motion with the abrupt change in attitude and gravitational acceleration (i.e. the normal load factor) to affect the flight safety the most, hazard mitigation is a great concern for the aviation community. The present study is initiated to examine possible mitigation concepts of accident prevention to provide a training course for loss of control in-flight program to the airlines.

Based on erosion coupon tests, a sand erosion model for 17-4PH steel was developed. The developed erosion model was validated against the results of compressor erosion tests from a generic rig and from other researchers. A high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the test rig was built, a user-defined function was developed to implement the erosion model into the ANSYS CFD software, and the turbulent, two-phase flow-field in multiple reference frames was solved. The simulation results are consistent with the test results from the compressor rig and with experimental findings from other researchers. Specifically, the sand erosion blunts the leading edge, sharpens the trailing edge and increases pressure-surface roughness. The comparisons between the experimental observations and numerical results as well as a quantitative comparison with three other sand erosion models indicate that the developed sand erosion model is adequate for erosion prediction of engine components made of 17-4PH steel.

Civil aircraft that fly long ranges consume a large fraction of civil aviation fuel, injecting an important amount of aviation carbon into the atmosphere. Decarbonising solutions must consider this sector. A philosophical-analytical feasibility of an airliner family to assist in the elimination of carbon dioxide emissions from civil aviation is proposed. It comprises four models based on the integration of the body of a large two-deck airliner with the engines, wings and flight surfaces of a long-range twin widebody jet. The objective of the investigation presented here is to evaluate the impact of liquid hydrogen tank technology in terms of gravimetric efficiency. A range of hydrogen storage gravimetric efficiencies was evaluated; from a pessimistic value of 0.30 to a futuristic value of 0.85. This parameter has a profound influence on the overall fuel system weight and an impact on the integrated performance. The resulting impact is relatively small for the short-range aircraft; it increases with range and is important for the longer-range aircraft. For shorter-range aircraft variants, the tanks needed to store the hydrogen are relatively small, so the impact of tank weight is not significant. Longer range aircraft are weight constrained and the influence of tank weight is important. In the case of the longest range, the deliverable distance increases from slightly over 4,000 nautical miles, with a gravimetric efficiency of 0.3, to nearly 7,000 with a gravimetric efficiency of 0.85.

This paper presents the extension and validation of omni-failure envelopes for first-ply failure (FPF) and last-ply failure (LPF) analysis of advanced composite materials under general three-dimensional (3D) stress states. Phenomenological failure criteria based on invariant structural tensors are implemented to address failure events in multidirectional laminates using the “omni strain failure envelope” concept. This concept enables the generation of safe predictions of FPF and LPF of composite laminates, providing reliable and fast laminate failure indications that can be particularly useful as a design tool for conceptual and preliminary design of composite structures. The proposed extended omni strain failure envelopes allow not only identification of the controlling plies for FPF and LPF, but also of the controlling failure modes. FPF/LPF surfaces for general 3D stress states can be obtained using only the material properties extracted from the unidirectional (UD) material, and can predict membrane FPF or LPF of any laminate independently of lay-up, while considering the effect of out-of-plane stresses. The predictions of the LPF envelopes and surfaces are compared with experimental data on multidirectional laminates from the first and second World-Wide Failure Exercise (WWFE), showing a satisfactory agreement and validating the conservative character of omni-failure envelopes also in the presence of high levels of triaxiality.

Elevator failure may have fatal consequences for fighter aircraft that are unstable due to their high manoeuvrability requirements. Many studies have been conducted in the literature using active and passive fault-tolerant control structures. However, these studies mostly include sophisticated controllers with high computational load that cannot work in real systems. Considering the multi-functionality and broad operational prospects of fighter aircraft, computational load is very important in terms of applicability. In this study, an integrated fault-tolerant control strategy with low computational load is proposed without sacrificing the ability to cope with failures. This control strategy switches between predetermined controllers in the case of failure. One of these controllers is designed to operate in a non-failure condition. This controller is a basic controller that requires very little computational effort. The other controller operates when an asymmetric elevator failure occurs. This controller is a robust fault-tolerant controller that can fly the aircraft safely in case of elevator failure. The switching is decided by a failure detection system. The proposed integrated fault-tolerant control system is verified by non-linear F-16 flight simulations. These simulations show that the proposed method can cope with failures but requires less computational load because it uses a conventional controller in the case of no failure.

Increasingly agile manoeuvre is an advantage in the flight of aircraft, missiles and aerial vehicles, but the principles of accelerating aerodynamics in the transonic regime are only now being fully investigated. This study contributes to the understanding of shock and separation effects on drag during axial acceleration, using a simple geometric configuration. Unsteady shock wave behavior was numerically investigated for an axisymmetric cone-cylinder using a commercial solver and the Moving Reference Frame acceleration technique. This acceleration technique was validated using unsteady numerical and experimental methods. The cone-cylinder was accelerated from Mach number 0.6 to Mach number 1.2 at 100g constant and deceleration was from Mach number 1.2 until Mach number 0.6 at –100g constant. Three cone angles were tested for the cone-cylinder with uniform cylinder diameter. Acceleration through the transonic Mach regime was characterised by a delayed and gradual shock wave development when compared to steady state, demonstrating a clear flow history effect. Deceleration through the transonic Mach regime was characterised by shock wave propagation from the base to the nose. New flow structures appeared during deceleration that do not have counterparts in the steady state, including shock interactions and propagating expansion-compression features. Gross changes in the unsteady drag coefficient curves for each cone-angle are explained with reference to unsteady shock wave behaviour for accelerating and decelerating motion.

Orbiting objects in space are exposed to the risk of collision with space debris over their lifetime. Space debris orbiting in space experiences orbital decay due to various orbital perturbations. This work considers only orbital perturbations due to aerodynamic forces, which spacecraft experience due to the presence of a rarefied atmosphere, causing tumbling motion and orbital decay. Analysis of the orbital decay of a spacecraft is carried out by considering the variation of the drag coefficient as a function of its shape, motion and angle-of-attack. An in-house Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) solver is modified for aerodynamic analysis of a spacecraft orbiting in the free molecular regime in low Earth orbit. In addition, an orbital dynamics model is developed to simulate the tumbling motion of a spacecraft and its orbital decay. The orbital decay trajectory is predicted for two sample spacecrafts using the aerodynamic coefficients obtained from the in-house DSMC solver as inputs to the orbital decay model. This study analyses and explores in detail the effects of the aerodynamic coefficients and shape of a spacecraft on its orbital decay.

The German research Cluster of Excellence SE2A (Sustainable and Energy Efficient Aviation) is investigating different technologies to be implemented in the following decades, to achieve more efficient air transportation. This paper studies the Hybrid Laminar Flow Control (HLFC) using boundary layer suction for drag reduction, combined with other technologies for load and structural weight reduction and a novel full-electric propulsion system. A multidisciplinary design optimisation framework is presented, enabling physics-based analysis and optimisation of a fully electric aircraft wing equipped with HLFC technologies and load alleviation, and new structures and materials. The main focus is on simulation and optimisation of the boundary layer suction and its influence on wing design and optimisation. A quasi three-dimensional aerodynamic analysis is used for drag estimation of the wing. The tool executes the aerofoil analysis using XFOILSUC, which provides accurate drag estimation through boundary layer suction. The optimisation is based on a genetic algorithm for maximum take-off weight (MTOW) minimisation. The optimisation results show that the active flow control applied on the optimised geometry results in more than 45% reduction in aircraft drag coefficient, compared to the same geometry without HLFC technology. The power absorbed for the HLFC suction system implies a battery mass variation lower than 2%, considering the designed range as top-level requirement (TLR).

The main purpose of this study was to combine the currently separate objectives of aerodynamic performance and manufacturing efficiency, then find an optimal point of operation for both objectives. An additional goal of the study was to explore the effects of changes in design features, the position of the spars, and analyse how the changes influenced the optimal operating conditions. A machine-learning approach was taken to combine and model the gathered aero-manufacturing data, and a multi-objective optimisation approach utilising genetic algorithms was implemented to find the trade-off relationship between optimal target objectives (mission performance and manufacturability). The main achievements and findings of the study were: The study was a success in building a machine-learning model for the combined aero-manufacturing data utilising software library XGBoost; multi-objective optimisation, which did not include spar positions as a variable found the trade-off region between high manufacturability and high mission performance, with choices that offered reasonably high values of both; there was no clearly identified correlation between a small change in spar position and the target objectives; multi-objective optimisation with spar positions resulted in a trade-off relationship between target objectives, which was different from the trade-off relationship found in optimisation without spar positions; multi-objective optimisation with spar positions also offered more flexibility in the choice of manufacturing processes available for a given design; and the range of bump amplitudes for solutions found by multi-objective-optimisation with spar positions was lower and more focused than those found by optimisation without spar positions.

In tandem with the fast-growing demand for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance and reconnaissance, advanced controllers for these critical systems are needed. This paper proposes a flight dynamics controller design that considers various uncertainties for the Hydra Technologies UAS-S4 Ehécatl. In order to be realistic, in addition to flight dynamics nonlinearities, three main sources of uncertainties are considered, as those caused by unknown controller’s parameters, modeling errors, and external disturbances. A Robust adaptive fuzzy logic controller is designed, in charge of nonlinear flight dynamics in presence of a variety of uncertainties. The nonlinear flight dynamics is modeled based on the Takagi-Sugeno method relying on the soft association of local linear models. Since this controller is model-based, an optimal reference model is defined, which is stabilised by the Linear Quadratic Regulator procedure. A fuzzy logic controller is then designed for the nonlinear model. Lastly, with the aim to handle the uncertainties, the gains of the fuzzy controller are reconfigured, and are continuously adjusted by Lyapunov-based robust adaptive laws. The performance of the UAS-S4 Robust adaptive fuzzy logic controller is evaluated in terms of lateral and longitudinal flight dynamics stabilisation, and the reference model state variables tracking under various uncertainties.
