The aerodynamic performance of conventional aircraft configurations are mainly affected by the wing and horizontal tail. Drag reduction by shape optimisation of the wing, while taking into account the aircraft trimmed constraint, has more benefit than focusing solely on the wing. So in order to evaluate this approach, the following study presents results of a single and multipoint aerodynamic shape optimisation of the wing-body-tail configuration, defined by the Aerodynamic Design Discussion Group (ADODG). Most of the aerodynamic shape optimisation problems published in the last years are focused mainly on the wing as the main driver for performance improvement, with no trim constraint and/or excess drag obtained from the fuselage, fins or other parts. This work partially fills this gap by an investigation of RANS-based aerodynamic optimisation for transonic trimmed flight. Mesh warping and geometry parametrisation is accomplished by fitting the multi-block structured grid to a B-spline volumes and performing the mesh movement by using surface control points embedded within the free-form deformation (FFD) volumes. A gradient-based optimisation algorithm is used with an adjoint method in order to compute the derivatives of the objective and constraint functions with respect to the design variables. In this work the aerodynamic shape optimisation of the CRM wing-body-tail configuration is investigated, including a trim constraint that is satisfied by rotating the horizontal tail. The shape optimisation is driven by 432 design variables that envelope the wing surface, and 120 shape variables for the tail, as well as the angle of attack and tail rotation angles. The constraints are the lift coefficient, wing’s thickness controlled by 1,000 control points, and the wing’s volume. For the untrimmed configuration the drag coefficient is reduced by 5.76%. Optimising the wing with a trim condition by tail rotation results in shock-free design with a considerably improved drag, even better than the untrimmed-optimised case. The second optimisation problem studied is a single and multi-point lift constraint drag minimisation of a gliding configuration wing in transonic viscous flow. The shock is eliminated, reducing the drag of the untrimmed configuration by more than 60%, using 192 design variables. Further robustness is achieved through a multi-point optimisation with more than 45% drag reduction.

Shock-induced vortex breakdown, which occurs on the delta wings at transonic speed, causes a sudden and significant change in the aerodynamic coefficients at a moderate angle-of-attack. Wind-tunnel tests show a sudden jump in the aerodynamic coefficients such as lift force, pitching moment and centre of pressure which affect the longitudinal stability and controllability of the vehicle. A pneumatic jet operated at sonic condition blown spanwise and along the vortex core over a 60° swept delta-wing-body configuration is found to be effective in postponing this phenomenon by energising the vortical structure, pushing the vortex breakdown location downstream. The study reports that a modest level of spanwise blowing enhances the lift by about 6 to 9% and lift-to-drag ratio by about 4 to 9%, depending on the free-stream transonic Mach number, and extends the usable angle-of-attack range by 2°. The blowing is found to reduce the magnitude of unsteady pressure fluctuations by 8% to 20% in the aft portion of the wing, depending upon the method of blowing. Detailed investigations carried out on the location of blowing reveal that the blowing close to the apex of the wing maximises the benefits.

Comprehensive understanding of propulsive jet aerodynamics and aeroacoustics is key to engine design for reduced jet noise and infra-red signature in civil and military aerospace, respectively. Illustrated examples are provided of other aerodynamic/aeroacoustic problems involving jet development, including chevron nozzles, increased jet/wing/flap interference (as fan diameter increases), high acoustic environment (and potentially damaging screech) of supersonic jets on carrier decks and the strongly Three-Dimensional (3D) unsteady flow during the in-ground effect operation of Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft. To date, laboratory/rig test measurements have primarily been used to identify design solutions; increased use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) would help achieve cost/time reductions, but Reynolds-Average Navier–Stokes (RANS) CFD with statistical turbulence modelling has proven inadequate for such flows. The scenarios described are far removed from flows used to calibrate model constants, and predictive accuracy demands detailed insight into unsteady flow. Large-Eddy Simulation (LES), whilst computationally more demanding, offers a potential solution. Research undertaken to assess LES capability to address the challenges described is reviewed here. This demonstrates that tremendous progress has been made, indicating that LES can provide sufficiently accurate predictions, representing high value for engineering design. A series of validation studies of increasing realism to practical engineering systems is presented to underpin this conclusion. Finally, areas for further work are suggested to support the combined application of RANS and LES that is probably the optimum way forward.

Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs) are increasingly starting to dominate the lower airspace. This increases the chance that a UAS will hit the means of transport of people e.g. aircraft, helicopters. For air traffic, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are in the process of determining the threat of a UAS impact on aircraft. This will result in new rules that may impose new, or additional, requirements on the ‘wetted zones’ of aircraft and the like. Current research suggests that aircraft wetted-areas (e.g. wing leading edge) that are certified for so called ‘bird-impact’ may not sustain a ‘UAS-impact’, such an UAS-impact may even damage the primary load carrying structure. But what would happen if multiple UASs are flying close to one other? To the authors’ knowledge, the damage caused by multiple UAS impacts on a wetted surface zone has not yet been established.

A finite element modelling approach is chosen for the UAS; specifically, a Lagrangian approach is applied using material nonlinearity and damage. A comparison is made between the damage caused by a bird impactor and a UAS impactor model. To establish the resulting damage of multiple UAS impacts on a wing leading edge, a multiple-UAS impact scenario is executed. The results show that a wing leading edge capable of sustaining a bird impact may not be capable of sustaining a UAS impact, which supports previous findings. Furthermore, for all simulated cases the front spar was not penetrated by components that managed to enter the leading edge. However, for the heavier drone some deformation of the front spar was observed. The multiple UAS impact scenario causes additional damage to the leading edge with respect to the single UAS impact, with greater deformation of the front spar being observed.

Single pilot passenger aircraft concepts are being developed by several manufacturers. Various technological approaches are being explored: One concept is to use a Harbour Pilot dedicated to providing support for departures and arrivals. The Harbour Pilot has comprehensive knowledge of the terminal area airspace, procedures and operations. If a single pilot aircraft is to be viable, however, the number of supporting personnel needs to be significantly smaller than the number of First Officers normally employed for a two-crew aeroplane, but the number such staff has yet to be determined. This study models operations by a UK low-cost operator at a regional airport to determine the optimum number of Harbour Pilots required to support operations throughout the day. The model uses a simplified timeline analysis with task data incorporated into a dynamic discrete event modelling system allowing for multiple replications using various configurations. Results suggest that for this operation six Harbour Pilots per shift used flexibly to support both departures and arrivals would be required.

The locus of aerodynamic centres of a finite wing is the collection of all spanwise section aerodynamic centres, and depends on aspect ratio, wing sweep and planform shape. This locus is of great importance in the positioning of vortex elements in lifting-line theory. Traditionally, these vortex elements are placed along the quarter-chord of a wing, leading to inaccurate predictions of aerodynamic coefficients for swept wings due to the discontinuity in the line of vorticity at the wing root. An analytical solution was presented by Küchemann in 1956 to determine the locus of aerodynamic centres as a function of sweep. While experimental studies have been performed to visualise this locus, no large amount of data is available to fully evaluate the accuracy of Küchemann’s analytical solution. In the present study, a numerical approach is taken using a high-order panel method for inviscid, incompressible flow to calculate the locus of aerodynamic centres for elliptic wings over a wide range of sweep angles, aspect ratios and profile thicknesses. An inviscid panel method is chosen over full CFD solutions because of their ability to isolate the inviscid phenomena. Küchemann’s prediction is compared to this numerical data. The root mean square error is calculated for each wing in a broad design space to determine the accuracy of Küchemann’s theory. It is shown to be remarkably accurate over the range of cases studied, with the root mean square error staying below 4% for all wings with aft sweep and aspect ratios higher than $R_A=5$ . The actual difference between Küchemann’s prediction and numerical data is lower than that for the majority of the span for many of the wing designs considered, with the RMS error being skewed by the results at the tip. Results demonstrate that Küchemann’s analytical equations can be used as an accurate approximation for the locus of aerodynamic centres and could be used in modern numerical lifting-line algorithms*.

Camber morphing is an effective way to control the lift generated by any aerofoil and potentially improve the range (as measured by the lift-to-drag ratio) and endurance (as measured by $C_l^{3/2}/C_d$ ). This can be especially useful for fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) undergoing different flying manoeuvres and flight phases. This work investigates the aerodynamic characteristics of the NACA0012 aerofoil morphed using a Single Corrugated Variable-Camber (SCVC) morphing approach. Structural analysis and morphed shapes are obtained based on small-deformation beam theory using chain calculations and validated using finite-element software. The aerofoil is then reconstructed from the camber line using a Radial Basis Function (RBF)-based interpolation method (J.H.S. Fincham and M.I. Friswell, “Aerodynamic optimisation of a camber morphing aerofoil,” Aerosp. Sci. Technol., 2015). The aerodynamic analysis is done by employing two different finite-volume solvers (OpenFOAM and ANSYS-Fluent) and a panel method code (XFoil). Results reveal that the aerodynamic coefficients predicted by the two finite-volume solvers using a fully turbulent flow assumption are similar but differ from those predicted by XFoil. The aerodynamic efficiency and endurance factor of morphed aerofoils indicate that morphing is beneficial at moderate to high lift requirements. Further, the optimal morphing angle increases with an increase in the required lift. Finally, it is observed for a fixed angle-of-attack that an optimum morphing angle exists for which the aerodynamic efficiency becomes maximum.

This paper presents a study of a novel type of magnetic nozzle that allows for three-dimensional (3-D) steering of a plasma plume. Numerical simulations were performed using Tech-X’s USim® software to quantify the nozzle’s capabilities. A 2-D planar magnetic nozzle was applied to plumes of a nominal pulsed inductive plasma (PIP) source with discharge parameters similar to those of Missouri S&T’s Missouri Plasmoid Experiment (MPX). Argon and xenon plumes were considered. Simulations were verified and validated through a mesh convergence study as well as comparison with available experimental data. Periodicity was achieved over the simulation run time and phase angle samples were taken to examine plume evolution over pulse cycles. The resulting pressure, velocity, and density fields were analysed for nozzle angles from 0° to 14°. It was found that actual plume divergence was small compared to the nozzle angle. Even with an offset angle of 14° for the magnetic nozzle, the plume vector angle was only about 2° for argon and less than 1° for xenon. The parameters that had the most effect on the vectoring angle were found to be the coil current and inlet velocity.

Hypersonic aerothermodynamics for a re-entry vehicle approaching the earth’s atmosphere is critical in the exploration of space. These vehicles often encounter various flow regimes due to the density variations and have surface abnormalities. The backward-facing step (BFS) is one such simplified configuration for modeling anomalies around such space vehicles. The present work examines rarefied hypersonic flow over a BFS using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. The purpose of this research is focused on exploring the various loads encountered by a re-entry vehicle passing through different altitudes covering different rarefaction regimes. The fluid considered was non-reacting air, with the free-stream Mach number as 25, and the Knudsen number considered ranged from 0.05-21.10. The influence of the Knudsen number on flow characteristics has been elucidated graphically in various streamwise directions. The normalised flow properties such as velocity, pressure, temperature and density showed an increasing trend with the Knudsen number due to compressibility and viscous heating effects. In all flow regimes, there was an appearance of flow recirculation. With rarefaction, the recirculation lengths decreased, whereas the boundary layer thickness showed an increase. The aerodynamic surface properties such as pressure coefficient, skin friction, and heat transfer coefficient, by and large, showed an increase with the Knudsen number. When the chemical reactions were accounted for and compared against the non-reacting flows, the velocity, pressure, and density field showed no marked variation; however, considerable variations were observed in the temperature field. Furthermore, the present study also depicts the compressibility factor contour, showing the flow regions that diverge from the ideal gas behaviour.

The impact of alternative aviation jet fuels and their properties on lean blowout (LBO) limits has recently raised several questions in the jet fuel area. There is a need for a detailed investigation of the impact of fuel properties on the LBO limit involving actual engine hardware. This study investigates the impact of a range of alternative aviation jet fuels with notable differences in physical and chemical properties and derived cetane number (DCN) on the LBO limit and their effects on key performance indicators. LBO performance results for ten different alternative fuels using a Rolls-Royce single-can Tay combustor are presented in this study. The study also assesses impact of different equivalence ratios and flow rates on LBO, with the aim of determining the impact of a certain range of operating conditions. The results are further analysed to determine the influence of fuel chemical and physical properties on the LBO limit. Finally, based on results in the above experiments, individual fuel properties are adjusted for subsequent experimental analysis of blended fuels. With this approach, 25 additional fuel blends are evaluated and presented, with an emphasis on varying the DCN. This study provides effective data and results to facilitate future fuel optimisation and reduce the risk of a negative performance of new fuels in gas turbines.

Reinforcement learning has previously been applied to the problem of controlling a perched landing manoeuvre for a custom sweep-wing aircraft. Previous work showed that the use of domain randomisation to train with atmospheric disturbances improved the real-world performance of the controllers, leading to increased reward. This paper builds on the previous project, investigating enhancements and modifications to the learning process to further improve performance, and reduce final state error. These changes include modifying the observation by adding information about the airspeed to the standard aircraft state vector, employing further domain randomisation of the simulator, optimising the underlying RL algorithm and network structure, and changing to a continuous action space. Simulated investigations identified hyperparameter optimisation as achieving the most significant increase in reward performance. Several test cases were explored to identify the best combination of enhancements. Flight testing was performed, comparing a baseline model against some of the best performing test cases from simulation. Generally, test cases that performed better than the baseline in simulation also performed better in the real world. However, flight tests also identified limitations with the current numerical model. For some models, the chosen policy performs well in simulation yet stalls prematurely in reality, a problem known as the reality gap.

NASA is conducting investigations in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) aircraft and operations. AAM missions are characterised by ranges below 300 nm, including rural and urban operations, passenger carrying as well as cargo delivery. Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is a subset of AAM and is the segment that is projected to have the most economic benefit and be the most difficult to develop. The NASA Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology project is developing UAM VTOL aircraft designs that can be used to focus and guide research activities in support of aircraft development for emerging aviation markets. These NASA concept vehicles encompass relevant UAM features and technologies, including propulsion architectures, highly efficient yet quiet rotors, and aircraft aerodynamic performance and interactions. The configurations adopted are generic, intentionally different in appearance and design detail from prominent industry arrangements. Already these UAM concept aircraft have been used in numerous engineering investigations, including work on meeting safety requirements, achieving good handling qualities, and reducing noise below helicopter certification levels. Focusing on the concept vehicles, observations are made regarding the engineering of Advanced Air Mobility aircraft.

The electrification of the commuter aircraft is instrumental in the development of novel propulsion systems. The scope of this work aims to explore the design space of a parallel hybrid-electric configuration with an entry into service date of 2030 and beyond and determine the impact of other disciplines on conceptual design, such as components positioning, aircraft stability and structural integrity. Three levels of conceptual sizing are applied and linked with a parametric aircraft geometry tool, to generate the aircraft’s geometry and position the components. Subsequently, the structural optimisation of the wing box is performed, providing the centre of gravity of the components placed inside the wing, that minimise the induced stresses. Furthermore, the stability and trim analysis follow, with the former being highly affected by the positioning of components. Results are compared to a similar aircraft with entry into service technology of 2014 and it is indicated that in terms of block fuel reduction the total electrification benefit increases with the increase of degree of hybridisation, if aircraft mass is kept constant. On the other hand, if battery specific energy is kept constant, similar block fuel reduction is possible with lower hybridisation degrees. The potential for improvement in terms of carbon dioxide emissions and block fuel reduction ranges from 15.73% to 21.44% compared to the conventional aircraft, for levels of battery specific energy of 0.92 and 1.14 kWh/kg respectively. Finally, the component positioning evaluation indicates a maximum weight limitation of 240 kg for the addition of an aft boundary layer ingestion fan to a tube and wing aircraft configuration, without compromising the aircraft static stability.

The satellite attitude control system (SACS) is a complicated system. In order to reflect the relationship among different components in SACS and analyse the impact of component faults on system performance, a complete simulation platform of the SACS based on Simulink is built in this paper. With the embedding of the specific reaction flywheel, gyroscope and earth sensor model, and the design of the controller based on the quaternion feedback, the simulation platform can not only simulate the real SACS at the component level, but it can also realise the injection of component faults for analysing the system performance. Simulations are conducted to verify the performance of the simulation platform. Simulation results show that this simulation platform has the ability to accurately reflect the control performance of the SACS, and the output accuracy of the component model is high. The research results reveal that this simulation platform can provide model support for verifying the algorithm of fault diagnosis, prediction and tolerant control of the SACS. This simulation platform is easy to use and can be expanded and improved.

Optimisation-based control design techniques are applied to multicopters with variable-RPM rotors. The handling qualities and motor current requirements of a quadcopter, hexacopter and octocopter with equal gross weights (5,360N) and total disk areas (producing a 287N/m $^2$ disk loading) are compared in hover. For axes that rely on the rotor thrust (all except yaw), the increased inertia of the larger rotors on the quadcopter increase the current requirement, relative to vehicles with fewer, smaller rotors. Both the quadcopter and hexacopter have maximum current margin requirements (relative to hover) during a step command in longitudinal velocity. In yaw, rotor inertia is irrelevant, as the reaction torque of the motor is the same whether the rotor is accelerating or overcoming drag. This, combined with the octocopter’s greater inertia as well as the fact that it requires 30% less current to drive its motors in hover, results in the octocopter requiring the greatest current margin, relative to hover conditions. To meet handling qualities requirements, the total weight of the motors of the octocopter and hexacopter is comparable at 13.5% weight fraction, but the quadcopter’s motors are heavier, requiring 16% weight fraction. If the longitudinal and lateral axes were flown in ACAH mode, rather than TRC mode, the total motor weight of all configurations would be nearly identical, requiring about 13.5% weight fraction for motors (compared to 7–9% weight fraction from hover torque requirements).

Research on propeller performance has been reinvigorated by the development of new classes of vehicles, ranging from electrically powered fixed-wing aircraft, to multi-rotor electrical Vertical Take-off/Landing (eVTOL) vehicles and tilt-rotor aircraft. These types of aircraft utilise a range of modern propellers, often with more advanced planforms and features such as anhedral, and operate in flight envelopes that are outwith the traditional bands of performance. The use of advanced materials (mostly composites), high geometrical sweeps and variable angular velocities are the source of unsteady aerodynamics, that is often coupled with the blade’s structural response. Data from experimental investigations is mostly historic, with the majority of studies conducted before 1960, when aviation shifted rapidly towards jet propulsion. These studies lack in flutter boundary assessment. Modern propellers are likely to be pushed toward their flutter boundaries, but the experimental database published to-date is insufficient to provide flutter boundary assessment. This review examines the value of the available experimental research and the status of the state-of-the-art numerical methods, in order to establish the requirements for modern research on propeller stall flutter.

Design success mostly depends on understanding and realising product requirements, which are nested with different levels of stakeholders and specific market demands. Emerging markets are volatile and non-linear for understanding user-specific needs, particularly related to aircraft design. We attempt herein to elicit specific requirements through a proposed requirements elicitation process based on functional, physical and behavioural viewpoints. An evaluation of those critical requirements is also performed through Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to reveal the fitness of the customer requirements (raw requirements) in relation to the technical measures. After selecting all projected potential users, a Systems Modelling Language (SysML) use-case diagram is also summarised to illustrate the user’s relation to the system functions. Some raw requirements are verified through constraint analysis and cost examination as an exemplary approach to present the transformation from raw to final requirements. The data are collected and analysed to construct the aircraft’s key specifications. Most importantly, how to identify good requirements that define the needs, attainability, clarity and verifiability is demonstrated.

In addition, it is demonstrated through this study that there is a need of a specific type of general aviation aircraft that may fulfil the unique demands of emerging economies by satisfying their socio-economic conditions.

Intense acoustic loads from jet noise cause noise pollution and induce failures, such as the malfunctioning of electronic devices and fatigue failure of internal/external structures. Consequently, the prediction of jet noise characteristics is crucial in the development of high-speed vehicles. This study presents acoustic experiments and predictions for an under-expanded, unheated jet using a small-scale prototype. Outdoor measurements are carried out using a vertical ejection setup. Acoustic characteristics are measured using both linear and circular microphone arrays. Additionally, numerical prediction of the same jet noise is performed using a detached eddy simulation and the permeable Ffowcs-Williams and Hawkings acoustic analogy. The vertical experimental setup exhibits the typical acoustic characteristics of a supersonic jet in terms of directivity and broadband shock-associated noise. Moreover, the numerical prediction exhibits satisfactory accuracy for the jet downstream, where the large-scale turbulence structures of the directivity predominate. However, discrepancy increases in the domain of lower directivity. The presented experiment and prediction will be extended to future studies regarding the noise of various deflector duct configurations impinging on supersonic jets.

This paper introduces the Low Acoustic Noise and Turbulence (LANT) wind tunnel of the Sao Carlos School of Engineering, University of Sao Paulo (USP-EESC), Brazil. The closed-loop wind tunnel features several devices to improve flow uniformity, reduce swirl, and lower the background acoustic noise and turbulence, enabling stability and aeroacoustic experiments. The design criteria was based on the best practices reported, in particular for low turbulence wind tunnels. Yet, these criteria are conflicting and we discuss the decisions that had to be made and present flow quality results that were achieved. The 16-bladed axial fan with 13-blade stators is driven by a variable-speed electric motor. At the corners, 100 mm dense acoustic foam is installed on the vertical walls, floor and ceiling, and the turning vanes are filled with acoustic-absorbing material. The long settling chamber contains a 3.175 mm mesh hexagonal honeycomb and five fine mesh nylon screens, ending in a 7:1 area ratio short contraction. The 3-m long closed-working section has a $1\times 1\ {\rm m}^2$ cross-section area. At 15 m/s the working section wall boundary layer is less than 100 mm thick, providing an area of at least $800\times 800\ \mathrm{mm}^2$ where the streamwise flow uniformity was within 1%. In the 10–30 m/s flow speed range, the turbulence intensity ranged from 0.05% to 0.071% and the background acoustic noise level, obtained with an inflow microphone, ranged from 90 and 110 dB. A benchmark experiment on a flat plate boundary layer produced an almost perfect two-dimensional Blasius profile up to $Re_x \approx 2.5 \times 10^6$ . A beamforming benchmark experiment on aeroacoustics accurately identified the sound emitted by a cylinder immersed in the flow.

This article presents the research status and development trends of Vertical Take-off and Landing hybrid Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. In this research, a special emphasis is laid on the design philosophies, analysis techniques, dynamic modeling, and control laws of hybrid VTOL UAVs. It studies and compares various design configurations of hybrid VTOL UAVs, based on key design features such as aerodynamic performance, flight stability, structural strength, propulsive power, avionics systems, flight controls, autonomy, ease of fabrication and flight transition mechanisms. The benefits and shortcomings of each design configuration are expressed in detail. A selection problem is formulated in a fuzzy environment and the Multi-Attribute Decision-Making technique is employed. Ongoing research projects in the field are discussed and a novel design of tail sitter hybrid VTOL UAV is presented by the authors. This work serves as a useful guide for the prospective explorers of this challenging field of research.
