Far from being cut-down versions of the adult form, children’s dictionaries constitute a distinct genre with their own history and methodology. The chapter charts the development of children’s dictionaries, from Renaissance bilingual dictionaries to the present day, showing how they have evolved to reflect changing perceptions of childhood. It discusses the bewildering range of dictionaries now available for children as they progress from ABCs and picture dictionaries to those for school use and creative writing, including innovative subgenres based on fictional worlds and dictionaries supporting language revitalisation. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples, the chapter explores content and page design adapted to engage young readers. It considers how lexicographers aim to reflect the world as experienced by children, from the selection of headwords to the framing of definitions, using dedicated corpora and reading programmes. The tension between descriptive and prescriptive approaches is often acute in children’s dictionaries, for example over the inclusion of slang and taboo words, and lexicographers aim to balance young dictionary users’ needs against adult perceptions of what a children’s dictionary is for.

Genesis and development of EFL learner’s dictionaries, innovative methods and features, and influence on dictionaries in other genres. Pioneering examples (NMED, GEW, ISED) featured simple definition, un/countability, verb patterns, collocations, ample examples, pictorial illustrations, IPA, etc., and paved the path for learner’s dictionaries to come; later generations of learner’s dictionaries converged into corpus basis and towards user-friendliness. Innovative and distinctive features include grading of headword importance, transparent grammar indication, signposts/menus for polysemous entries, controlled defining vocabulary, full-sentence definitions, and extensive use of corpora (manifest in frequency-based sense ordering, identification of frequent grammatical and lexical collocations, authentic illustrative examples). Features of English learner’s dictionaries are now incorporated in dictionaries for native speakers, and English learner’s dictionaries and English–Japanese dictionaries have been mutually influential. The evolution and innovation of learner’s dictionaries are mainly motivated by EFL learners’ needs for comprehension and production, driven by users’ rudimentary reference skills, and influenced by digital technology.

‘Language policy’ is a highly diverse term, encompassing all attempts to purposefully influence language use. Government language policy is broadly considered to have originated as a distinct field of research and policymaking in the 1970s, but we begin the chapter with a historical review of its precursors dating back several centuries. We trace the roots of contemporary language policy to two broad historical developments: Bible translation and universal education. These laid the foundations for what would become language policy. In the contemporary language policy period, we divide our discussion across three fields: modern foreign languages (MFL), indigenous languages and community languages. These categorisations come from policy, not linguistics or sociology. These groups of languages are treated differently in policy, so we divide them accordingly and trace their origins and developments in three political eras from the 1970s onwards: neoliberalism (1970s–80s), New Public Management (1990s–2000s), and austerity (2008 onwards). We show how each field of language policy has been indelibly shaped and contoured by changing political conditions and priorities. Lastly, we consider forms of language that tend to fall outside the scope of government policy, and what extra this reveals about language policy.

The introduction sets the book’s agenda: to offer a novel account of crusade culture from the Mamlūk reconquest of Acre (1291) to the Ottoman siege of Constantinople (1453) drawing on Middle English romances and their contexts in various literary, historical, and legal documents (in English, French, Occitan, German, and Latin). The political culture to which post-1291 crusade romances belonged, I argue, was ambivalent, self-critical, and riddled with anxieties. These anxieties were about issues as fundamental and diverse as God’s endorsement of the crusading enterprise, the conversion of crusaders to Islam, sinfulness and divisions within the Christian community, and the morality of violence. After situating the book’s key claims within debates on Edward Said’s Orientalism and crusade literature, I present its methodology: engaged historicism, attention to how romance writers adapted their sources, and analysis of emotional rhetoric. The book’s contributions to the history of emotions and Middle English studies are discussed, as are the new insights it provides into the historical dimensions of the genre of romance.

This chapter starts developing our central linear time-variant (LTV) prototype environment, a class that coincides perfectly with linear algebra and matrix algebra, making the correspondence between system and matrix computations a mutually productive reality. People familiar with the classical approach, in which the z-transform or other types of transforms are used, will easily recognize the notational or graphic resemblance, but there is a major difference: everything stays in the context of elementary matrix algebra, no complex function calculus is involved, and only the simplest matrix operations, namely addition and multiplication of matrices, are needed. Appealing expressions for the state-space realization of a system appear, as well as the global representation of the input–output operator in terms of four block diagonal matrices and the (now noncommutative but elementary) causal shift Z. The consequences for and relation to linear time-invariant (LTI) systems and infinitely indexed systems are fully documented in *-sections, which can be skipped by students or readers more interested in numerical linear algebra than in LTI system control or estimation.

This chapter presents an overview of Multicultural London English (MLE), the urban contact vernacular that has emerged in London in recent years. It starts with a discussion of how similar varieties have been reported across other European cities and have become known as multiethnolects, meaning that they are not restricted to any particular ethnic group but are available to anyone, including speakers from non-immigrant backgrounds. The chapter then focuses on the specific social and historical circumstances that have led to the emergence of MLE, from its beginnings in the 1980s to the present day. After presenting the linguistic characteristics of MLE, a discussion follows of the ways in which MLE has been perceived in the media and by users and non-users of MLE, and how attitudes towards the variety may influence its trajectory in the future. While there is some suggestion that the variety (or some variation thereof) may not be restricted to London, it is not clear whether MLE will stabilise to an everyday vernacular spoken in inner-city neighbourhoods and beyond or whether it will divide along social and ethnic lines. The chapter concludes with a discussion of new research being undertaken to answer some of these issues.

Regulators are increasingly aware of the practical implication of such phenomena as algorithmic bias, price discrimination, blackbox AI as well as the misuse of the personal information of consumers. The dangers of algorithmic exploitation in the context of mass market consumer transactions is underexplored. The chapter describes how technology-driven exploitative commercial practices have passed under the legal and regulatory radar. It examines the extent recent regulatory addresses the impact of such practices.
