New time series photometry of WISE J152614.95-111326.4, an eclipsing binary candidate, has been obtained. Full cycles of variation were covered in five filters, ranging from B to z. Archival time series photometry is also available from several sources. The phased light curve shape changes from a double wave form in the red, to a single wave at shorter wavelengths. Analysis of the spectral energy distribution and SALT spectra shows the presence of a cool (∼ 7250−7900 K) white dwarf and an M6 star. The light curves can be explained by a hot spot on the opposing hemisphere of the white dwarf. The star may be in a pre-cataclysmic variable phase with a very low rate of mass flow from the red dwarf to the white dwarf, such that no flickering is evident. Evidence in favour of this hypothesis is that the period of the system (2.25 h) is in the cataclysmic variable period gap. It is speculated that a weak magnetic field associated with the white dwarf funnels accreted material onto a magnetic pole. Amplitudes of the W1 and W2 WISE light curves are anomalously large. The possibility is discussed that variability in this spectral region is primarily driven by electron cyclotron radiation.

Discs of gas and dust are ubiquitous around protostars. Hypothetical viscous interactions within the disc are thought to cause the gas and dust to accrete onto the star. Turbulence within the disc is theorised to be the source of this disc viscosity. However, observed protostellar disc turbulence often appears to be small and not always conducive to disc accretion. In addition, theories for disc and planet evolution have difficulty in explaining the observed disc rings/gaps which form much earlier than expected.

Protostellar accretion discs are observed to contain significant quantities of dust and pebbles. Observations also show that some of this material is ejected from near the protostar, where it travels to the outer regions of the disc. Such solid infalling material has a relatively small amount of angular momentum compared to the material in the disc. This infalling material lowers the angular momentum of the disc and should drive a radial flow towards the protostar.

We show that the local radial accretion speed of the disc is proportional to the mass rate of infalling material onto the disc. Higher rates of infall onto the disc implies higher radial accretion disc speeds. As such, regions with high rates of infall of gas, dust, and pebbles onto the disc will produce gaps on relatively short timescales in the disc, while regions associated with relative low rates of infalling material will produce disc rings. As such, the inner edge of a disc gap will tend to have a higher surface density, which may enhance the probability of planet formation. In addition, the outer edge of a disc gap will act as a dust trap and may also become a site for planet formation.

For the early Solar System, such a process may have collected O$^{16}$-poor forsterite dust from the inner regions of the protosolar disc and O$^{16}$-rich CAIs and AOAs from the inner edge regions of the protosolar disc, thereby constructing a region favourable to the formation of pre-chondritic planetesimals.

In order to gain more information on the 236 M dwarfs identified in the First Byurakan Survey (FBS) low-resolution (lr) spectroscopic database, Gaia EDR3 high-accuracy astrometric and photometric data and Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) data are used to characterise these M dwarfs and their possible multiplicity. Among the sample of 236 relatively bright $(7.3 < K_S < 14.4)$ M dwarfs, 176 are new discoveries. The Gaia EDR3 G broadband magnitudes are in the range $11.3 < G < 17.1$. New distance information based on the EDR3 parallaxes are used to estimate the G-band absolute magnitudes. Nine FBS M dwarfs out of 176 newly discovered lie within 25 pc of the Sun. The FBS 0909-082 is the most distant $(r=780$ pc) M dwarf of the analysed sample, with a G-band absolute magnitude $M(G) = 9.18$, $M = 0.59$ M$_{\odot}$, $L = 0.13597$ L$_{\odot}$, and $T_{eff}$ = 3844 K; it can be classified as M1 - M2 subtype dwarf. The nearest is FBS 0250+167, a M7 subtype dwarf located at 3.83 pc from the Sun with a very high proper motion (5.13 arcsec yr$^{-1}$). The TESS estimated masses lie in the range 0.095 ($\pm$0.02) M$_{\odot}\leq$ $M\leq$ 0.7 ($\pm$ 0.1) M$_{\odot}$ and $T_{eff}$ in the range 4000 K < $T_{eff}$ < 2790 K. We analyse colour-colour and colour-absolute magnitude diagram (CaMD) diagrams for the M dwarfs. Results suggest that 27 FBS M dwarfs are double or multiple systems. The observed spectral energy distribution (SED) for some of the M dwarfs can be used to classify potential infrared excess. Using TESS light curves, flares are detected for some FBS M dwarfs. Finally, for early and late sub-classes of the M dwarfs, the detection range for survey is estimated for the first time.

The instability strip (IS) of classical Cepheids has been extensively studied theoretically. Comparison of the theoretical IS edges with those obtained empirically, using the most recent Cepheids catalogs available, can provide us with insights into the physical processes that determine the position of the IS boundaries. We investigate the empirical positions of the IS of the classical Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using data of classical fundamental-mode and first-overtone LMC Cepheids from the OGLE-IV variable star catalog, together with a recent high-resolution reddening map from the literature. We studied their position on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and determined the IS borders by tracing the edges of the color distribution along the strip. We obtain the blue and red edges of the IS in V- and I-photometric bands, in addition to Teff and log L⊙. The results obtained show a break located at the Cepheids’ period of about 3 days, which was not reported before. This phenomenon is most likely explained by the depopulation of second and third crossing classical Cepheids in the faint part of the IS, since blue loops of evolutionary tracks in this mass range do not extend blueward enough to cross the IS at the LMC metallicity. Furthermore, our empirical borders show good agreement with theoretical ones published in the literature. This proves that our empirical IS is a useful tool to put constraints on theoretical models.

The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) makes up roughly the inner 500 pc of the Milky Way and has a large amount of dense hot gas, strong magnetic fields, and highly energetic particles. The Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center (SWAG) is a major imaging line survey using the Australia Telescope Compact Array with the goal to map out the molecular content in the entire CMZ. SWAG data includes the 22 GHz H2O maser transition which is typically used as a tracer for phases of star formation, including both young stellar objects (YSOs) and evolved stars, such as asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The SWAG H2O survey is significantly deeper with better resolution than existing surveys that cover the entire CMZ. The goal is to create a robust catalog of the maser positions, spectral properties, and the sources they trace. The H2O maser catalog shows 703 H2O masers which increases the amount of detected H2O masers in the CMZ by more than an order of magnitude. The H2O masers have a more symmetric distribution in the Galactic center than that of the gas. Cross-correlation with other observations and catalogs will provide information relating maser properties to YSOs and AGB stars, for which multiple maser components will provide outflow properties. We will also connect the surrounding molecular gas to the YSO maser velocities.

This work presents the study of multiphase relations of classical Cepheids in the Magellanic Clouds for short periods (log P < 1) and long periods (log P > 1). From the analysis, it has been found that the multiphase relations obtained using the models as well as observations are highly dynamic with pulsational phase. The multiphase relations for short and long periods are found to display contrasting behaviour for both LMC and SMC. It has been observed that the multiphase relations obtained using the models agree better with the observations in the PC plane in most phases in comparison to the PL plane. Multiphase relations obtained using the models display a clear distinction among different convection sets in most phases. Comparison of models and observations in the multiphase plane is one way to test the models with the observations and to constrain the theory of stellar pulsation.

Pulsating variable δ Scuti stars are intermediate-mass stars with masses in the range of 1–3 δ and spectral types between A2 and F2. They can be found at the intersection of the Cepheid instability strip with the main sequence. They can be used as astrophysical laboratories to test theories of stellar evolution and pulsation. In this contribution, we investigate the observed period–colour and amplitude–colour (PCAC) relations at maximum/mean/minimum light of Galactic bulge and Large Magellanic Cloud δ Scuti stars for the first time and test the hydrogen ionization front (HIF)-photosphere interaction theory using the mesa-rsp code. The PCAC relations, as a function of pulsation phase, are crucial probes of the structure of the outer stellar envelope and provide insight into the physics of stellar pulsation and evolution. The observed behaviour of the δ Scuti PCAC relations is consistent with the theory of the interaction between the HIF and the stellar photosphere.

The Variables and Slow Transients Survey (VAST) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) is designed to detect highly variable and transient radio sources on timescales from 5 s to $\sim\!5$ yr. In this paper, we present the survey description, observation strategy and initial results from the VAST Phase I Pilot Survey. This pilot survey consists of $\sim\!162$ h of observations conducted at a central frequency of 888 MHz between 2019 August and 2020 August, with a typical rms sensitivity of $0.24\ \mathrm{mJy\ beam}^{-1}$ and angular resolution of $12-20$ arcseconds. There are 113 fields, each of which was observed for 12 min integration time, with between 5 and 13 repeats, with cadences between 1 day and 8 months. The total area of the pilot survey footprint is 5 131 square degrees, covering six distinct regions of the sky. An initial search of two of these regions, totalling 1 646 square degrees, revealed 28 highly variable and/or transient sources. Seven of these are known pulsars, including the millisecond pulsar J2039–5617. Another seven are stars, four of which have no previously reported radio detection (SCR J0533–4257, LEHPM 2-783, UCAC3 89–412162 and 2MASS J22414436–6119311). Of the remaining 14 sources, two are active galactic nuclei, six are associated with galaxies and the other six have no multi-wavelength counterparts and are yet to be identified.

This contribution is based on the work published by (Pinzón et al. 2021) in which we computed rotation rates for a sample of 79 young stars (∼3 Myr) in a wide range of stellar masses (from T Tauri Stars to Herbig Ae/Be stars) in in the Orion Star Formation Complex (OSFC). We study whether the magnetospheric accretion scenario (MA), valid for young low mass stars, may be applied over a wide range of stellar masses of not. Under the assumption that stellar winds powered by stellar accretion are the main source for the stellar spin down, the hypothesis of an extension of MA toward higher masses seems plausible. A comparison with Ap/Bp stars suggest that HAeBes should suffer a loss of angular momentum by a factor between 12 and 80 during the first 10 Myr in order to match the magnetic Ap/Bp zone in HR diagram.

From November 2019 to April 2020, the prototypical red supergiant Betelgeuse experienced an unexpected and historic dimming. This event was observed worldwide by astrophysicists, and also by the general public with the naked eye. We present here the results of our observing campaign with ESO’s VLT and VLTI in the visible and infrared domains. The observations with VLT/SPHERE-ZIMPOL, VLT/SPHERE-IRDIS, VLTI/GRAVITY and VLTI/MATISSE provide spatially resolved diagnostics of this event. Using PHOENIX atmosphere models and RADMC3D dust radiative transfer simulations, we built a consistent model reproducing the images and the photometry.

We have conducted a near-infrared monitoring campaign at the UK InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT), of the Local Group spiral galaxy M 33 (Triangulum). In this paper, we present the dust and gas mass-loss rates by the pulsating Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars and red supergiants (RSGs) across the stellar disc of M 33.

The Gaia DR2 has dramatically increased the ability to detect faint nearby white dwarfs. The census of the local white dwarf population has recently been extended from 25 pc to 50 pc, effectively increasing the sample by roughly an order of magnitude. Here we examine the completeness of this new sample as a function of variables such as apparent magnitude, distance, proper motion, photometric color index, unresolved components, etc.

The formation of stars constitutes one of the basic problems in astrophysics. Understanding star formation efficiency of molecular clouds (MCs) of a galaxy is necessary for studying the galactic evolution. Present data and theoretical formulations show that the structure and dynamics of the interstellar medium (ISM) are extremely complex. Therefore, there is no simple model that can explain adequately the star formation efficiency of MCs because of its complex nature. The initial mass of the cloud needed for collapse varies based on the environment in which the cloud resides and the strength of its magnetic field, turbulence, as well as the speed of rotation. In this paper, we estimate the star formation efficiency by combining pre-determined models and the critical mass formulated by Kumssa & Tessema (2018).

The search for life in the Universe is a fundamental problem of astrobiology and modern science. The current progress in the detection of terrestrial-type exoplanets has opened a new avenue in the characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres and in the search for biosignatures of life with the upcoming ground-based and space missions. To specify the conditions favourable for the origin, development and sustainment of life as we know it in other worlds, we need to understand the nature of global (astrospheric), and local (atmospheric and surface) environments of exoplanets in the habitable zones (HZs) around G-K-M dwarf stars including our young Sun. Global environment is formed by propagated disturbances from the planet-hosting stars in the form of stellar flares, coronal mass ejections, energetic particles and winds collectively known as astrospheric space weather. Its characterization will help in understanding how an exoplanetary ecosystem interacts with its host star, as well as in the specification of the physical, chemical and biochemical conditions that can create favourable and/or detrimental conditions for planetary climate and habitability along with evolution of planetary internal dynamics over geological timescales. A key linkage of (astro)physical, chemical and geological processes can only be understood in the framework of interdisciplinary studies with the incorporation of progress in heliophysics, astrophysics, planetary and Earth sciences. The assessment of the impacts of host stars on the climate and habitability of terrestrial (exo)planets will significantly expand the current definition of the HZ to the biogenic zone and provide new observational strategies for searching for signatures of life. The major goal of this paper is to describe and discuss the current status and recent progress in this interdisciplinary field in light of presentations and discussions during the NASA Nexus for Exoplanetary System Science funded workshop ‘Exoplanetary Space Weather, Climate and Habitability’ and to provide a new roadmap for the future development of the emerging field of exoplanetary science and astrobiology.
