This paper considers the planar N-body problem with a quasi-homogeneous potential given by

where $ m_k>0 $ are the masses and $C_{jk}= C_{kj}$ are nonzero real constants, and the exponent g being $ p> $1. Generalizing techniques of the classical N-body problem, we first characterize the periodic solutions that form a regular polygon (relative equilibria) with equal masses ($m_k= m$, $k=1, \ldots , N$) and equal constants $C_{jk}= C$, for all $j, k=1, \ldots , N$ (for short, N-gon solutions). Indeed, for $C>0$ we prove that there exists a unique regular N-gon solution for each fixed positive mass m. In contrast, for the case $C <0$, we demonstrate that there can be a maximum of two distinct regular N-gon solutions for a fixed positive mass m. More precisely, there is a range of values for the mass parameter m for which no solutions of the form of an N-gon exist. Furthermore, we examine the linear stability of these solutions, with a particular focus on the special case $ N=3 $, which is fully characterized.

In this paper, we study the stability of the ring solution of the N-body problem in the entire sphere $\mathbb {S}^2$ by using the logarithmic potential proposed in Boatto et al. (2016, Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences 472, 20160020) and Dritschel (2019, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences 377, 20180349), derived through a definition of central force and Hodge decomposition theorem for 1-forms in manifolds. First, we characterize the ring solution and study its spectral stability, obtaining regions (spherical caps) where the ring solution is spectrally stable for $2\leq N\leq 6$, while, for $N\geq 7$, the ring is spectrally unstable. The nonlinear stability is studied by reducing the system to the homographic regular polygonal solutions, obtaining a 2-d.o.f. Hamiltonian system, and therefore some classic results on stability for 2-d.o.f. Hamiltonian systems are applied to prove that the ring solution is unstable at any parallel where it is placed. Additionally, this system can be reduced to 1-d.o.f. by using the angular momentum integral, which enables us to describe the phase portraits and use them to find periodic ring solutions to the full system. Some of those solutions are numerically approximated.

We consider three point positive masses moving on ${{S}^{2}}$ and ${{H}^{2}}$. An Eulerian-relative equilibrium is a relative equilibrium where the three masses are on the same geodesic. In this paper we analyze the spectral stability of these kind of orbits where the mass at the middle is arbitrary and the masses at the ends are equal and located at the same distance from the central mass. For the case of ${{S}^{2}}$, we found a positive measure set in the set of parameters where the relative equilibria are spectrally stable, and we give a complete classification of the spectral stability of these solutions, in the sense that, except on an algebraic curve in the space of parameters, we can determine if the corresponding relative equilibrium is spectrally stable or unstable. On ${{H}^{2}}$, in the elliptic case, we prove that generically all Eulerian-relative equilibria are unstable; in the particular degenerate case when the two equal masses are negligible, we get that the corresponding solutions are spectrally stable. For the hyperbolic case we consider the system where the mass in the middle is negligible; in this case the Eulerian-relative equilibria are unstable.

We review recent results on stability of traveling waves in partly parabolicreaction-diffusion systems with stable or marginally stable equilibria. We explain howattention to what are apparently mathematical technicalities has led to theorems thatallow one to convert spectral calculations, which are used in the sciences and engineeringto study stability of a wave, into detailed, theoretically-based information about thebehavior of perturbations of the wave.

We study the spectral stability of solitary wave solutions to the nonlinear Diracequation in one dimension. We focus on the Dirac equation with cubic nonlinearity, knownas the Soler model in (1+1) dimensions and also as the massive Gross-Neveu model.Presented numerical computations of the spectrum of linearization at a solitary wave showthat the solitary waves are spectrally stable. We corroborate our results by findingexplicit expressions for several of the eigenfunctions. Some of the analytic results holdfor the nonlinear Dirac equation with generic nonlinearity.

We prove the instability of threshold resonances and eigenvalues of the linearized NLSoperator. We compute the asymptotic approximations of the eigenvalues appearing from theendpoint singularities in terms of the perturbations applied to the original NLS equation.Our method involves such techniques as the Birman-Schwinger principle and the Feshbachmap.
