Electrophoretic characterization of nano- and micro-metre scaled bubbles and drops is increasingly important in environmental and health sciences. Despite more than a hundred years of study, the interpretation of bubble electrophoresis data remains an unresolved fundamental problem that bridges fluid mechanics and interfacial science. This paper examines, from a theoretical perspective, how the electrophoretic mobility of small drops and bubbles responds to the interfacial kinetic-exchange rate and interfacial-charge mobility: factors that have been largely overlooked, but which provide new insights on the interpretation of $\zeta$-potentials, which are routinely used to assess surface charge density. A variety of outcomes are demonstrated, each reflecting subtle balances of hydrodynamic and electrical forces, modulated by interfacial thermodynamics and transport. Among the findings is that irreversibly bound charge with low interfacial mobility furnishes rigid-sphere behaviour; whereas interfacial charge with high mobility produces the characteristically high electrophoretic mobilities of non-conducting, uniformly charged fluid spheres. Outcomes are more complex when drops and bubbles have interfacial charge that seeks local equilibrium with the immediately adjacent electrolyte. For example, the present model shows that interfacial-charge mobility regularizes the singular behaviour predicted by theories for fluid spheres bearing high, perfectly uniform surface charge.

A liquid drop impacting a rigid substrate undergoes deformation and spreading due to normal reaction forces, which are counteracted by surface tension. On a non-wetting substrate, the drop subsequently retracts and takes off. Our recent work (Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 129, 2022, 104501) revealed two peaks in the temporal evolution of the normal force $F(t)$ – one at impact and another at jump-off. The second peak coincides with a Worthington jet formation, which vanishes at high viscosities due to increased viscous dissipation affecting flow focusing. In this article, using experiments, direct numerical simulations and scaling arguments, we characterize both the peak amplitude $F_1$ at impact and the one at takeoff ($F_2$) and elucidate their dependency on the control parameters: the Weber number $We$ (dimensionless impact kinetic energy) and the Ohnesorge number $Oh$ (dimensionless viscosity). The first peak amplitude $F_1$ and the time $t_1$ to reach it depend on inertial time scales for low viscosity liquids, remaining nearly constant for viscosities up to 100 times that of water. For high viscosity liquids, we balance the rate of change in kinetic energy with viscous dissipation to obtain new scaling laws: $F_1/F_\rho \sim \sqrt {Oh}$ and $t_1/\tau _\rho \sim 1/\sqrt {Oh}$, where $F_\rho$ and $\tau _\rho$ are the inertial force and time scales, respectively, which are consistent with our data. The time $t_2$ at which the amplitude $F_2$ appears is set by the inertiocapillary time scale $\tau _\gamma$, independent of both the viscosity and the impact velocity of the drop. However, these properties dictate the magnitude of this amplitude.

Impact dynamics have long fascinated due to their ubiquity in everyday phenomena, from rain droplets splashing on windscreens to stone-skimming on the surface of the ocean. Impacts are characterized by rapid changes over disparate length scales, which make them expensive or sensitive to capture experimentally and computationally. Here, reduced mathematical models come to the fore, offering a way to get significant physical insight at reduced cost. In this volume, Phillips & Milewski (J. Fluid Mech., 2024) develop a mathematical model allowing for air–water interactions in the low-impact speed regime, in which an impactor bounces or rebounds rather than splashes. Their model offers a reliable way to capture air effects in bouncing, with a range of potential applications including hydrodynamic-quantum analogues and biomimetic water walkers.

We investigate the spreading of falling ambient-temperature Newtonian drops after their normal impact on a quartz plate covered with a thin layer of liquid nitrogen. As a drop expands, liquid nitrogen evaporates, generating a vapour film that maintains the drop in levitation. Consequently, the latter spreads in inverse Leidenfrost conditions. Three drop-spreading regimes are observed: (i) inertio-capillary, (ii) inertio-viscous, and (iii) inertio-viscous-capillary. In the first regime, although the drop expansion is essentially driven by a competition between inertial and capillary stresses, it is also affected by viscous effects emerging from the vapour film, which ultimately favours the development of a shear flow within the drop. Interestingly, vapour film effects become marginal in both the second and third regimes, allowing the drop to undergo biaxial extension primarily. More specifically, in the inertio-viscous scenario, the expansion is driven by the balance between inertial and biaxial extensional viscous stresses in the drop. Finally, inertia, capillarity and drop viscosity are all relevant in the third regime. These physical mechanisms are underlined through a mixed approach combining experiments with multiphase three-dimensional numerical simulations in light of spreading dynamics analyses, energy transfer and scaling laws. Our results are rationalized in a two-dimensional diagram linking the drops’ maximum expansion and spreading time with the observed spreading regimes through a single dimensionless parameter given by the square root of the capillary number (the ratio of the viscous stress to the capillary stress).

Splashes from impacts of drops on liquid pools are ubiquitous and generate secondary droplets important for a range of applications in healthcare, agriculture and industry. The physics of splash continues to comprise central unresolved questions. Combining experiments and theory, here we study the sequence of topological changes from drop impact on a deep, inviscid liquid pool, with a focus on the regime of crown splash with developing air cavity below the interface and crown sheet above it. We develop coupled evolution equations for the cavity–crown system, leveraging asymptotic theory for the cavity and conservation laws for the crown. Using the key coupling of sheet and cavity, we derive similarity solutions for the sheet velocity and thickness profiles, and asymptotic prediction of the crown height evolution. Unlike the cavity whose expansion is opposed by gravitational effects, the axial crown rise is mostly opposed by surface tension effects. Moreover, both the maximum crown height and the time of its occurrence scale as ${\textit {We}}^{5/7}$. We find our analytical results to be in good agreement with our experimental measurements. The cavity–crown coupling achieved enables us to obtain explicit estimates of the crown splash spatio-temporal unsteady dynamics, paving the way to deciphering ultimate splash fragmentation.

In this paper, we simulate the process of two-dimensional axisymmetric fluid–structure coupling of a droplet impacting on a flexible disk. The effects of dimensionless disk stiffness (K = 0.1–1000), Weber number (We = 1–500) and contact angle (θ = 130° and 60°) on the dynamics of the droplet impacting on the flexible disk are analysed. The results indicate that there are five typical impact modes for a hydrophobic surface (θ = 130°) and four typical impact modes for a hydrophilic surface (θ = 60°) within the range of considered parameters. The analysis of spreading factor reveals that a part of the energy is transferred to the substrate, which is manifested as a weakening of the droplet spreading, when the substrate deforms downwards due to the droplet impact; the squeezing of the droplet causes a tendency to flow from the centre of the droplet to the edge, which is manifested as an enhancement of the droplet spreading, when the substrate recovers from the downward deformation. The effect of the substrate flexibility on the maximum spreading factor depends on the competition of the two mechanisms above. Based on this, a modified scaling law of βmax has been proposed by introducing the effective Weber number (Wem). The analysis of impact force demonstrates that the peak of the impact force is related to the deflection of the flexible substrate which is different from that of a rigid wall; and three typical processes of impact force variation have been summarised. In addition, unlike the rigid substrate scenario, there is an energy interaction between the droplet and the flexible substrate after impact occurs, which is classified as three typical energy transformation processes.

This study reveals the morphological evolution of a splashing drop by a newly proposed feature extraction method, and a subsequent interpretation of the classification of splashing and non-splashing drops performed by an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) video classifier. Notably, the values of the weight matrix elements of the XAI that correspond to the extracted features are found to change with the temporal evolution of the drop morphology. We compute the rate of change of the contributions of each frame with respect to the classification value of a video as an importance index to quantify the contributions of the extracted features at different impact times to the classification. Remarkably, the rate computed for the extracted splashing features of ethanol and 1 cSt silicone oil is found to have a peak value at the early impact times, while the extracted features of 5 cSt silicone oil are more obvious at a later time when the lamella is more developed. This study provides an example that clarifies the complex morphological evolution of a splashing drop by interpreting the XAI.

We study the first contact of an emulsion drop impacting on a smooth solid surface. The lubricating air layer causes rapid deceleration of the bottom tip of the drop as it approaches first contact, causing a dimple in the drop surface. When the dispersed emulsion droplets are of higher density than the drop's continuous phase, the rapid deceleration (${\sim }10^5$ m s$^{-2}$) induces the formation of narrow spikes extruding out of the free surface. These spikes form when the impact Weber number exceeds a critical value ${\simeq }10$. Time-resolved interferometric imaging, at rates up to 7 million frames per second, shows the emergence and shape of these spikes leading to the local contacts with the solid. We characterize the tip curvature and capillary pressure affecting their dynamics as they emerge and can touch the substrate before the main outer ring of contact.

Gas-encapsulated drops, much like antibubbles, are drops enclosed in a bubble within a liquid. They show potential as payload carriers in fluid transport and mixing techniques where sound waves can be leveraged to induce the collapse of the gas core and the subsequent release of the drop. Here, the interaction of millimetre-sized gas-encapsulated drops with impulsive laser-induced shock waves is investigated to gain fundamental insights into the release process. Experimental synchrotron X-ray phase contrast imaging, which allows the drop dynamics to be visualised inside the encapsulating bubble, is complemented by numerical simulations to study the intricate physics at play. Three drop dynamical release regimes are discovered, namely the drop impact, partial deposition and jet impact regimes. The regime type is mainly dependent on the shape of the bubble interface impacting the drop and the associated Weber and Reynolds numbers. The drop dynamics of the drop impact and partial deposition regimes show similarities with the canonical configuration of drops impacting flat liquid surfaces, whereas the jet impact regime resembles binary drop collisions, which allows existing scaling laws to be applied to describe the underlying processes. The release of the drop is investigated numerically. The time evolution of the drop dissemination within the surrounding liquid discloses enhanced mixing for dynamics involving high Weber and Reynolds numbers such as the drop impact and jet impact regimes.

We investigate the effect of high wind speeds on the breakup mechanisms that govern the formation of a spray from nozzles that form liquid sheets, which subsequently break up. The fragmentation mechanism of liquid sheets from spray nozzles has recently been described in detail under quiescent conditions. With high wind speeds, measurements of the droplet size distribution reveal two rather than one characteristic drop sizes, suggesting the existence of two distinct breakup mechanisms. High-speed images of the spray are used to identify these two mechanisms. We show that the smaller droplets result from the breakup of ‘bags’ formed in the spray sheet by the wind, while the larger droplets result from the breakup of the remaining perforated sheet. Based on the two mechanisms, a probability density function is constructed and fitted to the measured droplet size distributions. We show that the spray sheet destabilises due to the Rayleigh–Taylor instability induced by the airflow, and that the experimentally observable breakup length and size of the holes blown in the sheet are predicted by the fastest growing wavenumber. From this, a theoretical prediction for the droplet size from bag breakup and remaining sheet breakup is derived.

We study numerically the flow around a spherical droplet set fixed in a linear shear flow with moderate shear rates ($Sr\leq 0.5$, $Sr$ being the ratio between the velocity difference across the drop and the relative velocity) over a wide range of external Reynolds numbers ($0.1<{{Re}}\leq 250$, ${{Re}}$ based on the slip velocity and the viscosity of the external fluid) and drop-to-fluid viscosity ratios ($0.01\leq \mu ^\ast \leq 100$). The flow structure, the vorticity field and their intrinsic connection with the lift force are analysed. Specifically, the results on lift force are compared with the low-${{Re}}$ solution derived for droplets of arbitrary $\mu ^\ast$, as well as prior data at finite ${{Re}}$ available in both the clean-bubble limit ($\mu ^\ast \to 0$) and the solid-sphere limit ($\mu ^\ast \to \infty$). Notably, at ${{Re}}=O(100)$, the lift force exhibits a non-monotonic transition from $\mu ^\ast \to 0$ to $\mu ^\ast \to \infty$, peaking at $\mu ^\ast \approx 1$. This behaviour is related to an internal three-dimensional flow bifurcation also occurring under uniform-flow conditions, which makes the flow to evolve from axisymmetric to biplanar symmetric. This flow bifurcation occurs at low-but-finite $\mu ^\ast$ when the internal Reynolds number (${{Re}}^i$, based on the viscosity of the internal fluid) exceeds approximately 300. In the presence of shear, the corresponding imperfect bifurcation enhances the extensional rate of the flow in the wake. Consequently, the streamwise vortices generated behind the droplet can be more intense compared with those behind a clean bubble. Given the close relation between the lift and these vortices, a droplet with ${{Re}}=O(100)$ and $\mu ^\ast \approx 1$ typically experiences a greater lift force than that in the inviscid limit.

Extensive three-dimensional boundary-integral simulations are presented for the steady-state, low-Reynolds-number motion of a non-wetting deformable drop in another liquid on an inclined solid wall. The drop remains separated from the wall by a lubricating film. The boundary-integral formulation is based on the half-space Green function. The focus is on the challenging case of small tilt angles $\theta$ combined with high drop-to-medium viscosity ratios $\lambda$, when the drop travels with strong hydrodynamical interaction very close to the wall. Simulations to steady state have required ultrahigh drop surface resolutions (to $3\times 10^5$ boundary elements) achieved through multipole acceleration and combined with novel regularization to fully eliminate near-singular behaviour of the double-layer integrals due to small clearance. Non-dimensional drop speed $U$ is presented for $\theta \geq 7.5^\circ$, $\lambda \leq 300$ and in a broad range of Bond numbers $B$, covering from nearly spherical to strongly pancaked drops. The results are consistent with published experiments on liquid–liquid systems. At small $\theta$ and $\lambda \gg 1$, $U$ is a strong, decreasing function of $B$; the asymptotic regime $U\to 0$ at $B\to 0$ is not observed in the simulated range. For small $B$, the dimpled thin-film geometry is insensitive to $\lambda =1\unicode{x2013}300$. For pancaked drops, the lubrication film is much thicker for $\lambda =1$ than for $\lambda \gg 1$ drops. Approximate thin-film uniformity in the drop motion direction is confirmed for pancaked, but not for $B\ll 1$, drops. Kinematics of drop motion shows that neither perfect tank treading, nor perfect rolling can be approached for liquid–liquid systems in the purely hydrodynamical formulation. The methodology is applicable to other problems and can allow for direct inclusion of short-range colloidal forces in three-dimensional boundary-integral simulations.

We present herein the derivation of a lubrication-mediated (LM) quasi-potential model for droplet rebounds off deep liquid baths, assuming the presence of a persistent dynamic air layer which acts as a lubricating pressure transfer. We then present numerical simulations of the LM model for axisymmetric rebounds of solid spheres and compare quantitatively to current results in the literature, including experimental data in the low-speed impact regime. In this regime the LM model has the advantage of being far more computationally tractable than direct numerical simulation (DNS) and is also able to provide detailed behaviour within the micro-metric thin lubrication region. The LM system has an interesting mathematical structure, with the lubrication layer providing a free-boundary elliptic problem mediating the drop and bath free-boundary evolutionary equations.

Aerodynamic breakup of vaporizing drops is commonly seen in many spray applications. While it is well known that vaporization can modulate interfacial instabilities, the impact of vaporization on drop aerobreakup is poorly understood. Detailed interface-resolved simulations were performed to systematically study the effect of vaporization, characterized by the Stefan number, on the drop breakup and acceleration for different Weber numbers and density ratios. It is observed that the resulting asymmetric vaporization rates and strengths of Stefan flow on the windward and leeward sides of the drop hinder bag development and prevent drop breakup. The critical Weber number thus generally increases with the Stefan number. The modulation of the boundary layer also contributes to a significant increase of drag coefficient. Numerical experiments were performed to affirm that the drop volume reduction plays a negligible role and the Stefan flow is the dominant reason for the breakup suppression and drag enhancement observed.

In spray cleaning, a multitude of small drops, violently accelerated by a high-speed gas stream, strike a dirty surface. This process is extremely effective: very little dirt can resist it. This is true even for dirt particles whose characteristic size is less than 100 nm. Spray cleaning is classically modelled by balancing particle adhesion with either inertial stress or viscous shear near the surface, the latter being calculated using droplet size and velocity as the characteristic length and velocity. This results in dimensionless numbers that are often well below one, suggesting that the mechanical stress exerted on the surface by the drop impact that detaches the particle is not well captured. Using quantitative nanoscale measurements, we show that the remarkable efficiency of spray cleaning results from the forced spreading of each droplet on the surface, which generates an unsteady and inhomogeneous shear confined to a boundary layer entrained in the wake of the liquid–solid contact line. In the very first moments of impact, the boundary layer is extremely thin, yielding a gigantic stress: the contact line of the spreading droplets sweeps all the surface particles away. We propose a quantitative model of spray cleaning based on this unsteady surface stress, which agrees well with (i) experimental data obtained with spray droplets of $34\ \mathrm {\mu }$m mean radius impacting the surface to be cleaned at a mean velocity ranging between 30 and 70 m s$^{-1}$ and contamination by nanoparticles of varying nature and shape and (ii) data in the literature on spray cleaning.

Droplet impingement on a heated substrate is the fundamental process underlying various technologies, ranging from spray cooling to inkjet printing. Understanding the coupled effects of fluid dynamics and heat transfer patterns during droplet jumping, boiling and evaporation, which determine the outcomes of the impingement process, is essential. Here, we developed two-colour planar laser-induced fluorescence and micro-particle image velocimetry technologies to measure quantitatively the velocity and temperature distributions inside the droplet during an impingement process with high temporal and spatial resolution. With our novel measuring system, the hot spots at the solid–liquid interface are discovered for the first time. The influence of contact boiling on the droplet internal mixing, which impedes droplet recoiling and reduces the rebounding velocity, is discussed. A significant enhancement in heat absorption for partially rebounding droplets is discovered, where the impingement heat transfer rate is doubled compared to other vapour-layer-covered droplets. The scaling correlations of viscous dissipation rate and contact time of rebounding droplets, as well as the time variation of droplet temperature rise, are proposed. More detailed patterns inside droplets can be captured by these experimental methods, which will help to reveal more intrinsic mechanisms lying in thermally induced flow, complex fluids and droplet-impacting-based technologies.

The nanoscale is the new frontier of fluid dynamics and its phenomenology can echo at the macroscale as in the canonical example of drop impact on a planar substrate. Unprecedented advances in measurement technology have recently equipped fluid dynamicists with the ability to probe nanoscale effects. The paper by Li et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 785, 2015, R2) uses ultrafast imaging at the hundreds of nanoseconds scale to resolve the first contact between the drop and the substrate and thereby reveal the effect of prescribed nano-roughness on contact line motion.

We report the dynamics of a droplet levitated in a multi-emitter, single-axis acoustic levitator. The deformation and atomisation behaviour of the droplet in the acoustic field displays myriad complex phenomena, in a series of events. These include the primary breakup of the droplet, wherein it exhibits stable levitation, deformation, sheet formation and equatorial atomisation, followed by its secondary breakup, which could be of various types such as umbrella, bag, bubble or multi-stage breakup. A large number of tiny atomised droplets, formed as a result of the primary and secondary breakup, can remain levitated in the acoustic levitator and exhibit aggregation and coalescence. The visualisation of the interfacial instabilities on the surface of the liquid sheet using both side- and top-view imaging is presented. An approximate size distribution of the atomised droplets is also provided. The stable levitation of the droplet is due to a balance of acoustic and gravitational forces while the resulting ellipsoidal shape of the droplet is a consequence of the balance of the deforming acoustic force and the restoring capillary force. Stronger acoustic forces can no longer be balanced by capillary forces, resulting in a highly flattened droplet, with a thin liquid sheet at the edge (equatorial region). The thinning of the sheet is caused by the differential acceleration induced by the increasing pressure difference between the poles and the equator as the sheet deforms. When the sheet thickness reduces to of the order of a few microns, Faraday waves develop at the thinnest region (preceding the rim), which causes the generation of tiny-sized droplets that are ejected perpendicular to the sheet. The corresponding hole formation results in a perforated sheet that causes the detachment of the annular rim, which breaks due to Rayleigh–Plateau (RP) instability. The radial ligaments generated in the sheet, possibly due to Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability, break into droplets of different sizes. The secondary breakup exhibits Weber number dependency and includes umbrella, bag, bubble or multi-stage types, ultimately resulting in the complete atomisation of the droplets. Both the primary and the secondary breakup of the droplet involve interfacial instabilities such as Faraday, Kelvin–Helmholtz, RT and RP and are well supported by visual evidence.

This study comprehensively investigates the response of a combusting droplet during its interaction with a high-speed transient flow imposed by a coaxially propagating blast wave. The blast wave is generated using a specially designed miniature shock generator that produces blast waves using the wire-explosion technique, facilitating a wide range of Mach numbers (1.03 < Ms < 1.8). The experiments are performed in two configurations: open field and focused blast wave. The charging voltage and the configuration determine the Mach number (Ms) and flow characteristics. The flame is found to exhibit two major response patterns: partial extinction followed by reignition and full extinction. Increasing the Mach number (Ms > 1.1) makes the droplet flame more vulnerable to extinction. Additionally, the flame exhibits stretching and shedding, followed by reignition at lower Mach numbers (Ms < 1.06). In all cases, the flame base lifts off in response to the imposed flow, and the advection of the flame base interacting with the flame tip results in flame extinction. The entire interaction occurs in two stages: (i) interaction with the blast wave and the decaying velocity profile associated with it, and (ii) interaction with the induced flow behind the blast wave as a result of the entrainment (delayed response). Alongside the flame's response, the droplet also interacts with the flow imposed by the blast wave, exhibiting different response modes including pure deformation, Rayleigh–Taylor piercing bag breakup and shear-induced stripping.

The internal flow within an evaporating sessile droplet has intriguing fluid mechanics important to various microfluidics applications. In the present study, a phenomenon is observed through numerical methods wherein the buoyancy-driven flow structure inside a droplet on a non-wetting substrate transitions from an axisymmetric toroidal vortex flow to a non-axisymmetric single vortex flow with increase in the substrate temperature. As the axisymmetric nature of the droplet flow field and evaporation characteristics are broken, the internal velocity accelerates significantly. The transition, which is attributed to a flow instability inside the droplet, is more prone to occur as the droplet volume or the contact angle increases. The onset of the flow transition is analysed as the amplification of a small perturbation, thereby establishing a correlation between the flow instability and the Rayleigh number (Ra). Specifically, when Ra exceeds some critical value, the onset of the flow transition is observed, which explains the effects of substrate temperature and droplet volume on the internal flow. Next, the influence of the droplet contact angle on the critical Ra was investigated, and the underlying reasons were analysed. Finally, we discuss the heat transfer efficiency within the droplet and analyse why the internal flow tends to transition to a non-axisymmetric flow pattern from an energy minimization perspective.
