In this paper, we study under what boundary conditions the inequality

In this paper, we will use optimal mass transport combining with suitable transforms to study the sharp constants and optimizers for a class of the Gagliardo–Nirenberg and Caffarelli–Kohn–Nirenberg inequalities. Moreover, we will investigate these inequalities with and without the monomial weights $x_{1}^{A_{1}} \cdots x_{N}^{A_{N}}$ on ℝN.

For bounded domains Ω, we prove that the Lp-norm of a regular function with compact support is controlled by weighted Lp-norms of its gradient, where the weight belongs to a class of symmetric non-negative definite matrix-valued functions. The class of weights is defined by regularity assumptions and structural conditions on the degeneracy set, where the determinant vanishes. In particular, the weight A is assumed to have rank at least 1 when restricted to the normal bundle of the degeneracy set S. This generalization of the classical Poincaré inequality is then applied to develop a robust theory of first-order Lp-based Sobolev spaces with matrix-valued weight A. The Poincaré inequality and these Sobolev spaces are then applied to produce various results on existence, uniqueness and qualitative properties of weak solutions to boundary-value problems for degenerate elliptic, degenerate parabolic and degenerate hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) of second order written in divergence form, where A is calibrated to the matrix of coefficients of the second-order spatial derivatives. The notion of weak solution is variational: the spatial states belong to the matrix-weighted Sobolev spaces with p = 2. For the degenerate elliptic PDEs, the Dirichlet problem is treated by the use of the Poincaré inequality and Lax–Milgram theorem, while the treatment of the Cauchy–Dirichlet problem for the degenerate evolution equations relies only on the Poincaré inequality and the parabolic and hyperbolic counterparts of the Lax–Milgram theorem.

We study some Hardy-type inequalities involving a general norm in ℝn and an anisotropic distance function to the boundary. The case of the optimality of the constants is also addressed.

An iteration technique for characterizing boundedness of certain types of multilinear operators is presented, reducing the problem to a corresponding linear-operator case. The method gives a simple proof of a characterization of validity of the weighted bilinear Hardy inequality

for all non-negative f, g on (a, b), for 1 < p 1, p 2, q < ∞. More equivalent characterizing conditions are presented.

The same technique is applied to various further problems, in particular those involving multilinear integral operators of Hardy type.

We characterize, in the context of rearrangement invariant spaces, the optimal range space for a class of monotone operators related to the Hardy operator. The connection between the optimal range and the optimal domain for these operators is carefully analysed.

In this paper, we establish various inequalities for some differentiable mappings that are linked with the illustrious Hermite–Hadamard integral inequality for mappings whose derivatives are $s$-$(\alpha , m)$-convex. The generalised integral inequalities contribute better estimates than some already presented. The inequalities are then applied to numerical integration and some special means.

We find new properties for the space R(X), introduced by Soria in the study of the best constant for the Hardy operator minus the identity. In particular, we characterize when R(X) coincides with the minimal Lorentz space Λ(X). The condition that R(X) ≠ {0} is also described in terms of the embedding (L1, ∞ ∩ L∞) ⊂ X. Finally, we also show the existence of a minimal rearrangement-invariant Banach function space (RIBFS) X among those for which R(X) ≠ {0} (which is the RIBFS envelope of the quasi-Banach space L1, ∞ ∩ L∞).

By applying Wei, Li and Wu's notion (given in ‘Generalizations of the uniformization theorem and Bochner's method in p-harmonic geometry’, Comm. Math. Anal. Conf., vol. 01, 2008, pp. 46–68) and method (given in ‘Sharp estimates on -harmonic functions with applications in biharmonic maps, preprint) and by modifying the proof of a general inequality given by Chen in ‘On isometric minimal immersion from warped products into space forms’ (Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc., vol. 45, 2002, pp. 579–587), we establish some simple relations between geometric estimates (the mean curvature of an isometric immersion of a warped product and sectional curvatures of an ambient m-manifold bounded from above by a non-positive number c) and analytic estimates (the growth of the warping function). We find a dichotomy between constancy and ‘infinity’ of the warping functions on complete non-compact Riemannian manifolds for an appropriate isometric immersion. Several applications of our growth estimates are also presented. In particular, we prove that if f is an Lq function on a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold N1 for some q > 1, then for any Riemannian manifold N2 the warped product N1 ×fN2 does not admit a minimal immersion into any non-positively curved Riemannian manifold. We also show that both the geometric curvature estimates and the analytic function growth estimates in this paper are sharp.

In this paper we state and prove a new general Hilbert-type inequality in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with $k\geq2$ non-conjugate exponents. Using Selberg's integral formula, this result is then applied to obtain explicit upper bounds for the doubly weighted Hardy–Littlewood–Sobolev inequality and some further Hilbert-type inequalities for $k$ non-negative functions and non-conjugate exponents.
