The Baire algebra of a topological space X is the quotient of the algebra of all subsets of X modulo the meager sets. We show that this Boolean algebra can be endowed with a natural closure operator, resulting in a closure algebra which we denote $\mathbf {Baire}(X)$. We identify the modal logic of such algebras to be the well-known system $\mathsf {S5}$, and prove soundness and strong completeness for the cases where X is crowded and either completely metrizable and continuum-sized or locally compact Hausdorff. We also show that every extension of $\mathsf {S5}$ is the modal logic of a subalgebra of $\mathbf {Baire}(X)$, and that soundness and strong completeness also holds in the language with the universal modality.

We study the complexities of isometry and isomorphism classes of separable Banach spaces in the Polish spaces of Banach spaces, recently introduced and investigated by the authors in [14]. We obtain sharp results concerning the most classical separable Banach spaces.

We prove that the infinite-dimensional separable Hilbert space is characterized as the unique separable infinite-dimensional Banach space whose isometry class is closed, and also as the unique separable infinite-dimensional Banach space whose isomorphism class is $F_\sigma $. For $p\in \left [1,2\right )\cup \left (2,\infty \right )$, we show that the isometry classes of $L_p[0,1]$ and $\ell _p$ are $G_\delta $-complete sets and $F_{\sigma \delta }$-complete sets, respectively. Then we show that the isometry class of $c_0$ is an $F_{\sigma \delta }$-complete set.

Additionally, we compute the complexities of many other natural classes of separable Banach spaces; for instance, the class of separable $\mathcal {L}_{p,\lambda +}$-spaces, for $p,\lambda \geq 1$, is shown to be a $G_\delta $-set, the class of superreflexive spaces is shown to be an $F_{\sigma \delta }$-set, and the class of spaces with local $\Pi $-basis structure is shown to be a $\boldsymbol {\Sigma }^0_6$-set. The paper is concluded with many open problems and suggestions for a future research.

We present and thoroughly study natural Polish spaces of separable Banach spaces. These spaces are defined as spaces of norms, respectively pseudonorms, on the countable infinite-dimensional rational vector space. We provide an exhaustive comparison of these spaces with admissible topologies recently introduced by Godefroy and Saint-Raymond and show that Borel complexities differ little with respect to these two topological approaches.

We investigate generic properties in these spaces and compare them with those in admissible topologies, confirming the suspicion of Godefroy and Saint-Raymond that they depend on the choice of the admissible topology.

We study a strengthening of the notion of a perfectly meager set. We say that a subset A of a perfect Polish space X is countably perfectly meager in X, if for every sequence of perfect subsets $\{P_n: n \in \mathbb N\}$ of X, there exists an $F_\sigma $ -set F in X such that $A \subseteq F$ and $F\cap P_n$ is meager in $P_n$ for each n. We give various characterizations and examples of countably perfectly meager sets. We prove that not every universally meager set is countably perfectly meager correcting an earlier result of Bartoszyński.

Consider a definably complete uniformly locally o-minimal expansion of the second kind of a densely linearly ordered abelian group. Let $f:X \rightarrow R^n$ be a definable map, where X is a definable set and R is the universe of the structure. We demonstrate the inequality $\dim (f(X)) \leq \dim (X)$ in this paper. As a corollary, we get that the set of the points at which f is discontinuous is of dimension smaller than $\dim (X)$. We also show that the structure is definably Baire in the course of the proof of the inequality.

We establish that the existence of a winning strategy in certain topological games, closely related to a strong game of Choquet, played in a topological space $X$ and its hyperspace $K(X)$ of all nonempty compact subsets of $X$ equipped with the Vietoris topology, is equivalent for one of the players. For a separable metrizable space $X$, we identify a game-theoretic condition equivalent to $K(X)$ being hereditarily Baire. It implies quite easily a recent result of Gartside, Medini and Zdomskyy that characterizes hereditary Baire property of hyperspaces $K(X)$ over separable metrizable spaces $X$ via the Menger property of the remainder of a compactification of $X$. Subsequently, we use topological games to study hereditary Baire property in spaces of probability measures and in hyperspaces over filters on natural numbers. To this end, we introduce a notion of strong $P$-filter ${\mathcal{F}}$ and prove that it is equivalent to $K({\mathcal{F}})$ being hereditarily Baire. We also show that if $X$ is separable metrizable and $K(X)$ is hereditarily Baire, then the space $P_{r}(X)$ of Borel probability Radon measures on $X$ is hereditarily Baire too. It follows that there exists (in ZFC) a separable metrizable space $X$, which is not completely metrizable with $P_{r}(X)$ hereditarily Baire. As far as we know, this is the first example of this kind.

We construct a separately continuous function $e:E\times K\rightarrow \{0,1\}$ on the product of a Baire space $E$ and a compact space $K$ such that no restriction of $e$ to any non-meagre Borel set in $E\times K$ is continuous. The function $e$ has no points of joint continuity, and, hence, it provides a negative solution of Talagrand’s problem in Talagrand [Espaces de Baire et espaces de Namioka, Math. Ann.270 (1985), 159–164].

We study topological properties of the escaping endpoints and fast escaping endpoints of the Julia set of complex exponential $\exp (z)+a$ when $a\in (-\infty ,-1)$. We show neither space is homeomorphic to the whole set of endpoints. This follows from a general result stating that for every transcendental entire function $f$, the escaping Julia set $I(f)\cap J(f)$ is first category.

We study sets of measure-preserving transformations on Lebesgue spaces with continuous measures taking into account extreme scales of variations of weak mixing. It is shown that the generic dynamical behaviour depends on subsequences of time going to infinity. We also present corresponding generic sets of (probability) invariant measures with respect to topological shifts over finite alphabets and Axiom A diffeomorphisms over topologically mixing basic sets.

A set is shy or Haar null (in the sense of Christensen) if there exists a Borel set and a Borel probability measure μ on C[0, 1] such that and for all f ∈ C[0, 1]. The complement of a shy set is called a prevalent set. We say that a set is Haar ambivalent if it is neither shy nor prevalent.

The main goal of the paper is to answer the following question: what can we say about the topological properties of the level sets of the prevalent/non-shy many f ∈ C[0, 1]?

The classical Bruckner–Garg theorem characterizes the level sets of the generic (in the sense of Baire category) f ∈ C[0, 1] from the topological point of view. We prove that the functions f ∈ C[0, 1] for which the same characterization holds form a Haar ambivalent set.

In an earlier paper, Balka et al. proved that the functions f ∈ C[0, 1] for which positively many level sets with respect to the Lebesgue measure λ are singletons form a non-shy set in C[0, 1]. The above result yields that this set is actually Haar ambivalent. Now we prove that the functions f ∈ C[0, 1] for which positively many level sets with respect to the occupation measure λ ◦ f –1 are not perfect form a Haar ambivalent set in C[0, 1].

We show that for the prevalent f ∈ C[0, 1] for the generic y ∈ f([0, 1]) the level set f –1(y) is perfect. Finally, we answer a question of Darji and White by showing that the set of functions f ∈ C[0, 1] for which there exists a perfect set Pf ⊂ [0, 1] such that fʹ(x) = ∞ for all x ∈ Pf is Haar ambivalent.

We show that for a coanalytic subspace $X$ of ${{2}^{\omega }}$, the countable dense homogeneity of ${{X}^{\omega }}$ is equivalent to $X$ being Polish. This strengthens a result of Hrušák and Zamora Avilés. Then, inspired by results of Hernández-Gutiérrez, Hrušák, and van Mill, using a technique of Medvedev, we construct a non-Polish subspace $X$ of ${{2}^{\omega }}$ such that ${{X}^{\omega }}$ is countable dense homogeneous. This gives the first $\text{ZFC}$ answer to a question of Hrušák and Zamora Avilés. Furthermore, since our example is consistently analytic, the equivalence result mentioned above is sharp. Our results also answer a question of Medini and Milovich. Finally, we show that if every countable subset of a zero-dimensional separable metrizable space $X$ is included in a Polish subspace of $X$, then ${{X}^{\omega }}$ is countable dense homogeneous.

We study the hyperspace dynamics induced fromgeneric continuous maps and fromgeneric homeomorphisms of the Cantor space, with emphasis on the notions of Li– Yorke chaos, distributional chaos, topological entropy, chain continuity, shadowing, and recurrence.

Given an integer $n\,\ge \,3$, a metrizable compact topological $n$-manifold $X$ with boundary, and a finite positive Borel measure $\mu$ on $X$, we prove that for the typical homeomorphism $f:\,X\,\to \,X$, it is true that for $\mu$-almost every point $x$ in $X$ the restriction of $f$ (respectively of ${{f}^{-1}}$) to the omega limit set $\omega \left( f,\,x \right)$ (respectively to the alpha limit set $\alpha \left( f,\,x \right)$) is topologically conjugate to the universal odometer.

Let $G$ be a locally compact group. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is a nondiscrete locally compact group, $p\in (0, 1)$ and $q\in (0, + \infty ] $, then $\{ (f, g)\in {L}^{p} (G)\times {L}^{q} (G): f\ast g\text{ is finite } \lambda \text{-a.e.} \} $ is a set of first category in ${L}^{p} (G)\times {L}^{q} (G)$. We also show that if $G$ is a nondiscrete locally compact group and $p, q, r\in [1, + \infty ] $ such that $1/ p+ 1/ q\gt 1+ 1/ r$, then $\{ (f, g)\in {L}^{p} (G)\times {L}^{q} (G): f\ast g\in {L}^{r} (G)\} $, is a set of first category in ${L}^{p} (G)\times {L}^{q} (G)$. Consequently, for $p, q\in [1+ \infty )$ and $r\in [1, + \infty ] $ with $1/ p+ 1/ q\gt 1+ 1/ r$, $G$ is discrete if and only if ${L}^{p} (G)\ast {L}^{q} (G)\subseteq {L}^{r} (G)$; this answers a question raised by Saeki [‘The ${L}^{p} $-conjecture and Young’s inequality’, Illinois J. Math. 34 (1990), 615–627].

Given an integer $n\,\ge \,3$, a metrizable compact topological $n$-manifold $X$ with boundary, and a finite positive Borel measure $\mu $ on $X$, we prove that for the typical homeomorphism $f\,:\,X\,\to \,X$, it is true that for $\mu $-almost every point $x$ in $X$ the limit set $\omega (f,\,x)$ is a Cantor set of Hausdorff dimension zero, each point of $\omega (f,\,x)$ has a dense orbit in $\omega (f,\,x)$, $f$ is non-sensitive at each point of $\omega (f,\,x)$, and the function $a\,\to \,\omega (f,\,a)$ is continuous at $x$.

In this paper we study domains, Scott domains, and the existence of measurements. We use a space created by D. K. Burke to show that there is a Scott domain $P$ for which $\max (P)$ is a ${{G}_{\delta }}$-subset of $P$ and yet no measurement $\mu $ on $P$ has $\text{ker(}\mu \text{)}\,=\,\max (P)$. We also correct a mistake in the literature asserting that $[0,\,{{\omega }_{1}})$ is a space of this type. We show that if $P$ is a Scott domain and $X\,\subseteq \,\max (P)$ is a ${{G}_{\delta }}$-subset of $P$, then $X$ has a ${{G}_{\delta }}$-diagonal and is weakly developable. We show that if $X\,\subseteq \,\max (P)$ is a ${{G}_{\delta }}$-subset of $P$, where $P$ is a domain but perhaps not a Scott domain, then $X$ is domain-representable, first-countable, and is the union of dense, completely metrizable subspaces. We also show that there is a domain $P$ such that $\max (P)$ is the usual space of countable ordinals and is a ${{G}_{\delta }}$-subset of $P$ in the Scott topology. Finally we show that the kernel of a measurement on a Scott domain can consistently be a normal, separable, non-metrizable Moore space.

To each filter ℱ on ω, a certain linear subalgebra A(ℱ) of Rω, the countable product of lines, is assigned. This algebra is shown to have many interesting topological properties, depending on the properties of the filter ℱ. For example, if ℱ is a free ultrafilter, then A(ℱ) is a Baire subalgebra of ℱω for which the game OF introduced by Tkachenko is undetermined (this resolves a problem of Hernández, Robbie and Tkachenko); and if ℱ1 and ℱ2 are two free filters on ω that are not near coherent (such filters exist under Martin's Axiom), then A (ℱ1) and A(ℱ2) are two o-bounded and OF-undetermined subalgebras of ℱω whose product A(ℱ1) × A(ℱ2) is OF-determined and not o-bounded (this resolves a problem of Tkachenko). It is also shown that the statement that the product of two o-bounded subrings of ℱω is o-bounded is equivalent to the set-theoretic principle NCF (Near Coherence of Filters); this suggests that Tkachenko's question on the productivity of the class of o-bounded topological groups may be undecidable in ZFC.

In this work we study the structure of approximate solutions of variational problems with continuous integrands f: [0, ∞) × Rn × Rn → R1 which belong to a complete metric space of functions. The main result in this paper deals with the turnpike property of variational problems. To have this property means that the approximate solutions of the problems are determined mainly by the integrand, and are essentially independent of the choice of interval and endpoint conditions, except in regions close to the endpoints.

In this paper, we investigate Volterra spaces and relevant topological properties. New characterizations of weakly Volterra spaces are provided. An analogy of the Banach category theorem in terms of Volterra properties is obtained. It is shown that every weakly Volterra homogeneous space is Volterra, and there are metrizable Baire spaces whose hyperspaces of nonempty compact subsets endowed with the Vietoris topology are not weakly Volterra.

In this paper, the concept of essential equilibria for production economies is first given. We then prove that in ‘most’ production economies (in the sense of Baire category) all equilibria are essential.
