Flumioxazin plus metolachlor mixtures preemergence (PRE) were evaluated with or without postemergence (POST) herbicides for weed control and peanut (Arachis hypogaea) response in three North Carolina studies. Metolachlor PRE at 2.24 kg ai/ha controlled goosegrass (Eleusine indica) and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) 93 and 80%, respectively, and control was not improved with flumioxazin or norflurazon. Metolachlor plus flumioxazin PRE at 0.07 or 0.11 kg ai/ha controlled common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album); entireleaf (Ipomoea hederacea var. integriuscula), ivyleaf (I. hederacea), and pitted morningglory (I. lacunosa); and prickly sida (Sida spinosa) better than metolachlor plus norflurazon PRE at 1.34 kg ai/ha. Morningglories (Ipomoea spp.) were controlled 77 and 86% with flumioxazin PRE at 0.07 and 0.11 kg/ha, respectively, and control was increased to nearly 100% with acifluorfen plus 2,4-DB or lactofen plus 2,4-DB POST. Peanut injury by flumioxazin and norflurazon was observed at one location in 1997; however, yields were not reduced. Peanut treated with metolachlor plus flumioxazin PRE at either rate yielded at least 3,750 kg/ha compared to 3,120 kg/ha with metolachlor plus norflurazon PRE or 1,320 kg/ha with metolachlor PRE.

Greenhouse studies were conducted to evaluate potential interactions among glyphosate mixtures with five acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides (chlorimuron, imazamox, imazaquin, MON 12,000, or pyrithiobac) for the control of purple nutsedge and sicklepod at two growth stages. Herbicides were tested alone at 0.5X and 1X rates (1X being suggested use rate for these herbicides) and in combination with glyphosate at 560 (0.5X) and 1,120 (1X) g ai/ha on 3-wk-old plants and at 1,120 g/ha on 6-wk-old plants. Glyphosate alone at 1,120 g/ha gave complete control of purple nutsedge and at least 78% control of sicklepod regardless of growth stage. In 3-wk-old purple nutsedge plants, three of the 20 herbicide combinations were antagonistic and 17 combinations were additive, whereas all five combinations were additive in 6-wk-old plants. In sicklepod, eight combinations were antagonistic and 12 combinations were additive in 3-wk-old plants, and all five combinations were antagonistic in 6-wk-old plants. In 3-wk-old plants, the glyphosate (0.5X) plus imazaquin (0.5X) combination resulted in highest antagonism in purple nutsedge control (79%), and the combination of glyphosate (0.5X) plus imazamox (0.5X) resulted in highest antagonism in sicklepod control (54%). These results indicate that mixing chlorimuron, imazamox, imazaquin, MON 12,000, or pyrithiobac with glyphosate does not increase glyphosate efficacy on purple nutsedge or sicklepod.

Rhizobacteria have been shown to be phytotoxic to leafy spurge in laboratory assays. This field study investigated the influence of two strains of Pseudomonas fluorescens [Trevisan, (Migula)], deleterious rhizobacteria (DRB), on root weight, root bud number, and root carbohydrate content of leafy spurge at three sites located in northeast and north-central South Dakota. Soils were inoculated with 2 g of starch-based granules containing no bacteria or starch granules containing 108colony-forming units (cfu)/g of either bacterial strain LS102 (Montana origin) or LS174 (South Dakota origin). Bacterial strains were detected on root samples from treated areas. Root weight and root carbohydrate content were reduced about 20% compared to roots from control plots.

Absorption, translocation, and metabolism of rimsulfuron were studied in three solanaceous weeds. Eastern black nightshade is sensitive (> 95% injury), hairy nightshade is moderately sensitive (50 to 99% injury), and black nightshade is tolerant to rimsulfuron postemergence (POST). Seedlings at the four- to six-leaf stage were treated with foliar-applied 14C-labeled rimsulfuron for 3, 6, 24, and 48 h after treatment. Absorption of rimsulfuron by all weeds increased with time. Black and eastern black nightshade absorbed comparable amounts of radioactivity at each exposure time. Hairy nightshade absorbed less radiolabeled herbicide than the other two nightshades at any treatment time. Hairy nightshade absorbed 54% of the applied radioactivity at 48 h, compared to 74% absorbed by the other weeds. Translocation of rimsulfuron out of the treated leaf was rapid in all species. Black and eastern black nightshade translocated 50 to 70% of the absorbed radioactivity out of the treated leaf with 40 to 50% moving to the upper foliage. In hairy nightshade, about 40% of the absorbed radioactivity translocated out of the treated leaf with equal amounts moving to the upper and lower foliage. Metabolism of 14C-rimsulfuron was rapid in the three nightshades with approximately 54% remaining as rimsulfuron at 3 h after treatment. The levels of the detected metabolites of rimsulfuron were similar in the three nightshade weeds. Differential early uptake and translocation may account for the differential sensitivity of these nightshade species to rimsulfuron.

The ability of grassed waterways to remediate herbicide loads in runoff water was evaluated using simulated and on-site nursery research. Isoxaben plus oryzalin and isoxaben plus trifluralin were applied to model grassed (zoysiagrass or ‘Tifway 10’ hybrid bermudagrass) and nongrassed, metal and clay loam waterways, and runoff samples were collected. Grassed waterways reduced runoff volume an average of 47% and herbicide residues an average of 56% compared to nongrassed waterways. The smallest herbicide residues were from the clay/grass waterways. In a nursery study, isoxaben and trifluralin were applied to containerized landscape plant production beds. Overhead irrigation was applied and runoff water was channeled into either a clay/gravel waterway or a hybrid bermudagrass waterway. Samples were collected for 22 d following application. Isoxaben persisted through 15 d after application. Trifluralin was detected through 2 d after application. Total isoxaben recovered from the clay/gravel waterway was 32% of applied, and total trifluralin recovered was 0.9% of applied. The grass waterway reduced residues of isoxaben and trifluralin by 22 and 66%, respectively, compared to the clay/gravel waterway.

Johnsongrass, a tall, coarse, perennial grass, is the second most common and troublesome weed in field corn in Texas. Field experiments were conducted in 1996 to 1998 to evaluate an integrated johnsongrass management program in bedded and irrigated field corn. Nicosulfuron at 26.3 g ai/ha applied banded over the row to 50% of the planted area plus one cultivation resulted in johnsongrass control of aboveground and rhizome biomass and in corn yield comparable to the labeled rate (35 g ai/ha) when applied two consecutive years in the same plots. This treatment reduced cost 27% and reduced herbicide input 62% compared to nicosulfuron applied broadcast at labeled rate without cultivation. Economic benefits of this johnsongrass management program are promising for field corn producers.

Changing the number of ethylene oxide (EO) units on a nonylphenol surfactant changes its physicochemical and biological properties. Increasing the number of EO units makes the surfactant more hydrophilic and increases its hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB). Surfactants with high HLB values, more than 16, were the most active with the hydrophilic herbicide glyphosate. More lipophilic surfactants with HLB values from 11 to 13 were more active with the lipophilic herbicide, the ethyl ester of quizalofop-P. Surfactants with intermediate HLB values were the most active with the herbicide that had intermediate water solubility, nicosulfuron. Matching the physicochemical properties of the herbicide and surfactant improved biological efficacy on giant foxtail.

Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to confirm and quantify linuron resistance in common purslane (Portulaca oleracea) collected from a carrot (Daucus carota) field in Imlay City, MI. Preliminary evaluation was made using a flotation test kit to identify resistance to linuron and atrazine. Subsequent greenhouse experiments indicated that this common purslane was resistant to 11.2 kg/ha linuron and 179 kg/ha atrazine. The resistance ratio for linuron was > 300 and was > 400 for atrazine. The resistant common purslane was also highly resistant to diuron, cyanazine, and prometryn but had a low level of negative cross-resistance to bromoxynil. Both resistant and susceptible biotypes of common purslane were sensitive to hexazinone and bentazon.

Field studies were conducted in South Carolina to evaluate the herbicides acifluorfen, chlorimuron, and imazaquin for control of Palmer amaranth and smooth pigweed in soybean, when applied 3 wk after weed emergence. Palmer amaranth was more difficult to control than smooth pigweed. Compared to untreated controls, acifluorfen, chlorimuron, and imazaquin reduced Palmer amaranth and smooth pigweed biomass 78 and 96%, 80 and 98%, and 82 and 99% at 30 d after treatment (DAT), 60 DAT, and at soybean harvest, respectively. The high rate (140 g/ha) of imazaquin provided greater control of Palmer amaranth than other herbicide treatments at soybean harvest. Except for the 140 g/ha rate of imazaquin, inadequate control of Palmer amaranth resulted in lower soybean seed yields for all herbicide treatments than the weed-free control. However, all herbicides controlled smooth pigweed to provide soybean seed yields similar to the weed-free control.

Resistance of weeds to herbicides that were initially controlled by that herbicide has increased in all major crops and forages. An internet web site, http//weedscience.com, logs all confirmed resistant weed species and their location by country. Management of these species and the cost of those management techniques was the focus of this symposium. The group of scientists assembled for this symposium were chosen to discuss the systems currently utilized in the management of species that are resistant to a single or to multiple groups of herbicides. It is hoped that information presented on the cost of managing these resistant species will further encourage the judicious use of herbicides, the implementation of agronomic practices, and crop rotations to delay the development of resistance to other areas.

A 3-yr study was conducted in eastern Wyoming from 1995 to 1997 to evaluate the effect of fertilizer placement on jointed goatgrass competitiveness with winter wheat. Fertilizer placement methods consisted of applying 45 kg/ha of nitrogen (50% as urea and 50% as ammonium nitrate) in a deep band 5 cm below and 2.5 cm to the side of the wheat row, broadcasting on the soil surface, or injecting fertilizer by spoke wheel 10 cm deep and 5 cm to the side of the wheat row. Neither fertilizer placement nor jointed goatgrass presence affected winter wheat stand. Wheat yield reductions from jointed goatgrass competition were 7 and 10% higher with the broadcast than deep-band or spoke-wheel injection methods, respectively. Wheat spikes/plant, seeds/spike, 200-seed weight, and plant height were not influenced by fertilizer placement; however, the presence of 35 jointed goatgrass plants/m2 reduced spikes/plant 21%, seeds/spike 12%, and 200-seed weight 6%. Jointed goatgrass populations were not influenced by fertilizer placement method; however, the number of spikes/plant was reduced 8 and 10%, joints/spike 3%, and biomass 15 and 21% by deep band or spoke wheel fertilizer placement.

Field studies were conducted to determine if metribuzin–diclofop combinations could provide selective control of mature goosegrass in common bermudagrass turf. In two field trials, diclofop at 1.7 kg ai/ha provided 19% control of mature goosegrass at 7 wk after treatment (WAT), whereas metribuzin at 0.28 or 0.56 kg ai/ha controlled 30 and 53%, respectively. When diclofop at 1.7 kg/ha was combined with metribuzin at 0.28 or 0.56 kg/ha, goosegrass control increased to 68 and 90%, respectively. That degree of mature goosegrass control with a single application of metribuzin at 0.56 kg/ha plus diclofop at 1.7 kg/ha was equivalent to metribuzin at 0.56 kg/ha plus MSMA at 2.2 kg ae/ha followed by MSMA at 2.2 kg/ha 1 wk later. The metribuzin–diclofop combination injured common bermudagrass turf less than or equivalent to the metribuzin–MSMA combination. The injury was transitory; at 3 WAT, none of the treatments injured common bermudagrass.

Field trials evaluated sequential applications of plant growth retardants (PGRs) to bahiagrass for a 3-yr period at two Florida locations: Newberry (north Florida) and Okeechobee (south Florida). Seven PGRs from various chemical families were used: glyphosate, fluazifop, sethoxydim, maleic hydrazide, trinexapac-ethyl, imazapic, and imazaquin. In 1991 and 1992, PGRs reduced turf color for 2 to 4 wk after treatment (WAT) at the Newberry location but remained above acceptable levels (> 5.0) and recovered by 6 WAT. In 1993, glyphosate, fluazifop, and maleic hydrazide reduced turf color below acceptable levels (< 5.0) 4 WAT, but turf color was acceptable by 6 WAT. Turf color was slightly reduced following single and sequential imazapic applications in Okeechobee; however, turf recovered by 8 WAT. Cumulative seedhead suppression at both locations increased during the 3 yr resulting in at least a 60% reduction in seedhead numbers. Seedhead production each year was 10 to 50% less at 12 WAT in treated plots than in the previous year. Single applications of imazapic and imazapic + imazaquin provided 85 to 100% seedhead suppression for 12 WAT and 100% suppression for up to 16 wk following sequential applications made 8 wk after the initial application (WAI). Single applications of glyphosate, fluazifop, and maleic hydrazide provided ≥ 70% seedhead suppression for 4 to 8 WAT. Sequential applications of fluazifop made 8 WAI provided > 70% control of seedheads through 8 to 16 WAI for 3 yr.

A method of calculating the cost to farmers of herbicide resistance in weeds is described along with examples to demonstrate the inherent difficulties and benefits. The main problem is defining cropping systems/practices and herbicide strategies that prevent the development of resistance. The benefits include focusing advisory and research efforts and helping to persuade farmers to adopt practices that prevent the development of resistance.

Field studies were conducted in 1993–1994 and 1994–1995 to evaluate the effects of preherbicide mowing and herbicide rate on tropical soda apple (TSA) control. Mature TSA plants were mowed one, two, or three times to a 7.5-cm stubble with a 60-d interval between mowings. Triclopyr was applied at 0, 0.6, and 1.1 kg ai/ha at 375 L/ha at 207 kPa 60 d after each mowing treatment. Mowing TSA plants twice before an application of 0.6 kg ai/ha triclopyr resulted in 100% control. Tropical soda apple control (2-yr average) for the triclopyr treatment increased between one (28% control) and two (82% control) preherbicide mowings, with no additional control benefits from three mowings (84% control). In a second study, TSA control increased from 10% 60 d after a single mowing to 92% after three consecutive mowings at 60-d intervals with no herbicide. Total nonstructural carbohydrates in TSA crowns decreased from 19.1% for unclipped plants to 4.3% 60 d after three preherbicide mowings.

Surveys were conducted across the northern Great Plains of Canada in 1996 and 1997 to determine the nature and occurrence of herbicide-resistant (HR) biotypes of wild oat (Avena fatua). The surveys indicated that resistance to acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitors (Group 1) occurred most frequently relative to other herbicide groups. Group 1-HR wild oat occurred in over one-half of fields surveyed in each of the three prairie provinces. Of particular concern was the relatively high incidence of multiple-group resistance in wild oat in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. In Saskatchewan, 18% of Group 1-HR populations were also resistant to acetolactate synthase inhibitors (imidazolinones), even though these herbicides were not frequently used. In Manitoba, 27% of fields surveyed had wild oat resistant to herbicides from more than one group. Four populations were resistant to all herbicides registered for use in wheat (Triticum aestivum). Depending on the nature of resistance in wild oat, alternative herbicides available for their control may substantially increase costs to the grower. The cost to growers of managing HR wild oat in Saskatchewan and Manitoba using alternative herbicides is estimated at over $4 million annually. For some HR biotypes, alternative herbicides either are not available or all have the same site of action, which restricts crop or herbicide rotation options and threatens the future sustainability of small-grain annual cropping systems where these infestations occur.

A commercial fertilizer (40-0-0, N-P-K) was screened into seven particle size fractions (23, 58, 165, 465, 1,310, 3,728, or 10,606 particles/g) and coated with dithiopyr (0.345%, wt/wt), prodiamine (0.689%), oryzalin (3.28%), or oxadiazon (2.76%). Dithiopyr and oryzalin provided best southern crabgrass control with a fertilizer size of 465 particles/g or greater, whereas prodiamine controlled southern crabgrass greatest using a size fraction at least 165 particles/g. Southern crabgrass control with oxadiazon was not as dependent on particle size, with all fraction sizes of 58 or 165 particles/g or greater controlling southern crabgrass equally in 1995 or 1996, respectively.
