Mayweed chamomile seeds were collected from six different fields across the Pacific Northwest. All populations (each collection site was considered a population) were suspected to have some level of acetolactate synthase (ALS) resistance. Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to determine if these populations were resistant to three different classes of ALS inhibitors: sulfonylureas (SU), imidazolinones (IMI), and triazolopyrimidines (TP). A whole-plant dose–response and in vitro ALS activity studies confirmed cross-resistance to thifensulfuron + tribenuron/chlorsulfuron (SU), imazethapyr (IMI), and cloransulam (TP); however, resistance varied by herbicide class and population. Two ALS isoforms of the ALS gene (ALS1 and ALS2) were identified in mayweed chamomile; however, only mutations in ALS1 were responsible for resistance. No mutations were found in ALS2. Sequence analysis of the partial ALS gene identified four point mutations at position 197 (Pro197 to Leu, Gln, Thr, or Ser) in the resistant populations. This study demonstrates genotypic variation associated with cross-resistance to ALS inhibitors within and between populations.

Ethylene-stimulated germination of witchweed [Striga lutea Lour. = S. asiatica (L.) O. Ktze.] seed first occurred after 13, 10, 6, 3, and 2 days of conditioning in moist sand at day/night temperatures of 20/14, 23/17, 26/20, 29/23, and 32/26 C, respectively. Maximum germination percentages in these regimes were 0.5, 3, 20, 24, and 37%, respectively. No germination occurred at 17/11 C. Witchweed seed survived in sand frozen for 7 weeks at −7 or −15 C and subsequently germinated in response to ethylene or in the presence of corn (Zea mays L., ‘DeKalb B73 × Mo.17H′) roots. The parasites emerged from the soil and flowered when maintained at 29/23 C after the termination of the freezing treatments. In other experiments, witchweed parasitized corn and/or sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench ‘DeKalb E-59+′] root systems in a sandy loam under 26/17, 26/20, 29/20, 32/23, and 32/26 C day/night regimes. Witchweed emerged from the soil with 26/20, 29/20, 32/23, and 32/26 C and flowered with 26/20, 32/23, and 32/26 C day/night regimes. Underground development and subsequent emergence of the parasites were substantially reduced with day/night temperatures below 29/20 C. Winter soil temperatures and growing season soil and air temperatures are unlikely to limit the spread of witchweed into important corn- and sorghum-producing areas of the United States.

Velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic. ♯4 ABUTH) seeds were exposed to variable moisture and temperatures from 15 to 100 C. As temperature increased, the percent of permeable seeds increased. Soaking 1 h at 70 C reduced hard seeds from 99 to 15 percent. Increased available water increased the effect of temperature on reduction of hard seeds. Thus, immersion in hot water was more effective than dry or humid heat. High temperature acted within a few minutes to reduce hardseededness. Viability of hard seeds was reduced at temperatures above 70 C. Germination of permeable seeds was optimal at 24 to 30 C and declined above 35 C. Germination of permeable seeds decreased after pretreatments above 40 C. Temperature and duration of heat exposure were inversely related to germination inhibition. Recently harvested seeds (3-yr-old) remained hard under alternating 4 to 34 C but became permeable after drying at 34 C. Old seeds (15-yr) did not become permeable after drying.

Broomrapes (Orobanche spp.) are chlorophyll-lacking root parasites of many dicotyledonous species and cause severe damage to vegetable and field crops from several botanic families such as Fabaceae, Solanaceae, Compositae, and Umbelliferae. In Oregon, small broomrape has been identified as a parasite of red clover. In Oregon field studies, small broomrape control was excellent when imazamox was applied postemergence to red clover but preemergence to small broomrape. Temperature is one of the main factors that affect broomrape development. The objective of this study was to optimize small broomrape chemical control in red clover based on growing degree days (GDD). The study was conducted in controlled temperature conditions. Red clover plants were grown in soil artificially infested with small broomrape seeds. Imazamox was applied at 800, 1,000, 1,200, and 1,400 GDD. There was no injury to red clover from any imazamox treatment at any of the application timings. Small broomrape shoot emergence was reduced where imazamox was applied compared to the untreated control. Early imazamox applications reduced small broomrape biomass more than later applications. Control was greatest when imazamox was applied at 20 g ai ha−1 at 1,000 GDD. This application controlled small broomrape for 800 GDD after initial treatment. However, season-long control would require an additional treatment. This model predicts the optimal timing and rate of imazamox application for small broomrape control in red clover.

The herbicide cinmethylin {exo-1-methyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-2-[(2-methylphenyl)methoxy]-7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] heptane} inhibited oat (Avena sativa L. ‘Porter’) root growth during the first 6 h of treatment at a concentration of 6.7 × 10-8 M. A concentration of 1 × 10-8 M cinmethylin inhibited root growth within 12 to 18 h. Inhibition of shoot growth was less sensitive, but was inhibited by 36 to 48 h after treatment with 1 × 10-7 M and by 12 to 24 h after treatment with 1 × 10-5 M cinmethylin. Cinmethylin concentrations of 1 × 10-5 M and lower did not inhibit cell elongation in isolated oat coleoptiles during a 24-h exposure. Mitotic frequency in oat root tips was reduced after 12 h of treatment with 1 × 10-7 M cinmethylin. The frequency of all stages of mitosis (prophase, metaphase, and anaphase + telophase) was reduced. Concentrations of 1 × 10-6 M cinmethylin resulted in nearly complete arrest (87% inhibition) of mitosis. These data suggest cinmethylin inhibits growth by inhibiting entry of cells into mitosis. The cause of mitotic arrest is unknown; however, the mechanism appears to be different from other herbicides known to inhibit mitosis.

Extracts of many plants have been shown to contain germination and growth inhibitors (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). In some instances these inhibitors play a role in the distribution of species. Thus dried Encelia leaves contain a material which leaches slowly into the ground and inhibits the growth of species susceptible to it (2). This suggests that certain weeds may be aided in their competition with crop plants by similar inhibitors. Helgeson and Konzak (4), for example, found that aqueous extracts of field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) and Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) inhibited the germination of seeds and growth of seedlings of certain crop species.

2-chloro-4-isopropylamino-6-ethylamino-s-triazine (atrazine) applied at 3 lb/A to wheat stubble shortly after harvest in 1961 and 1962 controlled all vegetation for the remainder of the season. 2-chloro-4,6-bis(isopropylamino)-s-triazine (propazine) was nearly as effective as atrazine in 1962. Grain sorghum was planted in the spring of 1962. No preplanting tillage was used, and no weed control measures were needed in sorghum during the growing season on the treated plots, and crop stands, vigor, and grain yields were superior to those on the cultivated checks.

Simazine, 2-chloro-4, 6-bis (ethylamino)-s-triazine, can give excellent control of annual weeds in corn for most of the growing season. However, a number of workers have reported injury to susceptible crops the year following applications of four or five pounds of simazine per acre. The persistence of simazine is thus of considerable importance to the user who practices crop rotation. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors involved in the dissipation of simazine from the soil.

In field studies conducted in 1971 through 1977 weed yields were higher in EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) and alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide]-treated areas as compared to handweeded plots. Weeds present in EPTC-and alachlortreated areas did not result in a significant field bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. ‘Great Northern 59’) yield reduction as compared to hand-weeded plots. For every 1000 kg of dry weeds present in field beans there was a corresponding decrease in field bean yields of 208 kg/ha. Weed yields produced in plots treated with alachlor, dinitramine (N4,N4-diethyl-α,α,α-trifluoro-3,5-dinitrotoluene-2,4-diamine), EPTC, metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide], trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine), and profluralin [N-(cyclopropylmethyl)-α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N-propyl-p-toluidine] were significantly less when herbicides were incorporated with the rotary tiller as compared to incorporation with the spike-tooth harrow. Incorporation method was not as critical with butralin [4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-N-(1-methylpropyl)-2,6-dinitrobenzenamine], with spike-tooth harrow incorporation of herbicides providing similar weed control to that obtained with the rotary tiller. Weed densities and yields were higher in plots seeded with field bean determinate variety ‘Great Northern 1140’ than in plots seeded with indeterminate variety ‘Tara’, when either EPTC or alachlor were applied preplant and incorporated. Neither field bean variety competed well with weeds when no herbicide was used.

Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the extent of cross-resistance of chlorsulfuron-resistant sugarbeet (CR1-B) to other herbicides that inhibit acetolactate synthase (ALS) and to determine the physiological basis of resistance. Cross-resistance to metsulfuron, imazaquin, and imazethapyr was not evident, while only marginal cross-resistance was observed to triasulfuron, DPX-L5300, and nicosulfuron. CR1-B was moderately resistant to chlorsulfuron and chlorimuron and was highly cross-resistant to thifensulfuron and primisulfuron. Further greenhouse studies demonstrated that CR1-B was not significantly injured by thifensulfuron and primisulfuron applied at or exceeding the field use rate. Studies with 14C-primisulfuron showed that differential absorption or metabolism of primisulfuron could not account for the observed resistance. ALS enzyme assays showed that the CR1-B ALS enzyme activity was 66, 26, and 13 times less sensitive to chlorsulfuron, thifensulfuron, and primisulfuron inhibition, respectively, compared to ALS enzyme extracted from sensitive sugarbeets. An altered ALS enzyme, which is less sensitive to sulfonylurea herbicide inhibition, appears to be the physiological basis of resistance.

Repeated use of propanil to control barnyardgrass (BYG) and other weeds in rice has led to the development of propanil-resistant barnyardgrass (R-BYG). R-BYG possesses elevated aryl acylamidase activity levels, which cause rapid metabolism of propanil analogous to propanil degradation in rice. The current screening method for determining propanil resistance in BYG requires about 10 mo. The present study examined the use of chlorophyll fluorescence as a more rapid method to identify propanil resistance in BYG soon after it is suspected. Chlorophyll fluorescence data from excised BYG leaf tissue (R-BYG and susceptible-BYG [S-BYG]; 13- to 41-d-old) exposed to 100 μM propanil for 2 h indicated a 95 to 100% inhibition of electron transport (photosynthesis inhibition) in both R- and S-BYG. However, when incubated in water in the dark for 22 h after the initial 2-h treatment, metabolism in R-BYG was sufficient to reduce levels of absorbed propanil and facilitate recovery. Lack of metabolism of propanil prevented recovery in S-BYG, thus allowing the two biotypes to be distinguished easily by the chlorophyll fluorescence assay. Further studies using this 2-h exposure to 100 μM propanil followed by a 22-h recovery period evaluated several assay parameters. A longer recovery time and the effects of various propanil concentrations were also evaluated. A herbicide dose-response curve showed the greatest difference in photosynthesis inhibition for both biotypes at about 100 μM propanil, but both biotypes were inhibited > 95% when treated with 400 μM propanil. Inhibition of photosynthesis in both biotypes was greatest when the recovery incubation temperature was 35 C compared to 20, 25, and 30 C. Fluorescence data from harvested tissue stored moist in plastic bags at 23 C (to simulate shipment) showed that biotypes could be differentiated even when received as late as 4 d after harvest. Thus, samples can be harvested from the field soon after propanil failure and resistance or susceptibility to propanil determined after only a few days. This technique can greatly reduce the time, space, and labor currently required to determine propanil resistance in BYG.

Leaching of seven s-triazines in Lakeland fine sandy soil under greenhouse and field conditions was demonstrated by use of oats (Avena sativa L., var Seminole) and cucumber (Cucumis sativis L., var. Palomar) for bioassay. Depth of leaching was determined by abnormalities of these species grown in soil samples from the surface of treated soil to a depth of 22 in in the field and to 36 in in columns. Symptoms of injury by the different materials were similar and included primarily leaf chlorosis of both species and bending and breaking of cucumber stems within 7 to 10 days after planting; plants that failed to survive usually died 12 to 14 days after planting. Leaching of 2-methoxy-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine (atratone) was greatest, followed in decreasing order by 2-chloro-4,6-bis(isopropylamino)-s-triazine (propazine), 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine (atrazine), 2-chloro-4,6-bis(ethylamino)-s-triazine (simazine), 2-chloro-4-diethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine (ipazine), 2-ethylamino-4-isopropylamino-6-methylmercapto-s-triazine (ametryne), and 2,4-bis(isopropylamino)-6-methylmercapto-s-triazine (prometryne). Oats did not significantly reduce the soil concentration of ametryne and prometryne during a growing period of 56 days.

A mechanistic model was constructed for common ragweed growth and development based on the generic plant model CROPSIM. Adaptations were made to CROPSIM's growth and development subroutines to enable common ragweed growth to be simulated. Data from field studies using a single-source common ragweed grown in monoculture and from the literature were used to parameterize the model. The influences of varying environmental conditions across years, densities, and emergence timing on leaf number, leaf area, leaf weight, height, and biomass accumulation were taken into account by the model. Deviations between simulated and measured values generally fell within a relatively narrow range. Deviations outside this range tended to be associated with common ragweed growth shortly after emergence, particularly during temperature and moisture extremes. Future versions of the CROPSIM model may need to include more detailed algorithms for upper soil surface layer temperature and moisture conditions and improved germination and emergence algorithms to reduce these deviations.

Toxicity of non-radiolabeled and absorption and translocation of 14C-activity of applied 14C-acifluorfen {5-[2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy]-2-nitrobenzoic acid} in showy crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilis Roth) were evaluated in the growth chamber at air temperatures of 18, 27, or 35 C and 40 or 100% relative humidity (RH). Four days after treatment, acifluorfen applied over-the-top at 0.1 kg/ha resulted in 64 to 95% injury, but did not kill showy crotalaria. Acifluorfen was more toxic at 100% than at 40% RH. At either 40 or 100% RH, acifluorfen was more toxic at 27 and 35 C than at 18 C. Plants were placed in the greenhouse 4 days after treatment. At 6 weeks after treatment, there was extensive regrowth, and injury to all plants was less than 32%, except for those plants initially treated at 18 C and 40% RH for 4 days. These plants showed 76% injury. Acifluorfen applied to a single leaf midway up the stem caused 80 to 100% injury to the immature leaves near the apex, but less than 30% injury to lower leaves. Absorption of 14C-activity from 14C-acifluorfen applied to a single leaf midway up the shoot varied from 8 to 76% after 2 days. At either 40 or 100% RH, absorption was approximately four-fold greater at 27 and 35 C than at 18 C. At all temperatures tested, absorption was three- to four-fold greater at 100% than at 40% RH.

Yellow starthistle is one of the most important alien invasive weeds in the western United States. It has been targeted for biological control based on the assumption that its abundance is limited by natural enemies in its native region but not in the United States. The geographic center of diversity for yellow starthistle appears to be in Turkey. This region is being explored to discover potential biological control agents; however, there is no quantitative information regarding the population density or dynamics of the plant in this region. Such information could help determine which natural enemies help suppress the plant in its land of origin. We measured densities of yellow starthistle plants and seeds during 2 yr at three locations in central Turkey. Densities of mature plants were about 4% of those measured at sites in California. Densities of capitula and seeds produced were about 60 and 65%, respectively, of those measured in California. The greatest difference between the two regions appears to be the densities of mature plants, which indicates the importance of focusing research on natural enemies that reduce plant survival.

Experiments were conducted to investigate enhanced biodegradation of carbamothioates and to evaluate the effect of microbial inhibitors on the efficacy of butylate [S-ethyl bis(2-methylpropyl)carbamothioate], EPTC (S-ethyl dipropylcarbamothioate), and vernolate (S-propyl dipropylcarbamothioate) in soils that had received butylate treatment in previous years (butylate-history soils). Inhibitors used were fonofos (O-ethyl-S-phenylether phosphonodithioate) and R-33865 (O,O-diethyl-O-phenylphosphorothioate). R-33865 and fonofos significantly improved control of large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. # DIGSA] with butylate and EPTC in corn (Zea mays L. ‘Coker 21’). Bioassay data reflected more residual phytotoxicity from butylate and EPTC when these herbicides were combined with the microbial inhibitors. In butylate-history soils planted to soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Wright’], R-33865 did not improve the efficacy of vernolate. These results indicated some cross-adaptation of the butylate-adapted microorganisms for EPTC, but no cross-adaptation was detected for vernolate. Under laboratory conditions, 14C-butylate was degraded more rapidly to 14CO2 in butylate-history soils than in non-butylate-history soils.

Spot spraying POST herbicides is an effective approach to reduce herbicide input and weed control cost. Machine vision detection of grass or grass-like weeds in turfgrass systems is a challenging task due to the similarity in plant morphology. In this work, we explored the feasibility of using image classification with deep convolutional neural networks (DCNN), including AlexNet, GoogLeNet, and VGGNet, for detection of crabgrass species (Digitaria spp.), doveweed [Murdannia nudiflora (L.) Brenan], dallisgrass (Paspalum dilatatum Poir.), and tropical signalgrass [Urochloa distachya (L.) T.Q. Nguyen] in bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.]. VGGNet generally outperformed AlexNet and GoogLeNet in detecting selected grassy weeds. For detection of P. dilatatum, VGGNet achieved high F1 scores (≥0.97) and recall values (≥0.99). A single VGGNet model exhibited high F1 scores (≥0.93) and recall values (1.00) that reliably detected Digitaria spp., M. nudiflora, P. dilatatum, and U. distachya. Low weed density reduced the recall values of AlexNet at detecting all weed species and GoogLeNet at detecting Digitaria spp. In comparison, VGGNet achieved excellent performances (overall accuracy = 1.00) at detecting all weed species in both high and low weed-density scenarios. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using DCNN for detection of grass or grass-like weeds in turfgrass systems.

A study was conducted under controlled environmental conditions to determine the effect of soil temperature, soil moisture, and depth of seed burial on the emergence of redstem filaree. Emergence occurred from 5 to 30 C but was optimal at 5 to 15 C. Redstem filaree emergence was optimal in moist soil with water contents of −0.03 to −0.28 MPa. Emergence progressively decreased as soil moisture was lowered below these levels, with less than 25% emergence attained at −1.53 MPa regardless of soil temperature. Almost no germination was observed in warm (30 C), dry (-1.03 to −1.53 MPa) soils. Rate of emergence was affected more by soil temperature than by moisture. A decrease in temperature from 20 to 5 C increased the time to reach 50% emergence by 6 to 8 d but a decrease in soil moisture from −0.03 to −1.53 MPa increased the time to reach 50% emergence by only 1 to 2 d. Emergence was greatest at soil depths of 1 cm or less. No emergence occurred at depths of 8 cm or below.

Parthenium weed, an annual herb native to tropical America, causes severe economic, human, and animal health and environmental impacts in Australia and in many countries in Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. There is little known about variation in reproductive output in naturally occurring populations of this weed. This information is vital to develop plant population models, devise management strategies to reduce seed output, and formulate parthenium weed pollen-induced human health (e.g., dermatitis and hay fever) risk assessment. Here, the variations in the number of capitula produced by the parthenium weed at two sites in Queensland, Australia, over a 4-yr period are reported. Under field conditions, parthenium weed produced up to 39,192 capitula per plant (> 156,768 seeds per plant), with majority of the plants (≈ 75%) producing between 11 and 1,000 capitula, and less than 0.3% of the plants producing more than 10,000 capitula (> 40,000 seeds per plant). The number of capitula per plant in the field (297 ± 22) was much lower than those reported from glasshouse and laboratory studies. Plant biomass contributed to 50 to 80% of the variation in capitulum production between plants within plots at each site, and weed density accounted for 62 to 73% of the variation in capitulum production between plots within each site. As plant size is directly correlated with reproductive output, plant size distributions in parthenium weed can be used to estimate effective population size. Information on variation in reproductive output will be used to implement management strategies to reduce parthenium weed seed output, resulting in reduced soil seed bank and weed seed spread.

Glyphosate-resistant (GR) weeds, including giant ragweed, are among the most challenging weeds for growers to control in cotton. A field study was conducted in 2011 and 2012 to determine the competitiveness of giant ragweed with densities of 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, or 1.6 plants m−1 of row. Early in the growing season, giant ragweed competition with densities of at least 0.8 plants m−1 row reduced cotton height compared with the weed-free control. Based on node above white flower (NAWF) and node above cracked boll (NACB) data, a delay in cotton maturity was observed for treatments with giant ragweed present at a density of 1.6 m−1 of cotton row for NAWF and 0.8 m−1 or 1.6 m−1 of row for NACB. Lint yield losses of 50% were estimated for cotton with rows growing along side of giant ragweed at a density of 0.26 plants m−1 row. Cotton in rows located 140 cm away from giant ragweed required an estimated 1.85 plants m−1 row to reduce yield by 50%. These data suggest that giant ragweed sphere of influence was at least 1 m wide. Cotton fiber quality was not affected by giant ragweed at any density. Giant ragweed is a highly competitive weed in cotton, even at low densities, and efforts should be implemented to control giant ragweed early in the season to prevent cotton yield loss.
