Field experiments were conducted to study the feasibility of applying glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] postemergence for the control of johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.], redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), and hemp sesbania [Sesbania exaltata (Raf.) Cory] in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. Herbicide sprays were directed across the row to weeds growing taller than soybeans in June, July, and August. Herbicide not sprayed on weeds was trapped and reused. Glyphosate at 1.12 and 1.68 kg/ha effectively controlled johnsongrass with little soybean injury and with greatly increased soybean yields. The use of 0.1% surfactant frequently increased the toxicity of glyphosate at 1.12 and 1.68 kg/ha to soybeans, but this adverse effect was overcome by the use of 0.1% anti-drift polymer in sprays. Control of redroot pigweed with glyphosate at 1.12 kg/ha was improved by the use of 0.1% surfactant, but surfactant did not increase control with glyphosate at 1.68 kg/ha. Glyphosate at 1.68 kg/ha, with 0.1% surfactant, was required to provide more than 80% control of hemp sesbania. Glyphosate applied at 1.12 kg/ha in the recirculating sprayer provided equal johnsongrass control, increased soybean yields and caused less soybean injury than when glyphosate at 0.56 kg/ha was applied over-the-top in water or in foam.

Dimethyl 2,3,5,6-tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA) on the soil surface inhibited rooting at bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L., var 328) stolon nodes. Histological studies of these root tips showed that cell division had ceased while cell enlargement continued for some time. Cells became excessively large and irregularly shaped. In corn (Zea may L., var. Pioneer 310), radicle cell size was about the same in both instances; however, treated tissue contained six times as many dinucleate cells as untreated radicle tissue. Numerous nuclei were at metaphase stage of mitosis in treated tissue. In untreated onion (Allium cepa L., var. Yellow Globe Danvers) root tips, many nuclei were found at anaphase and telophase stage of mitosis while very few cells were dividing in treated tissue.

Seedlings of winged elm (Ulmus data Michx.), bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa Michx.), black walnut (Juglans nigra L.), eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana L.), and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were treated in nutrient solution with ring-labeled 14C-tebuthiuron {N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-N,N′-dimethylurea} or 14C-hexazinone [3-cyclohexyl-6-(dimethylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione]. Four hours later, 14C was detected in all sections of winged elm treated with 14C-tebuthiuron and 14C-hexazinone. Root absorption of the tebuthiuron label by the other species occurred in the order: loblolly pine > bur oak > black walnut = eastern redcedar. The sequence of 14C-hexazinone absorption was: loblolly pine > black walnut ≥ bur oak = eastern redcedar. Foliar accumulation of the tebuthiuron label occurred in the order: bur oak > loblolly pine > eastern redcedar = black walnut, whereas the sequence with hexazinone was loblolly pine > bur oak > black walnut = eastern redcedar. The presence of the three metabolites of hexazinone in loblolly pine suggests that it may be resistant to hexazinone as a result of its ability to degrade hexazinone rather than its ability to limit uptake.

Losses due to weeds in the United States and the cost of their control are now more than $20 billion annually (35). Of this total, $13 billion represents a 10% annual loss in agricultural production that includes not only the direct competition of weeds to reduce crop yields but also the reduced quality of produce, livestock losses, and increased cost of fertilizer, irrigation, harvesting, grain drying, transportation, and storage. In addition, farmers spend more than $7.2 billion to control weeds each year. About 43% of the expenditures to control weeds is the retail cost of herbicides, $3.1 billion, in 1980 (15). The value of herbicides sold in 1984 will probably be about 15% higher than in 1980. An additional $4.1 billion represents the cost of tillage and hand labor required for weed control (35). The total loss of over $20 billion represents an indirect annual weed tax of about $85 on each individual living in the United States.

Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L. # PANMI) was controlled in corn (Zea mays L. ‘Pioneer 3747’) with postemergence-directed herbicides applied following a standard preplant-incorporated application of butylate [S-ethylbis(2-methylpropyl)carbamothioate] plus dichlormid (2,2-dichloro-N,N-di-2-propenylacetamide) plus cyanazine {2-[[4-chloro-6-(ethylamino)-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl]amino]-2-methylpropanenitrile}. Postemergence-directed applications of ametryn [N-ethyl-N′-(1-methylethyl)-6-(methylthio)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine], cloproxydim {(E,E)-2-[1-[[(3-chloro-2-propenyl)oxy]imino]butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one}, butyl ester of fluazifop {(±)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy]phenoxy] propanoic acid}, butyl ester of fluazifop-p {(R)-2-[4-[[5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy]phenoxy] propanoic acid}, glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine], methyl ester of haloxyfop {2-[4-[[3-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl]oxy]phenoxy]propanoic acid}, and sethoxydim {2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one} in 40-cm-tall corn gave greater than 90% control of 5- to 15-cm-tall proso millet while causing little or no corn injury at selected rates. Season-long proso millet control was obtained with sethoxydim at rates as low as 56 g ai/ha with no visible corn injury. Unacceptable injury to 40-cm-tall corn occurred with all but the lowest rate of sethoxydim (56 g ai/ha) when a crop oil concentrate was used. Sethoxydim applied as a directed spray at rates up to 110 g ai/ha plus 1.25% (v/v) crop oil concentrate did not injure 60-cm-tall corn.

A study was initiated in 2001at four locations in western Canada to investigate an integrated approach to managing wild oat, the region's worst weed. The study examined the effects of combining semidwarf or tall barley cultivars with normal or twice-normal barley seeding rates in either continuous barley or a barley–canola–barley–field pea–barley rotation. Herbicides were applied at 25, 50, and 100% of recommended rates. The first phase of the study was completed in 2005. This paper reports on the second phase, which was continued for four more years at two of the locations, Beaverlodge and Fort Vermilion, AB, Canada. The objective was to determine the long-term impact of the treatments on wild oat seed in the soil seed bank. In 2009 (final year), the diverse rotation combined with the higher barley seeding rate (optimal cultural practice) resulted in higher barley yields and reduced wild oat biomass compared to continuous barley and lower barley seeding rate (suboptimal cultural practice). In contrast to the first phase, barley yield was higher with the semidwarf cultivar, and cultivar had no effect on wild oat management. Wild oat seed in the soil seed bank decreased with increasing herbicide rate, but amounts were often lower with the optimal cultural practice. For example, at the recommended herbicide rate at Beaverlodge, an approximate 40-fold reduction in wild oat seed occurred with the optimal compared to the suboptimal cultural practice. The results indicate that combining optimal cultural practices with herbicides will reduce the amount of wild oat seed in the soil seed bank, and result in higher barley yields. Optimal cultural practices may also compensate for reduced herbicidal effects in terms of reducing wild oat seed accumulation in the soil seed bank and increasing barley yield. The results have implications for mitigating the evolution of herbicide resistance in wild oat.

The main objective of the Emerging Technologies Symposium at the 2007 WSSA Annual Meeting was to provide the weed science community with the principles behind emerging technologies and how they can be used to study weed biology. Specifically, aspects and applications related to genomic database development, microarrays, bioinformatics, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), marker development, and proteomics were presented. These technologies have already been used to make significant advances to our understanding of animal and plant biology and are expected to be equally beneficial within the weed science community.

Wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) is a troublesome broadleaf weed in grain production areas in South America. Herbicide resistance to multiple sites of action has been documented in this species, including protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) inhibitors. We investigated the physiological and molecular bases for PPO-inhibitor resistance in a E. heterophylla population (RPPO) from Southern Brazil. Whole-plant dose–response experiments revealed a cross-resistance profile to three different chemical groups of PPO inhibitors. Based on dose–response parameters, RPPO was resistant to lactofen (47.7-fold), saflufenacil (8.6-fold), and pyraflufen-ethyl (3.5-fold). Twenty-four hours after lactofen treatment (120 g ha−1) POST, RPPO accumulated 27 times less protoporphyrin than the susceptible population (SPPO). In addition, RPPO generated 5 and 4.5 times less hydrogen peroxide and superoxide than SPPO, respectively. The chloroplast PPO (PPO1) sequences were identical between the two populations, whereas 35 single-nucleotide polymorphisms were found for the mitochondrial PPO (PPO2). Based on protein homology modeling, the Arg-128-Leu (homologous to Arg-98-Leu in common ragweed [Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.] was the only one located near the catalytic site, also in a conserved region of PPO2. The cytochrome P450 monooxygenase inhibitor malathion did not reverse resistance to lactofen in RPPO, and both populations showed similar levels of PPO1 and PPO2 expression, suggesting that metabolic resistance and PPO overexpression are unlikely. This is the first report of an Arg-128-Leu mutation in PPO2 conferring cross-resistance to PPO inhibitors in E. heterophylla.

A biotype of annual bluegrass with suspected resistance to pronamide was collected from a golf course in Georgia. The objectives of this research were to determine the level of resistance to pronamide and the mechanisms associated with resistance. From POST applications, the pronamide rate that reduced shoot biomass 50% from the nontreated bluegrass measured>10 times higher for the resistant (R) biotype as compared with susceptible (S) biotypes. The R biotype was not controlled by PRE applications of dithiopyr or prodiamine, but was controlled >92% by PRE applications of pronamide at 0.56 and 1.68 kg ha−1. Mature plants (3- to 5-tiller) of the R biotype absorbed 32% less [14C]pronamide than the S biotype after 72 h in hydroponic culture and accumulated 39% less radioactivity per gram basis of dry shoot mass. The R biotype metabolized [14C]pronamide similar to the S biotype, averaging 16% of the extracted radioactivity. The resistance to POST pronamide applications in the R biotype is associated with reduced absorption and translocation compared with the S biotype.

Four concentrations of 3-(p-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (monuron), 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea (diuron), 1-n-butyl-3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methylurea (neburon) and 3-phenyl-1,1-dimethylurea (fenuron), adsorbed on photometrically uniform filter paper, were irradiated with ultraviolet light 253.7 millimicrons) or sunlight. Marked changes in the absorption spectra after irradiation indicated photodecomposition of the four herbicides was different with the two light sources.

Leafy spurge is a serious problem because of the speed with which it spreads and the difficulty of controlling it with available means. A rangeland economics model was developed to estimate the economic impacts of leafy spurge infestation on both ranchers and regional economies. A leafy spurge-induced carrying capacity reduction of about 580 000 animal unit months (AUMs), or enough for 77 000 cows, reduced ranchers' annual net income nearly $9 million. Ranchers did not spend another $14 million on input costs, which reduced regional business activity. The regional impacts are about $75 million in reduced business activity for all sectors. These impacts on rancher incomes and regional economies suggest the potential economic returns of leafy spurge control could be substantial.

Dormant barnyardgrass seeds imbibed in darkness for 8 days at 38 C displayed a very low fluence response to phytochrome, and very little germination occurred in darkness. However, if seeds were imbibed at temperatures >42 C or exposed to 46 C for only 0.5 h, considerable germination was evoked in the absence of a light stimulus. It is proposed that the high temperatures caused a transition in dormancy from a light-requiring to a light-independent state. The finding may have relevance to field behavior of barnyardgrass seeds where burial could prevent reception of the required light stimulus.

Nine soil-applied herbicides were evaluated in the field in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and in the greenhouse without crops to determine their effects on the control, regrowth, and tuber production of yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.). Fluridone {1-methyl-3-phenyl-5-[3-(trifluoromethyl) phenyl]-4(1H)-pyridinone} and norflurazon [4-chloro-5-(methylamino)-2-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)-3(2H)-pyridazinone] provided the best (100%) control in the greenhouse. Tubers exposed to herbicide-treated soil in the greenhouse for 4 or 8 weeks produced fewer new tubers when transplanted into nontreated soil than nontreated tubers did. Yellow nutsedge shoot and tuber populations in the field were significantly reduced by all herbicides, except for alachlor [2-chloro-2′,6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl)acetanilide], after 2 yr of treatment in cotton and soybeans.

Widely varying weed densities that had been desiccated by freezing did not reduce combine efficiency (gathering plus threshing losses) in harvesting corn (Zea mays L., var. Nebraska 508), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench, var. RS 610], or soybeans (Glycine max L., var. Ford). Average combine gathering losses with corn, sorghum, and soybeans were 2, 7, and 16%, respectively. Average threshing losses with the combine were less than 1% with corn and sorghum and less than 3% with soybeans. The high gathering losses in this study were due partly to delayed combining to allow the weeds to be desiccated by freezing temperatures.

Johnsongrass is a common weed of corn in Chile, which is most often controlled by nicosulfuron, an acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS)-inhibiting herbicide. Recurrent nicosulfuron use has resulted in selection for resistant johnsongrass biotypes. We conducted studies to determine nicosulfuron resistance levels in two johnsongrass biotypes from Chile and to investigate if this resistance was target-site mediated. Whole-plant resistance to nicosulfuron was 33 and 46 times higher in resistant (R) than in susceptible (S) plants grown from seed and rhizomes, respectively. The nicosulfuron concentrations for 50% inhibition of AHAS enzyme activity in vitro were more than 11 times higher in R than in S plants. Sequencing analysis of the AHAS coding sequence revealed a Trp-574-Leu substitution in both R biotypes. This study shows that resistance to nicosulfuron in the two R biotypes is conferred by an altered target site. We also report the first consensus sequence of the johnsongrass AHAS gene corresponding to the known mutation sites conferring resistance to AHAS-inhibiting herbicides.

In laboratory experiments, plant extracts of small everlasting (Antennaria microphylla Rydb.), field pussytoes (A. neglecta Greene), and leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.) were toxic to germinating seeds. Extracts of small everlasting inhibited vegetative development of leafy spurge, and soil taken from the immediate vicinity of roots inhibited germination and radicle elongation of germinating seeds of some species. Small everlasting competes vigorously with leafy spurge, and this competition cannot be attributed to morphology and growth habit. It suppressed vegetative growth of leafy spurge from rhizome sections in which the two species were competing in pots. In field experiments, this shallow-rooted, lowgrowing plant exhibited a marked inhibition on the growth of the vigorous, deep-rooted perennial, leafy spurge, as did the soil in which small everlasting had been growing. Antibiotic competition appears to be significant with the Antennaria spp., and the paucity of forbs in patches of leafy spurge, even when bare ground is visible between shoots, suggests that this species also exerts antibiotic effects on other plants. Allelopathy is probably a significant influence in interspacial relationships of species in most plant communities. A fuller knowledge of these relationships and their causes could lead to the utilization of this phenomenon in weed control.

Control of annual broadleaf winter weeds in dormant bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. ‘Common’] by a variety of herbicides was examined. Nearly all treatments allowed good to excellent control of spur weed (Soliva sessilis P. and K.). Metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazine-5(4H)one] was the only tested herbicide that controlled all weed species consistently with a single treatment. Bentazon [3-isopropyl-1H-2,1,3-benzothiadiazin-(4) 3H-one 2,2-dioxide] applied alone as single or repeated treatments controlled spur weed, parsley-piert (Alchemilla microcorpa Boissier Reuter), and chickweed [Stellaria media (L.) Cyrillo], but a combination of bentazon and silvex [2-(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)propionic acid] were needed for acceptable control of henbit (Lamium amplexicaule L.) and corn speedwell (Veronica arvensis L.). None of the herbicide treatments affected green-up of bermudagrass the following spring.

The butyl ester of fluazifop {[(±)-2-[4-[[5-trifluoromethyl)-2-pyridinyl] oxy] phenoxy)propanoic acid} at 0.26 μM in nutrient solution inhibited root growth of hydroponically grown goosegrass (Eleusine indica Gaertn. ♯ ELEIN), large crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop. ♯ DIGSA], and giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm. ♯ SETFA). Treating the soil and plant foliage at 0.035 or 0.07 kg ai/ha did not result in greater phytotoxicity than exposing only the foliage of each grass to the herbicide. Foliar-applied fluazifop was retained on the foliage in similar amounts by each of the species. Translocation of 14C to all plant parts was detected 6 h after foliar application of the butyl ester of 14C-fluazifop to the grasses in the pretillering or tillering stage. The majority (90%) of 14C absorbed by each of the species remained in the treated leaf. In hydroponic studies, each species exuded 14C into nutrient solution following foliar application of the 14C-labeled herbicide. The exuded material was predominantly fluazifop with small amounts of compounds more polar than the butyl ester of fluazifop. Uptake and translocation studies suggest that the greater sensitivity of goosegrass to fluazifop may be related to higher concentrations of the herbicide present in plant tissue.

The influence of soil moisture on wild oat control from soil-incorporated methyl ester of diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)-phenoxy] propanoic} was determined in the greenhouse. Wild oat control with soil-incorporated diclofop at 1.5 or 3 ppmw increased linearly when soil moisture in a Tiffany sandy loam increased from 18.5 to 23.5% (75% to 125% of field capacity). The efficacy of soil-incorporated diclofop was not reduced when soil moisture was allowed to decrease from 21 (field capacity) to 18.5, 16, 13.5, or 11% (wilting point) before rewatering to 21%. The soil moisture level at the time of herbicide application determined the degree of wild oat control with soil-incorporated diclofop. Wild oat control with diclofop increased when a Tiffany sandy loam with 16% moisture (50% of field capacity) at the time of herbicide application, was watered to field capacity after 8 or 12 days delay, and control did not change with watering to field capacity at the time of herbicide application or when delayed 4 or 16 days. The movement of 14C-diclofop in soil columns was greater within coarse than fine textured soils and increased with water volumes applied, regardless of soil type. Further, the leachability of 14C-diclofop was two and a half times greater than that of 14C-trifluralin (α,α,α-trifluoro-2,6-dinitro-N,N-dipropyl-p-toluidine).

Concern over the consequences of increased weed seed inputs to the soil seed bank during the transition period from conventional to organic production is one obstacle to grower adoption of reduced input and nonchemical weed management strategies. An 11-yr study was established in southwest Montana to investigate the effect of a single pulse of wild oat seeds on subsequent seed bank dynamics. In 1993, wild oat seeds were sown at five densities (0, 20, 80, 320, and 800 seeds m−2) in eight wheat–small grain cropping systems that differed in the number of crops in rotation and fallow periods. Wild oat seed banks were measured each spring from 1994 to 2004 in half of the cropping systems and from 2001 to 2004 in all eight systems. In 1994, seed bank densities in response to the pulse were as much as 11 times higher than controls that received no seeds in 1993. By 1996, after mechanical fallowing of all cropping systems, wild oat seed bank densities were not significantly different from densities in control plots regardless of the size of the initial seed pulse and remained so through 2004. These data suggest that increases in wild oat seed inputs during the organic transition period will have relatively few long-term agronomic effects on the dynamics of wild oat seed banks in these systems. In addition, wild oat seed banks may be constrained by factors other than cropping sequence when herbicides are not used, such as possible density-dependent regulation as a result of increased soil pathogen attack and seed predation.
