The fine structure of the chloroplasts of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L., var. Tendercrop) was grossly altered by treatment with 5-amino-4-chloro-2-phenyl-3(2H)-pyridazinone (pyrazon) when plants were grown in a treated medium. Alterations occurred first at the leaf margins and preceded visual symptoms. Chloroplasts became spherical and swollen rather than discoid, clumped rather than peripherally arranged, and were totally devoid of starch. Grana formation was inhibited; the thylakoids became swollen and perforated, and they ultimately disintegrated. Concomitant with grana inhibition was the increase in size and number of lipid globules. Occasional breakage of the outer chloroplast membrane was observed. It is proposed that these changes result because pyrazon inhibits thylakoid structural protein formation.

To assess velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic.) seed populations and trends in continuous corn (Zea mays L.), six fields were selected and sampled in August and November of 1977 and 1978 at the 0- to 10- and 10- to 20-cm depths, and at the 20- to 30-cm depth in August of both years. The overall population mean was 51 million viable velvetleaf seeds/ha in the top 20 cm of soil. Means of individual fields ranged from 34 to 88 million seeds/ha. The population mean increased 13 million (28%) from 1977 to 1978. Individual fields had increases ranging from 8 million (14%) to 24 million (112%) seeds/ha. The seed population increased 16 million (37%) from August to November in these 2 yr, and 70% of the seeds were found in the top 10 cm of soil. The 20- to 30-cm depth contained 7% (3 million) of the seed extracted in the August sampling. A comparison of techniques for estimating the number of velvetleaf seeds in a soil sample showed that wet sieving was more efficient and accurate than were soaking and sieving, dry sieving, or direct incubation and germination. Seed immersion in water at 70 C for 5 min increased velvetleaf germination from 11% to 84%, compared to 52% for sulfuric acid, 48% for scarification, and 62% for seed-coat puncture. In the greenhouse, velvetleaf control with atrazine [2-chloro-4-(ethylamino)-6-(isopropylamino)-s-triazine] and metribuzin [4-amino-6-ten-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one] declined as the seed population increased.

Yield loss of hard red spring wheat due to competition from common milkweed was measured in grower fields in Minnesota. Wheat yield loss was measured using the area of influence and additive competitive methods. Simple linear regression of wheat yield and percentage wheat yield loss against distance from a common milkweed shoot gave r 2 values of 0.013 and 0.015, respectively, indicating limited value of the area of influence model for common milkweed in spring wheat. In an additive competition model, wheat yield was reduced 47% at the highest density of 12 common milkweed shoots m−2. Coefficients of determination for percentage yield loss regressed against common milkweed shoot density were 0.548, 0.547, and 0.529 for simple linear, nonlinear rectangular hyperbolic, and linear square root function models, respectively. Regression of percentage yield loss against common milkweed biomass resulted in r 2 values of 0.566, 0.645, and 0.658 for simple linear, nonlinear rectangular hyperbolic, and linear square root function models, respectively. Restrictions of common milkweed density due to factors other than competition limited yield loss response to the simple linear phase of both the nonlinear rectangular hyperbolic and the linear square root function models previously described.

Field and growth chamber experiments were conducted from 1983 to 1985 to determine the relationships between loss in plant productivity and plant residue-crop-weed density in no-till wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and to document chemical management and cultivar options for such a cropping system. Untilled stubble left on the soil at rates of 0.5 and 3 t/ha reduced wheat density and grain yield in continuous winter wheat. Stem densities of cheat (Bromus secalinus L. # BROSE) and downy brome (B. tectorum L. # BROTE) in mulched treatments averaged about 682, 679, and 38 stems/m2 in 1983, 1984, and 1985, respectively. In the nonmulched treatment, weed density and standing dry matter ranged from 5 to 30 stems/m2 and 2 to 6 g/m2, respectively. Removal of residues eliminated key habitat characteristics required for the establishment of Bromus spp. Preemergence and early postemergence applications of BAY SMY 1500 [4-amino-6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(ethylthio)-1,2,4-triazin-5(4H)-one] at 2 kg/ha controlled both species of Bromus in no-till wheat. The herbicide treatment slightly delayed maturity of 10 wheat cultivars, but control of cheat and downy brome allowed nine cultivars to attain their yield potential, improving grain yield over that of untreated plots. ‘Vona’ wheat did not tolerate the herbicide and was susceptible after emergence. BAY SMY 1500 widens the spectrum of weed management and wheat cultivar options for an annual conservation production system of winter wheat.

Fumigation of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ‘Sheyenne’) with low levels of O3 had little effect on root absorption, translocation, or conversion of diphenamid (N,N-dimethyl-2,2-diphenylacetamide) to water-soluble conjugates. However, the proportion of specific conjugates was markedly altered in O3-fumigated plants. Twenty-four hours after treatment, the predominant conjugates formed in nonfumigated and fumigated tomato were the β-glucoside (MDAG), and the β-gentiobioside (MDAGB), respectively, of N-hydroxymethyl-N-methyl-2,2-diphenylacetamide. The ratio MDAG:MDAGB was 8.2:1.0 in nonfumigated tissue and 0.6:1.0 in O3-fumigated tissue. This marked shift toward production of the more polar MDAGB was accompanied by a trend toward increased production of methanol-insoluble residues. A compound having limited stability was extracted from tomato; its probable structure was N-hydroxymethyl-N-methyl-2,2-diphenylacetamide (MODA). It is a postulated intermediate in the formation of MDAG and MDAGB from diphenamid.

We used laboratory and field feeding trials to investigate adult carabid beetle preferences for three brassicaceous weed species (rapeseed, wild mustard, and field pennycress) that are pests in canola. All carabid species preferred seeds of rapeseed most and those of field pennycress least and showed intermediate preference for wild mustard seeds. Beetles highly preferred imbibed seeds of all three weed species. Activity–density of carabids and mean weed seed removal were highly correlated in field plots of canola, with activity–density accounting for 67% of the observed variation in seed removal. Our study indicates that seed consumption among carabids is influenced by several factors, including weed species, physiological state of seeds, and carabid activity–density. Carabid seed predation is significant in canola agroecosystems; therefore, understanding these influences has implications for ecological weed management.

Weed management strategies differ in their ability to control weeds, and often have unique agroecological implications. To provide growers with an improved sense of trade-offs between weed control and ecological effects, we implemented several prominent organic weed management strategies in yellow onion in 2014 and 2015. Strategies included cultivation of weed seedlings during the early, weed-sensitive “critical period” of the crop; frequent cultivation events to ensure “zero seed rain”; and weed suppression with polyethylene or natural mulches. As expected, end-of-season weed biomass and weed seed production were greatest in the critical period system and nearly zero for the zero seed rain system. Weeds were also well controlled in natural mulch systems. Average onion yield per treatment was 50.7 Mg ha−1. In 2014, the critical period system and the polyethylene mulch systems demonstrated yield loss, likely due to weed competition and excessive soil temperature, respectively. Onion soluble solids content was also diminished in these systems in 2014, but bulb firmness was greatest in unmulched systems. Carabid beetles, earthworms, soil compaction, soil nitrate, and microbial biomass were affected by weed management strategy, with natural-mulched systems generally performing most favorably. However, these effects were not substantial enough to affect yield of a subsequent sweet corn crop grown in weed-free conditions. In contrast, sweet corn managed with only early-season cultivations demonstrated yield loss (P=0.004) in plots where the critical period treatment was implemented the prior year, indicating that weed competition resulting from abundant weed seed production in that system was the most influential legacy effect of the weed management strategies.

Absorption, translocation, and metabolism of the herbicide CGA 362622 were studied in cotton, spurred anoda, and smooth pigweed. 14C-labeled CGA 362622 was foliarly applied to cotton at the cotyledon to the one-leaf growth stage or at the two- to three-leaf growth stage and to spurred anoda and smooth pigweed at the four- to six-leaf growth stage. Differential absorption, translocation, and metabolism contributed to the differential tolerance of cotton, spurred anoda, and smooth pigweed to CGA 362622. Rapid translocation and a slow rate of metabolism appear to explain the susceptibility of smooth pigweed. Reduced absorption and translocation as well as rapid metabolism contribute to the CGA 362622 tolerance of cotton at the two growth stages. Limited translocation may explain the intermediate tolerance of spurred anoda to CGA 362622.

Italian ryegrass [Lolium perenne L. spp. multiflorum (Lam.) Husnot] is one of the most troublesome weeds worldwide. Lolium multiflorum is also a grass seed crop cultivated on 50,000 ha in Oregon, where both diploid and tetraploid cultivars are grown. For this work, we will refer to the species as L. multiflorum, since the common names annual ryegrass and Italian ryegrass both refer to the same species. A survey was conducted to understand the distribution and frequency of L. multiflorum and its susceptibility to selected herbicides used in its control. The herbicides selected were clethodim, glufosinate, glyphosate, mesosulfuron-methyl (mesosulfuron), paraquat, pinoxaden, pyroxsulam, quizalofop-P-ethyl (quizalofop), pronamide, flufenacet + metribuzin, and pyroxasulfone. The ploidy levels of the populations were also tested. A total of 150 fields were surveyed between 2017 and 2018, of which 75 (50%) had L. multiflorum present. Herbicide-resistant populations were documented in 88% of the 75 populations collected. The most frequent resistances were to acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), acetolactate synthase (ALS), 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) inhibitors, and combinations thereof. Multiple resistance and cross-resistance, found in 75% of the populations, were the most frequent patterns of resistance. Paraquat-resistant biotypes were confirmed in six orchard crop populations for the first time in Oregon. Herbicide resistance was spatially clustered, with most cases of resistance in the northern part of the surveyed area. Populations resistant to ALS and ACCase inhibitors were prevalent in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) fields. Multiple resistance was positively correlated with plant density. Tetraploid feral populations were identified, but no cases of herbicide resistance were documented. This is the first survey of herbicide resistance and ploidy diversity in L. multiflorum in western Oregon. Resistant populations were present across the surveyed area, indicating that the problem is widespread.

We used the process-oriented niche model CLIMEX to estimate the potential global distribution of serrated tussock under projected future climates. Serrated tussock is a drought-tolerant, wind- and human-dispersed grass of South American origin that has invaded pastures in Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and South Africa. The likely effect of climate change on its potential global distribution was assessed by applying six climate-change scenarios to a previously developed model. The projections of climatic suitability under the current climate revealed considerable scope for spread, with the most suitable areas occurring adjacent to existing naturalized populations in Australia, New Zealand, and Western Europe. Under future climates, projected to the 2080s, the land area suitable for serrated tussock contracts globally between 20 and 27%. Changes in projected potential area under the six scenarios were very similar in all geographical regions apart from North America and New Zealand, where the projections range from little change or contraction under the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Centre for Climate Research (MIROC) global climate models (GCMs) to expansion under the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) GCM. Elsewhere, contractions occur in Australia, Asia, South America, and Africa under all six future climate scenarios. By contrast, for Europe, the area climatically suitable for serrated tussock increases under all six scenarios (average increase 47%) through expansions into eastern European countries that are currently unsuitable and through increases in the suitable area in England, Ireland, and Denmark. Since pastoralism is a dominant land use in these regions of Europe, a prudent biosecurity strategy would be to contain the nascent foci of serrated tussock in southern France, along the west coast of Italy, and in the United Kingdom. This strategy could consist of a set of policies to limit human-assisted dispersal of the species' seeds and to reduce wind-borne spread through cultural control of the plant.

This paper extends previous observations on the interaction of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (amitrole) and riboflavin leading to the decomposition of amitrole to include the protective effect of amitrole on the photodestruction of flavins and flavoproteins. Photoactivation of radioactive amitrole in the presence of riboflavin causes the labeling of inert protein. Cupric ion, ascorbic acid, and oxygen can replace riboflavin and light in the destruction of amitrole and in the labeling of inert protein. The inhibition of fatty acid peroxidase previously reported by Castelfranco has been shown to be irreversible and to require the presence of a hydrogen peroxide generating system. The authors suggest a hypothesis for the mode of action of amitrole which depends upon the ability of this compound to interact with free radical generating systems, presumably by undergoing a one-electron oxidation.

Chemical control of weeds in the Hawaiian sugar industry began in 1913 when experiments with sodium arsenite were first conducted on the Island of Hawaii. Sodium arsenite and some sodium chlorate were the main herbicides in use until a concentrated, activated diesel emulsion (CADE) was developed in 1944. From that time on the chlorophenoxyacetic acids and their compounds, sodium trichloroacetate, sodium 2,2-dichloropropionate, and the substituted ureas and triazines have, in turn, been incorporated into use on plantations for weed control. At present, over a half million acres are sprayed each year at a cost of nearly seven million dollars for labor and material.

A review of recent work, especially, on the multitude of factors affecting the germination of weed seeds.

The toxicity of the substituted urea herbicides may persist in the soil for considerable periods following treatment. Consequently, they have been used extensively as pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicides and as soil sterilants. In the drier regions of the western states injury to cereals may occur when they are seeded in the fall following cotton which has been treated with the substituted ureas to control weeds. Because of the nature of these compounds and because of their rapid acceptance as herbicides, much interest has developed in relation to their breakdown in the soil.

Patterns of spread of 85 weed species alien to the northwestern U.S. were simulated using principal coordinate analysis on primarily herbaria-derived data. The primary pattern detected was a west-to-east migration of weeds. The point of introduction for most weeds following this pattern appeared to be near Portland, OR, an important shipping port in the past. An east-to-west migration represented a secondary pattern. The major cattle and wheat-cropping areas of east-central Montana were the apparent introduction points for weeds following this pattern. The grain and pulse region of eastern Washington represented the point of introduction of species following a third pattern of migration. These weeds subsequently spread southward to Utah and then laterally to the east and west. Historical weed migration patterns provide insight to probable points of origin and routes of currently spreading weeds as well as those that will spread in the future. Such insight may aid in the containment of future spreading weeds.

Corn (Zea mays L.) was grown in EPTC-(S-ethyl dipropylthiocarbamate) and butylate-(S-ethyl diisobutylthiocarbamate) treated soil at 33 and 15% moisture in growth chambers at 30 and 20 C. EPTC (6 and 18 ppm) and butylate (19 and 50 ppm) reduced corn growth more at 30 than at 20 C. The days before emergence of the corn coleoptile were the most critical time for thiocarbamate injury. When plants were grown at 30 C before emergence more injury occurred at 33% soil moisture than at 15% except with butylate at 19 ppm. At 20 C, however, plants grew as tall or taller at 33% soil moisture than at 15% except for butylate at 19 ppm. Addition of R-25788 (N,N-diallyl-2,2-dichloroacetamide) to EPTC and butylate increased by about 10 times the amount of herbicide required to injure corn. With R-25788 the toxicity of these two herbicides was not influenced greatly by either temperature or soil moisture.

Field experiments were conducted at Fayetteville, AR, in 1997, 1998, and 1999 to evaluate the degree of interspecific interference between drill-seeded, glyphosate-resistant soybean and hemp sesbania as influenced by soybean population, hemp sesbania density, and a single glyphosate application. Soybean was planted at 247,000, 430,000, and 618,000 seed ha−1 with early-season emergence of 217,000, 371,000, and 521,000 plants ha−1. Hemp sesbania densities were 0, 4, 10, and 16 plants m−2 in combination with 0 and 1.12 kg ai ha−1 glyphosate applied at the V4 to V6 soybean growth stage. Untreated hemp sesbania produced a maximum of 49 million seed ha−1 with 217,000 soybean ha−1, whereas seed production of glyphosate-treated hemp sesbania ranged from 2.8 to 0.6 million seed ha−1 with 217,000 and 521,000 soybean ha−1, respectively. Soybean seed yield was reduced 43% by 16 untreated hemp sesbania m−2, while glyphosate-treated hemp sesbania did not reduce seed yield. Averaged over all untreated hemp sesbania densities, soybean yield loss was reduced from 44 to 22% by increasing the soybean population from 217,000 to 521,000 plants ha−1. Because of the absence of soybean yield loss at 521,000 soybean ha−1, this density appears beneficial when using a single application of glyphosate to provide season-long weed control. However, a single glyphosate application in combination with a high soybean density did not completely prevent hemp sesbania seed production, and the seeding rate required to achieve a stand of 521,000 plants ha−1 would not be affordable; thus, alternate management methods targeting hemp sesbania must be employed to prevent an increase in the number of seed in the soil seedbank and to prevent a potential shift in the weed spectrum.

Herbicides currently registered for use near water have been ineffective for control of perennial pepperweed. Previous research has demonstrated that mowing followed by an application of glyphosate at 3.33 kg ae ha−1 to resprouting tissue can enhance the control of perennial pepperweed. The objectives of this study were to determine the mechanism(s) responsible for the enhanced effectiveness of glyphosate in combination with mowing. Mowing plants altered the leaf area distribution within the canopy. In mowed areas, the majority of leaf area was in the basal third of the canopy, whereas the bulk of the leaf area was in the top third of the canopy in unmowed plots. This change in plant architecture affected the deposition pattern of the spray solution. Unmowed plants retained 49 to 98% and 42 to 83% of a dye solution within the middle and top thirds of the canopy at the Colusa and Woodland sites, respectively, with only 1.9 to 6.0% dye deposited on the basal third of the canopy at both sites. In contrast, mowed plants had 18 to 34% and 26 to 70% of the dye retained in the basal third of the canopy at the Colusa and Woodland sites, respectively. Greenhouse studies showed that 14C-glyphosate applied to basal leaves of mowed plants translocated significantly more to belowground tissue. Unmowed plants accumulated 0.37% of the applied 14C-glyphosate in belowground tissue 48 h after labeling. In contrast, mowed plants accumulated 6.7% 14C-glyphosate in the belowground tissue. In field studies, estimates of basipetal seasonal translocation rates using total nonstructural carbohydrate pools of roots indicate that mowing did not change the translocation rate. However, the delay in application timing to allow plants to resprout appeared to synchronize applications with maximal translocation of carbohydrates to belowground structures. We hypothesize that the change in the canopy structure of perennial pepperweed after mowing results in fewer aboveground sinks and greater deposition of herbicide to basal leaves where it can preferentially be translocated to the root system. Furthermore, the delay between mowing and resprouting synchronized maximal belowground translocation rates with herbicide application timing. These factors all appear to be involved in the observed enhanced control of perennial pepperweed when combining mowing and glyphosate.

Soil columns and soil thin-layer chromatography were used to evaluate the mobility of napropamide [2-(α-naphthoxy)-N,N,-diethylpropionamide] in various soils. The surface-applied herbicide did not move deeper than approximately 6 cm in a Teller sandy loam soil after a water application of 10.2 cm. The Rf values for napropamide and two reference herbicides were in the order of fluometuron [1,1-dimethyl-3-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)urea] > napropamide > terbutryn [2-(tert-butylamino)-4-(ethylamino)-6-(methylthio)-s-triazine]. The mobility of each herbicide was reduced with an increase in clay and organic matter content. Carbon-14 ring labeled napropamide was used to determine the adsorption and desorption characteristics of the herbicide in various soils. The Rf values obtained with napropamide and each soil agreed with the adsorptive characteristics. Small applications of a muck soil to a sand (2%, w/w) significantly increased herbicide adsorption and decreased herbicide desorption.

Jubatagrass is one of the most invasive nonnative species along sensitive natural coastal sites of California. This study was designed to understand the biology of reproduction and seed longevity under field conditions. Jubatagrass can produce over 100,000 wind-dispersed seeds from a single inflorescence. Seeds are produced apomictically, and germination is directly related to seed size. Of the total seeds produced, only 20 to 30% were of ample size to readily germinate when exposed to light and under a temperature range similar to coastal environments. Seeds not exposed to light also germinated but at about 30% the level of light-exposed seeds. This suggests that exposed disturbed coastal sites with moderate temperatures have high potential for germination and establishment of jubatagrass. The percentages of germinable and viable seeds were not significantly different, indicating that jubatagrass does not have a primary dormancy. This was supported by field experiments demonstrating that seeds do not persist under natural conditions for more than 6 mo. These results indicate that an intensive 1-yr control program targeting established seedlings and mature plants should sufficiently manage existing populations. However, effective long-term management of jubatagrass must focus on anticipating environments susceptible to invasion, reducing new seed recruitment, and preventing subsequent seed germination and seedling establishment.
