Hemp sesbania [Sesbania exaltata (Raf.) Cory] was more tolerant to induced moisture stress than soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] with osmotic potentials of −4 and −2 bars, respectively, required to reduce germination. Hemp sesbania germinated at temperatures of 15 to 40 C with optimum germination occurring at 30 to 40 40 C. Seed dormancy was caused by impermeable seed coats. Acid scarification of 45 and 60 min and mechanical scarification 20 and 30 s gave maximum germination. Scarification increased water absorption. Light had no effect on germination. As oxygen content increased from 0 to 21%, germination of unscarified seed increased from 5 to 39%, but germination did not increase as oxygen increased from 21 to 100%. Hemp sesbania and soybean emerged from depths up to 12 cm with maximum emergence occurring at the 1- and 3-cm depths. Hemp sesbania emerged faster and in greater numbers at all depths than soybean.

Wild oat (Avena fatua L. ♯3 AVEFA) and Avena sterilis L. ♯ AVEST accessions from the United States were screened for tolerance to diallate [S-(2,3-dichloroallyl) diisopropylthiocarbamate], triallate [S-(2,3,3-trichloroallyl) diisopropylthiocarbamate], barban (4-chloro-2-butynyl m-chlorocarbanilate), diclofop {2-[4-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) phenoxy] propanoic acid}, difenzoquat (1,2-dimethyl-3,5-diphenyl-1H-pyrazolium), flamprop [N-benzoyl-N-(3-chloro-4-fluorophenyl)-DL-alanine], and MSMA (monosodium methanearsonate). Some accessions were tolerant to more than one herbicide but none were tolerant to all herbicides. Tolerance to a herbicide was not restricted to certain areas of origin of the accessions, and tolerant accessions occurred even in locations that had not been treated previously with the herbicide. In general, accessions from Southern California and Arizona were shorter, produced more tillers, and required the least number of days to panicle emergence. However, accessions from within individual areas were nearly as variable in these characteristics as the entire 1200 accessions. Tolerance of accessions to flamprop, difenzoquat, MSMA, and diclofop was not due to low leaf surface area, since the tolerant accessions usually had the most leaf surface area. All the accessions tolerant to difenzoquat, MSMA, and flamprop, and three of the four accessions tolerant to diclofop, tillered less than the susceptible accessions.

Grain sorghum (Sorghum vulgare Pers.) was sprayed in 1966 and 1967 with 2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine (atrazine), propylene glycol butyl ether ester of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), alkanolamine salts of 2,4-D, and nonphytotoxic petroleum oil (crop oil) or their combinations when plant heights were 2 to 4, 4 to 6, and 6 to 8 inches for grass weeds, broadleaf weeds, and sorghum, respectively. Pollen mother cells from all herbicide-treated sorghum revealed chromosomal aberrations, mostly aneuploidy and polyploidy, and aberration frequencies increased when herbicides were combined. Added chromosomes were not always of the basic number. Atrazine-treated plots produced highest grain yields, kernel numbers were reflected in grain yield (r = .96), and untreated plants flowered first.

A common sunflower population from Howard, SD (HSD) was previously determined to be cross-resistant to imazethapyr and chlorimuron-ethyl, both acetolactate synthase–inhibiting (ALS) herbicides. Experiments were conducted to determine if target-site polymorphisms could act as a mechanism of ALS-inhibitor herbicide resistance in the HSD common sunflower. Approximately 1,600 nucleotides were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and sequenced from putative ALS gene(s) in common sunflower and Jerusalem artichoke. In sunflower, two different amplification products were detected that differed by a nine-basepair deletion. This suggested the presence of at least two ALS genes in common sunflower that could contribute to the herbicide resistance phenotype. In addition, an Ala205 to Val205 substitution was observed in several clones from resistant common sunflower (amino acid position is relative to the full-length mouse-ear cress ALS protein). Previously documented mutations at this position in other species indicated that it might play a vital role in conferring resistance to one or more ALS-inhibitor herbicides.

Hairy fleabane [Conyza bonariensis (L.) Cronquist] is a problematic weed in Australian no-till cropping systems. Consequently, a study was conducted to examine the effect of temperature, light, salt stress, osmotic stress, burial depth, and sorghum crop residue on germination and emergence in two populations (C and W: collected from chick pea [Cicer arietinum L.] and wheat [Triticum aestivum L.] fields, respectively) of C. bonariensis. Both populations were able to germinate over a wide range of alternating day/night temperatures (15/5 to 35/25 C); however, the C population had optimum (and similar) germination over the range of 20/10 and 30/20 C, while the W population showed maximum germination at 25/15 C. A negative relationship was observed between osmotic potential and germination, with 31% and 14% germination of the C and W populations at −0.6 MPa, respectively. These observations suggest that population C was more tolerant to higher osmotic potentials than population W. Seeds of both populations germinated when exposed to a wide range of sodium chloride levels (NaCl, 0 to 200 mM); however, beyond 200 mM NaCl, no germination was observed in either population. Maximum germination of the C (70%) and W (41%) populations was observed on the soil surface with no emergence from a burial depth of 1 cm. The application of sorghum residue at an amount of 6,000 kg ha−1 reduced emergence of the C and W populations by 55% and 58%, respectively, compared with the no-residue treatment. Knowledge gained from this study suggests that the following strategies could be used for more efficacious management of C. bonariensis: (1) a shallow-tillage operation to bury weed seeds in conventional tillage systems, and (2) retention of sorghum residue on the soil surface in no-till systems.

A linear programming model was used to determine which crop rotations and weed management systems result in the highest net farm income for each of three farm sizes (120, 240, and 480 hectares) under alternative tillage systems. Test plot data for the years 1981 through 1988 from the Purdue University Agronomy Farm, which has highly productive, well-drained soils, were analyzed. Net incomes for no-till tillage systems on all farms in the model were consistently and significantly lower than incomes for moldboard and chisel plow tillage systems due to slightly lower yields and substantially higher herbicide costs. Generally, net farm incomes were slightly higher with a moldboard plow versus chisel plow tillage system. Also, as farm size increased, per hectare net incomes increased. About 80% of the time under moldboard or chisel plow tillage systems, the model chose as optimal the lowest of three herbicide application rates. A corn/soybean rotation was chosen as optimal on 56% of the farm area analyzed, versus 25% for continuous corn and 13% for a corn/soybean/wheat rotation.

The goal of a mechanistic model is to determine the outcome of weed–crop interference. An understanding of weed phenology is essential for construction of such models because phenological development is a major factor determining the outcome of weed–crop competition. Growth cabinet studies were conducted to determine the influence of temperature and photoperiod on the phenological development of common lambsquarters. Common lambsquarters is a short-day species adapted to a temperature range of 6.5 to 44.5 C. Phenological development of common lambsquarters grown under a constant temperature of 20 C and an 8-h photoperiod was described in terms of biological days (Bd: chronological days at the optimum photoperiod and temperature). Three development phases of common lambsquarters were described as (1) a juvenile phase of 6.3 Bd, (2) a photoperiod-sensitive inductive phase of 8.2 Bd, and (3) a photoperiod-sensitive postinductive phase of 34.4 Bd. The photoperiod sensitivity of rate of development did not differ among phases of development across the life cycle. Interpretation of constant sensitivity to photoperiod will simplify simulation of weed phenology in mechanistic models.

The potential for yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L. var. leptostachyus Boeck. # CYPES) regrowth was reduced by increasing plant age and by glyphosate [N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine] and oxyfluorfen [2-chloro-1-(3-ethoxy-4-nitrophenoxy)-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzene]. Of the amount of glyphosate transported to underground parts, most was found in the tubers, with immature rhizomes, roots, and tubers having 2 to 3 times higher concentrations than comparable mature tissues. Addition of unlabeled oxyfluorfen as a tank mixture with glyphosate increased absorption and translocation, mainly into leaves and new tubers, of radioactivity from 14C-glyphosate in 30-day-old plants. In contrast to the younger plants, the addition of oxyfluorfen decreased 14C-glyphosate detected in 60-day-old plants. The greater effectiveness of glyphosate when applied with oxyfluorfen on yellow nutsedge at the early growth stage has important implications in the field because the tuberization process must be stopped early in the development of the plant for successful control.

Weeds that respond more to nitrogen fertilizer than crops may be more competitive under high nitrogen (N) conditions. Therefore, understanding the effects of nitrogen on crop and weed growth and competition is critical. Field experiments were conducted at two locations in 1999 and 2000 to determine the influence of varying levels of N addition on corn and velvetleaf height, leaf area, biomass accumulation, and yield. Nitrogen addition increased corn and velvetleaf height by a maximum of 15 and 68%, respectively. N addition increased corn and velvetleaf maximum leaf area index (LAI) by up to 51 and 90%. Corn and velvetleaf maximum biomass increased by up to 68 and 89% with N addition. Competition from corn had the greatest effect on velvetleaf growth, reducing its biomass by up to 90% compared with monoculture velvetleaf. Corn response to N addition was less than that of velvetleaf, indicating that velvetleaf may be most competitive at high levels of nitrogen and least competitive when nitrogen levels are low. Corn yield declined with increasing velvetleaf interference at all levels of N addition. However, corn yield loss due to velvetleaf interference was similar across N treatments except in one site–year, where yield loss increased with increasing N addition. Corn yield loss due to velvetleaf interference may increase with increasing N supply when velvetleaf emergence and early season growth are similar to that of corn.

Today, the aim of weed management is to keep the weed community at an acceptable level rather than to keep the crop totally free of weeds. Satisfactory control of weeds may often be obtained when herbicides are used at lower doses than normally recommended. To facilitate the decision of what is an adequate dose in a specific field, the farmer needs support. In 1988 and 1989, a total of 10 field trials in spring cereals were initiated in Sweden with the objective of studying long-term effects of herbicide application according to recommendations from guidelines: the guidelines were developed at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and consisted of printed cards designed for in-field use. Treatments also included a full and a half dose and an untreated control. As an average over the experimental time, i.e., until 1997, the dose used in the guideline treatment varied at different sites between 20 and 70% of a full dose. In 1998, i.e., 1 yr after the last herbicide application, the plant densities of annual weeds in the guideline treatment, the half and the full doses were 51, 57, and 67% lower, respectively, than in the untreated control when averaged over sites. At two and four sites, the half and full doses resulted in significantly lower weed densities than where guidelines had been used. Compared with the control, the full and half doses increased the proportion of difficult-to-control weed species significantly at five and four sites by 21 and 24%, respectively. In the guideline treatment the proportion of difficult-to-control weeds was increased at one site. In 1998, weed counts were higher where guidelines had been used than in the full dose for common lambsquarters and common chickweed at three sites each and for wallflower mustard, catchweed bedstraw, field violet, Galeopsis spp., and Lamium spp. at one site each. At three sites, no significant treatment effects on crop yields were found, whereas yields at the remaining seven sites were higher where guidelines had been used than in other treatments in several years. It is concluded that application of dose rates according to recommendations from guidelines can be a fruitful way to reduce herbicide use.

Determining the nature of root and shoot competition can elucidate the competitive ability of an invasive species and direct management strategies. In a set of competition experiments, artichoke thistle (Cynara cardunculus), an exotic invasive perennial forb, was subjected to full or shoot competition with four species: black mustard (Brassica nigra), an exotic annual forb; ripgut grass (Bromus diandrus), an exotic annual grass; purple needle-grass (Nassella pulchra), a native perennial grass; and itself. For shoot competition, a smaller pot nested in a larger experimental pot sequestered the target plant root system. A bare ground invasion experiment, in which all plants were transplanted on the same date, and a community invasion experiment, in which competitor species were planted 1 mo before targets, were conducted. In the bare ground invasion experiment, target plant size was reduced (P ≤ 0.05) when exposed to full competition with the exotic species, but not purple needle-grass. Effects on target plants included reductions in height, number of leaves, rosette diameter, and shoot and leaf dry weight. In the community invasion experiment, full competition with all species reduced target plant growth (P ≤ 0.05). Shoot competition was more important when all species were planted synchronously, whereas root competition was more important when target plant establishment was delayed. In a separate experiment, artichoke thistle was grown under four light levels simulating field conditions under canopies of the same competitors. Midday carbon assimilation decreased linearly with increased shade, indicating the likely effects of shoot competition on artichoke thistle. Results indicated that exotic species are more competitive than native purple needle-grass against artichoke thistle and that restoration directly to native grassland after artichoke thistle removal might be difficult. However, artichoke thistle seedling growth is reduced by root competition from grasses that emerge earlier, indicating that early season management of grasslands to delay artichoke thistle establishment might provide effective control.

Palmer amaranth has greatly disrupted agricultural practices in the United States with its rapid growth and rapid evolution of herbicide resistance. This weed species is now suspected in Argentina. To document whether the suspected plant populations are indeed Palmer amaranth, molecular comparisons to known standards were conducted. Additionally, these same plant populations were screened for possible herbicide resistance to several acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicides. Sequencing data confirmed that suspected populations (A2, A3, A4) were indeed Palmer amaranth. Another population (A1) was tested to determine whether hybridization had occurred between Palmer amaranth and mucronate amaranth the native amaranth species of the region. Tests confirmed that no hybridization had occurred and that A1 was simply a unique phenotype of mucronate amaranth. Each population was screened for resistance to imazapic, nicosulfuron, and diclosulam. All Palmer amaranth populations from Argentina were shown to be resistant to at least one ALS-inhibiting herbicide. The populations were then subjected to further testing to identify the mutation responsible for the observed ALS resistance. All mucronate amaranth populations exhibited a mutation previously documented to confer ALS resistance (S653N). No known resistance-conferring mutations were found in Palmer amaranth.

Preplant or preemergence application of 2-chloro-2′, 6′-diethyl-N-(methoxymethyl) acetanilide (alachlor) at 3.36 or 4.48 kg/ha effectively controlled yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) in field and greenhouse studies. Depth of tubers in the soil did not affect response to alachlor. Alachlor at 3.36 kg/ha only controlled yellow nutsedge effectively in soils with less than 6% organic matter. Alachlor at 3.7 × 10-6 M and 1.8 × 10-4 M inhibited growth and killed newly emerging shoots in petri dish cultures. However, alachlor did not inhibit sprouting of yellow nutsedge tubers.

Several species of Potamogeton and Myriophyllum from New Jersey were collected and analyzed for 11 elements. Wide variations were observed in the inorganic composition of the plants, both within species and among species. In some instances, there appeared to be a relationship between the content of a specific element in a plant sample and the content of that element in the water in which the plants were growing. The nitrogen content of the plants was sufficiently high so that no extra nitrogen would be required to prepare composts from them.

Barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv. #4 ECHCG] and pigweeds (mixture of Amaranthus retroflexus L. # AMARE and A. powellii S. Wats. # AMAPO) seeded separately with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) in mid-August suppressed alfalfa severely before frost killed them in October and November. Some alfalfa was killed, and yield of alfalfa forage was reduced in each of three harvests the following year. These weeds did not harm alfalfa seeded in mid-September. Downy brome (Bromus tectorum L. # BROTE) and tumble mustard (Sisymbrium altissimum L. # SSYAL) suppressed alfalfa seeded in August and September. They reduced alfalfa stands and reduced yield of alfalfa forage in each of three harvests the following year. Alfalfa seeded August 27 and allowed to compete with a mixture of these species for various periods was injured most by weeds that emerged with the alfalfa and remained uncontrolled until forage harvest in May. These weeds did not reduce alfalfa yields if removed by 36 days after alfalfa emergence. Thereafter, yield decreased as the period of weed interference increased. Interference was most damaging in early spring, when growth of winter annual weeds was rapid and vigorous. Weeds seeded 65 or more days after alfalfa emergence did not reduce alfalfa yields but sometimes produced enough biomass to reduce the quality of the first-cutting alfalfa hay.

Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to compare root development of jointed goatgrass to winter wheat. Time of seminal root development in jointed goatgrass was similar to that of winter wheat and to root development predicted by a model. The only exception was the epiblast node roots (−1A and −1B), which developed approximately 1 phyllochron later in jointed goatgrass than in winter wheat. At crown nodes, A and B roots developed later in jointed goatgrass than in winter wheat, but development of X and Y roots at these nodes was similar for both species. First-order branching at a given root axis in jointed goatgrass roots began approximately 1 phyllochron after development of that axis, compared to 2.5 phyllochrons for winter wheat and the model. Second- and third-order branching of jointed goatgrass roots began 1 and 0.5 phyllochrons earlier than the respective branching of winter wheat roots. Leaf and tiller development followed the same pattern with time for both species. Maximum distance between crown roots was 1.5 to 3 times greater in winter wheat than in jointed goatgrass. Root length density at the 0- to 10-cm depth was less for jointed goatgrass than for winter wheat, but there were no differences at greater depths. The frequency of branching of first-order laterals was greater for jointed goatgrass than for winter wheat. In the field, the relationship of jointed goatgrass shoot development to accumulated growing degree-days was linear (R2 = 0.97), with a slope and y-intercept similar to winter wheat (R2 = 0.95). These data, showing slight differences in root growth and development between jointed goatgrass and winter wheat, may be used in predictive modeling to better understand the biology and ecology of each species, and may be used in conjunction with other models to establish weed threshold levels and improve selective placement of fertilizers and herbicides to benefit crop development.

Witchweed, [Striga asiatica (L.) Kuntze5 STRLU], an important parasitic weed throughout much of the old world, occurs as a recent (30 yr) introduction in a limited region in North and South Carolina. Reproduction in this population has been shown to occur primarily through self-pollination of flowers. Genetic diversity in two populations from this region was assessed, utilizing starch gel electrophoresis and staining of enzymes. An average of 64 individuals was observed to be monomorphic at an estimated minimum of 32 genetic loci coding 18 enzyme systems. This lack of polymorphism is attributable to the probable founding of the population by one or a few individuals coupled with the predominantly autogamous breeding system.

Greenhouse pot experiments were conducted to study the effect of various levels of nitrogen, applied as ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and ammonium sulfate [(NH4)2SO4], on hemp broomrape (Orobanche ramosa L.) infestation on tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. ‘Jordan 1’) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ‘Caludia Raf’). Infestation of tobacco and tomato by hemp broomrape was drastically reduced as higher levels of both fertilizers were applied. However, the dry weights of roots and shoots of both crop plants, as well as tomato yield, were reduced when NH4NO3 was applied at 50 g/pot, and when (NH4)2SO4 was applied at higher than 60 g/pot. In a separate pot experiment in the field, hemp broomrape infestation on tomato was drastically reduced, and tomato shoot dry weight, as well as tomato yield, were increased when (NH4)2SO4 was applied at higher than 40 g/pot as 20-g increments repeated at 10-day intervals compared to those of the control.

A tandem mass spectrometric procedure was developed to detect sesbanimide A and its isomers in plant materials. Analysis of seed extracts from 10 Sesbania species using this procedure readily detected sesbanimides in Drummond rattlebush, rattlebush, and bagpod sesbania. The toxic sesbanimides were not detected in hemp sesbania or in other species with no known history of animal toxicity.
