Several studies document rudimentary color vision under dim illumination. Here, hue perceptions of paper color samples were determined for a wide range of light levels, including very low light levels where rods alone mediate vision. The appearances of 24 paper color samples from the OSA Uniform Color Scales were gauged under successively dimmer illuminations from 10–0.0003 Lux. Triads of samples were chosen representing each of eight basic color categories; red, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and gray. Samples within each triad varied in lightness. Observers sorted samples into groups that they could categorize with specific color names. Above 0.32 Lux, observers sorted the samples into the originally chosen color groups with few exceptions. For 0.1–0.01 Lux, the red and orange samples were usually correctly identified as either red or orange. The remaining samples tended to be grouped into two categories, associated with the scotopic sample reflectance. The lowest reflectance samples were below threshold and were named black. The higher reflectance group was named predominately as green or blue-green (three observers; the fourth observer used blue or achromatic). At the three dimmest levels (≤ 0.0032 Lux) there continued to be conspicuous color percepts. Color categories were reliably assigned based on relative sample scotopic lightness. Of the samples above threshold, those with lower reflectance were classified as red or orange (all observers) and the higher reflectance samples as green or blue-green (three observers) or achromatic or blue (the fourth observer). Rods and L-cones presumably mediated color percepts at the intermediate light levels used in the study. At the three lowest light levels there were distinct color appearances mediated exclusively by rods. We speculate that at these light levels the visual system estimates probable colors based on prior natural experience.

Dark-adapted rods in the area surrounding a luminance-modulated field can suppress flicker detection. However, the characteristics of the interaction between rods and each of the cone types are unclear. To address this issue, the effect that dark-adapted rods have on specific classes of receptoral and postreceptoral signals was determined by measuring the critical fusion frequencies (CFF) for receptoral L-, M-, and S-cone and postreceptoral luminance ([L+M+S] and [L+M+S+Rod]) and chromatic ([L/(L+M)]) signals in the presence of different levels of surrounding rod activity. Stimuli were generated with a two-channel photostimulator that has four primaries for a central field and four primaries for the surround, allowing independent control of rod and cone excitation. Measurements were made either with adaptation to the stimulus field after dark adaptation or during a brief period following light adaptation. The results show that dark-adapted rods maximally suppressed the CFF by ∼6 Hz for L-cone, M-cone, and luminance modulation. Dark-adapted rods, however, did not significantly alter the S-cone CFF. The [L/(L+M)] postreceptoral CFF was slightly suppressed at higher surround illuminances, that is, higher than surround luminances resulting in suppression for L-cone, M-cone, or luminance modulation. We conclude that rod-cone interactions in flicker detection occurred strongly in the magnocellular pathway.

Green, blue and short-wavelength-red rod hue biases are strongest and most reliable with large, dimly-mesopic, extra-foveal stimuli but tend to diminish when stimuli are confined to a small area of the central fovea. This study explores how the stimulation of foveal and extra-foveal areas interact in determining rod hue biases, and whether large stimuli are as effective for revealing rod hue biases when foveally centered as when eccentrically centered. We assessed rod influence by measuring wavelengths of unique green and unique yellow (with 1-s duration, 1 log scot td stimuli and a staircase procedure) under bleached and dark-adapted conditions. We measured unique hues with foveally centered 2°- and 7.4°-diameter disks, a 7.4° (outer) × 2° (inner) diameter annulus, and a 7°-eccentric, 7.4°-diameter disk. The rod green bias (shift of unique yellow locus) was typically <10 nm and remained fairly constant across spatial configurations, indicating no special foveal influence. The rod blue bias (shift of unique green) varied more among observers and spatial configurations, reaching up to 47 nm. However, stimuli covering the fovea typically produced no rod blue bias. Thus, the present results add differences in spatial dependence (i.e., foveal/extra-foveal interaction) between green and blue rod biases to previously demonstrated differences (e.g., differences in amount of light level dependence, in time course and in the spectral range influenced by each bias).

A successive, asymmetric color-matching paradigm was used to investigate the link between cone contrast and the stability of perceived colors. We measured the perceived color shifts of 10 Munsell samples, induced by test illuminant A, simulated in u′v′ color space. The capacity of the visual system to resist these shifts, otherwise known as color constancy, is measured in terms of the Brunswik ratio, BR. Cone contrasts are calculated with respect to either the physical or perceived background. Subjective cone contrasts show a better fit to the von Kries law than those based on the physical background. Complete cone adaptation occurs when color constancy is high. However we show conditions where cone adaptation seems complete but color constancy is poor.

An earlier modeling study of the effect of changes in macular pigment optical density (MPOD) on a wide range of surface colors is re-examined. That study reported changes in local chromaticity variance and in color spacing, some of which were incompatible with tritan-like confusions in normals associated with high-simulated MPOD. This disagreement might have arisen through the use of the von Kries correction for adaptation. The analysis is repeated, using 1782 reflectance spectra of natural and man-made colors. These colors are segregated into an array of 25 equally populated cells in an analogue of the MacLeod-Boynton cone excitation diagram. Removing the von Kries correction restores compatibility with other experimental data. Differences between the results for normal and anomalous trichromats, noted in the earlier study, are confirmed. An analysis of local chromaticity variance across color space indicates the presence of systematic patterns. The earlier study also reported differences in results across observer types (for example, between normals and protanomals) and this is addressed here by utilizing fundamentals defined by a variable photopigment template. Chromaticities are computed for the same 1782 reflectance spectra for normals and for a set of protanomals (for whom the anomalous L pigment is shifted between the normal L and M spectral locations). Colors are segregated into an array of 100 cells in an analogue of the MacLeod-Boynton cone excitation diagram. Changes in chromaticity variance with MPOD for these cells are mapped for normals and protanomals. Variance along the L/(L + M) axis is sensitive to the number of cells used for segmentation. It also increases with MPOD for normal observers but this trend reverses as the wavelength of maximum sensitivity of the L cone shifts towards shorter wavelengths (protanomalous locations).

Simple color-difference formulae and pictorial images have traditionally been used to estimate the visual impact of color errors introduced by image-reproduction processes. But the limited gamut of RGB cameras constrains such analyses, particularly of natural scenes. The purpose of this work was to estimate visual sensitivity to color errors introduced deliberately into pictures synthesized from hyperspectral images of natural scenes without gamut constraints and to compare discrimination thresholds expressed in CIELAB and S-CIELAB color spaces. From each original image, a set of approximate images with variable color errors were generated and displayed on a calibrated RGB color monitor. The threshold for perceptibility of the errors was determined in a paired-comparison experiment. In agreement with previous studies, it was found that discrimination between original and approximate images needed on average a CIELAB color difference ΔEab* of about 2.2. Although a large variation of performance across the nine images tested was found when errors were expressed in CIELAB units, little variation was obtained when they were expressed in S-CIELAB units.

Is neural binding of color and form required for perception of a unified colored object? Individual cells selectively tuned to both color and orientation are proposed to moot the binding problem. This study reveals perceptual misbinding of color, thereby revealing separate neural representations of color and form followed by a subsequent binding process. Low luminance-contrast, rivalrous chromatic gratings were presented dichoptically. Each grating had alternating chromatic and gray stripes (e.g., red/gray in the left eye, green/gray in the right eye). Observers viewed the two rivalrous, 2 cpd gratings for 1 min. The duration of exclusive visibility was measured for four percepts: left-eye stimulus, right-eye stimulus, fusion of the two colors, or a two-color grating (e.g. a red/green grating). The percept of a two-color grating (misbinding) was observed with Michelson luminance contrast in the grating up to 20%. In general, for a given level of luminance contrast either misbinding (low luminance contrast) or color mixture (high luminance contrast) was observed, but not both of them. The perceived two-color gratings show that two rivalrous chromaticities are both represented neurally when color and form are combined to give a unified percept. “Resolution” of competing chromatic signals from the two eyes is not restricted to color dominance and color mixture. The transition from misbinding to color mixture by increasing luminance contrast shows that luminance edges have an important role in correct localization of color.

This study investigated chromatic induction from inhomogeneous background patterns. Previous work showed that a background pattern detected by only S cones induced strong color shifts in a nearby test area (Monnier & Shevell, 2003). In that work, the S-cone patterns were composed with constant L- and M-cone stimulation over the entire background; in terms of L and M cones, therefore, the background was uniform. S-cone stimulation was varied over space to produce S-cone-isolated background patterns. These S-cone patterns, however, established spatial structure (the pattern) at both the receptoral level (S-cone stimulation) and the postreceptoral level (S/(L+M)). Here, these two levels of pattern representation were unconfounded to determine whether color shifts induced by S-cone patterns were due to spatial structure within an S-cone-specific neural pathway versus a pathway that combines responses from S cones and other cone types (e.g. S/(L+M)). The results showed that the induced color shifts were mediated by signals within a pathway that combines responses from multiple cone types. These results are consistent with a +s/−s spatially antagonistic neural receptive field, which is found in some neurons in V1 and V2.

Color induction was measured using a matching method for two spatial patterns, each composed of double contours. In one pattern (the standard), the contours had sharp edges to induce the Watercolor Effect (WCE); in the other, the two contours had a spatial taper so that the overall profile produced a sawtooth edge, or ramped stimulus. These patterns were chosen based on our previous study demonstrating that the strength of the chromatic WCE depends on a luminance difference between the two contours. Low-pass chromatic mechanisms, unlike bandpass luminance mechanisms, may be expected to be insensitive to the difference between the two spatial profiles. The strength of the watercolor spreading was similar for the two patterns at narrow widths of the contour possibly because of chromatic aberration, but with wider contours, the standard stimulus produced stronger assimilation than the ramped stimulus. This research suggests that luminance-dependent chromatic mechanisms mediate the WCE and that these mechanisms are sensitive to differences in the two spatial profiles of the pattern contours only when they are wide.

The surface-mode property of “blackness” is induced by simultaneous contrast with an adjacent, more luminant surround. As numerous studies have shown, the degree of blackness induced within an achromatic test field is a function of the relative luminance of the adjacent chromatic inducing field, but not of its hue. But in the converse case of chromatic test fields, susceptibility to blackening has been reported to vary with wavelength. The present study investigates this possibility, that some wavelengths are more susceptible. We also questioned whether “white” and “black” sensory components function as opposites in blackness appearance. We recorded the appearance of a central monochromatic test field of constant luminance (10 cd/m2), with wavelength ranging across the visible spectrum, while a broadband white annulus was set to six luminance levels ranging across three log steps. Three color-normal observers followed a color-naming technique. All six opponent-hue names and their combinations were response options; blackness and whiteness in the test field could therefore be reported independently. Of primary interest were the achromatic responses. When represented within a multidimensional space, these revealed the “white-to-black” dimension but in addition a quality (dimension) of “desaturation.” Compared against chromatic properties of the test field, the results provide evidence that blackness is a function of inducing field brightness (not luminance). This result is in accord with observations made by Shinomori et al. (1997) using a different procedure. We conclude that blackness induction occurs at a stage of visual processing subsequent to the origin of the brightness signal from a combination of opponent-process channels.

The discoloration illusion, a new visual phenomenon, is described. This phenomenon originates from the juxtaposition of eight chromatic parallel contours on a white background, creating a luminance gradient and enclosing a light red region. Under these conditions, the inner region appears white: the light red discolors and appears white with both surface color and luminous qualities. In two experiments, the discoloration illusion was (i) compared with the coloration effect of the watercolor illusion, obtained when the number of adjacent contours was reduced to at least two, and (ii) tested under several conditions useful for understanding the roles of the luminance gradient profile. The results suggest that discoloration is not a lightness illusion and does not depend on simultaneous contrast or on achromatic mechanisms, but more likely on chromatic mechanisms that, through the luminance chromatic gradient, provide cues about the interactions of light and surface and model the volume by depicting lights and shades. The discoloration illusion suggests a possible neural scenario where multiple juxtaposed contours may stimulate neurons, selective for different asymmetric luminance profiles and signaling not only the unilateral belongingness of the boundaries and the coloration effect but also the volumetric and the illumination effects.

We tested whether motion and configural complexity affect perceived transparency. A series of five coherent chromatic transformations in color space was applied across a figure: translation, convergence, shear, divergence and rotation. The stimuli consisted of a bipartite or a checkerboard configuration (10 × 10°), with a central static or moving overlay (5 × 5°). Three different luminance conditions (the plane of chromatic transformation oriented toward higher, lower, or equal luminances) were also tested for each of three modulation depths. For each stimulus, the observer judged whether the overlay appeared transparent or not. The main results indicated an interaction between the type of chromatic transformation and stimulus motion and complexity. For example, convergences are judged to appear transparent significantly more often when motion is added for bipartite configurations, or when they are generated in a checkerboard configuration. Surprisingly, shears that have been reported to appear opaque, are more frequently reported to appear transparent with short vector lengths and when combined with motion. Other transformations are also affected by motion, although the effectiveness of figural complexity on transparency seems to depend on both the type of color shifts and the presence of motion. The results indicate that adding motion and stimulus complexity are not necessarily neutral with respect to the chromatic shifts evoking transparency. Thus, studies that have used motion to enhance transparency may yield different results about the color shifts supporting transparency perception from those that did not. The same might be supposed for stimulus complexity under some conditions.

Perception of different color contrast stimuli was studied in the presence of light scattering: in a fog chamber in Clermont-Ferrand and in laboratory conditions where light scattering of similar levels was obtained, using different light scattering eye occluders. Blue (shortest wavelength) light is scattered in fog to the greatest extent, causing deterioration of vision quality especially for the monochromatic blue stimuli. However, for the color stimuli presented on a white background, visual acuity in fog for blue Landolt-C optotypes was higher than for red and green optotypes on the white background. The luminance of color Landolt-C optotypes presented on a LCD screen was chosen corresponding to the blue, green, and red color contributions in achromatic white stimuli (computer digital R, G, or B values for chromatic stimuli equal to RGB values in the achromatic white background) that results in the greatest luminance contrast for the white–blue stimuli, thus advancing the visual acuity for the white-blue stimuli. Besides such blue stimuli on the white background are displayed with a uniform, spatially unmodulated distribution of the screen blue phosphor emission over the entire area of the screen including the stimulus C optotype area. It follows that scattering, which has the greatest effect on the blue component of screen luminance, has the least effect on the perception of white–blue stimuli.

Assigning a basic color name to an object and rating the amount of a particular hue is a fundamental visual capability. Traditional color scaling studies have used increment flashes or isoluminant stimuli of a homogeneous color. Natural objects, however, do not contain a single color but are characterized by a distribution of different chromatic hues. Here we study color scaling using photographs of natural fruit objects. Stimuli were either homogeneous spots, digital photographs of fruit objects (e.g., banana), or outline shapes of the fruit objects. Stimuli were displayed on a CRT monitor on a homogeneous white background; its luminance was varied above and below the medium gray. The chromaticity of the stimuli was varied in 36 equally spaced chromatic directions in the isoluminant plane of the Derrington-Krauskopf-Lennie (DKL) color space. For each stimuli, subjects rated the amount of red, green, blue, and yellow in the stimulus on a scale from 0–8. In agreement with earlier studies we found that the positions of the peak ratings for each color do not coincide with the cardinal axis of DKL color space and are largely invariant under changes of the background luminance. For the average rating we found a dependence on background luminance for all colors: yellow ratings increase with darker backgrounds, whereas ratings for the other colors, in particular green, decrease. For the fruit objects, we found a selective increase in the average color rating for the natural fruit color. For example, the average rating for yellow was 1.7 times higher for the banana images compared to disc stimuli. No such selective increase was found for outline shapes. We conclude that the distribution of hues in natural objects with a characteristic object color can have a profound effect on color scaling and color appearance.

The PC pathway conveys both chromatic and achromatic information, with PC neurons being more responsive to chromatic (L−M) than to achromatic (L+M) stimuli. In considering the evolution of color vision, it has been suggested that the dynamic range of chromatic PC-pathway processing is tuned to the chromatic content of the natural environment. Anomalous trichromats, with reduced separation of their L- and M-cone spectral sensitivities, have diminished chromatic input to PC-pathway cells. Dichromats, with absent L or M cones, should have no chromatic input to PC-pathway cells. Therefore, the PC-pathway dynamic range of color defectives should be released from any constraint imposed by the chromatic environment. Here we ask whether this results in compensatory enhancement of achromatic PC-pathway processing in color defectives. This study employed a psychophysical method designed to isolate PC-pathway processing using achromatic stimuli. In a pulsed-pedestal condition, a four-square stimulus array appeared within a uniform surround. During a trial, one of the test squares differed from the other three, and the observer's task was to choose the square that was different. A four-alternative, forced-choice method was used to determine thresholds as a function of the contrast of the four-square array to the surround. Seven color defective and four normal observers participated. Results showed no systematic differences between normals and color defectives. There was no enhancement of achromatic processing as compensation for reduced chromatic processing in the PC-pathway system in color defectives. From physiological recordings, PC-pathway achromatic contrast gains of dichromatic and trichromatic New World primates and trichromatic Old World macaques have also been shown to be similar to each other. Our study and the animal studies imply that PC-pathway contrast gain parameters were regulated by factors other than the environmental chromaticity gamut, and may have arisen in a nontrichromatic common ancestor to both Old and New World primates.

It would be informative to have an electrophysiological method to study, in an objective way, the effects of mercury exposure and other neurotoxics on human color vision performance. The purpose of the present work was to study human color discrimination by measuring chromatic difference thresholds with visual evoked potential (VEP). Six young normal trichromats (24 ± 1 years old) and one deutan (26 years old) were tested. The stimuli consisted of sinusoidal isoluminant chromatic gratings made from chromaticity pairs located along four different color directions centered on two reference points. Heterochromatic flicker photometry (HFP) protocol was used to obtain the isoluminance condition for every subject and for all chromaticity pairs. Spatial frequency was 2 cycles/deg. Presentation mode comprised onset (300 ms)/offset (700 ms) periods. As previously described, we found a negative deflection in the VEP which was related to the chromatic difference: as chromatic difference increased, amplitude increased and latency decreased. VEP response amplitude was plotted against distance in the CIE 1976 color space between the grating chromaticities and fitted with a regression line. We found color thresholds by extrapolating the fitting to null amplitude values. The thresholds were plotted in the CIE 1976 color space as MacAdam ellipses. In normal trichromats the ellipses had small size, low ellipticity, and were vertically oriented. In the deutan subject, the ellipses had large size, high ellipticity, and were oriented towards the deutan copunctal locus. The VEP thresholds were similar to those obtained using grating stimuli and psychophysical procedures, however smaller than those obtained using pseudoisochromatic stimuli (Mollon-Reffin method). We concluded that transient VEP amplitude as a function of contrast can be reliably used in objective studies of chromatic discrimination performance in normal and altered human subjects.

Deuteranomalous trichromacy, which affects medium-wavelength-sensitive cones, is more common than protanomalous trichromacy, which affects long-wavelength-sensitive cones. The aim of the present work was to test the extent to which these two kinds of anomalous trichromacy affect surface-color judgments in the natural world. Simulations of 18 natural scenes under different daylight illuminants were presented on a high-resolution color monitor to 7 deuteranomalous, 7 protanomalous, and 12 normal trichromatic observers, who had to discriminate between reflectance and illuminant changes in the images. Observers' ability to judge surface color was quantified by a standard color-constancy index. Deuteranomalous trichromats performed as well as normal trichromats, but protanomalous trichromats performed more poorly than both. The results are considered in relation to the spectral coverage of cones, rod intrusion, and the characterization of anomalous trichromacy by the Rayleigh match.

Dichromatic subjects can name colors accurately, even though they cannot discriminate among red-green hues (Jameson & Hurvich, 1978). This result is attributed to a normative language system that dichromatic observers developed by learning subtle visual cues to compensate for their impoverished color system. The present study used multidimensional scaling techniques to compare color categorization spaces of color-vision deficient (CVD) subjects to those of normal trichromat (NT) subjects, and consensus analysis estimated the normative effect of language on categorization. Subjects sorted 140 Munsell color samples in three different ways: a free sorting task (unlimited number of categories), a constrained sorting task (number of categories limited to eight), and a constrained naming task (limited to eight basic color terms). CVD color categories were comparable to those of NT subjects. For both CVD and NT subjects, a common color categorization space derived from the three tasks was well described by a three-dimensional model, with the first two dimensions corresponding to reddish-greenish and yellowish-bluish axes. However, the third axis, which was associated with an achromatic dimension in NTs, was not identified in the CVD model. Individual differences multidimensional scaling failed to reveal group differences in the sorting tasks. In contrast, the personal color naming spaces of CVD subjects exhibited a relative compression of the yellowish-bluish dimension that is inconsistent with the typical deutan-type color spaces derived from more direct measures of perceptual color judgments. As expected, the highest consensus among CVDs (77%) and NTs (82%) occurred in the naming task. The categorization behaviors studied in this experiment seemed to rely more on learning factors, and may reveal little about CVD perceptual representation of colors.

Recently developed psychophysical techniques permit the biasing of the processing of the stimulus by early visual channels so that responses reflect characteristics of either magno- or parvocellular pathways (Pokorny & Smith, 1997). We used such techniques to test psychophysically whether the global magnocellular dysfunction reported in schizophrenia also affects early processes. Seven schizophrenic patients and 19 normal controls participated. The task was a four-alternative forced-choice luminance discrimination, using a 2 × 2 configuration of four 1-deg squares. Target luminance threshold was determined in three conditions: the stimulus, including the target, was pulsed for 17 ms (pulse paradigm); the target was presented on a steady background of four squares (steady paradigm), or the target was presented alone (no background paradigm). We replicated previous results demonstrating magnocellular and parvocellular signatures in control participants. No evidence for an early magnocellular deficit could be detected as the thresholds of all schizophrenic observers were higher both in the steady paradigm (presumed magnocellular mediation) and in the pulse paradigm (presumed parvocellular mediation). Magnocellular dysfunction, if present in schizophrenia, must concern more integrated processes, possibly at levels at which parvocellular and magnocellular paths interact.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an increase in the saturation of blood oxygen (SaO2) and/or serum glucose on photoreceptor sensitivity in normal subjects and in patients with diabetes mellitus. We monitored cone and rod sensitivity by recording dark-adaptation curves to both green and red test stimuli while inhaling either air (20% O2 + 80% N2) or 100% oxygen in 12 normal subjects and 12 diabetic patients with no (10) or mild (2) retinopathy. We also repeated the experiment in 10 of the normal subjects under hyperglycemia (mean serum glucose: 161 mg/dl). Results show that in normal subjects the dark-adapted cone sensitivity is improved by an increase in SaO2 or by hyperglycemia. Final rod sensitivity is unchanged during hyperoxia and during hyperglycemia when measured with a green test spot. However the kinetics of dark adaptation are altered during hyperglycemia, and an increase in final sensitivity is observed when measured with the red test spot. Inhalation of oxygen during hyperglycemia in normal subjects reduces cone sensitivity compared to that found during hyperglycemia alone (Pasteur effect). In diabetic subjects the dark-adapted cone threshold is comparable to that found in normal subjects, and sensitivity also increases with an increase in SaO2. The final rod threshold, however, is impaired compared to that of the control group, and rod sensitivity is improved by increasing the SaO2. The results suggest that the metabolism of rods and cones may differ in normal subjects: in cones, the rate of metabolism can be augmented by increasing the available oxygen or glucose, whereas rods appear more insensitive to increased blood oxygen saturation and hyperglycemia. In diabetic subjects, both cone and rod metabolism can be increased by supplemental oxygen, indicative of an early rod deficit. The study lends weight to the hypothesis that dark-adapted rods in diabetics are hypoxic before the onset of retinopathy.
