This paper presents a multidimensional indicator of institutional quality in Argentina for the period 1862-2008. Initially, it describes a set of variables that aim to measure issues related to the legal framework prevailing in Argentina and its implementation, such as changes in the Constitution and the provincial Constitutions, declarations of state of siege and federal interventions, freedom of press, central bank independence. The indicator is then constructed through the principal component analysis.

The results suggest that periods of high institutional quality in Argentina coincided with the most expansion and relative progress. In other words, poor institutional quality would not only be reflected in lower growth rates but also compromises the ability to follow those countries with the best performace.

We analyse the possible optimality of the path followed by the current account of the Spanish economy over a very long period of almost 170 years (1850-2016), according to the intertemporal approach to the current account and using a present-value model. In particular, from the estimation of a bivariate vector autoregression model for the current account, we attempt to assess the extent to which the latter has been used to smooth private consumption over time in the presence of temporary shocks that the economy might suffer. In general, evidence does not seem to be particularly favourable to the validity of the model over the period of analysis.

In May 1940, among panic-stricken ministers and politicians, General de Gaulle was virtually alone to reflect and proclaim that France was not vanquished as long as it retained its colonial empire, which would serve as the springboard for France's future liberation and status as a world power. Not many of his contemporaries shared his conviction, and his loneliness testifies to the detachment of public opinion and politicians vis-a-vis an empire which in extent ranked second only to the British. In spite of the headlines, newsreels, slogans, colonial exhibitions and propaganda, most Frenchmen would have probably agreed that, over the years, the mother country had spent more on its colonies than it had received.

La gran ola de migraciones europeas y asiáticas que siguió a la abolición de la esclavitud en 1888 llevó hasta Brasil a unos cinco millones de inmigrantes nacidos en el extranjero. En este masivo movimiento migratorio, los inmigrantes españoles tuvieron un papel decisivo. Los tres cuartos de millón de españoles que fueron a Brasil en los setenta años comprendidos entre 1880 a 1950, participaron de forma notable en la expansión de la economía cafetera brasileña y, posteriormente, en la construcción de una gran economía urbana y agrícola en el Estado de São Paulo. Los españoles eran los terceros en importancia, tras italianos y portugueses, en toda la nación, pero debido a su concentración en São Paulo ocupaban el segundo lugar en este fundamental Estado. El ritmo de esta inmigración, como el de la italiana, estuvo del todo ligado a la demanda de mano de obra agrícola no especializada para los campos de café en expansión del planalto occidental, en el hinterland de la ciudad de Sao Paulo. Con la deserción en masa de los 150.000 esclavos de las fazendas cafeteras paulistas, en proceso de ampliación, los fazenderos forzaron al Estado a iniciar la subvención de inmigrantes foráneos, una labor que el gobierno federal acometió en los años siguientes, y que no se interrumpió hasta 1926.

Hace tiempo que los historiadores llamaron la atención acerca de la «decadencia española» y del trasfondo económico de dicho proceso. Sin embargo, y pese a que todos se remiten a parecidas explicaciones, no hay total acuerdo en lo que se refiere a la importancia de cada una de ellas.

En un trabajo importante y claramente revisionista sobre el conjunto del reino de Castilla, G. Anes expuso que difícilmente se puede hablar de un auténtico proceso de depresión económica, sino más bien de un período de reajustes productivos y demográficos inducidos por la contradicción entre recursos y población a fines del XVI, así como por la reducción de la productividad marginal del trabajo agrario y por las dificultades que esto, y el alza de la renta de la tierra, planteaban a las economías campesinas.

Social, and more importantly, cultural conditions are die causal factors that allow us to analyse the interpretation and the traits of the translation of David Ricardo's Principles of political economy and taxation, published in Madrid during the years 1848, 1849 and 1850. These social and cultural factors were economic backwardness, the economics training of the translator, the intellectual environment of Madrid, and the concern about social and political unrest. The result was an interpretation of Ricardo's thought quite different from mat usual in Great Britain, and where the meaning of Ricardian economics was lost.

El propósito de estas notas es ofrecer una descripción escueta de la literatura dedicada al pensamiento económico en España, publicada desde las I Jornadas (Madrid, febrero 1974), para que —siguiendo las indicaciones de los organizadores de estas III Jornadas— pueda servir de marco, referencia o acicate en el debate subsiguiente a las comunicaciones. Es una descripción improvisada e incompleta, que espero mejorar con la ayuda de los asistentes. Concluiré la relación con unas reflexiones generales que me ha sugerido el análisis de dicha literatura.

El libro de ensayos de Vicente Alcalá Galiano Sobre la Economía Política y los Impuestos, recientemente editado con un estudio preliminar de José Manuel Valles Garrido, me da pie a escribir esta nota por las razones que expondré seguidamente. La influencia smithiana en Vicente Alcalá Galiano era ya bien conocida antes de que se publicara este libro. Por otro lado, opino que la genuina reforma tributaria ilustrada radicó en el establecimiento de los frutos civiles por Floridablanca.

Veamos este último punto. La historiografía hacendística sobre los tributos españoles de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX ha considerado que la «Contribución Unica» del marqués de la Ensenada y los sucesivos intentos de establecer la Única Contribución hasta las reformas tributarias de las Cortes de Cádiz y de Martín de Garay marcaron la línea reformista y modernizadora del llamado sistema tributario tradicional castellano, basado en la alcabala y otras rentas provinciales, y que con el establecimiento de aquella figura tributaria, semejante al catastro y otros impuestos directos vigentes en la Corona de Aragón, iba a instaurarse un sistema uniforme para toda España, así como la unidad de Caja.

Cualquier referencia al comportamiento de los precios en la economía española, anterior a la Primera Guerra Mundial, pasa ineludiblemente por el índice de Sardà (1948) para 1812–1890, y desde entonces el que se recoge en el Dictamen de la Comisión del patrón oro. El índice de precios al por mayor de Bustelo y Tortella (1976) para este período es el resultado del enlace entre los dos anteriores. Por otra parte, algunos investigadores han preparado índices de precios basados en estadísticas oficiales de comercio. Así, por ejemplo, Leandro Prados elaboró un índice de precios para las exportaciones y otro para las importaciones a partir de las estadísticas del comercio exterior español y británico. Las estadísticas del comercio de cabotaje también han sido utilizadas para obtener información sobre la evolución de los precios correspondientes. Ninguno de ellos, sin embargo, informa satisfactoriamente sobre el comportamiento de los precios en el sector industrial de la economía española.

During Miguel de Cervantes' lifetime, the Mediterranean World was suffering a transformation in the internal distribution of power, both political and economic. Although the Ottoman fleet was defeated, which established the limits of dominance between the two empires, this did not prevent the entry in this space of the new commercial powers from northern Europe, which changed the trade in the Mediterranean. This article tries to provide a synthesis of this process, of which Cervantes was a direct witness both in his personal life and through the works which have survived to our time.

In spite of the limitations of the data, the estimation of a Cuban price index for 1872–1897 offers an acceptable result, is an important contribution to its economic history and offers some replies for the controversial issue of its independence. These prices suffered a deflation process similar to the other countries and which took place much at the same time as in the US (economy to which the island was already very linked to). However, after the 1883 crisis, prices started to decrease at a much lower rate than those of sugar, causing economic losses that, given the importante of this product, can be a good approach to what indicators such as the income rate —there are not income estimations— could show. Opposite to other studies, our research has got a complementary character. It points out die necessity of enlarging the spectre of analysis of issues such as the tariff policy or the protection of Cuban market for Spanish goods, since evidence proves that the international economic system development in the 1880's and 1890's was the main economic reason for die Island's independence.

Campomanes' economic ideas can not be adequately understood only in terms of the economic thought prevailing in 18th century Europe; it is also necessary to consider his origins, life and professional progress. As a general attorney —and, later, as governor— of the Council of Castile, the Asturian gentleman was perfectly fitted in the social and political system of the Old Regime. He attempted to introduce in the Spanish economy the elements of market rationality that the system could accept, but he did not go beyond.

Campomanes was neither a mercantilist nor a physiocratic economist. He thought necessary to promote both agriculture and manufacture and he was always worried with social problems. Campomanes fought to stabilize tenant-farmers on the land and to extend technical education among people; he tried to promote free markets against official prices, controls, privileges and monopolies; and he supported the creation of a public bank in the hope that it would help to movilise savings and to foster production.
