El futuro es, por definición, perfectamente incierto. En este final del siglo XX no podemos asegurar cuál va a ser la trayectoria de la economía española y de la economía catalana en los próximos años y menos aún en un período de tiempo más largo. Pero sí podemos entrever algunas oportunidades y algunos riesgos. Dependerá, en gran parte, de la capacidad de entender los problemas que dificultan el crecimiento potencial de la economía y los cambios de nuestro entorno, y de la forma en que se afronten esos problemas y esos cambios.

La historia económica se dedica justamente a acumular y a analizar la evidencia disponible sobre la realidad económica del pasado —que alcanza hasta ahora mismo—, en la convicción de que su conocimiento ha de ayudar a la toma de decisiones en cada momento y a construir un futuro colectivo mejor. Se entiende que lo que viene sucediendo siempre, es muy probable que siga ocurriendo.

En la mayoría de los estudios sobre la emigración española aparece implícita o explícitamente mencionado el hecho de la deficiente calidad de las estadísticas de la emigración española. Ello ha supuesto en muchos casos un freno a la investigación. En palabras de Sánchez-Albornoz,

al consultar los documentos, los historiadores han solido tropezar con grandes discrepancias y defectos en los números disponibles. Ha cundido, en consecuencia, una desconfianza a priori sobre los datos. Dúdase de poder alcanzar una base cuantitativa firme sobre la cual la explicación histórica necesita asentarse.

This paper studies the spatial deployment of temporary settlements in Extremadura in 1932-1933 and 1936. The literature has stressed the role of bottom-up forces driving settlements in 1933 and 1936, perhaps making land reform in Extremadura an interesting case study of local collective action-driving policy implementation in a developing economy. Contrary to this view, we argue that there was an equal or more important role of the top-down, programmatic design of land occupations, which explains a large share of the spatial and temporal variation of expropriations and settlements.

New Institutional Economics treats early modern Spain as an example of a state whose political and contracting institutions hindered economic growth. However, the assumption that Spanish political institutions were predatory in this respect has been called into question. This paper challenges the idea that Spain was unable to develop sufficiently good contracting institutions, of which we know relatively little. Using data from Malaga's notarial credit market, I show that legal institutions facilitated contractual compliance in private financial transactions. Specifically, public mortgage registries, which had improved the registration of properties used as collateral since their creation in 1768, favoured the subscription of larger contracts. Furthermore, results suggest that registries could have contributed to the development of a more impersonal credit market.

In 1833-1874, Spain suffered 0.7 coups per year. By contrast, the Restoration (1874-1923) saw the eradication of successful coups. This can be partially attributed to the turno pacífico, which allowed the main political parties to alternate in office without dragging the military into politics. We suggest, however, that the reduction in coup risk was also associated with a conscious budget policy. This, though, did not rely on increases in total military expenditure (which actually stagnated during most of the Restoration), but on the steady improvement of officers' remunerations and promotions. This strategy was probably detrimental to Spanish military capacity abroad, but was consistent with the objective of keeping the military out of politics.

This article analyses the biological welfare and inequality of the male population of the irrigated area of Valencia between 1859 and 1939. It studies the effects that the agrarian development process had on physical welfare and the relationship between height and access to land ownership. Height data for conscripts in five municipalities constitute the source for the study. The results reveal that there was a growing trend in the evolution of heights in the irrigated area of Valencia at the beginning of agrarian capitalism. Nutritional inequalities can be observed between farmers and farm workers: land owners were taller than landless labourers. However, this biological inequality diminished over the period under study.

Can low emigration rates from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic economy partly explain its relative economic decline over the 19th century? Time series tests of real wage integration show that the Maghreb and Eastern Mediterranean exported enough labourers to experience labour market integration, while the emigration rates of the northern Mediterranean, were not high enough. As the latter group comprised most of the region’s economic weight, the Mediterranean as a whole was held back. The wage gap between the first two groups and the Atlantic economy was the highest, but journey costs relative to wage levels were roughly similar across the Mediterranean. The incentive-vs.-cost arithmetic favoured emigration from the Maghreb and Eastern Mediterranean.

The aim of this article is to measure the advance of agricultural productivity in South Navarra between 1780 and 1900. The construction of several indices of agricultural commodities and factor prices allows us to apply the methodology of Total Factor Productivity (TFP). As distinguished from the thesis of stagnation, our estimate of the annual rate of TFP growth in the long run is close to 0.42 %. This rate was particularly high between 1817 and 1850, in a context of deflation and institutional change. During the second half of the century the cyclical evolution of the curve reveals the obstacles derived from the capital resources supply, especially fertilizers and animal traction.

This paper gathers information on the diet of the people of Montevideo. It puts forward some hypotheses regarding the caloric intake of the plebeian and non-elite social groups, introduces two Laspeyres indexes of food prices for Montevideo in 1760-1810, analyses the movements of food prices in Montevideo in this period and compares the case of Montevideo with neighbouring cities.

This work explores the management of public forests in Spain at the beginning of the twentieth century, in an effort to evaluate its effectiveness. For this purpose the article examine why and how the State made public forest management concessions to private enterprise, and analyzes the specific clauses of the contracts. The main conclusion is that those clauses were inefficient and although they accelerated forest product extractions, they did not achieve a constant growth of forest productivity. This could have had a negative effect on the sustainability of the forests being managed.

The life and work of Miguel de Cervantes coincide with the first cycle of globalization. One of the main engines of the world economy was the silver trade between the Americas and the Asian markets. The new world economy was developing at the same time as the «military revolution» in Eurasia. The Spanish, Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal and Russian empires and other political entities used the new military «hardware» and «software» to expand their borders and to maintain their position employing the larger part of their financial resources. These new economic and political realities propelled ecological exchanges that would irrevocably change the history of the world. That was the time of Don Quixote.

El viñedo es uno de los cultivos más tradicionalmente importantes de la agricultura malagueña. Las cepas han formado parte del paisaje agrario de la provincia de Málaga desde tiempo inmemorial, quedándonos constancia de que ya en la época romana y, sobre todo, durante la floreciente dominatión musulmana, las pasas y los vinos malagueños eran productos muy apreciados y gozaban de gran renombre a nivel mundial.

En la historiografía catalana el comercio con Oriente es un tema tan clásico como dado por sabido sin sentir la necesidad de profundizar en la investigatión ni de revisar los tópicos acumulados. Mientras la mayor parte de los mitos políticos nacionalistas han sido objeto de profundas revisiones, los mitos económicos, menos incómodos, han quedado intactos. Tan intactos en el caso del comercio con Oriente, que no existe ninguna obra dedicada específicamente al tema y que el estudio básico, la obra de Antonio de Campmany, fue publicada el año 1779; posteriormente han aparecido otras investigaciones, pero el comercio con Oriente no es su tema central (como tampoco lo era en Campmany), sino que es tratado con referencia a otras cuestiones.

El problema de la relación entre educación y crecimiento económico es muy pertinente a la situación socioeconómica actual de la URSS. El pais con el nivel más alto, o al menos uno de los más altos, de educación entre las naciones desarrolladas tiene uno de los más bajos en términos de renta national per capita. ¿Es ello paradójico? Sí, si somos de la opinión de que la renta nacional responde de modo inmediato y directo a la educación profesional de la población activa de un país. No es paradójico, no obstante, si se acepta la hipótesis de que hay que dejar pasar un cierto período de tiempo para que la educación dé fruto. En este sentido se nos plantea la siguiente cuestión: ¿con qué desfase han tenido los cambios en el nivel educativo un efecto apreciable sobre la renta nacional en Rusia/URSS?

En las Consecuencias económicas de la paz (1919), John M. Keynes alertaba a Europa que, aunque la victoria aliada en la Primera Guerra Mundial podía fortalecer la situación política y militar de los países vencedores, también podía tener repercusioncs económicas y financieras desastrosas. Se refería, por supuesto, a Francia y a las exigencias de compensación económica que impuso a Alemania. Keynes aconsejaba que antes de toma acciones de este tipo se estudiaran todos los efectos de una medida dada. Similar preocupación ocupó a historiadores y economistas de América Latina, España, Portugal y Estados Unidos, quienes durante tres días de julio se reunieron en la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid para discutir las consecuencias económicas del proceso independentista iberoamericano.

En los años de vigenda del régimen franquista, la política económica del país estuvo prcsidida por una obsesión: la industrialización. Al finalizar la guerra civil, la economía española estaba gravada por un capital humano mermado y un capital materiál de difícil recuperación. La escasez y pobreza generalizadas sirvieron de argumento para concebir y Uevar a cabo una política económica fundada en la idea de que la renta por habitante y la productividad eran más altas en la industria que en cualquier otro sector de la producción. En consecuencia, se impuso la tendencia a potenciar las actividades industriales, dejando en segundo piano a las de tipo agrario, hasta entonces definitorias de nuestra economía.
