Stanley A. Kochanek, professor emeritus of political science at the Pennsylvania State University (University Park), died May 2 of complications following heart surgery.

Judith Merkle Riley, longtime professor of government at Claremont McKenna College and bestselling novelist under her married name, Judith Merkle Riley, died at her home in Claremont, California, on September 12, 2010, of cancer. She was 68.

The passing of John Kie-chang Oh is a vivid reminder of how much political science is driven by political responsibility. As a young man in Seoul, John Oh found himself at the center of the great upheaval that was the Korean War. His enrollment in law at the prestigious Seoul National University was cut short, and the prospect of a career in law and politics was put permanently on hold. Even worse, as he recalled, he could not depart from the city, as he was recovering from an appendectomy. The bright optimism of a 20-year-old had been shattered on that September morning in 1950, as he suddenly found himself on the run in his own native land.

Carl F. Stover, 79, was a public affairs executive with a long career of managing and leading many nonprofit organizations. He was an admirable example of someone who bridged connections between civic education and civil society.

C. Neal Tate, born October 17, 1943, passed away September 13, 2009, in Nashville, Tennessee. At the time of his death, Neal was the Alexander Heard Distinguished Service Professor, professor of political science, and professor of law at Vanderbilt University, where he had also served as chair of the political science department since 2003. He had previously served on the faculty of the University of North Texas from 1970 through 2003. With a deep sense of sadness, his colleagues and friends at both institutions say goodbye to a beloved friend, teacher, and colleague. Neal's passing has been a great loss for many people around the country and around the world. His contributions were many, and while we will no longer have the benefit of his kindness, keen intellect, and fine sense of humor, we will continue to benefit from his many legacies.

I cannot be entirely objective about the life and death of Robert Charles Tucker, who died, at age 92, at his home in Princeton on July 29. During the course of 50 years, Bob Tucker was my mentor, colleague, and very dear friend. He was the best man at my wedding to Katrina (Katia) vanden Heuvel, and I gave my oldest daughter, from a previous marriage, his family name as her middle name: Alexandra Tucker Cohen.

For the first time in its history, the Annual Meeting of the American Political Science Association will take place in Seattle, Washington. Set in a contemporary urban environment surrounded by the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, the 2011 Annual Meeting and Exhibition will offer something for everyone.

The Executive Director's Report is an annual report on the state and activities of the association, and for 2010, the APSA remains vigorous and in good health. Programs across a very broad range of activities are going forward well, including the Africa Workshops, the Congressional Fellowship Program, the Centennial Center, ongoing task forces, new social networking capabilities, committee initiatives, the Teaching and Learning Conference, Annual Meeting siting and planning, coordinated work of 39 organized sections, departmental surveys and programming, and member services. This report is intended to provide an overview of the association's activities as they relate to promoting scholarship and teaching, connecting political science with the world, and supporting professional careers.

The purpose of this report is to inform APSA membership about the association's financial health activities. This report provides a summary of APSA's assets, liabilities, and the financial impact of the association's current operations.

The process by which panels are allocated among program committee divisions and related groups may appear to be arcane. It needn't be. In the late fall of the year preceding the next Annual Meeting, each division or group organizer receives a panel allocation and a detailed explanation of how the size of the allocation was determined. The following paragraphs detail the process by which the 2011 panel allocations were determined.

In June 2012, the UCLA editorial team at the American Political Science Review will complete its current term. President Carole Pateman has named an APSR search committee to help identify a successor or successors to be presented for Council approval in August 2011.

Jennifer Segal Diascro has joined the APSA as director of institutional programs. Jennifer brings nearly 20 years of experience in political science to the APSA. Most recently, she served on the faculty of the department of government at American University (2002–10). She was previously an associate professor at the University of Kentucky, where she was on the faculty of the department of political science from 1995 to 2002. During that time, she was also a Supreme Court Fellow at the United States Sentencing Commission (2000–01). She earned her Ph.D. in judicial politics from the Ohio State University in 1995.

The Centennial Center for Political Science and Public Affairs is an invaluable resource to political and social scientists. Since its opening in September 2003, the Center has housed more than 100 scholars. The center, located in the APSA headquarters near Dupont Circle, provides a great base of operations for scholars researching in the DC metro area. The Center offers visiting scholars furnished work space, telephone, fax, computers, Internet access, conference space, a reference library, and access to George Washington University's Gelman Library. Visiting scholar stays range from a few days to 12 months. Space is limited to APSA members and is available for faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and advanced graduate students from the United States and abroad. Scholars are expected to cover their own expenses and a modest facilities fee for the use of the center. Prospective visiting scholars may apply at any time. For a decade, dozens of political scientists who study gender and politics in Japan and the United States have been sharing their research on women in politics. With support from the Japan–U.S. Friendship Commission and Washington College, APSA's Japan–America Women Political Scientists Symposium (JAWS) held its sixth symposium in Washington, DC, and Chestertown, Maryland, from August 28 to September 4, 2010. The program was organized by Melissa Deckman of Washington College. Ten Japanese scholars and nine U.S. scholars participated in the workshop, which was the largest gathering of JAWS to date.
